THE SILVER ARROW:
THE UNTOLD STORY OF ROBIN HOOD By Mieko Ouchi Apr 21 – May 13, 2018
message from the
Artistic Director Welcome to The Silver Arrow! When I first arrived in Edmonton, I asked Mieko if she’d be interested in reimagining an adventure story for the Citadel stage. Mieko’s “reboot” of the Robin Hood legend is thrilling. She has reinvented the story in such an innovative and inclusive way. It has been so inspiring to collaborate with Annie Dugan of Edmonton’s own Firefly Theatre & Circus as she leads our cast through astounding aerial acts. And Hawksley Workman has composed such an incredible score for this production. Drew Facey’s awesome steampunk set and costumes, Leigh Ann Vardy’s fabulous lighting, Owen Hutchinson’s immersive sound design, Jonathan Hawley Purvis’ exciting fights — there are so many incredible artists involved in bringing this ambitious World Premiere to life!
This production features the participants in this year’s Citadel/Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program. Fourteen artists trained at the Banff Centre for four weeks, before coming to Edmonton to start rehearsals for this production. The training is led by some of the finest theatre practitioners in Canada and includes everything from voice and text to scene study to stage combat, and this year, even aerial arts! Our immense thanks to President & CEO Janice Price, and all of our colleagues at the Banff Centre for this incredible partnership. Rehearsals for this production have been exhilarating — at any given moment we have had performers rehearsing scenes in one room, while others are learning music in another, while others are practicing aerial moves in the theatre, while others are doing stage combat in the hallways. This story has spilled out into every corner of the building. And now we have packed it all into this theatre for you! Thanks so much for joining us for this high-flying adventure!
Daryl Cloran, Artistic Director

EXECUTIVE Director AND BOARD PRESIDENT What a delightful whirlwind this season has been!
We were rocked by the power of Hadestown, dancing in the aisles at Mamma Mia! and moved by Children of God – just a few of the highlights in a season that delivered on our Artistic Director Daryl Cloran’s promise of theatre that is Innovative, Inclusive and International. Our season has been a success because of all of you, our patrons. Whether you are experiencing the Citadel for the first time or are a long-time subscriber, you become part of the conversation. It may be in our lobby, with our artists, over coffee or on social media, but that’s what live theatre does, it generates conversations, reactions, questions, and sometimes even answers. What happens on our stages is a result of the generous support of our donors and sponsors who invest in our art and our programs and believe in the value of theatre to our community. Thank you for your commitment to Edmonton and to the Citadel family! Each performance is a culmination of the efforts of not only our talented performing artists but also our hardworking production teams, tradespeople, technicians, professional staff, management and volunteers. We are blessed to have such a passionate and skilled team supporting all the magic that happens in our theatres. As we move toward next season you will see the magic continue — not only with the amazing shows we have in store, but with a focus on new, innovative and interactive ways for you to be a part of the experience. We are busy planning this, and a lot more, as we work together to realize an ambitious future for the Citadel! Chantell & Wendy

Students Club The Citadel Theatre believes that young people are integral to the artistic fabric of our community and we are committed to programming and initiatives that develop their creative voices and encourage their participation. The Maclab Students Club offers a unique glimpse into the world of professional theatre to a wide range of local junior and senior high school students. Prior to select performances of each of our Mainstage shows, Students Club members gather for a light supper and then participate in a highly engaging, interactive presentation with one of our region’s talented theatre artists, covering some aspect of theatre – from choreography to design, from stage combat to Shakespeare. Following the performance, students stay for an informative talkback with members of the production’s cast and crew. Prior to select performances of The Silver Arrow, students enjoyed an interactive workshop on physical theatre with Artists from Firefly Theatre, hosted by Neil Kuefler, Education Outreach Associate here at the Citadel. Firefly Theatre creates original live performances on the ground and in the air inside theatres, museums, conventions centres and nightclubs and outside in squares and intersections, and in the air suspended from buildings. Their fusion of circus and theatre has given Firefly a unique voice in the Canadian performing arts landscape. Through this workshop, students learned some of the basics that go into the company’s performance style. They now better understand how physicality is used to tell stories in theatre.

As artistic director for one of Canada’s premier companies, Cloran has many responsibilities but they all boil down to two requirements — a season must be artistically satisfying and there’s not much use in producing art if no one shows up to see it. In other words, it’s the old “bums in the seats” argument. To address the artistic element, any look at a season that started off with a classy, warm and inviting production (that Cloran directed) of Shakespeare in Love and extending across such dramatic highs as The Humans, Ubuntu, and Hadestown to tonight’s adventurous The Silver Arrow, discerning theatregoers can only applaud the edgy, inclusive year just past. Observes Cloran, “One of the things I’ve learned in the past year is that Citadel audiences want theatre that demands challenge. I’ve tried to do that and so far they are responding enthusiastically.” It’s there on the balance sheet. Says Cloran simply, “We are globally above our subscription targets this year!” What that means, in these tough times where the major Canadian theatres are in crisis, seeing their audience subscriptions sadly decline with succeeding cut backs in production, the Citadel is programming resolutely forward. “Hadestown (the Broadway-bound Citadel produced smash) sold almost double our target.” There was a bit of a rumble when Mamma Mia! was announced — the worry being the venerable vehicle had certainly been around the block in Edmonton. But the theatre’s energetic re-invention of the show found a ready audience. “Tickets for the show sold like

crazy,” says the delighted Cloran. Ubuntu, which was a Canadian/African production near to the heart of Cloran because he was one of the original creators of the drama/movement construct, was “something new for the city and there was a great response. Through phone calls, emails and letters audiences said, ‘I’ve never seen anything like that before and I can’t wait to see more of it.’ Ubuntu was the sort of play that got people introduced to something new. It was nice to see something like that pay off.” So Cloran has launched what he calls his “Re-imagine” Season. “This year I’m coming at the plays and characters from different ways than we’ve seen them before. I want to feature those whose voices have been underrepresented on Canadian stages.” Like Matilda. There’s a song in the upcoming stage musical based on the 1988 Roald Dahl children’s novel in which a precocious five-year-old girl with the gift of telekinesis overcomes a disengaged family and imperious school system to reclaim her life. Sings the cheeky kid, “Nobody But Me Is Going To Change My Story,” providing a sort of theme song for Cloran’s season. “If a five-year-old tyke can stand up and make a difference — so the season is partly about people who re-imagine what their place in the world will be.” You could call the Broadway and West End hit heartwarming and it certainly has reduced many an audience member to tears (Cloran himself admits to a bit of waterworks action both times he has seen it). But since the original children’s book was written by Dahl (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory/James and the Giant Peach) you can be sure that it will feature the

author’s unsentimental, macabre, darkly comic proclivities making it a grand entertainment for both children and adults.
FEB 16 - MAR 17, 2019
The season will begin on September 22 with Once. “No,” chuckles Cloran. “I won’t be buying you a drink, but we are going to have a big bar set up in the lobby turning it into one big working Irish pub.” Once started off as a modest 2007 musical film by John Carney. When it opened as a stage musical in 2011, little was expected of it. But much like Come From Away, the Newfoundland musical of a few years later, its warmth, catchy music and come-from-the-streets charm found an audience that led to a Broadway production and eight Tony nominations — a win as Outstanding Musical and the 2013 Grammy for Best Album. One song, “Falling Slowly,” won the Oscar. The plot is a soulful, resonant tale of a burned-out singer/ songwriter who has his dream reimagined (that word again) by a resolute Czechoslovakian girl who has grown to love his music. It’s going to be tough to cast the show because all 12 cast members must also be cracker-jack musicians. When not performing solo, they become a band – never leaving the stage. You know, like an Irish pub.

Redpatch, the season’s second offering, is set in World War One where a young Métis soldier is caught between two worlds. He’s not particularly welcome as a soldier and longs for his homeland and family. The drama will feature six Indigenous actors and will be told (in the physical kind of theatre so near to Cloran’s heart) with movement-based storytelling and dance. This is the time of Lauren Gunderson. In 2016, Ms. Gunderson was the most produced living playwright in America. The playwright loves Jane Austen and, looking at the enthusiasm generated by the recent Bob Baker/Tom Wood productions of Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility, so do Citadel theatre-goers. A couple of years back, Gunderson (along with Margot Melcon) wrote a winning and witty sequel to Pride and Prejudice called Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley. The central concept finds Mary, whom you may remember was a minor character — the bookish middle child in the Bennet family. Apparently, the overlooked Mary coped with many of the same societal and personal problems faced by her more famous sister.

For Sweat, the powerful Pulitzer Prize winning drama by Lynn Nottage, the playwright spent many months interviewing residents of the dying rust belt towns of Pennsylvania. The result was a rippedfrom-the-headlines view of what has come to be regarded as Donald Trump’s America — although the play is far more personal than political. “Smart, strong, contemporary storytelling,” observes Cloran with hopes of another hit of the proportions of the unexpected success of this year’s The Humans. jan 12 - feb 3, 2019
mar 30 - apr 21, 2019
The next two (actually three) shows of the season demonstrate Cloran’s obsession for pushing at the bounds of dramatic storytelling — and the physical presence of his theatre. One of the things he told this column last year just after taking over the Citadel, is that he kept getting lost in the many rooms, hallways and dark corners of the building. “I took to thinking we should take advantage of all those spaces.” Not one to let a good idea languish, he approached the current hot Canadian playwright, Kat Sandler, and she came up with a concept: two plays with the same characters, set in different times but staged at the same time. The Party, in The Club, will be an actual immersive party — a comic fundraiser for a forthcoming election. Staged at the same time in the Maclab is The Candidate, a “full-out door-slamming farce” in which a scandal erupts the night of the election itself. To complicate matters, Edmonton’s inventive Theatre Yes, known for staging shows anywhere but on a stage, will be using various nooks, crannies and venues throughout the theatre complex for a show of their own. Beware the lobby of the Citadel those nights, as actors (probably changing costumes as they go) literally run from one venue to the other. Crash helmets may be necessary.
apr 20 - may 12, 2019
The season ends with another theatre-expanding concept. Impressed by seeing a number of Deaf theatre companies, Cloran will enlist the participants of the Citadel/Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program and using the abilities of Josette Bushell-Mingo, the artistic director of Sweden’s National Deaf Theatre, will mount a production of Shakespeare’s The Tempest. The desert island drama features some of Shakespeare’s most lyrical poetry but the daring concept, which is still in the process of working its way out, sounds fascinating. Cloran insists it will be much more than just signing at the corner of the stage but a fully integrated staging using the talents of both worlds. (Prospero’s daughter, Miranda, will be Deaf!) Re-imagining indeed. And, yes, A Christmas Carol will be back for its 19th season. No re-imagining needed here.

Beyond the Stage
Dave Mowat • President & CEO, ATB Financial Why does ATB support the arts? Because artists draw. Compose. Paint. Dance. Write. They shape, show and mix. They challenge. They judge. They aim. They stay true. They know what it’s like to be alone. They bring us together. Their spirit of creativity and fearlessness makes Alberta, and the world around us, a better place. And that is worth supporting, year after year after year.
