DONOR PROFILE ray and elaine hook How long have you been attending productions at the Citadel Theatre? We settled in the Camrose area in 2002. Both of us have been involved in music and dancing (mainly Scottish Country) throughout our lives. Cultural activities were an essential part of our retirement plan. We bought our first season subscription to the Main Stage series in 2002, and we have been loyal subscribers ever since.
Why do you choose to donate to the Citadel? We always support those things that we are either interested in, or passionate about, and in the Citadel’s case, both of these criteria are met! We know that live theatre in some parts of Canada has been struggling of late, so we just want to help support the Citadel in our own limited way. We have had the opportunity in our travels to watch live theatre in Europe, the UK, the USA and Canada, and we have come to understand and appreciate the importance of the Arts in society. With my previous career in the Canadian Army, my wife and I enjoyed postings to many parts of Canada, and we sought out live theatre as one constant for good entertainment. It has always been a part of our cultural lives.
18 PLAYING WITH FIRE
Do you think the arts are an integral part of a thriving community? Absolutely! We firmly believe that support to the Arts is critical to ensuring its place in society in order to permit anyone the opportunity to experience all that live theatre has to offer. The Arts add a necessary balance in life that is needed, especially in today’s fast moving and uncertain world.
Of all of the productions you have seen, which has been your favourite and why? My choice has always been Stones in his Pockets with John Ullyatt (my favourite actor) – what an incredible display of versatility and professionalism both actors showed in that play – 35 characters between them... it was very thought provoking as well. My wife’s choice was A Few Good Men – from excellent casting, to superb acting and story treatment, it was excellent. But – and there is always a BUT – we can’t forget to mention A Christmas Carol, which we have now come to see the last four years! There is no better way to start the Christmas season.
Which production are you looking forward to the most in the second half of the season? Playing With Fire: The Theo Fleury Story. I have played hockey for a lot of my life. As the game is such an intrinsic part of the Canadian way of life, this treatment of abuse is vital to the healing process for abused players.
Winnipeg’s second largest live theatre has been telling the stories of the community for more than 40 years. With a focus on new and contemporary plays, both local and Canadian, PTE produces a season of five plays, plus a Family Holiday Show, and operates a theatre school with classes for adults, teens and children.

ROBBINS ACADEMY The Robbins Academy at the Citadel is the most comprehensive program for creative development in professional theatre in Canada. THE ELDON AND ANNE FOOTE THEATRE SCHOOL is the oldest and largest theatre school in Edmonton. We provide year round classes for all ages and experience levels, teaching physical, technical, and creative skills in both acting and musical theatre. Over 1,000 students annually are taught by our faculty of 25 local theatre professionals. COLE DORCHESTER began taking classes at the Foote Theatre School in January 2009, and has taken many classes and camps over the last six years. It’s been a great fit for Cole who loves telling stories, role playing, singing, and anything that lets him be creative. Cole is a grade 9 student at Victoria School of the Arts with drama and choral as his options. This year, he is taking his first musical theatre class at the Foote Theatre School, and is enjoying combining acting with song. Cole’s participation in classes at the Citadel has provided him with memorable experiences including being in The Haunt at Fort Edmonton’s Hallowe’en Spooktacular, and most recently, landing the role of Reggie (the mayor’s son) in the upcoming Canadian television series Delmer & Marta. “ I have been at the Foote Theatre School for almost half my life. For me, it is something I can always look forward to. There is a profound sense of community and ensemble that I feel while participating in the classes, there are always more skills to learn, and new people to get to know. Long story short, I just can't get enough of it.” COLE DORCHESTER

It was “the devil’s music.” It was blamed for inciting violence, sexual aggression and general bad behaviour. Its pulsating rhythms found their earliest genesis in the pagan rituals in Africa. It travelled across the sea in the dark holds of slaver ships to rise again out of the churches, juke joints and bars of the Mississippi delta in the 19th century. It was “low down” music with frank sexual lyrics. (As Ray Charles sang exuberantly a century later in his hit, “What’d I say,” – “See the girl with the red dress on, She can do the birdland all night long.”) Good Christians were exhorted from the pulpit not to listen. For much of his life the son of strict bible-reading parents, Jerry Lee Lewis felt he was going to hell for singing rock n’ roll, the bastard spawn of this devil inspired music. And yet, despite threats of divine retribution, “the blues,” with its hypnotic combination of European folk music, spirituals, field hollers and the call and response of sea chanties (and all the other influences it absorbed), remains with us 150 years later.
“The influence of the blues is world wide. Some of the greatest blues players don’t even speak English. They have no connection with North America at all and yet they have found a way to make the music their own.” The blues were nothing less than a narrative of the lives of a people moving slowly and painfully toward freedom and acceptance. Its forms are many but it’s all there; the cruelty of

the police, laments for lost loves, the oppression of the white folks, hard times, pickin’ cotton, the chain gangs, devils, gambling, magic and that voracious “girl with the red dress on.” The “low down” music of yesteryear is now elevated to the position of art form and remains at the root of soul, jazz, bebop, rock ‘n roll, rap, hip hop, boogie woogie and funk. You don’t have to look very far to find it in the music of Duke Ellington. Glenn Miller used a blues notation in “In the Mood,” George Gershwin the same in “Rhapsody in Blue.” The Beatles would learn blues licks by listening to the records of the masters and copying them note for note. In fact, if you listen to early Beatles recordings you can hear a buoyant Paul McCartney letting fly with Little Richard type high-pitched whoops. Late at night, a young Elvis Presley lay awake listening to what then was called “race music” on the radio. In February, actor/singer/producer/playwright Raoul Bhaneja will bring his much heralded concert/theatre hybrid Life, Death and The Blues to the Citadel. As an actor, Raoul Bhaneja has appeared in many movies (Cold Creek Manor/The Sentinel – starring Michael Douglas), he is ubiquitous on television (The Newsroom/Murdoch Mysteries/Flashpoint) and, after graduating from the National Theatre School, has appeared on stages from Canada’s National Arts Centre to Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London. His father is South Asian and his mother, Irish. At first glance, that may seem like a strange

cultural heritage for a blues performer but, as Bhaneja points out, the art form has come a long way from the bayou. “The influence of the blues is world wide. Some of the greatest blues players don’t even speak English. They have no connection with North America at all and yet they have found a way to make the music their own. You can find the blues in something as simple and basic as three-chord punk rock but, when it’s functioning at its greatest, there is an extremely complex musical interplay.” Bhaneja grew up in Ottawa with a love of theatre and an obsession with the blues. “There are really two journeys in my life,” he says. “I started as a musician at the same time I began as an actor. In those years there were a lot of blues greats playing the clubs. You could actually talk to these guys, unlike a rock show where the stars are protected from any contact with fans. In the clubs you could, on a quiet night, walk right up to Matt Murphy (best known for recordings and “The Blues Brothers” films) and talk to him for hours.” His many awards and five records attest that he is not trifling with an art form. “The blues are not part of my roots but, to those who make the music, you can’t go into it blindly. You can’t be ignorant of its roots. The blues speaks to some very important cultural values. As a kid when I first began to discover the blues, I thought of myself as an explorer, like in ancient Egypt. In future generations, I think people will look back at the arts and culture of the people who came out of the Mississippi Delta as being as precious as the artifacts that Howard Carter found in King Tut’s tomb.”
The experience is priceless.

“Blues players strive not to sound like anyone else. Ultimately they must sound like themselves.” I must say I enjoyed talking with Bhaneja. He is a man of passion and it transmits through the phone lines. But, as his career demonstrates, he packs a lot into a short period of time. He was unavailable during much of the Christmas season but found some time while preparing to take his family on a car trip. While talking, he was fending off kids, pumping gas into his car and paying with a credit card. I’m sure I heard at one point, “I’ll have a double double.” And he made perfect sense the whole time. Back in 2006, Bhaneja and director Jeff Stevenson set about a daunting project – to put together a one-man Hamlet. Bhaneja saw the undertaking as mirroring the kind of drive that sets blues artists apart. “Blues players strive not to sound like anyone else. Ultimately they must sound like themselves. You hear the first three notes of a B.B. King solo and you immediately know who it is. I try to pick projects that I’m really passionate about. That’s what attracted me to The One-Man Hamlet. Other actors have come to me and said ‘I saw the Hamlet, man, and it was cool. I would like to give it a try.’ But, I suspect, they never will. It’s just too big. For one thing you have to memorize 50 thousand lines. I try to find pieces that are really right for me and share that with audiences.” Audiences all over the world

(including Edmonton) embraced Bhaneja’s Hamlet as he carried it across Canada, to the Edinburgh Fringe, the Royal Shakespeare Company and Off-Broadway in New York. Bhaneja describes Life, Death and The Blues as something he has been thinking about for a long time. “I wanted to bring together my two worlds. Putting the show together forced me to take a closer look at my own personal story. I began to question things like identity and race. Cultural appropriation. I felt I wanted to talk about those things in a theatrical context. At the time, I was playing with my band (“Raoul and The Big Time”) and I realized the blues club is not the place for that kind of show. Doing it in a theatre allows the concert feel while attacking the bigger questions.” He enlisted the help of long-time friend (and ex-ballerina) Eda Holmes to direct and shape the works. Relying on her ballet background, Holmes, one of Canada’s busiest theatre directors, brought a visual element to the play. (“If she had a problem with a scene – she would get up on stage and dance it out”). Cameron Davis came on board to design some multi-media visual displays. (Davis is a close associate of filmmaker Atom Egoyan.) “The show starts off quite dramatically,” says Bhaneja, “but slowly the music begins to take over.” A large part of that music is provided by Juno Award winning R & B legend Divine Brown. Bhaneja promises to bring along some of the best blues musicians in the country and has put a local wrinkle into the show. There’ll be some local blues performers and something in keeping with the long road that is the story of the blues – an opportunity to jam. “We’re calling it ‘The Blues Challenge’. It’s an opportunity for young people under 25 to audition and join us on stage. That’s one of the things about the blues – they were handed down from generation to generation.” Life, Death and the Blues premiered in Theatre Passe Muraille in Toronto two years ago and, says Bhaneja, broke all box-office records. It’s now on the road and will open, as an add-on to the regular season, in “The Club” on February 11 and runs through March 1.

Juli Elkiw
Costume Designer
Juli couldn’t be more thrilled to be working on a show combining two of her favourite things in the whole world – theatre and hockey. Though she was born and raised primarily as a Canucks fan, during her youth she rarely had an opportunity to cheer them on in the playoffs and as a result she has fond memories of watching her fellow western Canadians win the cup in 1989. After making her home in Calgary and designing costumes for a number of local theatre companies over the last decade, even her family has come to accept her love of the Calgary Flames.
