message from the

Artistic Director Welcome to my first season of programming as Artistic Director of the Citadel. I am so happy to have

you here, and to share with you these fantastic productions. In South Africa, ubuntu refers to the interconnectedness of all humans and the belief that I am because you are. The spirit of ubuntu is at the heart of all the programming choices I made for this season. The productions all explore our intricate ties to one another, connecting us across the globe and in our own backyards. It is a season of stories that celebrate our shared humanity. And, as a proud new resident of Edmonton, it feels like the perfect way to start our relationship together. I hope you’ll join us for the whole season! Sincerely,

Daryl Cloran, Artistic Director

We wish to acknowledge that the land on which we gather is Treaty No. 6 territory and a traditional meeting ground and home of the First Nations, including both the treaty signatories – Cree, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Stony and Cree-Iroquois – as well as other Indigenous peoples, such as the Blackfoot and Métis, who occupied this land. We extend our appreciation for the opportunity to live, create and perform on this territory. Students Club The Citadel Theatre believes that young people are integral to the artistic fabric of our community and we are committed to programming and initiatives that develop their creative voices and encourage their participation. The Maclab Students Club offers a unique glimpse into the world of professional theatre to a wide range of local junior and senior high school students. Prior to select performances of each of our Mainstage shows, Students Club members gather for a light supper and then participate in a highly engaging, interactive presentation with one of our region’s talented theatre artists, covering some aspect of theatre – from choreography to design, from stage combat to Shakespeare. Following the performance, students stay for an informative talkback with members of the production’s cast and crew. Prior to performances of Shakespeare in Love, students enjoyed an interactive workshop on dialects with Doug Mertz, the production’s dialect coach, who is also an actor, director, teacher, and arts administrator. Doug has taught and coached dialects extensively in the U.S. and Canada, and currently serves as Director of Education and Outreach for the Citadel Theatre. Through the workshop, the students learned a basic approach for studying dialects and how dialects are tools used by the actors to help convey character, class, and geography. Doug Mertz

HENSLOWE: Let me explain about the theatre business. The natural condition is one of insurmountable obstacles on the road to imminent disaster… But it always works out in the end. FENNYMAN: How? HENSLOWE: I don’t know. It’s a mystery. I have been drawn to theatre all my life because of its collaborative nature. So many other art forms are solitary – a novelist sitting alone at her computer, a painter alone at his canvas – but theatre is built by a community of artists coming together and imagining the impossible. And somehow, no matter how big the obstacle, by opening night it all magically comes together. While Shakespeare in Love is a beautiful love story, it is also the story of an ensemble of actors and outcasts coming together to defy all odds and create something beautiful. They break the rules, and reimagine who is allowed to participate in the storytelling, and the story becomes richer for it. And tonight, we too, have come together with the very same intention, to create something beautiful for you. You are an integral part of that. Without you in the audience, there would be no production. We are creating this together. That’s the profound thing about theatre – we all come together in a space, for a moment, to create something that will never be exactly the same. It is ephemeral and magical. And it is why I keep coming back. This is the first production I have directed at the Citadel. I am so excited to be sharing this story with you, and I look forward to sharing many more magical experiences with you in the future. Enjoy the show! Sincerely,

Daryl Cloran, Artistic Director

Remembering a

Long-Time Friend One of the Citadel Theatre’s most important patrons and benefactors, Sandy Mactaggart, passed away in July. Sandy

was a founding member of the Citadel Theatre in 1965. He served on the original Board of Directors and was a member of the Board of Governors for many years. Maclab Enterprises, which he founded with Jean de La Bruyère, has been a major supporter of the Citadel’s growth and programming ever since. We are forever grateful for Sandy’s commitment to this theatre and will always remember his twinkling eyes and words of encouragement.

Although Artistic Director Daryl Cloran can no longer be regarded as the new guy at the helm of the Citadel, his theatrical smarts are obvious in all of the selections. Since announcing his slate of shows last February, they have met with universal acclaim. All that remains now is their artistic realization and (hopefully) audience acceptance. The season is the embodiment of Cloran’s philosophy that (as he told an audience recently in a Tedx Talk): “There never was a time when we needed theatre more. Theatre is necessary. Theatre is relevant. It is the sharing of stories and cultures. It is Ubuntu.” In fact, Ubuntu is the title of the next work coming up as a season Add-On. Ubuntu is a word of Bantu origin and literally means “a person is a person through other people” meaning that all humanity is a single community. Ubuntu is not a new show but is a dramatic illustration of Cloran’s drive to reach out to other cultures and present them, dramatically, on his stages. Cloran tells a great story about the production. “I took a group of Canadian actors to South Africa to work with a group of local actors (Cape Town’s Baxter Theatre Centre). I wanted to see what kind of show could be made by putting together two different groups with different artistic beliefs and languages. I said, ‘OK! Now we’re going to start this scene,’ and the Canadian actors dutifully took out their pens and papers, sat down and prepared to write. The South African performers leapt up and started to dance. The Canadians looked at me and said, ‘Are...? Are we...? Ah! Well, I guess we’re gonna dance.’ And they started to dance. That was the exact moment when we started to find a language because we ultimately spoke different languages, both artistically and literally.”

“As I watched I thought, ‘We could have done Hamlet. We could have picked a show where the script was already written. But the goal was to build something truly unique. And we did. We created a show about our shared responsibility to one another on both sides of the ocean.” The process took four years and when Ubuntu: The Cape Town Project opened in 2009 in Toronto’s Tarragon theatre, it caused a great deal of comment and impressive audience reaction. The critics called the show “electrifying” and “dynamic.” It also proved to be a career maker for the new director and possibly one of the reasons that he is here at the Citadel. Ubuntu features a blend of music, movement, dialogue (some of it in Xhosa – the unique Nguni Bantu language where the consonants are sounded as clicks) and is a meditation on love, loss, and the powerful pull of family as a young Canadian woman begins to unravel the legacy of her mother when she meets a young South African searching for his father. Follow the sound of pulsating drums to Ubuntu – previewing on October 11 on the thrust stage of the Maclab Theatre.

The next production demonstrates that Cloran, as Artistic Director, is a creature of determination. A year ago, he was in New York scoping out new shows, when he was enchanted by an Off-Broadway production called Hadestown, based on the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. In the tale, Orpheus journeys to the underworld to rescue his wife, Eurydice. Hadestown (which looks and sounds a lot like New Orleans), with fresh and inventive staging by emerging wunderkind Rachel Chavkin, was obviously on a path to Broadway. Cloran approached the producers with the idea that, since they were considering out-of-town tryouts anyway, why not consider the Citadel? Cloran persisted. “I sent them examples of what we were capable of – the kind of work we did here. I tried to give them some idea of my background in developing new plays.” His efforts paid off and Chavkin and company will pack up their stuff and travel to Edmonton for a tryout that will begin on November 11. The cast will feature many Canadian performers. “No guarantee they will be going with the show to Broadway,” he enthuses, “but I’ll bet she falls in love with at least one of them.” “The Humans is for people that love a smart, well-written contemporary drama,” says Cloran of the January production. The show will be helmed by the distinguished former Artistic Director of the Shaw Festival, Jackie

Maxwell. There is something of completing the circle in Cloran’s hiring of Maxwell. “I was just a young upstart at the time (2003) but she had the faith to hire me to direct my first big-time show as part of her own first season in Niagara-on-the-Lake.” The Humans is a sad/funny look at the dysfunction and ultimate mutual accommodation of a working class American family. On February 17, the Citadel trots out all the whistles and bells of that unquenchable audience favourite, Mamma Mia!. The jukebox musical opened in London in 1999 and became a phenomenon. We can’t seem to get enough of it, as the recent sold-out houses for the show at the Jube will attest. Cloran promises a new Citadel approach to the now venerable show, and given the theatre’s deserved reputation for re-inventing older musicals, Mamma Mia! (on the thrust stage of the Maclab) should certainly chase away the February blahs.

recent season of the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. Cloran presented it during his six years as Artistic Director of the Western Canada Theatre in Kamloops as a workshop production. The show will be mounted on the Citadel Mainstage, previewing March 3. Robin Hood is about to take to the forest of Sherwood once again. Anyone who has seen the definitive 1938 Errol Flynn movie knows that they also take to the tops of trees, descending on the Sheriff’s evil minions from above. Perhaps that explains why Edmonton writer Mieko Ouchi and director (the very busy Cloran) have chosen to put the dashing robbers aloft. They are enlisting Edmonton Firefly Theatre & Circus’ Annie Dugan to design aerial choreography for The Silver Arrow: The Untold Story of Robin Hood. A quick look at Cloran’s past directing career shows that he is adept at physical theatre and the show should be an adventurous delight. Returning to the Add-Ons: APR 21 - MAY 13/18

Tetsuro Shigematsu is a fascinating fellow. For one thing, he speaks English, French, Japanese, and Persian. A practitioner of theatre in many of its forms, he has written a quicksilver autobiographical one-man show for himself and has played it with great success across the country. Called Empire of the Son, it is about a first-generation Canadian’s highly-charged relationship with his immigrant father. Shigematsu takes a familiar tale – that of the artistic son who has to come to terms with his cantankerous father’s intractable attitudes, and puts his own unique spin on it. Previews January 31.

JAN 31 - FEB 18/18

The clown Mimi is back. Well, maybe not Mimi herself but the unsinkable Rebecca Northan, who played her with heartbreaking humour and panache, returns with another improv show. In Blind Date, Northan exhibited a hair-raising ability to venture way out there at the edge of improv and keep audiences laughing with one of the sharpest wits in Canadian showbusiness. This time out, she invites an audience member to join her in deep Sam Spade territory as a rookie assistant detective as she, her volunteer gumshoe (you), and a cast of six solve a mystery. Go Undercover with Rebecca Northan April 4. As ol’ Sam himself muttered: “The stuff of dreams.”
