The Maclab Enterprises Students Club is a Citadel Theatre/Robbins Academy program that offers a unique glimpse into the world of professional theatre to a wide range of junior and senior high school students from Edmonton and surrounding areas. n the first three Tuesdays and Wednesdays of our season’s productions, Students Club O members gather to enjoy a small reception before the show and then participate in a highly engaging, interactive presentation/demonstration involving one of the Citadel’s talented theatre artists. Following the performance, students are invited to stay for a lively talkback session with members of the production’s cast and crew. Prior to seeing Romeo and Juliet, the students will be joined by their host, actor and singer, Patricia Zentilli and special guest, Jonathan Purvis, the fight choreographer for the show. Jonathan will be sharing his knowledge of the world of stage combat, and will give the students inside information on the creation of the combat scenes in Romeo and Juliet. Students will also have the opportunity to volunteer to learn some simple fight choreography, and get a close up view of one of the swords used in the show. Jonathan is an advanced actor combatant with Fight Directors Canada and the Nordic Stage Fight Society. He was the fight choreographer for the Citadel’s production of The Penelopiad as well as A Midsummer Night’s Dream where he appeared as the mischievous Puck. If you would like to become part of this season’s Students Club, or require more information about the program, please contact Shirley Tran, Group Sales, at 780-428-2127. For individual students who are interested in joining please email Shirley at groupsales@citadeltheatre.com and leave your name, contact information and the name of the school you attend.

About the
Play is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare early in his career about two young star-crossed lovers whose deaths ultimately reconcile their feuding families. It was among Shakespeare’s most popular plays during his lifetime and, along with Hamlet, is one of his most frequently performed plays. Today, the title characters are regarded as archetypal young lovers. Romeo and Juliet’s plot is based on an Italian story translated into verse as The Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet by Arthur Brooke in 1562 and retold in Palace of Pleasure by William Painter in 1567. Shakespeare borrowed heavily from both but developed supporting characters, particularly Mercutio and Paris. Believed to have been written between 1591 and 1595, it was first published in a quarto version in 1597. This text was of poor quality, and later editions corrected it, bringing it more in line with Shakespeare’s original. Shakespeare’s use of his poetic dramatic structure, especially effects such as switching between comedy and tragedy to heighten tension, his expansion of minor characters, and his use of sub-plots to embellish the story, has been praised as an early sign of his dramatic skill. The play ascribes different poetic forms to different characters, sometimes changing the form as the character develops. Romeo, for example, grows more adept at the sonnet over the course of the play. Romeo and Juliet has been adapted numerous times for stage, film, musical and opera. During the English Restoration, it was revived and heavily revised. David Garrick’s 18th-century version modified several scenes, removing material then considered indecent, and Georg Benda’s operatic adaptation omitted much of the action and added a happy ending. Performances in the 19th century restored the original text, and focused on greater realism. In the 20th and into the 21st century, the play has been adapted in versions as diverse as George Cukor’s comparatively faithful 1936 production, Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 version, Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 MTV-inspired Romeo + Juliet, and the 2013 non-Shakespearian adaptation by Carlo Carlei.

Back in 1936, Carl Hubbell was baseball’s #1 pitcher. His signature delivery boasted a particular spin that fluttered and dropped, went in different directions and behaved in unexpected ways. It was called the “fadeaway” but Hubbell had his own name for it. He called it the “screwball.” The word entered the language as a slang description of anything eccentric and unpredictable. It didn’t take long for the term to be applied to a new kind of comic film that came out of Hollywood. The screwball comedy really sprang from Hollywood’s misspent youth. In an effort to attract audiences in the ‘20’s and early ‘30’s the movies threw a big party. There was nudity, suggestive innuendo and lots of flappers losing their inhibitions (and other things) on the silver screen. Mae West invited us to, “Come up and see me sometime.” They may have celebrated all that sex and booze in decadent New York, but middle America became increasingly horrified. When it began to look as if box office would suffer, Hollywood created the dreaded Hays Office to “clean up” the movies. No longer could gangsters live the good life – until they were shot down by the cops. The words “god,” “hell,” “nuts,” and “dame” were banished. A toilet was never to be seen. Generations of young film goers learned that men and women, married or not, slept in separate beds.

The studios, borrowing the word from their baseball brethren, created the “Screwball Comedy,” films that would offer, in the words of film critic Andrew Sarris, “a sex comedy without the sex.” Hollywood enlisted the help of a number of old-time silents directors, Lewis Milstone (The Front Page), Ernst Lubitz (Ninotchka) and discovered new writers and directors, such as Frank Capra (It Happened One Night) who began as a silent movie gag writer for the Keystone studios, Leo McCarey (The Awful Truth), Howard Hawks (Twentieth Century) and most notably, that master of rapid-fire comic dialogue, Preston Sturges (The Lady Eve). Most of the major stars of the time appeared in the 200 or so screwball comedies that were made before World War II came along and our interests fell to other pressing matters. Two of the best were Carole Lombard (Nothing Sacred) and Irene Dunn (The Awful Truth) and the films unearthed a previously unsuspected talent for comedy from Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn (Bringing up Baby), Henry Fonda (Nothing Sacred), William Powell (My Man Godfrey), Joel McRae (The Palm Beach Story), and many others. The bleakness of life during the Great Depression gave Americans a need for escape, and these films gave it to them. The irreverent comedies sent up big business and small town life. They told us that marriage could be fun (The Thin Man). In the last reel, the values of polite society were inevitably reinforced but, up until then, the couple at the centre of the comic maelstrom nearly always had to overcome an initial dislike to pursue joint paths that

led to kidnapping, election campaigns, scandals, runaway leopards, collapsing dinosaur bones, amnesia, divorce, murder, (suspected) adultery, cross-dressing and impersonations. The plots were often driven by the ritualistic humiliation of one of the protagonists and featured beautiful people in unexpected and often embarrassing situations.
“I loved the terrific and fresh plot twists.
Unexpected and theatrical.”
A generation after screwball gave Hollywood a new lease on life, Tom Wood was a movie-struck kid growing up in Jasper Place. He was discovering the movies as his own personal “magic carpet ride.” Every Saturday afternoon he would, twenty-five cents in hand, go down to the Jasper Place Cinema. His favourites were Ray Harryhausen’s stop motion Sindbad fantasy films. In his early teens, his love of movies led him to discover screwball comedy. “The equality of the sexes appealed to me. The female character often called the shots – led the chase and made all the important decisions. I loved the terrific and fresh plot twists. Unexpected and theatrical.” He never forgot those “golden age” films and they returned to his mind about five years ago. “I had the idea that I wanted to write a play about how love, at least over the long haul, is only achieved by working at it. With that idea, I sifted around for a context in

which to plant it. To tell the truth, I stumbled around for a long time without quite knowing what or how to achieve the thing. I progressed in fits and starts and some of the directions I took were totally fruitless and I did a lot of tracking and reworking. I don’t believe there is a line in the play now that was there after the first year of work.”
“I had the idea that I wanted to write a play about how love, at least over the long haul, is only achieved by working at it.” This being Tom Wood, he of the resonant adaptations of A Christmas Carol, Vanya and Pride and Prejudice, the new work was not to be a simple recreation, or homage to, a favourite movie style. “Part of the fun is letting the audience in on the early stages of a group of characters at work in the filming of a screwball musical comedy. We see them watching the ‘dailies’ (the movie’s word for watching the film of the previous day’s shoot) and their lives turn into a film. Soon, we don’t know if we are in a film or in the real world. Make Mine Love is a ridiculously ambitious project for any theatre to take on. It demands the talents of real filmmaking crews with a knowledge of new and cutting edge projectors and digital operating skills.” Much of the filmmaking took place a month ago at Victoria School of the Arts by local (now relocated to Vancouver) film whiz Jordan Dowler Coltman – under the watchful eye of director Bob Baker. The crew used the fabled Red Epic camera, employed

by many spectacular Vegas and travelling rock shows (and by Peter Jackson in the making of the most recent Hobbit film). The camera is a technical wonder that has revolutionized the movies with its small size and incredible resolution. If the original movies used dream casts – the top actors and actresses of the ‘30’s, so too Tom and his partner, dramaturge, co-developer and director Bob Baker chose the best in local comic actors. The John Barrymore-like lead is John Ullyatt and his Carole Lombard-like partner is Rebecca Northan, the irrepressible clown, Mimi,of the Citadel’s cabaret hit Blind Date. Enthuses Wood, “The play will also feature Julien Arnold, who is an amazing character actor who can always make me howl with laughter but is never shallow. Mark Meer (of CBC Radio’s The Irrelevant Show) is astonishing as the several characters he will be playing.” (Others in the cast are such local farceurs as Jana O’Connor, Farren Timoteo and James MacDonald.) Says Wood, “It’s an embarrassment of riches.” The plot certainly comes across as your basic goofy screwball. It is the New York of 1938 and raffish matinee idol Hale Lane (Ullyatt) is on the lam from loan sharks. He leaps into a handy limo only to discover it belongs to his ex-wife Lily Arlen (Northan), now a major movie star and world class diva. During the ensuing chase, of course, their love rekindles. What follows is classic stuff – disguises, train travel, singing, dancing, mistaken identities, car chases, love found/love lost, bus rides, quirky characters and a dizzying series of plot twists. But despite all the screwball trapping and the technical wizardry, Wood promises his original dream of a play about the rigours needed to keep love alive. “I tried to never forget that under all that comedy, under the zany misunderstandings and twists and turns, there must be great loving, and beating hearts. Real pain, real longing, loneliness and a desperate desire for love and belonging.” Make Mine Love previews on the main stage of the Citadel on May 10th and runs through June 1st.

STAMINA, STRENGTH, AGILITY OF BODY, MIND, HEART
AT THE CITADEL, we do not just put on plays, we build theatre for today, tomorrow and
beyond. The Robbins Academy at the Citadel Theatre is the most comprehensive program for creative development in professional theatre in Canada. Offering programs for both emerging and established theatre professionals, the Robbins Academy encompasses five specialized programs under one unique umbrella:
THE CITADEL/BANFF CENTRE PROFESSIONAL THEATRE PROGRAM is now in its sixth year. This Program, conceived by Citadel Theatre Artistic Director Bob Baker, and under the direction of Program Director James MacDonald, provides performers a distinct alternative to other professional theatre training programs in North America. Our curriculum focuses on the development of advanced skills for professional actors and directors, properly equipping them with the necessary tools to pursue and sustain successful careers. We would like to acknowledge the generosity and vision of the original supporters of the Program: • The Eldon and Anne Foote Fund of the Edmonton Community Foundation • The John and Barbara Poole Family Fund • Canadian Western Bank and the Pechet Family The Citadel/Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program has continued to grow and thrive with the ongoing support of • The Eldon and Anne Foote Fund of the Edmonton Community Foundation with the stewardship of David Bentley • The RBC Foundation And the recent support of • Government of Alberta PLAY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM With the continued commitment to produce world premières on our stages, we offer resources and professional expertise to assist playwrights in developing their work to its greatest potential. Over the last decade the Citadel has developed and produced 18 World Premieres, 13 of which have been subsequently produced elsewhere, taking the name of the Citadel and Edmonton around the world. Our audiences have not only experienced the inaugural productions of these plays but have also had the unique opportunity to participate in their development. THE CITADEL THEATRE YOUNG COMPANIES is an advanced training and mentorship program for aspiring artists between the ages of 16-21 who are serious about pursuing post-secondary education and a career in theatre. This year-long program offers specialized training in Acting, Musical Theatre, Playwriting and Theatre Production. THE ELDON AND ANNE FOOTE THEATRE SCHOOL (FTS) is the oldest and largest theatre school in Edmonton. Since 1966 we have provided year round classes for all ages and experience levels, teaching physical, technical and creative skills in both acting and musical theatre. Over 1,000 students annually are taught by our faculty of 25 local theatre professionals.
