Message From The
ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Welcome to Six! This musical is a phenomenon! We are so lucky to have this incredible production here at the Citadel, and so proud that Edmonton is a step on this show’s meteoric path to Broadway! Six is an incredible success story. Starting as a University project, then playing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the production was picked up for an incredibly successful run in London’s West End. And this year the production has made its North American debut at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater, Boston’s American Repertory Theater, and now at The Citadel! (The only theatre in Canada where you can see Six!) After Edmonton, the production travels to St. Paul, Minneapolis, and then opens on Broadway.
Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss have created an exhilarating and empowering story with absolutely infectious music (which has already had over 50 million streams online!) We are proud to welcome this incredible cast of Queens to the Citadel en route to Broadway (including Winnipeg’s own Andrea Macasaet!). And thanks very much to you, our audience, for supporting live theatre in Edmonton. In the new year, with both Hadestown and Six playing in New York, Citadel audiences can proudly say, “We saw it first in Edmonton!” for two of Broadway’s most popular productions! Sincerely,
Daryl Cloran, Artistic Director
PS – It’s our 20th anniversary of A Christmas Carol, and this year to celebrate, we’re premiering a brand new adaptation written by Edmonton’s own David van Belle, and starring St. Albert-born Ted Dykstra as Scrooge! We hope you’ll join us for this magical new production of the story you know and love, filled with music (a live band!) and beautiful new sets and costumes.
We wish to acknowledge that the land on which we gather is Treaty No. 6 territory
and a traditional meeting ground and home of the First Nations, including both the treaty signatories – Cree, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Stony and Cree-Iroquois – as well as other Indigenous peoples, such as the Blackfoot and Métis, who occupied this land. We extend our appreciation for the opportunity to live, create, and perform on this territory. STUDENTS CLUB The Citadel Theatre believes that young people are integral to the artistic fabric of our community and we are committed to programming and initiatives that develop their creative voices and encourage their participation. Students Club offers a unique glimpse into the world of professional theatre to a wide range of local junior and senior high school students. Prior to select performances of each of our Mainstage shows, members gather for a light supper and then participate in a highly engaging, interactive presentation with one of our region’s talented theatre artists, covering some aspect of theatre – from choreography to design, from stage combat to Shakespeare. Following the performance, students stay for an informative talkback with members of the production’s cast and crew. Prior to Students Club performances of Six, students enjoyed an interactive workshop with Andrew Ritchie. Andrew is a director and theatre maker from Edmonton. Andrew has worked across Canada and his work has ranged from new work, classical text, and immersive theatre. Andrew holds an MFA in Directing/ Creation from York University, a BA in Drama from University of Alberta and is a graduate of the Citadel/Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program. He is a co-founder of the Found Festival, Edmonton’s only site-specific arts festival, and was festival director from 2012-2015. He is an artistic director of You Are Here Theatre and founding co-artistic director of Thou Art Here Theatre with his best friend Neil Kuefler. He has performed improv across North America, Andrew Ritchie is an alumnus of Rapid Fire Theatre and current ensemble member of Hitchhikers Improv. Currently he lives in Regina, Saskatchewan and is the Theatre School Director and Sandbox Series Coordinator for the Globe Theatre. Upcoming he is directing Mr. Burns, a post-electric play by Anne Washburn (Fringe Theatre Adventures) and The Circle by Geoffrey Simon Brown (Globe Theatre). www.andrewritchie.net Through the workshop the students learned how directors work alongside actors to create performances unique to that actors personality and abilities. They now understand methods a director uses to get the best performance out of individuals and the notion of directing to personal advantages.
For more information on Students Club, or to become a part of the program, please contact Eden Edwards at 780.428.2127 or groupsales@citadeltheatre.com.

History of There are many potential origin stories for this show. One wherein the idea of the six wives as a pop group came to Toby in a sudden vision in the back of a poetry class and he scribbled the idea down along with the phrase, ‘need Lucy.’ One that goes further back to an evening spent despairing over the gender disparity in meaty theatrical parts and joking about writing a musical called ‘Live and Let Dido.’ Another that goes still further back to the formation of our friendship when we first went out on the town together and discovered we are both aggressively enthusiastic dancers. But the origin story that hopefully gives the best sense of where this piece has come from, and where we hope it might end up, actually took place much later than these, during our first proper writing session together in January 2012. We already knew we had a slot at the Edinburgh Fringe to fill with an original musical. The Cambridge University Musical Theatre Society (yep - acronym C.U.M.T.S...) – weary of annually haemorrhaging money in Edinburgh on the rights to real musicals by real writers – had generously granted us the opportunity to pen their upcoming production. We also had the basic concept of “the six wives of Henry VIII, but - like - a pop group” and some other criteria outlining the kind of show we wanted to write: e.g. we wanted a show that experimented with the form of a ‘traditional’ musical; we wanted to use pop music because that is what we both formally define as “our jam.” We had very little else. So in that initial meeting, we did two things. We spent an inordinate amount of time thinking up increasingly obscure potential titles for the show – the first of which was SIX. But we also decided to write a kind of manifesto of what we were trying to achieve – a manifesto that we hoped could act as a guidepost to check ourselves against during the writing process. Looking back on it now, it seems utterly absurd that two people who had never written anything together before – let alone an entire musical – came up with a document as unbelievably grand and self-righteous as this. (Honestly, who did we think we were?) We definitely fell short of our aims in some ways. For instance, it’s still very much up for debate whether or not the show actually passes the Bechdel test (oops). And in other ways, these aims feel very much like a relic of our own individual journeys discovering the discourse surrounding gender – a snapshot of a very specific moment in our lives in early 2012. Indeed, if we were to write this kind of document now, we are sure the outcome would be considerably different. But nonetheless this six point plan was essential in shaping our writing process and hopefully goes some way to explaining why the show exists in the way it does:

SIX’s ‘Six-Point Plan’ – what we’re trying to do: 1. We want to provide a different perspective on the six queens separate from their status as wives 2. We will give female historical figures a voice to tell their own experiences – experiences that have, in the past, predominantly been told by men

3. We aim to show that even 500 years later, there are still parallels to be found in the female experience 4. We will show that women can tell stories together that are interesting, engaging, clever, and funny – stories told by women do not have to be about or include men in order to be entertaining 5. We plan to use the pop concert genre to enable this fun, silly, comic, and powerful story to be told exclusively by women – but not just ‘for’ women – and in order to facilitate our third aim 6. All of the above needs to be done whilst above all acknowledging the silliness and campness of its own genre and being self-aware of its own message; it should never be earnest or too sincere
Lastly, we’d just like to say a massive thank you to everyone who has been involved in SIX’s journey, especially all of the remarkable performers who have thus far brought Aragon, Boleyn, Seymour, Cleves, Howard, and Parr to life onstage. You are all true queens. THANK YOU.

LAST CHRISTMAS,
the Citadel said goodbye to a beloved tradition. After 19 years, their much lauded production of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol went off to a special place reserved in theatrical heaven. That doesn’t mean there will be no Cratchits, Scrooges, ghosts and all the other Dickensian creations haunting the Maclab theatre this festive season. This ultimate tale of redemption will return in all its joyous and exultant glory in a new production for our times.

FORESHADOWING with Colin MacLean Citadel Artistic Director Daryl Cloran noted in a press conference earlier this year that the previous Tom Wood (playwright) and Bob Baker (director) production was still a potent force in the community but that the Citadel’s world had changed greatly in the decades. “It is a story that everyone knows and loves and we want to make sure that all the elements that were important in our previous production will remain. At the heart of our production is the strong relationship the Citadel has established with our community. Our long-time link with the Food Bank will continue.” Perhaps a major part of that change is best summed up by the playwright Cloran has chosen to pen the new take on the old tale, David van Belle. “When I look at the audiences who attend the Citadel today, especially in the student matinees, I am struck at how different they are now. In my discussions with Daryl, we talked about finding more space for people of colour. And for women artists. The new production will certainly be a show that people will want to go and see but we talked about how stage productions should reflect the audiences of today.” Cloran’s relationship with van Belle, a well known Edmonton-based actor, director, theatre advisor and playwright, goes back a long way. In 2014, Cloran directed one of van Belle’s larger productions, Liberation Days, for Theatre Calgary. The two have been discussing A Christmas Carol ever since they had a meeting at the Banff Playwrights Colony some three years ago. “When he was appointed Artistic Director at the Citadel we started to

pursue a series of serious conversations on the project,” remembers van Belle. “I think one of the reasons was that I loved to write for larger stages – which is not very common. Most playwrights write small productions with few actors just to get their work produced. I had been writing larger productions for A-list theatres pursuing my interest in spectacle and stage craft. When Daryl mentioned A Christmas Carol I thought ‘WOW! What a chance for some beautiful technical artistry.” With a chuckle Cloran promises, “It will be a lavish production.” Van Belle: “One of the things that drove me along through the whole process was that the story is so strong. The story of rehabilitation is at the core of the whole thing. Much of the original dialogue is still there but (with the help of script doctor Colleen Murphy) I learned that I could probably change what I wanted as I went along, but I’d have to tell the story. As long as I stuck to the story – the production will work.” Cloran: “We looked at the various elements of the story and decided that nostalgia was a driving factor. We kept returning to the ‘40’s and ‘50’s.”

WE WERE LOOKING FOR SOMETHING THAT WOULD “CHANGE THE SETTING BUT WOULD ALLOW THE AUDIENCE TO ENGAGE IN THE SAME DEPTHY FEELINGS.” We were fat and happy in those years. A debilitating World War was over and a period of peace, productivity and prosperity descended upon us. Christmas became a bountiful celebration featuring food not seen for generations. The films, toys and television programs of the era have become our own Christmas traditions. At the movies we went to see Miracle on 34th Street and It’s a Wonderful Life. Holiday Inn, and its step-child, White Christmas found huge audiences. On television, there was Rudolph, the Grinch, Charlie Brown and Frosty. Musically, Jingle Bell Rock was the first rock /n roll Christmas song but other Christmas bon bons included Silver Bells, A Holly Jolly Christmas and Eartha Kitt purring her way through, Santa Baby. Toys introduced during those years were Mr. Potato Head, Barbie and Etch A Sketch. As Neil Diamond chanted, “Good times never seemed so good...” The Americans were reaching for the moon. That’s no metaphor – a decade later they made it. And what better time than to place a re-imagined A Christmas Carol?

Dickens became recognized as “the man who invented Christmas.” He took an obscure pagan festival and, with the power of his one small novella, changed the face of Christmas forever. Says van Belle, “We were looking for something that would change the setting but would allow the audience to engage in the same depthy feelings.” Set and Costumes for the production are from the Citadel’s oft-used designer Cory Sincennes (Crazy For You/Spamalot). Sincennes was part of the team from the very beginning. “I wanted to bridge the nostalgia of the two worlds and bring them together in a way that felt familiar to us so that this new adaptation will welcome the audience as if it had been a part of their tradition their whole lives.” Much of the fun of the Baker production was in the many surprises it brought to audiences. In this new envisioning, “surprise” and “magic” are also part of the experience. I can offer you a few clues for what is to come. Bob Cratchit has died in World War II leaving Mrs. Cratchit to support her impoverished children. She goes to work, not for the Macy’s of Miracle on 34th Street, but for Marley’s, which, of course, is run by the crotchety miser, Ebenezer Scrooge. The plot has the grasping old geezer as a bottom-line kind of guy who puts business before anything else. He learns, through the ministrations of three benign ghosts, that, “The common welfare of man was my business; charity, mercy, forbearance, benevolence were all my business.”

FORESHADOWING with Colin MacLean This new version of the 176 year old story is now filled with music. There will be a number of old Christmas Carols and some hits culled mostly from the 40’s and 50’s like, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas and It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year...” which van Belle promises is going be a “show stopper.” Warming to the process, van Belle enthuses, “I love magic. I love reveals. I have always been a believer that there are many things theatre can do that just can’t be done in the movies or on TV. What makes theatre vital in the 21st century is that you have to keep surprising your audiences. There will be a lot of that in this production. I want to make people gasp.” Continuing the thread Sincennes observes, “We decided to lean heavy into the ghost story aspect of the cautionary tale – which provides us with lots of opportunity for magic and unexplained moments.” Sincennes loved juggling the time aspect. “The story crosses so many dramatically different eras of history and fashion through flashbacks. Post industrialization, the world began to evolve so fast – so by setting our show in a post WW2 setting audiences will see how much change Scrooge has had to live through in his life. This new historical context provides so many extra layers of character and story to explore. In our time line, Scrooge would have lived through both world wars and the great depression – to name just a few huge events in world history. From a late Edwardian era, through the roaring ‘20’s to the late 1940’s – there is so much exciting imagery to explore.” One person ready for this A Christmas Carol is the Pride of St. Albert, Alberta and one of Canada’s premier actor/playwright/performers, Ted Dykstra, who will play Scrooge. “The last time I was here,“ he muses, “I presented Daryl with a list of roles I’d like to play. Two years later, he called me and said, ‘Here you go!’ A reason I love A Christmas Carol so much is you can take this universal story of redemption and place it in any year. It’s timeless and will always be current. I take the responsibility of playing Scrooge in this first production of a new vision very seriously.” The holiday haunt begins in the Maclab Theatre of the Citadel on November 30 and runs through December 23.
THIS NEW HISTORICAL CONTEXT PROVIDES “SO MANY EXTRA LAYERS OF CHARACTER AND STORY TO EXPLORE.”
