launch of another remarkable Students Club season! The Maclab Enterprises Students Club is a Citadel Theatre program that offers a unique glimpse into the world of professional theatre to a wide range of junior and senior high school students from Edmonton and surrounding areas. On the first three Tuesdays and Wednesdays of our mainstage productions, Students Club members gather to enjoy a small reception before the show and then participate in a highly engaging, interactive presentation/ demonstration involving one of the Citadel’s talented theatre artists. Following the performance students are then invited to stay for a lively talkback session with members of the production’s cast and crew.

Prior to seeing Next to Normal Students Club members will be treated to an active and compelling exploration of the process of theatre from the perspective of the actor. This pre-show presentation provides a unique glimpse into the different levels of discipline, skill and imagination that are part of bringing a performance to the stage. t may be a bit early to deck the halls but not too early to consider your yearly visit to the Citadel’s annual reclamation-of-a-lost-soul project, A Christmas Carol. Once again, the Citadel is inviting you to experience what has become an Edmonton tradition and those two polar opposites – the flickering-fire-in-the-grate warmth of Bob Crachit (and family) and the cold-hearted, tight fisted, selfish old misanthrope, Ebenezer Scrooge. As Dickens himself described him, “The cold within him froze his old features, nipped his pointed nose, made his eyes red, his thin lips blue and he spoke out shrewdly in the grating voice.”

In 2007, Colin was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award for Outstanding Contribution to Theatre in Edmonton at the Sterling Awards.

That rasping voice spoke out for the first time at the Citadel thirteen years ago in Bob Baker’s inestimable production of the Dickens’ classic. The voice belonged to actor/adaptor Tom Wood and the performer put an enduring stamp on the role. Then a couple of years back, national treasure Richard McMillan took over the role and, darned if his performance wasn’t a demonstration of how a master actor can find something new in familiar territory. If Wood was Scrooge right down to his DNA, McMillan was a charismatic performer having a wonderful time impersonating one of Dickens’ most iconic characters. This year we stick our thumbs into the great Dickens’ Christmas pudding and pull out a plum – a new Scrooge in the person of the Citadel’s go-to man for all things theatrical – James MacDonald. MacDonald is the Citadel’s Super Mario – put him down in any situation and he scurries about getting things done. As an actor he has won Sterling Awards for his performances in the Citadel’s production of Vern Thiessen’s Einstein’s Gift and for Of Mice and Men. He was the founding Artistic Director of the River City Shakespeare Festival and has directed and/or was a featured actor in many of their productions. He started off in the first Citadel drama classes for kids (at the age of 10) in 1978 (along with fellow classmates Larry Yachimec and Ted Dykstra) and appeared as an actor in his first Citadel production in

Citadel Artistic Director Bob Baker calls him

“versatile, fiercely intelligent, passionate and extremely dedicated to his art and community.” 1997. Since then he’s directed 17 shows (Billy Bishop Goes to War/Equus/God of Carnage/ Julius Caesar/A Few Good Men) and appeared in over 15 more. In 2006, Citadel Artistic Director Bob Baker offered him the post of Associate Artistic Director. MacDonald is currently the program director of the Citadel/Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program. MacDonald is a well known figure around the community – occasionally in his MacDonald clan kilt. He’s friendly, accessible and still exhibits some of the shyness that drew him to acting in the first place. Citadel Artistic Director Bob Baker calls him “versatile, fiercely intelligent, passionate and extremely dedicated to his art and community.” James MacDonald was going to be a history teacher. He loved the sweep and drama of history and wanted to pass that passion on to other inquiring minds. But theatre got in the way. “I found I could still tell great stories but in a way that was much more interesting to me. In theatre, I found I liked the people, the interaction with a company of artists and with audiences. When I was younger, I felt I wasn’t a great actor but my teachers, especially at the U of A, teachers like Tom Peacock and Jim DeFelice, were very patient. They had the ability to see what a young actor could bring to the table as opposed to looking for what they lacked. They could look into the future and say, ‘Someday this guy could be a very good actor.’”

“We owe so much to those people in the ‘70’s who founded all these companies – and said we are going to do our own theatre.” Shortly after World War II in Canada, theatre was firmly controlled by British expatriates, and, bless their hearts, they brought the flame to Canada and kept it alive. They taught us Oscar Wilde in our schools and declaimed Shakespeare on our stages. But slowly a Canadian voice began to be heard in the middle of all those plummy accents. “My generation was the first generation of a real Canadian theatre,” says MacDonald. In a bow to Citadel founder Joe Shoctor (and others across the country like him) he goes on, “We owe so much to those people in the ‘70’s who founded all these companies – and said we are going to do our own theatre.” As both director and actor, MacDonald brings an attitude to the material that works for him in both capacities. “When we did first table-read for A Few Good Men I told the actors, ‘This is a new play. It has never been done before and so we can stage it any way we want to. That way we are all on the same page when it comes to the circumstances of the play. We’re not playing characters based on someone else’s idea (Jack Nicholson? Tom Cruise?). We will use only our own ideas while staying true to the spirit of the script.’” So that is possibly why the actor is not inhibited by the remarkable performances that preceded his as Scrooge. “Sure, it’s an iconic role, in the same way that Macbeth and Hamlet are iconic roles. But they can be interpreted in many ways. The wonderful thing about Tom’s adaptation is that so much of the work is done for

you. It’s all there in the lines and all you have to do is connect to them. The journey the character goes through is very understandable – so you don’t find yourself play-acting or pretending. You just speak what you feel. We can all understand his (Scrooge’s) regret. We understand his guilt. We understand his youthful joy. He’s very vindictive at the beginning but in the flashbacks we see a very different person. He’s seen as a lonely boy in school. A young man very much in love. I think the key to playing in A Christmas Carol is that, if the audience is going to be emotionally involved, you have to share the process with them.” Back in in 1843, Dickens’ A Christmas Carol was one of the greatest elements in rejuvenating the old English Christmas traditions that had fallen on bad times extending back as far as that fusty old curmudgeon, Oliver Cromwell. In a canny display of storytelling, Dickens wove images of light, joy, warmth and life into unforgettable reflections of darkness, despair, coldness, sadness and death. As dark and ugly as Scrooge’s shrivelled soul “...I think the key to playing in is, the story is one of redemption. “I played A Christmas Carol is that, if Macbeth in the park a few years back and, as an actor it was hard. It was very hard because the audience is going to be emotionally involved, you have to there is no redemption in that play and you walk away feeling empty. But with Scrooge, share the process with them.” every time I did it last year (MacDonald played the role at matinee performances, and for the last week of the run), I would finish exhausted but with an exuberance because of the audience’s reaction. Because of the journey we went through together and the redemption he, and by extension all of us, received.”

“...We try to never lose sight of the story as it is ultimately told through writing and acting. I think we do it exceptionally and as well as anyone in the country.” Each year as the production begins, the cast is shown a slide presentation put together by co-director Geoffrey Brumlik. Brumlik went back to the original John Leech wood engravings for the first publication of A Christmas Carol in 1843. “That’s where we start,” says MacDonald. “This is the story we are telling. It’s a real grounding in the truth of those times.” If you take an overview of the show with its large cast, revolving music box sets and recreation of London 1843 and compelling magic elements it comes off as a spectacle, the kind of thing that only the Citadel can produce in Edmonton. But at its heart, the people on that stage are not playing a spectacle. “We play a very intimate story. I don’t want to sound immodest, but it’s the kind of thing we do best at the Citadel. We try to never lose sight of the story as it is ultimately told through writing and acting. I think we do it exceptionally and as well as anyone in the country.” The Citadel’s magical production of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol opens in the Maclab Theatre on November 30 and runs through December 23.

“Nobody realizes that some people expend tremendous energy merely to be normal.” - Albert Camus

Next to Normal first began in 1998 at the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop (for composers and librettists), where Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey were tasked with writing a 10-minute musical as their firstyear final project. Yorkey had recently seen a television documentary on the subject of electroconvulsive therapy, and the two settled on the idea of a brief sketch about a woman undergoing this treatment—the result was the short musical Feeling Electric. Over the next decade, the play continued to develop — eventually shifting focus from a satirical and ironic look at the medical/psychological establishment to a human drama about the effects of mental illness on a family. By 2008, the show received its first large-scale professional production at the Second Stage Theatre (Off-Broadway, New York) under the new title Next to Normal. Later that year, the show was developed further to enhance the dramatic elements of the story. The re-tooled production opened at Arena Stage to praising critical and audience reviews. Next to Normal opened on Broadway in April, 2009, receiving rave reviews from New York critics and setting box office records for its venue, the Booth Theatre. It was nominated for eleven Tony Awards and received four – including Best Original Score. Next to Normal also received the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama (the previous musical to receive this award was Rent in 1996). The award was presented amid some controversy as the Pulitzer Board ignored the recommendations of the selection jury that did not include the play amongst the submitted finalists. Director’s

NOTES

When Next to Normal opened on Broadway in 2009 it was hailed by The New York Times as “a brave, breathtaking musical which asks you, with operatic force, to discover the liberation in knowing where it hurts.” I believe those words to be very true. After putting this musical together for four weeks in rehearsal with this incredibly talented cast and crew, we have discovered the liberation and the incredible power of this musical. In 2009/2010 I was fortunate enough to be directing a show called Bash’d in New York at an Off-Broadway Theatre, The Zipper Factory, while Next to Normal was playing at the Booth Theatre just off of Times Square. I went. This little musical was a revelation. Here, on Broadway, playing next to these multimillion dollar mega-musicals like Spiderman, The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, Mamma Mia, Legally Blonde, Billy Elliot, Young Frankenstein… was this “little” musical that could — about this woman who has bi-polar disorder and how she and her family come to grips with her and her disease. Next to Normal is about courage. About the courage to face life on life’s terms. About stepping off into the abyss. About facing the unknown and fighting for your life in the midst of incredible odds. About family and about healing. About the price we pay to feel. And it is with this in mind that we present to you Next to Normal: the feel everything musical. It has been a privilege working on this project. sincerely, Ron Jenkins

BIPOLAR DISORDER

Also known as manic depression, bipolar disorder is a mood disorder that results in serious, even drastic changes in mood alternating between highs (mania) and lows (depression). These swings can last hours, days, weeks and even months and are different than the normal “ups and downs that are experienced by everyone. During a period of mania, symptoms may include feelings of euphoria, rapid speech, racing thoughts, inability to concentrate, decreased need for sleep, extreme agitation and/or impulsive and sometimes reckless behavior. Symptoms of depression may include intense feelings of sadness or hopelessness, insomnia, a decreased ability to think clearly, fatigue, lack of motivation or decreased interest in usually enjoyed activities, withdrawal from friends and family and/or recurring thoughts of suicide or self-harm. During severe episodes of mania or depression, some people may experience psychosis, or a detachment from reality. Symptoms of psychosis include hallucinations and delusional thinking. Bipolar disorder affects approximately 1% of the population, or about 350,000 people in Canada. It affects men and women equally regardless of race, ethnicity or socio-economic background. While there is no permanent cure, symptoms of bipolar disorder can be treated through a combination of medication and psychotherapy, allowing for greater control over mood swings and related symptoms. Medications can include mood stabilizers (lithium, Depakote), antipsychotics (Zyprexa, Risperdal) and antidepressants (Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft). For severe cases in which medication and psychotherapy is not effective or advised, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) may be used to stabilize mood swings. Improvement usually occurs over a course of several treatments and in some cases a long-term course of ECT is prescribed. Short term sideeffects may include confusion and memory loss. For further information about mental illness, including bipolar disorder, contact the Canadian Mental Health Association, www.edmonton.cmha.ca.
