Message From The

Artistic Director Welcome to Once and the start of our 2018/19 Season!

This is my second season of programming as Artistic Director. Time flies! This season, we invite you to ReImagine what theatre can be. The productions are full of characters that ReImagine their lives: like young Matilda Wormwood who decides, “Nobody but me is going to change my story.” The productions are also opportunities for us to ReImagine familiar stories through a new lens: a WWI story told from the perspective of a Métis soldier (Redpatch), or a Jane Austen story told from the eyes of the forgotten middle sister (Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley). This season is also a chance to ReImagine how we experience theatre: two plays by the same playwright, happening in two different theatres at the same time, featuring the same cast running back and forth between the shows (The Candidate and The Party); or a magical re-envisioning of a Shakespearean classic performed by Deaf and hearing actors (The Tempest). Once is a fantastic way to start the season. The production ReImagines the Oscar-winning film in a truly theatrical manner – transporting us to different locations through imagination and simple magic, and leaving us awe-struck by the multi-talented ensemble of performers who act, sing, dance, and play all the musical instruments! Not only is this production packed full of fantastic music, it also has an incredibly touching story, and such a big heart. My thanks to our director Ann Hodges and her wildly talented cast for this incredible production, innovatively designed by Cory Sincennes, Louise Guinand, and Matthew Skopyk. Thanks also to Music Director Steven Greenfield and Choreographer Julie Tomaino for the foot-stomping music and dance throughout this show. And a big thanks to all of the incredible local musicians playing in our lobby before the performance each night! Most of all, thanks to you, our audience, for being here to kick off our 2018/19 Season, and celebrating the joy of live theatre with us. We hope you will join us throughout the season to ReImagine what theatre can be!

Daryl Cloran, Artistic Director

We wish to acknowledge that the land on which we gather is Treaty No. 6 territory and a traditional meeting ground and home of the First Nations, including both the treaty signatories – Cree, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Stony and Cree-Iroquois – as well as other Indigenous peoples, such as the Blackfoot and Métis, who occupied this land. We extend our appreciation for the opportunity to live, create and perform on this territory. Students Club The Citadel Theatre believes that young people are integral to the artistic fabric of our community and we are committed to programming and initiatives that develop their creative voices and encourage their participation. Students Club offers a unique glimpse into the world of professional theatre to a wide range of local junior and senior high school students. Prior to select performances of each of our Mainstage shows, members gather for a light supper and then participate in a highly engaging, interactive presentation with one of our region’s talented theatre artists, covering some aspect of theatre – from choreography to design, from stage combat to Shakespeare. Following the performance, students stay for an informative talkback with members of the production’s cast and crew. Prior to Students Club performances of Once, students enjoyed an interactive workshop with Darrin Hagen. Currently Edmonton Public Library’s writer-in-residence, Darrin Hagen is an award-winning playwright, composer, author, and drag artiste. For over three decades, he has been the Artistic Director of Guys In Disguise, Canada’s most notorious drag performance theatre company, which has been creating and touring cross-dressing comedies since Darrin Hagen 1987, with plays being produced across Canada, in the U.S. and in Europe. He has also spent 20 years compiling stories of Edmonton’s LGBTQ history, beginning with the release of his stories of the underground drag community, The Edmonton Queen. He has been inducted into the Q Hall of Fame Canada and the Edmonton Queer Hall of Fame. In 2005, he was named one of 100 Edmontonians of the Century, and in 2017, was named one of Alberta’s 25 Most Influential Artists in the last 25 years. To the best of his knowledge, he’s the only drag queen on that list. He was one of the official Cultural Ambassadors of Canada’s 150 Celebrations. Through the workshop, the students learned how actor-musicians artists can work navigate playing instruments to tell stories and the balance struck between truth and skill.

For more information on Students Club, or to become a part of the program, please contact Shirley Tran at 780.428.2127 or groupsales@citadeltheatre.com.

But why is music-making so transformative? I believe one reason is that making music, while lots of fun, is also rather risky. Play a wrong note and everyone hears it. Start a phrase early and you risk the withering glare of the conductor. Sing too high, your voice might crack. It takes courage to just jump in and commit, because everyone will hear if you make a mistake. Also, making music requires breath. However, the way we breathe can reveal feelings we’d rather keep hidden: fear, excitement, sadness. But musicians need to breathe with their music, and sometimes they need to look into each others’ eyes and breathe together. They also need to listen to each other, and themselves. There’s nowhere to hide, really, when making music with someone else. It’s risky. But we take these risks because music-making has such a transformative power. We are different at the end of a song, simply by singing it, playing it, or hearing it. That is why I think that music-making is also an act of great generosity — because by sharing music with others, we are offering them the possibility of transformation. Once is the gentle love story that took Broadway by storm in 2012. Based on the tender 2007 film, the musical explores the transformative power of music in a uniquely ‘nonBroadway’ fashion. Played by multi-talented actor-musician-storytellers, the songs take us deep into the heart of the characters, or explode past the footlights and seem to transcend reality. The story is a simple one, of Guy, an Irish busker, and Girl, a Czech immigrant, who, like all the characters in the play, are ‘stopped’ in life in some way. But through the act of making music with each other, each not only becomes ‘unstuck,’ but also helps those around them move forward in life. And, each learns that love, like music-making, requires risk, courage, breath, listening, and great, great generosity. – Ann Hodges

Or, if you are reading this after you’ve seen the show, and the Citadel’s sympathetic production, you will no doubt still carry warm memories of the experience. At any rate, this might be a good time to take a look at some of the productions that Artistic Director Daryl Cloran has put together for the season. After his successful first season Cloran, always an adventurous sort, decided to brand his list of plays as the “REImagine Season.” “This year I’m coming at the shows and characters from different ways than we’ve seen them before. I want to feature those whose voices have been underrepresented on Canadian stages and help them make a stand.” And if that sounds like a season of polemics and pontification, Cloran is too much of a man of the theatre not to make sure that his presentations are essentially dramatic, engaging and will appeal to a wide audience. While, maybe, pushing our expectations for the Citadel just a little further up the hill. Take the next show, Redpatch. Throughout his illustrious career in Canadian theatre, Cloran has shown an interest in physical theatre – productions that employ music, dance and other innovative methods of dramatic expression. Remember his Ubuntu, Empire of the Son, Children of God, and The Silver Arrow – all productions that broke with traditional theatrical practices.

Redpatch uses myth, dance, mask and other mystical and dramatic forms of expression to tell the story of a young Canadian Métis soldier named Halfblood, as he grows from a young boy, through his years in a residential school and into the First World War. But his greatest peril lies not in the bombs that fall about him but in a dramatic revelation that makes him question who he really is. The role of the Indigenous people in the First World War is little known. Through the life-story of Halfblood another chapter of that sorry history expands beyond the bounds of racial prejudice to examine an experience of the kind of wartime trauma that leads to self-revelation. “Both universal and personal,” raved one Vancouver reviewer. This is the time of Lauren Gunderson. In 2016, Ms. Gunderson was the most produced living playwright in America. The playwright loves Jane Austen and, looking at the enthusiasm generated by the recent Citadel productions of Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility, so do Citadel theatre-goers. A couple of years back, Gunderson (along with Margot Melcon) wrote a winning and witty sequel to Pride and Prejudice called Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley. The focal point is Mary, whom you may remember

was a minor character — the bookish middle child in the Bennet family. Apparently, the overlooked Mary coped with many of the same societal and personal problems faced by her more famous sister. “Miss Bennet...” is a period pairing of Mary with a gentleman as awkwardly bookish as herself and thus “a celebration of nerd love in all its overeducated glory.” “An unstuffy, highly entertaining and warm-spirited work, the kind of thing multiple generations can enjoy together,” enthused the Chicago Tribune. Promises Cloran, “It will be produced with a real fun contemporary sensibility.” Edmonton’s Nancy McAlear directs eight actors. Sweat is a powerful Pulitzer Prize winning drama from playwright Lynn Nottage. In its early stages, the drama resembled journalism more than a venture in theatre making. She interviewed as many people as she could — all residents of the dying rust belt towns of Pennsylvania. She talked to people in homeless shelters, in government offices, in their homes and in the factories. What she was looking for was the real story of what was happening in American culture. The result was a ripped-from-the-headlines view of what has come to be regarded as Donald Trump’s America — although the play is far more personal than political. Sweat tells the story of a group of friends who have spent their lives working together on the factory floor. When rumours of layoffs begin to stir, rifts form that chip away at their trust and pit them against each other. The Citadel production, which will be directed by Calgary’s Valerie Planche, is set in a working-class bar in a steel town. Sweat

is a play about friendship, loyalty, race, love, and the economy. “Smart, strong, contemporary storytelling,” observes Cloran with hopes of another hit of the proportions of the unexpected success of this year’s The Humans. There’s a song in the upcoming stage musical Matilda, based on the 1988 Roald Dahl children’s novel, in which a precocious fiveyear-old girl with the gift of telekinesis overcomes a disengaged family and imperious school system to reclaim her life. Sings the cheeky kid, “Nobody but me is going to change my story” which underlines the mantra of Cloran’s “REImagine” season. You could call the Broadway and West End hit heartwarming and it certainly has reduced many an audience member to tears (Cloran himself admits to a bit of waterworks action both times he has seen it). But since the original children’s book was written by Dahl (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory/James and the Giant Peach) you can be sure that it will feature the author’s unsentimental, macabre, darkly comic proclivities, making it a grand entertainment for both children and adults.

mar 30 - apr 21, 2019

The next two (actually three) shows of the season demonstrate Cloran’s aforementioned obsession for pushing at the bounds of dramatic storytelling. One of the things he told this column last year just after taking over the Citadel, is that he kept getting lost in the many rooms, hallways and dark corners of the building. “I took to thinking we should take advantage of all those spaces.” Not one to let a good idea languish, he approached the current hot Canadian playwright, Kat Sandler, with a concept: two plays with the same characters, staged at the same time, in two different theatres. The Party, in The Club, will be an actual immersive party — a fundraiser for a forthcoming election. Staged at the same time in the Maclab is The Candidate, a “fullout door-slamming farce” in which a scandal erupts the night of the election itself. Beware the lobby of the Citadel those nights, as actors (probably changing costumes as they go) literally run from one venue to the other. Crash helmets may be necessary. The season ends with another theatre-expanding concept: Shakespeare’s The Tempest, featuring both Deaf and hearing performers on stage together, directed by Josette BushellMingo, the artistic director of Sweden’s National Deaf Theatre. The desert island drama features some of Shakespeare’s most lyrical poetry and the daring concept is a fully integrated staging which is both spoken and signed. “There’s lots of room to play. If we’re going to do a classic, I want to turn that classic on its head.” The production features the participants of the Citadel/ Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program, and stars Lorne Cardinal as “Prospero.”

apr 20 - may 12, 2019

And yes, the Christmas season will officially begin in Edmonton on November 30th when Tom Wood’s enduring production of A Christmas Carol returns to the Maclab stage for a 19th and final time as this beloved adaptation. Adventure awaits.
