Message From The
Artistic Director This season, our productions are opportunities for us to
ReImagine familiar stories through a new lens. Redpatch is a WWI story told from the perspective of a Métis soldier. November 11, 2018 is the 100th anniversary of the Armistice that ended World War I. We are proud to present this production in honour of that anniversary. It is a poignant time for us to consider all of the brave men and women who served for our country in WWI and in the 100 years since. Redpatch is a stunning production created by Raes Calvert and Sean Harris Oliver of Vancouver’s Hardline Productions. When I first saw the production, I was struck by the beautiful fusion of storytelling and dance. If you saw our production of Ubuntu last season, you’ll know I have a particular affinity for stories that explore storytelling through dance and movement. I think Redpatch is an example of truly innovative theatre, both in its content and its theatrical approach. I’m excited for you to see it. We are proud to partner with Hardline Productions and with the Arts Club Theatre Company in Vancouver on this production. This production will be presented at the Arts Club later this season, and I have no doubt you will see it performed across Canada in upcoming seasons. The Citadel is committed to building a strong connection with Indigenous artists, and to making our stage a welcoming space to share Indigenous stories. We appreciate the opportunity to live, create, and perform on Treaty No. 6 territory. Thanks so much for joining us for this impactful story about our history, and this important conversation about our future.
Daryl Cloran, Artistic Director
We wish to acknowledge that the land on which we gather is Treaty No. 6 territory and a traditional meeting ground and home of the First Nations, including both the treaty signatories – Cree, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Stony and Cree-Iroquois – as well as other Indigenous peoples, such as the Blackfoot and Métis, who occupied this land. We extend our appreciation for the opportunity to live, create and perform on this territory. HISTORICAL
The armistice of November 11, 1918, brought relief to the whole world. Never before had there been such a conflict. For a nation of eight million people, Canada’s war effort was remarkable. More than 650,000 men and women from Canada and Newfoundland served — over 66,000 gave their lives and more than 172,000 were wounded. It was this immense sacrifice that led to Canada’s separate signature on the Peace Treaty. No longer viewed as just a colony of England, Canada had truly achieved nation status. This nationhood was purchased by the gallant men who stood fast at Ypres, stormed Regina Trench, climbed the heights of Vimy Ridge, captured Passchendaele, and entered Mons on November 11, 1918. Close to 4,000 Native men (Aboriginal, First Nations, Métis) served in the Canadian Forces during The Great War, an extraordinary number given the limited civil rights accorded to these people at the time. Canadian Federal policy extended many post-war benefits to First Nations veterans; however, since many men had given up their status in order to enlist, they were denied these benefits upon their return to Canada.
By the end of The Great War, many First Nations soldiers had achieved near-legendary status as scouts, trench-raiders, and snipers, drawing on their prewartime experience in hunting and wilderness survival. If the story of REDPATCH inspires you to learn more about our Canadian history, Hardline Productions, with the generous support of the Department of Canadian Heritage, has created an educational website which offers deeper insight into Canada’s involvement in the First World War. We invite you to visit www.redpatch.ca to access learning opportunities available via this online resource.
creators’ Redpatch is a story that was inspired by the sacrifice that Aboriginal, First Nations, and Métis soldiers made for Canada in World War I, also known as “The Great War” or “The War to End All Wars.” The military history of Aboriginal veterans, and their contributions to the various conflicts that this country has been involved in, is a subject that is relatively unknown to the average Canadian citizen. With the hope of drawing attention to this obscure part of our national history, we are extremely proud to contribute Redpatch to Canada’s theatre canon. We are also thrilled that we are able to present a full cast of Indigenous actors for this production. Not all the characters encountered in Redpatch are First Nations, but we felt that this particular production should highlight the work of some of Canada’s most talented Indigenous artists. This cast includes representation from nations including: Acadian, Cree, Denesuliné, Kluane, Métis, Nuu-chah-nulth, and Stoney Nakoda. We started dreaming this play up nearly six years ago. The research and development processes have taken us on many adventures: from remote Nootka Island off the west coast of Vancouver Island to Niagara-on-the-Lake for a staged reading at the Shaw Festival. Creating Redpatch has been a life-changing journey for both of us, and in so many ways it has come to define our own artistic practices. We would sincerely like to thank Daryl Cloran and the entire Citadel family for enabling this wonderful journey to continue. And finally, we would like to thank you for being here with us; thank you for sharing in this small piece of our nation’s history. – OVER THE TOP BOYS! – Raes Calvert & Sean Harris Oliver 24 CITADEL THEATRE 2018/19 SEASON

Colin MacLean is the dean of Edmonton theatre reviewers. In 2007, Colin was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award for Outstanding Contribution to Theatre in Edmonton at the Sterling Awards.
A few years back, playwright Lauren Gunderson and her former literary
manager Margot Melcon were on a six-hour drive to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. In a spirited discussion, Gunderson asked grandly, “What does American theatre need?” Replied Melcon, “... a good Christmas show. Something clever, heartwarming and familyfriendly.” Gunderson offered, “You know what people love? Christmas and Jane Austen...” By the time they finished the drive, they had outlined a script on a Starbucks napkin: a holiday reunion for the Bennet sisters of Pride and Prejudice and a courtship plot for Mary.

“Mary...?” I hear you say. “I don’t recall any Mary.” Well, she’s certainly there.
Austen wrote about an impecunious early 19th century family blessed with five daughters. Especially Lizzie – but then, you know all about her. Mary was the dweeby one, given to much introspection, playing the pianoforte and solitary reading – so boring she disappears from the novel completely for long pages. She had no marital prospects and seemed unlikely to attract any. Ever. The result of that animated mobile discussion – a play called Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley was duly written and became an immediate success, celebrating a world premiere at the same time in three separate theatres in Chicago, San Francisco, and Washington D.C. It has gone on to become hugely popular – cementing Gunderson’s position as the most produced American playwright in North America last year. That’s more than August Wilson or Eugene O’Neill – and just short of the champ, William Shakespeare. Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley, the story of what happened two years after Lizzie is paired off with the dashing Mr. Darcy, is next on the Shoctor stage of the Citadel. Apparently, there is a place in the “throbbing romantic novel” for Mary, who is, alas, an unreconstructed nerd. The sisters have come to celebrate the holidays at Darcy’s grand estate. Present are Jane (doing very well with her new husband Mr. Bingley, thank you – and expecting their first child) and Lydia Wickham (one of Lizzie’s ditzy sisters). Darcy, the

Lord of the Manner himself, is the first one to notice how alive, articulate, and witty Mary has become. But her prospects are very dim in Regency England. Longbourn, the Bennet home, will fall to Mary’s male cousin and, when her parents die, Mary will, no doubt, be turned out. So, poor Mary is stuck with her parents – her flowering to go unnoticed and ignored. Enter cousin Arthur de Bourgh, a nephew of that horrid prig, Lady Catherine. Turns out that Arthur, just down from Oxford, even outdoes Mary in social awkwardness. He also spends much of his life between book covers and is even more shy and bumbling than Mary. Arthur, however, is to inherit Lady Catherine’s estate, which makes him a desirable mate to any of the husband-hungry maids of the area. Will nerd love triumph in all its bookish glory? Will Mary and Arthur come to the logical union of two lonely souls fated for each other or will he succumb to the blandishments of the local belles and rigid social norms? As the 18th century turns, there is still not much room for personal happiness for maiden ladies. As Mary reminds Arthur, in a particularly powerful scene – he has the freedom a woman lacks and that he, unlike a woman, can shape his own future. Critics have universally noted Austen’s wonderful wit, humanity, humour, and clever dialogue and Gunderson has displayed an uncanny ability to continue Austen’s oeuvre in logical and completely believable ways. In fact, it has been observed that the central character mirrors Gunderson herself – smart, collaborative, and optimistic. A perceptive woman of our time, the playwright has actively engaged in a life-long quest to expand the ranks of theatre

in a male-dominated world. Her body of work has provided nuanced characterizations of independent women both ordinary and extraordinary. She has faith in the power of a woman to carry a play – to be funny, flawed, and heroic. Her writing has explored history, scientific exploration, and Shakespeare (Exit, Pursued by a Bear). As the playwright told the American Statesman, “My plays encourage strong feminism and diversity. There is no lack of extremely talented female actors in American theatre today but playwrights continue to write the best roles for men and fewer juicy parts for women. They, like myself, are sick of it and have had to prove how a woman’s story can be a universal one.” She hopes her popularity isn’t so much a symbol of her own success but more of a sign of a large political movement in American Theatre, “...one that is more ready to focus on strange and strong stories of proud women ready to embrace non-white stories and one that is unafraid of rebelliously funny and political plays.”
is the place I go to ask the biggest questions “Theatre I can think of – and put them out on a human scale.” Gunderson’s plays, though unquestionably political at heart, stand as strong character studies. She does not preach to her audiences but instead mixes her activism with humour and joy. Despite her play’s metaphysical weight, she embraces emotion – Christmas

has this great ability to tap into the “Gundersoncontemporary sensibility while preserving the essence of the original.” In selecting Miss Bennet for his season, Cloran was intrigued with the idea of what would happen to the characters after Austen’s highly satisfying ending (no doubt also intrigued by the resounding success that both Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility enjoyed in earlier Citadel productions). “It’s great fun to poke around in the original and find clues that are hidden there – where the concepts and characters spring from. Gunderson has this great ability to tap into the contemporary sensibility while preserving the essence of the original.” Says the director of the Citadel production, Edmonton theatre artist Nancy McAlear, “There is a strong what might be called a feminist streak in Pride and Prejudice, but there is a lot more than that. It’s about not compromising yourself – of being happy with who you are. And that you can find love despite all the social pressures that stand against it.”
The Arts Club Theatre Company is the largest theatre company in Western Canada. Each year, over a quarter of a million people experience the best in professional theatre at its three venues: the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage, Granville Island Stage, and Goldcorp Stage at the BMO Theatre Centre, as well as on tour throughout the province. Its popular productions range from musicals and contemporary comedies to new works and classics. We are excited to have Hardline Productions, our 2018/2019 Company in Residence, join us next spring with Redpatch — one of three co-productions this season with the Citadel Theatre.

To McAlear, directing Miss Bennet at the Citadel is a culmination of a love story that began nearly 40 years ago when, as a child, she studied drama at the Citadel’s Saturday morning theatre classes. She then went on to a distinguished career as an actress both on stage and in the movies (she played a dancing lesbian phone sex operator in Blues Brothers 2000) and performed all over the country – winning a Sterling Award in Edmonton along the way. In recent years, she has turned to stage direction. Those who are expecting a traditional approach to the classic Austen work will not be disappointed in her production but the director intends to probe Gunderson’s unique approach. While scrupulously following Austen’s sensibilities, the play “...is really written for a modern context. The production will look very Austenesque but the important thing will be to keep it honest to both yesterday and today.” The director is looking forward to working with Mikaela Davies as Mary Bennet. In her short career in theatre, Ms. Davies has stormed onto the Ontario scene. Already she has illuminated a number of plays for Soulpepper Theatre and last year impressed Stratford by both directing and starring on stage – pulling down some very impressive reviews (and an outstanding actress nomination) for her lead role in the Jacobean tragedy The Changeling. Also a pianist, she’s excited about playing Mary Bennet and chuckles McAlear, “She’s now practicing her Beethoven so she can play live on stage.” Miss Bennet delves into questions of freedom, duty, and happiness so deftly that you hardly notice it has a revisionist message. Like the original, the dialogue sparkles and speaks as much to contemporary audiences as to those of 118 years ago. Beginning on November 17, we’re all invited to a festive Christmas at Pemberley at the Citadel.
