STUDENTS CLUB The Maclab Enterprises Students Club is

a Citadel Theatre program that offers a unique glimpse into the world of professional theatre to a wide range of junior and senior high school students from Edmonton and surrounding areas. On the first three Tuesdays and Wednesdays of our Mainstage productions, Students Club members gather to enjoy a small reception before the show and then participate in a highly engaging, interactive presentation/ demonstration involving one of the Citadel’s talented theatre artists. Following the performance, students are then invited to stay for a lively talkback session with members of the production’s cast and crew. Prior to seeing Spamalot, Student’s Club members will take part in a workshop led by Liana Shannon, a local actor in both theatre and film as well as a teacher for film and theatre here at the Foote Theatre School. This presentation will allow members to explore the world of both mediums. After examining and discussing clips from the film Monty Python and the Holy Grail the students will brainstorm about how the scenes were shot and how they might be translated to the stage. Liana has trained at the Etobicoke School of the Arts, the Academy of Theatre Arts (Toronto), the University of Guelph, and countless acting workshops across Canada and in LA.

Liana Shannon

If you would like to become part of this season’s Students Club, or require more information about the program, please contact Shar Powell, Booking Coordinator, at 428-2127. For individual students who are interested in joining please email Shar at spowell@citadeltheatre.com and leave your name, contact information and the name of the school you attend.

playwrights ERIC IDLE

(Book and Lyrics)

Eric Idle (Book, lyrics, and music) has multi-hyphenated his way through life assiduously avoiding a proper job, from a writer and actor in the legendary “Monty Python” TV series and movies, to the creator and director of “The Rutles,” the pre-fab four, whose legend will last a lunchtime. He has appeared on stage in drag singing rude songs at Carnegie Hall and the Hollywood Bowl as well as performing in two highly successful tours, Eric Idle Exploits Monty Python (2000) and The Greedy Bastard Tour (2003), for which he journeyed 15,000 miles across North America in a bus. His Greedy Bastard Diary of that tour is published by Harper Collins. His play Pass The Butler ran for five months in London’s West End; he has written two novels, Hello Sailor and The Road to Mars, a children’s book, The Quite Remarkable Adventures of the Owl and the Pussycat, and a bedside companion, The Rutland Dirty Weekend Book.

JOHN DU PREZ

(Music)

John Du Prez, a Trevelyan Scholar at Christ Church, Oxford, and Associate of the Royal College of Music, entered the film industry in 1978 composing additional music for Monty Python’s Life of Brian. This began a long association with Eric Idle, leading eventually to their current writing partnership. He has scored more than 20 feature films including The Meaning of Life, A Private Function, A Fish Called Wanda, Once Bitten, uhf and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles i, ii and iii. Other Python projects include The Contractual Obligation Album, Monty Python at The Hollywood Bowl and The Fairly Incomplete & Rather Badly Illustrated Monty Python Song Book. He was musical director for Eric Idle’s two North American stage tours, Eric Idle Exploits Monty Python (2000) and The Greedy Bastard Tour (2003). Spamalot was his Broadway debut. play Hold onto your coconuts and brace yourself for something completely different as we catapult you back 1,000 years. You may think you know the story of King Arthur and his heroic search for the Holy Grail. You may even think you know the Monty Python movie that was lovingly ripped off for your enjoyment. Well, think again! Join King Arthur and his entourage, the Knights of the Round Table, in a gallant quest for glory as they confront killer rabbits, the Knights Who Say Ni and the dreaded Black Knight. Cheer on these noble lads as they wrestle with the not-quite dead and save an androgynous damsel (?) in distress. Rock the castle with the pulsating sensuality of The Lady of the Lake and her Laker Girls. Witness French people tossing cattle. Okay, perhaps this does sound rather like the movie, but in the play everyone sings tunefully! Well, almost everyone. And it’s in tune most of the time. The original Broadway production of Monty Python’s Spamalot opened in 2005 and was nominated for 14 Tony Awards, winning three including Best Musical. It ran for 1,500 performances on Broadway and was seen by over two million people. Productions of Spamalot have played in over 22 countries. And now you can count yourself amongst the privileged few who got to see it, you lucky so-and-so.

30 MONTY PYTHON’S SPAMALOT

PYTHONS Graham Chapman The late Graham Chapman was a British comedian who is best known for being one of the zanier members of the notorious Monty Python troupe. Chapman was sometimes viewed as the quintessential Python, having played the lead in two of the Monty Python feature films. He was King Arthur in Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Brian in Life of Brian. One of his most famous characters from his days on Monty Python’s Flying Circus was “The Colonel,” who would often appear in the middle of a sketch and pronounce it too silly to continue. As a television writer, Chapman’s credits included work on the long-running television series Doctor in the House and At Last the 1948 Show. He first teamed with writing partner John Cleese on The Frost Report, where they met the men who would become the Pythons. Chapman appeared on many US non-scripted television shows, including Hollywood Squares, Still Crazy Like a Fox and The Big Show. Chapman studied medicine at the University of Cambridge and earned his M.D. at the Barts Hospital Medical College. After two years of practice, Chapman decided to pursue his true passion, comedy. Chapman lived a whirlwind life full of fun and adventure, from his friendships with Keith Moon and Ringo Starr to helping to pioneer the sport of bungee jumping. Chapman died in 1989 after losing his battle with spinal and throat cancer.

John Cleese John Cleese is a British comedian and actor who is best remembered for his iconic character, Basil Fawlty, in the sitcom Fawlty Towers, and his role as one of the members of the legendary Monty Python troupe. In a 2005 poll, The Comedian’s Comedian, Cleese was voted the second best comedian of all time. Cleese has transcended his British roots, achieving international fame as a film actor for his role in the modern classic A Fish Called Wanda. Almost two decades since this breakout role, he is still acting in blockbusters such as The World is Not Enough and Die Another Day, Shrek 2, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. As a television actor, Cleese made an indelible mark on the small screen. He began as a staff writer for The Frost Report, a watershed production in British comedic history, where he met the men who would become his fellow Pythons. As a member of the Monty Python troupe, Cleese wrote and acted in the first three seasons of Monty Python’s Flying Circus. During the fourth season of Flying Circus, Cleese received a minor writing credit while focusing on the development of his character Basil Fawlty in Fawlty Towers, a series that won critical acclaim and is considered a classic example of British comedy. Cleese has garnered two Primetime Emmys for his guest appearances on Third Rock from the Sun and Will & Grace, as well as a nomination for his appearance on Cheers. Cleese was educated at Clifton College in Bristol, England, where he was expelled for a humorous defacing of school grounds. His talent for comedy would win him a membership in the Cambridge Footlights Review while he was attending Downing College at the University of Cambridge in pursuit of a degree in law. It was in the Footlights Review that he befriended Graham Chapman, who became his writing partner. MONTY PYTHON’S SPAMALOT 31

PYTHONS Terry Gilliam Terry Gilliam is a celebrated director, comedian and animator known for his distinctive style and for being the only non-British member of the Monty Python troupe. Gilliam’s directorial work has spanned three decades, and his most recent works have garnered substantial critical acclaim and box office success. His films, including Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Twelve Monkeys, are full of disturbing imagery that challenges the viewers’ perceptions of sanity and reality. Known for his ability to put mature spins on more childlike productions, Gilliam was J.K. Rowling’s first choice to direct the cinematic interpretations of her Harry Potter book series. Examples of his previous work in this area can be seen in his projects The Brothers Grimm and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. As an animator, Gilliam created the Monty Python animation style, characterized by its odd shapes and moving cutouts from vintage photographs. This style has been mimicked by artists for television series, advertisements and children’s programming ever since. Gilliam graduated from Occidental College in Los Angeles before moving to England, where he was an animator for Do Not Adjust Your Set before joining Monty Python’s Flying Circus.

Eric Idle Eric Idle is a comedian, actor, director and songwriter, but Idle is best known as one of the zany and legendary members of the Monty Python troupe. Idle most recently wrote the book and lyrics for the Tony Award-winning Spamalot, based on the Monty Python classic, Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Idle prefers to write alone, unlike the other members of Monty Python, who tend to work in comedic teams. His solo talents have provided some of the classic Python skits, such as “Nudge Nudge Wink Wink.” Idle also composed the majority of the songs featured in the Monty Python television series and films, including “Eric the Half-a-Bee,” “The Philosophers’ Song” and the cult favorite, “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life” from Life of Brian. Idle’s writing talents extend beyond the screen and stage, and he has written several fiction and non-fiction books. His novels are Hello Sailor, The Road to Mars, and The Rutland Dirty Weekend Book, spin-off of “Rutland Weekend Television.” In addition to his roles in the Monty Python productions, Idle has lent his voice and talents to many diverse projects, including Ella Enchanted, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation 2, South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, National Lampoon’s European Vacation and Wind and the Willows. Idle was enrolled in Royal Wolverhampton boarding school at the age of seven. Growing up in this environment, Idle developed the wit and intelligence that would win him a place at Cambridge, where he met his fellow Pythons.

PYTHONS Terry Jones Terry Jones is a British comedian, writer and director whose goofy sketches and wild imagination made him an invaluable member of the Monty Python troupe. As an actor on Monty Python’s Flying Circus, Jones was the Python most often chosen to portray roles as middleaged women — but as a writer and director his true charms shone through. Jones’ directorial skills can be seen in all three of the Python feature length films, co-directing Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and directing Life of Brian and The Meaning of Life. Jones went on to direct several motion pictures apart from the Pythons, including Erik the Viking and The Wind in the Willows. Jones’ true passion is in writing, and his preferred writing partner as a Python was Michael Palin. Together, they worked on The Frost Report, Monty Python’s Flying Circus, Do Not Adjust Your Set and Ripping Yarns. As a solo writer, Jones’ work includes the screenplay for the 1986 movie Labyrinth, starring David Bowie. In addition to television and film scripts, Jones has written several books on medieval history and numerous children’s stories. He also has published anti-war editorials in the Guardian, the Daily Telegraph and the Observer.

Michael Palin Michael Palin is a British comedian and television presenter who is most recognized for being one of the members of the Monty Python troupe. In a 2005 poll, The Comedian’s Comedian, Palin was voted one of the world’s Top 50 comedians of all time. As a member of Monty Python, Palin wrote and acted in many of the legendary skits and is credited for creating some of its most memorable sketches. One of his original sketches, Spanish Inquisition, has become a part of popular culture in the form of a widely used catchphrase, “Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition.” In addition to acting in Monty Python’s Flying Circus and the many Python feature length films, Palin was the stuttering “Ken Pile” in the 1988 hit, A Fish Called Wanda. Palin has also had brief stints in the world of serious acting, including a role in the UK Channel 4 serial drama, G.B.H. As a television host, Palin has created a legacy of travel programming that has given rise to the term “the Palin effect,” describing the rise in tourism in areas of the world recently visited by him. For instance, there was a significant increase in the number of British tourists interested in vacationing in the Sahara region in 2003 after his special Sahara aired in 2002. His work in travel programming began with taping an episode of the 1980 BBC Television series, Great Railway Journeys of the World. Palin participated in theatre while studying History at the University of Oxford; it was there that he met Terry Jones, who would become his writing partner and fellow Monty Python member.

Last year, due to financial pressures, Baker had to shut down the Rice, the

theatre’s platform for alternative work. “I think I was pretty candid that we were trying to make the best of a difficult time,” he observed. The idea he came up with was to turn the jewel of a black box into a “club,” an adaptable space where various kinds of entertainment could be presented. It turned out to be inspired. He must have taken heart when Rebecca Northan walked into the room looking for a home for her one-person clown show Blind Date and “...went over the moon.” “You have to be kidding,” she beamed. “This is so good for my show.” Blind Date has now twice played to sold out houses. Few who saw it will forget Susan Gilmour’s one-woman performance – an evening of musical magic that launched the venue. Just recently, Réjean Cournoyer turned “The Club” into a Paris bistro for an evening of Jacques Brel. Bridget Ryan sold out two nights (and will return). Enthuses Baker, “Performers are beginning to design shows specifically for the space.” Those unlikely masters of the ukelele, the Be Arthurs, are developing an evening. All this as well as lectures, master classes and late night cabarets. Keep your eye on the old Rice stage – there’s lots of life in the old girl yet.

Eugene O’Neill’s plays are emotionally probing and largely autobiographical and none more so than his towering Pulitzer prize winning masterwork, Long Day’s Journey Into Night. The action takes place on a fateful night in August, 1912, at the seaside home of the Tyrones. In the near real time three hours the play takes to unfold, family members blame each other for their familial shipwreck while attempting to conceal their real emotions. The conflict escalates with occasional sincere (but doomed) efforts at affection and consolation. Tyrone, once a promising Shakespearian actor, sold his talent when he bought a “vehicle” for himself and has spent most of his career playing the only role his audiences would accept. The aging performer moves and declaims in the grand manner of the classical actor. With his experience playing Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman and Big Daddy in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof at the Citadel, it’s hard to imagine an actor better suited to the role than Tom Wood. Observes Baker, “Tom is completely opposite in many ways to Tyrone and yet, through his theatrical experience, he is capable of a huge performance while maintaining a very intimate experience.” Tyrone’s addicted wife, Mary, will be played by Brenda Bazinet, herself a multitalented performer, who recently directed the Citadel’s production of The Penelopiad. Tyrone’s cynical older son, Jamie, (played by the amazingly versatile John Ullyatt – who repeats the “son” role with Wood as he did in Cat and Salesman) is also an actor but a drunken womanizer as well. His second son, Edmund, is a dreamer and poet suffering from tuberculosis. “The Citadel has a responsibility to present these classics,” observes Baker. “I always think there are generations out there who have never experienced the power of these plays. And if they are not presented they cease to exist.” Long Day’s Journey... begins the season on September 21, 2013. 2 Pianos 4 Hands finally comes to the Citadel Stage with its two creators at the grands. Next Oct. 26, Ted Dykstra – and co-creator Richard Greenblatt bring their international smash to the city. This will be the final performance of the remarkable theatrical success story that began in 1996 and has been seen by about 2 million people. Dykstra comes from Edmonton and Baker talked him into mounting it one more time in his home town. Clybourne Park, Bruce Norris’ hilarious but probing look at racism in middle America has an interesting structure. It takes place in a single home but there is a space of 50 years between Acts 1 and 2. When we first meet the occupants they are white and under pressure not to sell the house to prospective buyers – who are black. In Act 2, the black owners battle some upper-class whites who want to “gentrify” the neighbourhood by tearing the old place down and building a modern structure. The play began Off-Broadway, went to London and returned to New York in triumph for a long run, – picking up a Tony, an Olivier and a Pulitzer

Prize along the way. “It’s somewhat like Red or God of Carnage – extremely well-written contemporary plays that come to us trailing all the big awards,” says Baker. Look to visit Clybourne Park in January. Mary Poppins, everyone’s favourite nanny, then levitates into the Citadel in the new Cameron MacKintosh version. It’s still anchored firmly in the charm and musicality of the Disney original but a new, darker book has been added by Julian Fellowes, the chap responsible for television’s Downton Abbey. Actually, the Citadel has been trying to summon the “practically perfect in every way” nanny from London’s smoggy skies for years but the rights have not been available. Look for “that Poppins woman,” complete with parasol and carpet bag, to fly in on an obliging gust of wind on March 15.

Long time Citadel patrons may remember Tom Wood as Mercutio in John Neville’s production of Romeo and Juliet – the first play ever on the stage of the “new” Citadel back in 1975. Well, Tom is to bring the play back – this time as director at the head of the young players who will be participating in the Citadel/Banff Professional Theatre program next year. Tom’s earlier forays into the Bard’s Elysian fields (A Midsummer Night’s Dream/Hamlet and others) have shown that the actor/ writer/director has a unique feel for Shakespeare and will deliver his usual intelligent, respectful and (no doubt) emotion-filled production. It will be Tom again, featured in Make Mine Love – but this time it will be Wood, the writer. The playwright has been labouring now for about five years to pen the play in an effort to recreate the fizz of the 30’s relationship movie genre, the Screwball Comedy. Films like It Happened One Night and My Man Godfrey grew out of the great depression. The best known stars of the genre were Claudette Colbert, Gary Cooper, Clark Gable, Carole Lombard and Jean Harlow. Baker promises mistaken identities, a ride on the 20th Century Limited, a car chase and, in a notable casting coup – John Ullyatt, as a charming but dissolute matinee Idol and Rebecca Northan (the incomparable Mimi of Blind Date) as an overbearing but loveless Hollywood Diva. This champagne production pops its cork on May 10. In September, the internationally renowned puppeteer Ronnie Burkett returns to the Citadel with an add-on to the regular season. After taking on such global issues as the holocaust and the end of the world, Ronnie will be returning to the kind of improv vaudeville that made his name in the beginning. Most of the show will be Ronnie jamming on the news of the day – so each show will be different. Oh, and did I mention, he will be bringing some 30 of his marionettes along to help out. The show will run for a month and Burkett has stipulated that no ticket will cost more than $25.00. Another add-on to the season is Do You Want What I Have Got? This riotous review is from CBC wit Bill Richardson with music by Vancouver’s Vida Hille. It began small – but has expanded exponentially across the country attracting ever growing audiences. It’s based on some of the strange and weird objects that appear for sale on the internet’s craigslist and what that says about the people who place the ads. Quirky, filled with hummable music and quite delightful this craigslist cantata opens February 5th.

And yes, A Christmas Carol will be back. We can’t get enough of the Tom Wood/Bob Baker classic. Is it getting old and tired? It is not. In fact, observes Baker, “Last year was its 13th season and more people attended than ever before.” And I’ll bet they’ll be back and perhaps will take in other productions in what promises to be one of the Citadel’s best years yet.

message from the

artistic director,

O

n behalf of all of us at the Citadel Theatre, we would like to Thank You – our patrons, premier supporters, donors, funders, corporate and media sponsors, for your incredible contribution to this season and for your loyalty and commitment. Live theatre plays such an important role in our community and would not be possible without your generosity! Whether you are a long-time supporter or have walked through our doors for the very first time, we hope that you found this season’s mix of plays to be entertaining, thought-provoking and truly memorable! You are invited to take part in what will prove to be a very exciting 2013/2014 season. We are very proud to bring you more of what you love about the Citadel – more comedies, more intrigue, more musicals, more classics and more innovation. In its first year, The Club at The Citadel has proven to be a truly remarkable venue. Home to all of our Beyond the Stage programming, patrons were able to experience after hour cabarets, live music, comedy shows, new play readings and so much more. We are also thrilled to report on the continued evolution of the Robbins Academy, where we train professional artists to a higher level, mentor and prepare teens and young adults for a career in the arts, and introduce children of all ages to the magic of theatre. We thank Bill and Mary Jo Robbins for their on-going commitment to this

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, and BOARD PRESIDENT important work and for incenting others to join in supporting us. We would also like to acknowledge the Eldon and Anne Foote Fund and the John and Barbara Poole Family Fund for their visionary support of the creative development of artists and youth at the Citadel over the years. Thank you to all three levels of government for their continued support of the arts in our community. We have contributed to the vibrancy of the downtown Arts District and the social fabric of our city by providing a complex that is more than five performance spaces – but rather a gem in the center of the city that not only houses our productions, but also provides space and service to our partners like the Edmonton Comedy Festival, The University of Alberta Festival of ideas, Rapid Fire Theatre and many more. We faced our fair share of challenges this past year, as a result of local and world economic swings and changes in audience demographics, and we also grieved the loss of beloved members of our community. Again, we can not Thank You enough for your unfailing support. Because of you, the Citadel remains a vital presence in our city, province and throughout Canada, and we look forward to the future—our 50th Anniversary— in 2015! Finally, we give a standing ovation to our artists, production teams, management, staff, volunteers and Board for their hard work and love of the arts. With our deepest gratitude,

Penny Ritco, Executive Director
