Welcome to Peter and the Starcatcher! I love this play. To me, it is everything that is great about theatre. It is fantastic, fun, innovative storytelling, which embraces theatre’s simple, transformative magic and asks you, the audience, to invest your imagination, your belief, and yourself in this story. The actors work as an ensemble, becoming hundreds of different characters and creating all the environments and magic themselves. And what a cast we have! This production is packed with some of the finest actors from Edmonton and across Canada. I am proud to welcome James MacDonald, Artistic Director of Western Canada Theatre in Kamloops, B.C., back to Edmonton, to direct this production. James, with our incredible designers, Megan Koshka, Narda McCarroll, and Bobby Smale, Choreographer Tracey Power, and Music Director Erik Mortimer, have built a fantastic, creative world for us to let our imaginations loose in, and allow ourselves to be transported across oceans to somewhere truly magical. I have two young sons (8 and 5 years old) who love the story of Peter Pan. I can’t wait to watch them watch this production. As a dad, I’m captivated by Peter’s ability to hold on to his youthful hopes and dreams and imagination in this story. I hope my boys never lose that. I hope I never lose that. As Peter says, “To have faith, is to have wings.” Tonight, let’s all fly together. Sincerely,

Daryl Cloran, Artistic Director

PS – We have just announced our 2017/18 Season and it is packed with fantastic productions, including Mamma Mia! and the world premiere of The Silver Arrow: The Untold Story of Robin Hood. Subscriptions are available now. I hope you’ll join us for the entire season!

Students Club

The Citadel Theatre believes that young people are integral to the artistic fabric of our community and we are committed to programming and initiatives that develop their creative voices and encourage their participation. The Maclab Students Club offers a unique glimpse into the world of professional theatre to a wide range of local junior and senior high school students. Prior to select performances of each of our main stage shows, Students Club members gather for a light supper and then participate in a highly engaging, interactive presentation with one of our region’s talented theatre artists. Following the performance, students stay for an informative talkback with members of the production’s cast and crew. Prior to performances of Peter and the Starcatcher, the students enjoyed an interactive workshop on non-traditional theatrical creation with David van Belle. Born in Amsterdam and raised all over Canada, David van Belle is an Alberta-based playwright, director, actor and theatre deviser. He has been Co-Artistic Director of Ghost River Theatre, an ensemble member of One Yellow Rabbit and playwright-in-residence at Alberta Theatre Projects. David is currently the 2017 Writer-in-Residence for the Edmonton Public Library system. He is fascinated by people’s lives and the ways in which they live them; he shares his own beautiful life with his wife Vanessa Sabourin and his daughters Wren and newborn Zadie.

David van Belle

Through the workshop, the students learned the basics of David’s creation methodology and how a collective process impacts and informs story. They now better understand how to uncover story while developing and strengthening the ensemble.

Director’s

notes

Based on a wonderfully irreverent book, Peter and the Starcatcher is often referred to as a prequel to J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan. The playwright prefers to describe it as “an origin story,” or even a “reboot.” Regardless, the characters, situations, dialogue, and even some of the props and costumes will be familiar to anyone who knows Barrie’s classic story in its many variations.

This is a play based in the power of imagination, the joy of make-believe, and the magic and wonder of being a child, seen through the eyes of adults. It is also heavily influenced by some of my favourite comedians, including Groucho Marx. The real pleasure in rehearsing the play was spent in exploration: discovering methods to use simple props in unusual ways, figuring out how to best utilize the entire theatre, and working as an ensemble to portray massive events onstage through movement, sound, and storytelling. There are many bookends associated with this production: Peter Pan was the first production in the Maclab Theatre, and featured two of our current cast members. In a different version, it was also the first production I worked on (as an assistant) during my tenure as associate artistic director of the Citadel. My journey as a theatre director and artistic director began by doing Shakespeare in Hawrelak Park with Free Will Players, with minimal scenery and props, no lighting or sound, and many outstanding young actors, designers, technicians, and administrators. After 27 years working in this community, it seems fitting to wrap up my time in Edmonton by directing a production that embraces the collaborative spirit of those early days, showcasing the versatility, ingenuity, sense of humour, and magnificent talent of Edmonton artists. — James MacDonald

Longbourne, Netherfield Park, Rosing and mighty Pemberly itself came to vibrant life. The brilliant concept was the work of director Bob Baker and was the first of the Citadel shows to benefit from Baker’s lifelong dream of the Citadel/Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program, in which young theatre professionals spent six weeks at the Banff Centre attending master classes. They then came to Edmonton and performed in Tom Wood’s adaptation. The close company relationship that had developed among the mountains of Banff was obvious in an interior literary work that is a study in ensemble interconnection. The Citadel hopes to repeat that feat as the students of the Citadel/Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program, director Baker, adapter Wood and designer Frankish link again to present Austen’s first literary success, Sense and Sensibility, coming up next on the Citadel’s Shoctor Stage. Jane Austen’s name never appeared in her novels – “written by a lady” was the author credit. She wrote only six short books. They now sell in the millions but we’ll never know how many because they are long since out of copyright and anyone can publish them. She was regarded as a successful author in her time but never made much money. She concealed her writing from most of her acquaintances, slipping her writing paper under a blotter when someone entered the room. Though she avoided society, she was charming, intelligent and funny.

At first it might appear that a tale of two young ladies of marriageable age who lived in genteel poverty with their widowed mother and experience love, romance and heartbreak might not be the stuff of today’s theatre. But Austen’s durable tale has shown remarkable endurance. In 1810, years after she wrote Sense and Sensibility, her father wrote to a publisher and offered it to him. The family came up with the necessary funds to have it published paying for the printing, advertising and distribution. It proved to be a modest success but never returned their investment. In fact, in her lifetime she earned about £600 from all her books combined, just enough to find a degree of independence. Surrounded by the love of her family and friends, she lived to be 42 and died in 1817. While her wildly successful contemporary, Sir Walter Scott, whose impact at the time might be compared to J. K. Rowling’s today, was writing his bold adventure novels in fiery letters across the sky, Austen was a miniaturist elevating the trivial to an art form. Sir Walter, however, was a fan, observing in a review, “The big bow-wow strain I can do myself like any now going: the exquisite touch which renders commonplace things and characters interesting from the truth of the description and the sentiments is denied me.” Not everyone was enchanted – Carlyle dismissed her novels as “dishwashings.”

“Austen’s greatest mainstream influence lies in the simple philosophy that ‘the heart wants what it wants’ where true love is more important than his or her social duties.

We don’t know a lot about Austen. She wrote some 3,000 letters, mostly to her older sister Cassandra, but only 160 survive. In 1843, Cassandra destroyed her sister’s letters and cut pieces out of the others to prevent them falling into the hands of relatives and ensuring that “younger nieces did not read any of Jane’s sometimes acid or forthright comments on neighbours and family members.” In succeeding generations, the family expunged and sanitized the already opaque details of her life. Austen and her literary legacy were quietly disappearing. Then, in 1869, the family designated her nephew, James Edward Austen-Leigh, to write a memoir. He described her as “dear aunt Jane” who was uninterested in fame and wrote only in her spare time. It would appear that the real Jane was somewhat different than outlined in the memoir. She relentlessly revised and rewrote her books and was perhaps less content than the family would have us believe. When she was very young, Austen fell in love with one Tom Lefroy, an impassioned but impoverished Irish law student and when finance and convention thrust them apart, they both carried a torch to the end of their lives.

The memoir, however, resonated with Victorian readers and, fascinated by her rectitude and exemplary life, became a big seller rekindling a new interest in the author’s works. Since then, her novels have rarely been out of print. Austen wrote comedies of manners that depict the self-contained, poverty stricken provincial experiences of families in Regency England. Most of her works revolve around the delicate business of providing husbands for daughters of a marriageable age. Her characters are vividly drawn and she writes with a superb sense of comic irony, skewering rich and poor alike. Observes Elinor in Sense and Sensibility, “I wish, as well as everybody else to be perfectly happy; but, like everybody else, it must be in my own way.” Austen lures us into a world of gossip and bonnets. There are carriages, and ball gowns and romance. There is always a simple man of good fortune, like Mr. Darcy, around somewhere, a great plot and (always) a happy ending. She exhibited a sharp wit and wrote strong female characters. Her feminism was soft but she was still one of the first writers to suggest that women could martyr themselves for love and not increased social standing. She gave female characters the right to be happy – something we casually accept today. Observed Zoe Williams in The Guardian, “Austen’s greatest mainstream influence lies in the simple philosophy that ‘the heart wants what it wants’ where true love is more important than his or her social duties.”

Austen has never been more popular than she is today. Just look at the endless stream of films (the latest being Love and Friendship, released just last year) and TV adaptions. There have been sequels, prequels, mashups and homages. Consider the Bollywood glitz of Bride of Prejudice in 2004. PD James wrote Death Comes to Pemberly in 2011, followed by a BBC miniseries. The recent book, Longbourn, by Jo Baker imagines the below stairs answer to Pride and Prejudice where the servants take centre stage. And who could forget the 2016 movie, Pride and Prejudice, and Zombies? Said Helen Fielding when pounding Pride and Prejudice into Bridget Jones Diary, “Jane Austen’s plots are so very good and have been market researched over the centuries, so I decided to simply steal one of them.”

language is incredible. “TheI found all I had to do was paraphrase.”

Sense and Sensibility tells the story of the impoverished Dashwood family, focusing on the sisters Marianne and Elinor. Marianne is open and enthusiastic and becomes infatuated with the attractive John Willoughby. Willoughby is a dashing fellow and it’s easy to see why Marianne is attracted to him but, under his smooth exterior, he is a fortune hunting cad. He deserts her for an heiress and she eventually makes a sensible union with local bachelor Colonel Brandon. Elinor, the flip side of Marianne, is prudent and discreet and remains constant toward her lover, Edward Ferrars and, after overcoming some reversals, marries him. Not exactly the stuff of today’s cynical self-aware world. There were other warning signs in Austen’s wry, skeptical narrative voice which might have proven difficult to capture for a 21st century theatrical audience. But fate, and Austen’s own attitude toward her work conspired to assist her adapters. The author, who was then 19 years old, wrote the original Sense and Sensibility as a series of letters between her characters – as was the style of the day. But she was unhappy with the result and so changed the narrative style to emphasize dialogue. When he began his adaptation for Pride and Prejudice, Wood was agreeably surprised. He told me at the time, “Austen actually wrote more dialogue than Dickens” (Wood is also responsible for the superlative adaptation of the long-running adaptation of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol at the Citadel). “Whole scenes, whole chapters are virtually all dialogue. The plot takes place inside the dialogue, moving the action. The language is incredible. I found all I had to do was paraphrase. The dialogue is very specific to each of the characters – to the way they shape a thought. That makes it great dialogue for theatre. In other times, Austen could easily have been a playwright.” The family Dashwood and all their friends (and enemies) in all their incredible lives will spill out onto the mainstage of the Citadel Theatre, beginning on April 22.
