RIDE THE CYCLONE 19
Synopsis The long-awaited musical sequel to Legoland, from Victoria’s Atomic Vaudeville, Ride the Cyclone spotlights a teenage chamber choir from Uranium, Saskatchewan who died in a roller coaster accident at a traveling fair. Karnack, a mechanized fortune-telling machine, feels responsible for the young choir’s demise, and gives the teens a chance to express themselves to the world after death. Ride the Cyclone is their final recital, where they celebrate their individuality while coming to terms with their untimely demise.
History Ride the Cyclone was workshopped extensively for 3 years and premiered in Victoria at Intrepid Theatre’s Metro Studio for a two-week run in October of 2009. The production has toured to the Vernon Arts Centre in BC (November 2009) and was presented as part of the National Series at the Summerworks Festival in Toronto (Aug 2010). RTC was presented at the Belfry Theatre in Victoria in 2011, and subsequently went on tour to Vancouver, Whitehorse and Toronto.

Company Profile Atomic Vaudeville is composed of a collective of writers, performers and musicians supported by the leadership of Artistic Directors Jacob Richmond and Britt Small. The company’s mission is to redefine performance in their community by creating a living and modern theatre environment combining a variety of performance disciplines as well as stimulating dialogue with the audience by embracing the concerns and sensibilities of an undefined generation. We are a Victoria-based performance company that has produced new work locally, nationally and abroad. Atomic Vaudeville’s mandate is to encourage and support the professional development of new and emerging local actors, writers, musicians, artists and performers through: - An annual season of Atomic Vaudeville performances in Victoria; - The commissioning, development and public performance of plays and works by emerging local writers, composers and performing artists; - Sponsorship of and/or participation in Canadian and international festivals in order to showcase new, contemporary, local work. The company was founded by Small and Richmond in 2004 with the production of a monthly cabaret show that has become a beloved cult hit in Victoria BC. The shows are a short-form mélange of theatre, music, song, dance, puppetry and sketch; an adoption of the rough vaudeville form reconceived for the present age, which attracts an audience hungry for a live, entertaining and relevant theatrical art form. The show has won numerous local awards including the Monday Magazine “2008 Biggest Big Winner award” as chosen by the community. Since its inception, AV has produced over 60 cabaret shows in Victoria, Vancouver, Toronto, and Bellingham and worked with over 200 local and visiting artists. As well as the ongoing cabarets, AV has been producing an annual summer Sweatshop Festival since 2006 in Victoria. The multi-disciplinary festival showcases local and visiting artists in new and experimental short-form work with a mandate to create a condensed creative space for artists across various disciplines and communities to perform and interact. The ongoing cabaret and festival programming of the company both supports and is informed by the full production of more refined and developed work; work that has established a reputation of excellence for the company nationally. Atomic Vaudeville has produced the plays The Qualities of Zero, Legoland, Ride the Cyclone, The History of Everything, and Circus Fire in Toronto, Seattle, Bellingham, Prague, New York, Victoria and Vancouver. Atomic Vaudeville has also been commissioned to create new work for the Victoria Erotica Film and Arts Festival, the Monday Magazine Awards, the Victoria Art Gallery, the Luminara Festival, the Vancouver International Burlesque Festival and the BC Film Commission Conference. The company was incorporated as a non-profit company in January 2008.

“There is a way to be good again.” Hosseini’s sprawling tale, based loosely on his own childhood experiences in Afghanistan, tells of complex relationships and ordinary people trying to navigate a constantly shifting political landscape. It touches on themes of loyalty, betrayal, family and fate spinning an engrossing yarn of one man’s quest for redemption. Echoing Hosseini’s own life, it begins in Afghanistan, shifts to California and ends where it began. Set in the 1970’s in a peaceful Kabul, before the coming of the Russians, the Taliban and the Americans, the story begins with two boys. Amir is a well-to-do kid from a rich family and a member of the ruling Pashtun class. Hassan is the son of the family servant, and a Hazara – an inferior caste. Amir is a kite flyer – a favourite pastime of Afghan boys – and Hassan is his kite runner, who retrieves the kites in what is a highly aggressive competition. The two boys bond across class lines as only children can. One day Amir watches in horror as his best friend is brutalized by a local bully but does not help. This betrayal will haunt him all his life even when the family flees from the Soviets to a haven in California. But then, the phone rings and a voice on the other end tells him, “There is a way to be good again.” Amir returns to Afghanistan.

Hosseini’s best seller was being turned into a movie in 2007 about the same time that Matthew Spangler, a playwright, director and University professor located in the Bay area of San Francisco saw in the book, the basis of a dramatic stage journey of the human heart. Spangler specializes in adaptations, having turned stories by Hemingway, Cheever, Steinbeck, Wolfe and James Joyce into plays and dramatic presentations of all sorts. “And why not,” enthuses the lively voice on the other end of the phone. “I get to collaborate with some of the best writers of all time. I suppose one of the reasons I like adapting is that rather than writing about what you know – you write about what you don’t know. You use the process of research and writing as a way of getting to know something new.” Spangler is in Alberta for the premier of his play at Theatre Calgary, the co-production that will transfer to the Citadel to open on March 9.

“You have to be careful as an adaptor not to misrepresent something or that you are not taking something out that is really important to the culture or the politics of the story. ...” So, adapting The Kite Runner into a stage drama set Spangler off on an odyssey of his own. Never having been in Afghanistan, he realized that he was going to have to immerse himself in the culture. It took him 9 months before he committed word to paper. Luckily, there was a large expatriot community of Afghans in the area. Khaled had a father-in-law who lived nearby and the two would meet. “I would share the things I had been reading with him and he would give me an insider’s point of view on the history and various other things. He was a fantastic resource.” Hosseini’s large, event-filled book takes some 18 hours to read and, of course, a lot would have to be cut out. “You have to be careful as an adaptor not to misrepresent something or that you are not taking something out that is really important to the culture or the politics of the story. You have to approach it asking yourself, ‘Can I sacrifice this moment for the economy of storytelling or is it really important to an Afghan that the moment be told?’” Hosseini met with the playwright and went over

early drafts of the play. “He was very generous and kind and supportive of the project,” remembers the playwright. So supportive, in fact, that he said to the dramatist that many of the changes (Spangler) made to the material – the author would make in the book if he was writing it today. Spangler is quite adamant that Marc Forester’s film had nothing to do with his adaptation. It’s quite different. For one thing Spangler was able to use a technique not available to the filmmakers – given the differences in the two media. As in the book, he could concentrate on storytelling. Amir tells his own story. “A lot of powerful moments come when you hear Amir tell you why something is significant or the thoughts that went through his head at that particular moment.” And so the play becomes a very personal story – and the audience Amir’s confessor. “Had Amir not run from that alley (...where the attack occurred) he surely would have taken Hassan to the United States with him. Hassan is dead because of what Amir did. There can be no greater weight than that.” Spangler’s adaptation is a “memory play,” which assists in the complex staging. “Everything that takes place on the stage isn’t so much a representation of reality
“...Much of the story takes place in the mind of the audience.”

“...It’s a universal theme whether you’re an Afghan or Canadian or living in California. ...” but rather it is a representation of how Amir remembers things. Things can be represented in a symbolic or abstract way – as opposed to Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman where you feel like you’ve got to represent every detail of that kitchen. That kind of detail would work against the nature of the play. Much of the story takes place in the mind of the audience.” Times have changed since Hosseini wrote the original. Then, Afghanistan was a distant country of unending conflict, camels and nomadic tribes. But for a decade it has figured largely in world politics. “Ten years on, we know a lot about Afghanistan and I think that is why this story is still told and retold. At its base, it’s the story of two best friends who are separated because they come from different cultures. It’s a universal theme whether you’re an Afghan or Canadian or living in California. It is also about the family immigration experience – a very particular one, mind you – but all of us in North America are immigrants. The experience of travelling to a new country and acclimating to new rules – that is something many people are familiar with today. There’s a lot here for people to tap into.”
“...We’re hoping to publish the play and I want to make sure that every single line, every stage direction, is as good as it can be. ...” The show we will be seeing is its 8th production. Spangler has attended every one. For some it was just opening night – but for others it has entailed some rewriting. This is the first international performance and he places great importance on it. “I’ve been here for a week of rehearsals and I hope to come up to Edmonton for more. There are two things at work here. We’re hoping to publish the play and I want to make sure that every single line, every stage direction, is as good as it can be. The Kite Runner is not a boring play. Especially in the second act, there is something new happening every 3 or 4 minutes, which is kind of tricky to direct. If there’s a line that could be tweaked because of the way the director has staged a certain scene, it’s nice to have the playwright on hand. In fact,” he added cheerfully, “I emailed Eric (Eric Rose – the play’s director) four line changes just this morning.” Spangler has no ambition to write the great American novel. “It would be very depressing to write alone in an office for two or three years. The theatre is the most social of literary traditions. It puts you in a space with all these other creative people and your play constantly changes as a result of their input. Many times actors come to me to say they don’t understand how a speech works. That
32 RIDE THE CYCLONE
“...I find the whole theatre process really exhilarating.” leaves me two options. Either I can guide the actor through it and maybe a light goes off. Or, perhaps I haven’t written the line as well as I might have. I find the whole theatre process really exhilarating.”
