SENSE AND SENSIBILITY Adapted by Tom Wood Based on the novel by Jane Austen Apr 22 – May 14, 2017

Welcome to Sense and Sensibility! World Premieres are so exciting – being the first audience to get to experience a new work is such a thrill. And this World Premiere production is the perfect example! Tom Wood has written a sumptuous and crackling stage adaptation of Jane Austen’s literary masterpiece. Bob Baker has directed the production with his trademark rigour and invention. The production stars the participants of the Citadel/ Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program, who have been working and training together for months. It is a truly special occasion, and we get to be the first lucky audiences to experience it! I got to spend a few days in Banff during this year’s training, and it was incredibly eyeopening. I got to see what a spectacular opportunity it is for professional actors to train with some of the finest teachers in the country, to see how the company forms such tight bonds, and how their work becomes so much deeper and richer. I’m certain you’ll feel it in the calibre of the work you see on our stage in this performance. With this, our final production of our 2016/17 season, we wrap up this incredible season of shows programmed by Bob Baker. And what a spectacular season it has been, with highlights like the Canadian Premiere of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, our held-over production of Million Dollar Quartet and the razzle-dazzle of the incredible Crazy for You®! My thanks to Bob for the beautiful season he chose, and to the entire Citadel staff for bringing these fantastic productions to life. And now, we head into our 2017/18 Season – my first season of programming for the Citadel. The season is packed with more great premieres, including the Canadian Premiere of the Broadway-bound musical, Hadestown, and the World Premiere of the aerial arts infused adventure story, The Silver Arrow: The Untold Story of Robin Hood. I can’t wait to share all of the incredible productions with you – I hope you’ll join us for the entire season! Sincerely,

Daryl Cloran, Artistic Director 4 CITADEL THEATRE 2016/17 SEASON

We hope you have thoroughly enjoyed the abundance of wonderful theatre created for you this season. So many fabulous experiences, so many shared moments, so many joyful memories. That’s the effect of great theatre! On behalf of all of us at the Citadel Theatre, we want to thank you for attending, for sharing your excitement through word of mouth and social media, for donating generously, and for sponsoring our productions and programs. We also whole-heartedly thank our artists, production teams, management, staff, volunteers and Board for their hard work and commitment to bringing great theatre to life in Edmonton. We are keenly aware that our environment is shifting and changing around us, demanding that we think differently, boldly and creatively about our programming, our relationship to our audiences, our donors and our community as a whole. We’re excited about our future and grateful to have your ongoing attendance, support, loyalty and commitment to the arts in Edmonton. The 2016/17 Season, the last to be programmed by Bob Baker, launched the Citadel boldly into its next 50 years. The 2017/18 Season, programmed by our new Artistic Director, Daryl Cloran, is a powerful and exciting celebration of our shared humanity “from all sides of the globe to our own backyard.” We can’t wait to share it with you. See you in September! With our deepest gratitude,

Penny Ritco, Executive Director 6 CITADEL THEATRE 2016/17 SEASON

Students Club

The Citadel Theatre believes that young people are integral to the artistic fabric of our community and we are committed to programming and initiatives that develop their creative voices and encourage their participation. The Maclab Students Club offers a unique glimpse into the world of professional theatre to a wide range of local junior and senior high school students. Prior to select performances of each of our main stage shows, Students Club members gather for a light supper and then participate in a highly engaging, interactive presentation with one of our region’s talented theatre artists. Following the performance, students stay for an informative talkback with members of the production’s cast and crew. Prior to performances of Sense and Sensibility, students enjoyed an interactive workshop on classical acting with Ben Stevens from Thou Art Here Theatre, an actor born and raised in Edmonton. Ben has recently been seen in Stupid F@#cking Bird (Edmonton Actor’s Theatre), Anxiety (Theatre Yes), Much Ado About Nothing (Thou Art Here), Never Swim Alone (Blarney Productions), For the Love of Cynthia (Teatro la Quindicina) and Gordon (Theatre Network). As a performer and playwright, Ben is an active creator of new works, including Emily Etterson’s Economical Eco-friendly Water Service (For Charity!) (Two Little Theatre/SKAMpede), The Van (Found Festival), Brake, Home Video Ben Stevens (Heartmeat), Herbert and If I Had a Horse (Ben, Dave, Steve). Ben is an Artistic Associate with Thou Art Here Theatre, Edmonton’s site-sympathetic Shakespeare company, with whom he has performed three full-length, found-space productions of Shakespeare’s work. Through the workshop, the students performed a short excerpt of classical text and were coached to a performance rich with meaning. They learned the basics of developing and exploring classical text and how essential context is to telling a story. They now better understand how to interpret a script while maintaining the integrity of the playwright’s story.

AT THE CITADEL, we do not just put on plays, we build theatre for today, tomorrow and

beyond. The Academy at the Citadel Theatre is the most comprehensive program for creative development in professional theatre in Canada. Offering programs for both emerging and established theatre professionals, The Academy encompasses four specialized programs under one unique umbrella: THE CITADEL/BANFF CENTRE PROFESSIONAL THEATRE PROGRAM is now in its ninth year. This Program, conceived by Citadel Theatre Artistic Director Emeritus Bob Baker, provides performers a distinct alternative to other professional theatre training programs in North America. Our curriculum focuses on the development of advanced skills for professional actors and directors, properly equipping them with the necessary tools to pursue and sustain successful careers.

The Citadel/Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program has continued to grow and thrive with the ongoing support of • The Eldon and Anne Foote Fund of the Edmonton Community Foundation with the stewardship of David Bentley • The RBC Foundation We would also like to acknowledge the generosity and vision of the original champions of the Program • The Eldon and Anne Foote Fund of the Edmonton Community Foundation • The John and Barbara Poole Family Fund • Canadian Western Bank and the Pechet Family And subsequent support from • Government of Alberta PLAY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM With the continued commitment to produce world premieres on our stages, we offer resources and professional expertise to assist playwrights in developing their work to its greatest potential. Over the last decade the Citadel has developed and produced 20 World Premieres, 14 of which have been subsequently produced elsewhere, taking the name of the Citadel and Edmonton around the world. Our audiences have not only experienced the inaugural productions of these plays but have also had the unique opportunity to participate in their development. We would like to thank BMO Financial Group for their ongoing support of the Citadel’s play development program. THE CITADEL THEATRE YOUNG COMPANIES is an advanced training and mentorship program for aspiring artists between the ages of 16-21 who are serious about pursuing post-secondary education and a career in theatre. This year-long program offers specialized training in Acting, Musical Theatre, Playwriting and Theatre Production. We would like to thank TD Canada Trust for their ongoing support of the Citadel’s Young Companies program. THE ELDON AND ANNE FOOTE THEATRE SCHOOL (FTS) is the oldest and largest theatre school in Edmonton. Since 1966, we have provided year-round classes for all ages and experience levels, teaching physical, technical and creative skills in both acting and musical theatre. At 42, Cloran is a compact, buoyant and focused force at the helm. His enthusiasm (and lively sense of humour) is infectious as he talks about his new season. His love of theatre is obvious in his breathless descant on his proposed cycle of shows. He also demonstrates a canny understanding of the seduction of commercial theatre combined with a clutch of productions that (he hopes) will challenge as well as entertain. His choice also shows the influence of a long career in theatrical trenches as well as management (for the past six years he was Artistic Director of the Western Canada Theatre in Kamloops). The Citadel’s official release calls the season “Heaven, Hell & All Stops in Between.” Cloran’s guiding vision is summed up in his three-word affirmative promise: “Inclusive, Innovative and International.” The season bounds onto the stage with a full blown hit, Shakespeare in Love. The inspiration for the play, of course, was the Oscar winning movie of the same name (written by Tom Stoppard and Marc Norman). The play was a hit in 2014 in London and enjoyed a recent highly successful run in Stratford, Ontario. Shakespeare in Love is really a romantic comedy in which the young Shakespeare finds himself falling in love with the courtly Viola de Lesseps, who has disguised herself as a boy-player in a local company. The production shows that nothing much changes in theatre and, for all that, in matters of the heart. Cloran, who will direct this co-production with the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, will be giving us a chance

to see what he is capable of with an opulent show that plays to the strengths of his theatre. Opening September 16. The next production demonstrates that the Artistic Director is a creature of patience and determination. Last summer, he was in New York scoping out new shows when he was enchanted by an offBroadway production called Hadestown, based on the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. In the tale, Orpheus journeys to the underworld to rescue his wife Eurydice. Hadestown (which looks and sounds a lot like New Orleans), with fresh and inventive staging by emerging wunderkind Rachel Chavkin, was obviously on a path to Broadway. Cloran approached the producers with the idea that, since they were considering out-of-town tryouts anyway, why not consider the Citadel? “The producers laughed and laughed,” he remembers. Cloran persisted. He sent them pictures and clips from the Citadel’s spectacular Evangeline, Ted Dykstra’s pop/opera based on the famous poem. “I sent other examples of what we were capable of — the kind of work we did here. I tried to give them some idea of my background in developing new plays.” His efforts paid off — the producers relented and Chavkin and company will pack up their stuff and travel to

Edmonton for a tryout that will open on November 11. The cast will be Canadian — at Cloran’s demand. “No guarantee they will be going with the show to Broadway,” he enthuses, “But I’ll bet she falls in love with at least one of them.”

FEB 17 - MAR 18/18

“The Humans is for people that love a smart, well-written contemporary drama,” says Cloran of the January 6 production. The show will be helmed by the distinguished former Artistic Director of the Shaw Festival, Jackie Maxwell. There is something of completing the circle in Cloran’s hiring of Maxwell. “I was just a young upstart at the time (2003) but she had the faith to hire me to direct my first big-time show as part of her own first season in Niagara-on-the-Lake.” The Humans is a sad/funny look at the dysfunction and ultimate mutual accommodation of a working class American family. On February 17, the Citadel trots out all the whistles and bells of that unquenchable audience favourite, Mamma Mia! The jukebox musical opened in London in 1999 and became a phenomenon. We can’t seem to get enough of it as the recent sold-out houses for the show at the Jube will attest. Cloran promises a new Citadel approach to the now venerable show, and given the theatre’s deserved reputation for re-inventing older

musicals, Mamma Mia! (on the thrust stage of the Maclab) should certainly chase away the February blahs. Cloran is determined to raise the profile of Indigenous people at the Citadel. And that is not just a utopian ideal but a solid commitment. Already the theatre has acquired the services of Edmonton’s Christine Frederick as the first Indigenous Associate Artist. Children of God is an original musical based on the fictional lives of two young Indigenous siblings in a residential school. The show is the creation of the impressively talented Indigenous playwright/musician/actor/director Corey Payette, who is proudly of Oji-Cree heritage. The show is featured in the current season of the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. Cloran’s fingerprints are all over this one as he presented it as a workshop production during his years in Kamloops. The show will be mounted on the Citadel Mainstage, opening March 3. Robin Hood and his Merry Men are about to take to the forest of Sherwood once again. Anyone who has seen the definitive 1938 Errol Flynn movie knows that they also take to the tops of trees, descending on the Sheriff’s evil minions from above. Perhaps that explains why Edmonton writer Mieko Ouchi and director (the very busy Cloran) have

chosen to put the dashing robbers aloft. They are enlisting Edmonton Firefly Theatre’s Annie Dugan to design aerial choreography for The Silver Arrow: The Untold Story of Robin Hood. (One of Dugan’s students was predominately featured in the last Cirque du Soleil to play here). A quick look at Cloran’s past directing career shows that he is adept at physical theatre and the show should be an adventurous delight. Oh, and did I mention that Robin is a woman? Those are the main season presentations but there’s more. Consider the add-ons:

APR 4 - 29/18

Ubuntu (The Cape Town Project) is another show that Cloran had a major hand in developing. Critics found the director’s early career-making Theatrefront production “electrifying” and “dynamic.” It features a blend of music, movement, dialogue (some in Xhosa) and meditations on love, loss and the powerful pull of family, as a young Canadian woman begins to unravel the legacy of her mother when she meets a young South African searching for his father. The work is the result of a four-year collaboration between Theatrefront and actors from Cape Town’s Baxter Theatre Centre and ranges from past to present — from Canada to South Africa. In the words of the director, “It is about our interconnectedness with one another — whether next door or across the ocean.” Follow the sound of pulsating drums to Ubuntu, opening October 11. Tetsuro Shigematsu is a fascinating fellow. For one thing, he speaks English, French, Japanese and Persian. You may remember him as the last host of CBC radio’s The Round-up. A practitioner of theatre in many of its forms, he has written a quicksilver autobiographical one-man show for himself and has played it with great success across the country. Called Empire of the Son, it is about a first-generation Canadian’s highly-charged relationship with his immigrant father. Shigematsu takes a familiar tale — that of the artistic son who has to come to terms with his cantankerous father’s intractable attitudes, and puts his own unique spin on it. Opens January 31. The clown Mimi is back. Well, maybe not Mimi herself but the unsinkable Rebecca Northan, who played her with heartbreaking humour and panache, returns with another improv show. In Blind Date, Northan exhibited a hair-raising ability to venture way out there at the edge of improv and keep audiences laughing with one of the sharpest wits in Canadian showbusiness. This time out, she invites an audience member to join her in deep Sam Spade territory as a rookie assistant detective as she, her volunteer gumshoe and a cast of six, solve a mystery. Go Undercover with Rebecca Northan April 4. As ol’ Sam himself muttered, “The stuff of dreams.” And yes, for the 18th year, Scrooge and Company will return in Tom Wood’s enduring adaptation of A Christmas Carol – December 1. Enjoy!
