Message From The
ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Welcome to Ring of Fire! This is an exciting production for us for many reasons, but certainly the main reason is that it is the first time we have produced a show in the summer! Edmonton is such an incredibly vibrant city in the summer, with so many festivals and celebrations to participate in – we wanted to be part of the fun! Thanks very much for joining us on this exciting new venture. And what a great production to start with! Ring of Fire is a celebration of the legendary Johnny Cash, through his music. This production features six incredible performers singing (and playing!) all of Johnny’s most memorable songs.
We’re so happy to welcome back Edmonton’s own Tracey Flye as the director of this production. Tracey is one of Canada’s most sought-after directors, and she grew up right here in Edmonton! Our thanks to Tracey, Music Director Steven Greenfield, our incredible designers, and this spectacular cast for this fantastic production! We have lots of great musicals coming up in our season, including: the uplifting drama, The Color Purple; the Canadian premiere of the recent U.K. smash hit, Six; and a musical production of As You Like It, filled with 25 songs by the Beatles! We hope you’ll join us for all of them! Thanks so much for supporting live theatre here in Edmonton. Have a great summer!
Daryl Cloran, Artistic Director
We wish to acknowledge that the land on which we gather is Treaty No. 6 territory
and a traditional meeting ground and home of the First Nations, including both the treaty signatories – Cree, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Stony and Cree-Iroquois – as well as other Indigenous peoples, such as the Blackfoot and Métis, who occupied this land. We extend our appreciation for the opportunity to live, create and perform on this territory. DIRECTOR’S Notes
Johnny Cash. Just two
words, but boy, do they ever pack a punch. He was “Johnny” to his public, “J.R.” to those close to him and just “John” to those he loved the most. He was a patriot and an Air Force veteran, but never declared support for any political party. In fact, he claimed he never voted in his life. He was a man whose heart beat with the rhythm of love and social justice and who was too complex a thinker to be held to one ideology.
Throughout my life I have always been drawn to story-telling, to those who make them and to those who tell them. Johnny Cash was both – a storyteller who was able to weave his words into the fabric of our consciousness. But it is his humanity that draws me to his music the most. He was as human as they come, full of contradiction, foible, joy, and love. Deeply troubled most of his life, he struggled to overcome addiction and insecurity and it was that pain and struggle that often fueled his art and propelled him forward through his most difficult obstacles, enabling him “to better see the light.” Johnny Cash spent a lifetime championing what he believed was right and just and stood for those whose struggle didn’t have a voice. His voice was theirs. To live inside his music allows us to take the journey of his life with him and in so doing, to journey through our own. His voice is ours. – Tracey Flye

RING OF FIRE 29
FORESHADOWING with Colin MacLean
July 20 - Aug. 11/19
Noting the hold-over success of Million Dollar Quartet a couple of seasons back, the theatre chose Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash. No, this is not a Legends in Concert kind of production nor a processed, pre-produced made-in-America summer filler; but a musical and dramatic presentation celebrating the spirit (and songs) of the Man in Black. Although it has been staged before – notably on Broadway in 2006 – this is a Citadel production, directed by the busy Tracey Flye. The actress/dancer/choreographer/director was a long-time Edmonton resident and has helmed a bewildering number of productions over the years. You’ll enjoy the fruits of her labour tonight. The season relaunches on September 21 with the musical version of The Color Purple. Alice Walker won the Pulitzer Prize for her book which was made into a successful film by Steven Spielberg and then a stage musical. The epic tale chronicles the story of an African-American woman from the American South in the early years of the last century. “There will be 16 African-Canadian performers in the production, co-produced by the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, and directed by our choreographer for Matilda, Kimberley Rampersad,” enthuses Cloran.

“We had our moment to bask in the sun this year during the presentation of the Tonys. The producers gave us some credit for Hadestown’s triumphs

2019/20 SEASON (Best Musical among a long list of wins).” Cloran’s persuasive campaign of theatrical seduction convinced the producers to tryout the production at the Citadel in November 2017. The producers were lavish in their praise of the production and how important it was to them on the long road to Broadway. So earlier last season, Daryl found himself in London’s West End invited to the English premiere of Hadestown. Hoping to repeat that success, he spoke to the producers of a glitzy show that was already a big hit in the West End. It was called Six, a show based on the lives of the six wives of Henry VIII – but told from their point of view. The exuberant, celebratory musical was born in the Edinburgh Fringe, and with lively music (the sort of upbeat pop sound of Spice Girls), it proved to be an audience magnet. Again his blandishments prevailed. Six premieres on the Shoctor stage on November 2. Says Cloran, “These women are taking back their stories. They are only known because of their relationship with one man. This is female empowerment using pop music. It’s smart – and really funny.” At the end of November, Cloran will be directing a whole new take on a beloved classic – Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. “It’s a story that everyone knows and loves and we want to make sure that all the things that were important in our previous production will remain.”

FORESHADOWING with Colin MacLean
Jan. 11 - Feb. 2/20
So Cloran sat down to talk ideas with writer David van Belle – an Alberta-based playwright, director, and actor. Says Cloran, “We were looking for something nostalgia-based that we could tap into and kept coming back to the ‘40 and ‘50s. That was a period when many of today’s pop Christmas songs were written and movies such as Miracle on 34th Street and It’s a Wonderful Life were released. We expect to continue to use our young people as part of the production and maintain our relationship with the Food Bank. And yes, it will be a lavish production.” Starting January 11, the Citadel will be presenting the Canadian Premiere of Cost of Living. Martyna Majok’s play won the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and examines relationships between disabled and abled persons. The highly regarded play will feature two disabled performers. “We have had great successes in recent years with cutting-edge contemporary drama (The Humans/Sweat). This is a modern classic,” observes Cloran.
Feb. 15 - Mar. 15/20
Last summer (as director and with considerable glee) Cloran cut a good deal out of Shakespeare’s As You Like It and filled the holes with music pulled from the Beatles oeuvre. “I got a real chuckle

2019/20 SEASON when just about every review began with something like ‘When I first heard about this concept, I didn’t think I was going to like it. But I loved it!’” Vancouver audiences turned the show into the biggest hit in the history of Bard on the Beach. As You Like It opens on February 15. Cloran will direct. Todd Babiak’s The Garneau Block is probably high on the best seller lists of books written about an Edmonton suburb. “Not all novels make great plays, but I could see his characters on a stage and really felt there was something universal about the novel,’’ says Cloran. “I asked Belinda Cornish to write a draft and by the end of the first act we were all in laughter and tears. She really found the heart of those characters – and a way to make the entire novel dramatic.” Who knew that a university area cul-de-sac would be filled with such colourful characters? There’s every possibility that if we wait for a bit, an outrageous British comedy company called Mischief Theatre might take over the world. A couple of years ago in London, they had three shows running simultaneously in the West End. The yuks just don’t stop and you will laugh ‘til it hurts. The Citadel will be presenting Peter Pan Goes Wrong and the title is pretty well the plot. Again through Cloran’s efforts with

FORESHADOWING with Colin MacLean the producers, the show will be a North American Premiere but with an all-Canadian cast. The Citadel has borrowed one of Mischief Theatre’s own directors, Adam Meggido, to help import the madness. Turns out, Meggido is no stranger to Edmonton audiences – he has travelled to Edmonton frequently for Rapid Fire Theatre’s summer festival, Improvaganza.

This year, the Rice Theatre returns for a season of plays. Says Cloran, “people are continuously telling me about great shows they saw over the years in the Rice. We have two 700-seat theatres and many shows demand a smaller audience to work. I want to stage innovative smaller productions, work with local performers and move closer to our audiences. And the Rice is perfect for that.” There will be three shows in the new Highwire Series. Coming from Belgium, Fight Night is a daring new adventure in audience participation. Five performers will come out on stage and vie for your attention. Audience members will get a special voting device – and, after an initial pitch from the performers, one after the other, vote them off the stage.
Feb. 1 - 23/20
Apr. 18 - May 10/20
In February, John Ullyatt, who was the formidable Miss Trunchbull of Matilda, stars in a highly involving, emotion driven one-person show, Every Brilliant Thing. “One of the best scripts I’ve read in the past 10 years,” says Cloran of Duncan Macmillan’s heart wrenching, hilarious play. A boy makes up a list of things that will cheer up his mother after she attempts suicide. As the years flash by, it becomes apparent that the list might just help him save himself. And the season ends with After the Fire, a dark comedy by Edmonton playwright Matthew MacKenzie that dramatically explores the aftermath of the Fort McMurray fire. “The play has been in the works for some time and just keeps getting better,” says the unquenchable Daryl Cloran. “We’ll showcase it here and send it out into the world.”
