students club The Citadel Theatre believes that young people are integral to the artistic fabric of our community. As such, we are committed to programming and initiatives that develop their creative voices and encourage their participation. The Maclab Students Club is such a program – one that offers a unique glimpse into the world of professional theatre to a wide range of junior and senior high school students from Edmonton and surrounding areas. On the first three Tuesdays and Wednesdays of our season’s main stage productions, Students Club members gather to enjoy a small reception before the show and then participate in a highly engaging, interactive presentation from one of our region’s talented theatre artists. Following the performance, students are invited to stay for an informative talkback session with members of the production’s cast and crew. Prior to the performance, Samantha J. Rumball who has been a make-up and wig artist for film, television, and theatre for 30 years joined the students to introduce them to the important and unique role she plays in the creation of theatre and film. Samantha has been working at the Citadel for five years and she has enjoyed the diversity of her career and all the opportunities it has brought working across Canada and internationally. One of her favourite jobs was working as the make-up artist with Phantom of the Opera. The students were able to learn the basics of the industry by watching as Samantha transformed some volunteers before their eyes.

A Theatre forAll Seasons part 5
20052015
Said Citadel Artistic Director Bob Baker in 2005, repeating and reinforcing an
oft-quoted mantra, “I like to think that if you come to the Citadel, you never know what you’re going to get.” In his 17 years as Artistic Director, the Citadel has offered shows big (Disney’s Beauty written by and the Beast/A Christmas Carol) and Colin MacLean small (John Ullyatt, brilliant, in two one man shows, I Am My Own Wife and Billy Bishop Goes to War), serious (August: Osage County) or uproariously funny (One Man, Two Guvnors/Spamalot), family oriented (Mary Poppins) or peppery alternative (The Shape of Things). “Our audiences are very sophisticated and demand a wide variety of theatre,” says he cheerfully.
Disney’s Beau
ty and the Be
ast
In that year, Baker had every reason to feel optimistic about his theatre. His well-oiled production machine was the envy of every theatre in the country – just ask the many travelling shows that have played on any of the Citadel’s stages. Artistically, Bob’s unerring sense es to War Billy Bishop Go John Ullyatt in of returning to the author’s intent while locating the humanity of the characters guaranteed freshness to each of his productions. Actors who were cast in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast observed that Bob kept insisting they were “not playing Disney animated characters but real people with real emotions.” Cardboard characters that for years had peen pasted on a flat poster of Rydell High became flesh and blood in Bob’s 2003 production of Grease. The two ill-starred lovers Tony and Maria provided a beating heart at the centre of all that high-energy dancing and street level smarts of West Side Story. Audiences were increasing and by 2008 Bob could tell the board that subscriptions were up to 10,000. A Christmas Carol, which was originally expected to run a couple of years (if only to make back the original money invested) had become a beloved Edmonton tradition and a money machine for the theatre. Demonstrating that you don’t always have to look elsewhere, the Citadel developed a pool of local stars – this in an institution that used to import most of its casts. The group included John Ullyatt, Susan Gilmore, Réjean Cournoyer, Andrew MacDonald-Smith, Jan Alexandra Smith, Julien Arnold, Tom Wood, James MacDonald, Beth Graham, etc. Baker’s philosophy is, “I look first locally – and then I look beyond.” Observes Citadel Executive Director Penny Ritco, “I think that’s a

reason why so many of our brightest and best have not fled elsewhere. A lot of talented people have stayed – and grown here.” Ritco was an old friend of Baker’s from his Stratford acting days and for a number of years they had, individually, braved the chilly Toronto theatre scene. She was a seasoned producer of theatre and film and, one day, hearing of an opening at the Citadel, phoned Bob to say “Hello.” They discussed her applying for the Executive Director position and shortly thereafter, she was appointed. So began the onset of a smooth-running, long-time relationship born in theatrical heaven. Baker, like many of artistic temperament, has been known to be volatile and upon occasion when his vision was not happening on stage, to be, ah, loud. In 2008, he jokingly admitted to Liz Nichols, “I have been known to express my impatience forcefully, but not in the longest time. I’ve mellowed, I guess.” “He’s demanding but not unreasonable,” says Ritco. “He’s very much a team player.” In this decade, Baker’s Citadel moved beyond the image of the big, brooding brick playhouse on the hill. The Artistic Director has merged the Citadel’s various training offshoots into one entity – The Citadel Academy has become Canada’s most comprehensive program for creative development in professional theatre. It includes The Eldon and Anne Foote Theatre School that has been training young people for 50 years; the Young Companies program which offers advanced training for 16 to 21 year-olds and Play Development provides playwrights with the opportunity to collaborate with some of Canada’s most celebrated writers. Don’t forget the jewel in the crown: the Citadel/Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program, which trains emerging and established performers, is already spreading its influence across the country like waves in a pool. It has certainly elevated our theatre-going experience, as performers who have already spent five weeks honing their skills in Banff, have brought their cohesive company here for such memorable productions as Tom Wood’s adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, The Three Musketeers, The Penelopiad, etc. This year the company will be presenting West Side Story. But just outside the imposing brick and glass of the theatre, Edmonton was changing. A new downtown was beginning to form. There was a new life in the air. Baker knew if his theatre was going to continue he would have to reach out and plug into that new energy.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES All families have their secrets, often buried
beneath layers of denial, slowly festering and sometimes affecting the very foundations of the family itself. This is a common theme in literature and drama from Chekhov to Shakespeare. In Other Desert Cities, Jon Robin Baitz depicts one such family’s struggle to survive a dark and traumatic event in its past by refusing to ever speak of it, denying, in fact, its very existence. When the daughter, a writer, returns home to Palm Springs to visit her parents, conflict ensues after she announces the imminent publication of her memoir – a book that focuses on this tragic event. The play poses the question: Does the daughter have the right to share the family’s past with her readers, and in so doing, betray her parents and destroy their reputation? Or more simply put, does an artist have the right to choose art over life? The brilliance of Jon Robin Baitz’s writing is that there is no answer to this question. He offers no lectures and no solutions. He leaves it up to you, the audience, to decide for yourselves—if you can. Brenda Bazinet

“There was a feeling of excitement every night we went on stage and I think that transmitted to audiences.” By the end of the run, those audiences had grown to such an extent that Sold Out signs were posted. It was felt that the show could have run for some time after the announced closing date – but it was a co-production with Theatre Calgary and had to move on. On closing night, Ullyatt remembers thinking, “This is too good. It can’t be over.” Says Baker, “There was talk about remounting it but it’s a very expensive show to do and audiences don’t necessarily want to see the same show the next year so we had to let it go.” Earlier last year, when thinking about plans for the 50th season, Baker mused, “I thought it would be nice to pull out the scrapbook and recognize the past – giving people the opportunity to see what we had done.” He conducted a straw poll of Citadel employees as to what shows they thought might be brought back for the theatre’s fiftieth season. The result was almost unanimous – West Side Story. Just what is this remarkable icon of American musical theatre? For one thing, it was the coming together of four of the greatest talents to emerge from the creative soup that was the Broadway stage in the ‘50’s – Jerome Robbins, Leonard Bernstein, Arthur Laurents and Stephen Sondheim.

Robbins was a choreographer, director and producer who left his fingerprints all over On The Town, Peter Pan, Fiddler on the Roof and many other classic Broadway productions. Bernstein was a giant – one of the great composer/conductors of the last century. Laurents wrote the book for Broadway musicals (Gypsy) and Hollywood movies (Anastasia/The Way We Were). In 1947, Robbins approached Bernstein and Laurents with an idea for a show based on Romeo and Juliet to be re-told as the doomed relationship between a boy from a Catholic family and a Jewish girl who had survived the Holocaust. The three immediately took to the idea, and, being men of great talent and even greater egos, began a series of squabbles that threatened, time and time again, to sink the whole project. Bernstein wanted to write it as an opera. “Nope...” said the other two – it is to be a Broadway show. Laurents wrote a draft calling it East Side Story. It read as a musicalization of Broadway’s long-running hit Abbie’s Irish Rose and they decided to abandon the idea. In fact, it was shelved for five years. In 1952, Laurents was working on another project when producer Martin Gable asked him to bring Bernstein and Robbins into it. Instead, when the three got together they decided to relaunch East Side Story. They were looking for a lyricist – their first choices, Betty Comden and Adolph Green (On The Town) had fled to Hollywood. That year Sondheim, who was only 22 years old, was invited to a party. He arrived early and

didn’t know anyone. He fell to talking to Laurents who told him about their need for a wordsmith. Sondheim had just written his first show, an urban musical called Saturday Night, and leapt at the chance. The kid auditioned for Bernstein who wanted to write the lyrics himself (and never gave up on the idea). Later, Bernstein would demand the producer list him as co-lyricist in the program. However, reality and common sense prevailed and the credit was dropped before opening night. In the meantime the piece had switched geography – it was now West Side Story. The original area had been gentrified so much that delinquency and racial tension had all but disappeared. The show was now the tale of Tony, a Polish/Irish boy and Maria, a recent Puerto Rican immigrant. Language was a problem. Originally the F-bomb and some other choice street level words made their way into the script but had to be dropped when it was pointed out that the original cast record would never be able to pass inter-state language prohibitions. So Sondheim created a new invective that was supposed to sound like real street talk. Such phrases as, “Cut the frabba jabba” and “Gee Officer Krupke, Krupp you,” were created. Sondheim was never very happy with his lyrics, telling ABC News a few years back that his words were, “self-conscious. In ‘I Feel Pretty’ the street girl is singing ‘It’s alarming how

charming I feel.’ I just put my head under my wing and pretend I’m not there.” Laurents complained that some of Sondheim’s words (particularly in “America” and “I Feel Pretty”) were “too witty” for the characters singing them. Despite the lyricist’s misgivings the impact of that long-ago opening and the success of the years following have demonstrated the enduring quality of Sondheim’s words. By the fall of 1956 the money dried up. After a banker’s audition failed to raise any capital the original producer, Cheryl Crawford, decamped. Robbins announced he was pulling out of the show as choreographer. Well-known as a pain in the rump perfectionist, he returned only when the new producers came up with money for an eight-week rehearsal period. (Robbins was fired for holding up production of the Hollywood version for the same reason – he won an Oscar anyway.) He kept making changes and not telling the others. By opening night, none of them were speaking to him. Casting was a problem. In those years dancers danced, singers generally sang and actors acted. Finding performers who could do all three and still be taken for teen-agers was difficult. Bernstein had to continuously fight to keep his orchestral passages and some of his songs in the show – the others felt they were too operatic. Columbia records (at first) refused to record a cast album saying the score was too depressing and difficult.

“West Side Story touches something in the human heart. ...The lessons of West Side Story are very relevant to today.”
West Side Story opened on Broadway September 26, 1957. Some critics didn’t get it. Most did – and realized that the Great White Way would never quite be the same again. Said Walter Kerr in the New York Herald Tribune the next morning, “The radioactive fallout from West Side Story must still be descending on Broadway this morning. (Robbins...) has put together and then blasted apart, the most savage, restless, electrifying dance patterns we’ve ever been exposed to.” Baker’s upcoming Citadel production of West Side Story will indeed be “new” promises the director. “The production of 11 years ago was of its time. You can’t repeat something like that. There’ll be different people – different chemistries. This time we’ll be featuring the young people from the Citadel/Banff program. Robbins’ choreography was brilliant but I didn’t want to repeat a dance form of 1957. We have the brilliant local choreographer, Laura Krewski, who has her own dance vocabulary and brings a deep history as a performer. What’s exciting for me is producing it in the Maclab. It’s going to be a challenge to make a musical work on the theatre’s thrust stage. It’s not the way it’s usually done and it’s going to take a lot of creativity to make it work.” West Side Story has maintained its popularity ever since that magic night in 1957. Like all great works of art – it speaks to succeeding generations. At its heart, it’s a story that could be torn from today’s headlines. Says Baker, “West Side Story touches something in the human heart. With the disenfranchising of the youth community and refugees all over the globe trying to assimilate – it’s surprisingly contemporary. There are echoes here of Ferguson – the police of the show are certainly racist. Young people are still trying to find and carve out their own identity. The lessons of West Side Story are very relevant to today.” West Side Story, a production of the Citadel Theatre, begins on the Maclab stage on April 23.
