Message From The

Artistic Director Welcome to Sweat! Sweat won the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Lynn Nottage began working on the play in 2011 by interviewing residents of Reading, Pennsylvania, which at the time was, according to the United States Census Bureau, officially one of the poorest cities in America, with a poverty rate of over 40 per cent. The script looks at how a community is affected when local factories are closed and the work moves out of town. Against that backdrop, the script asks tough questions about friendship, loyalty and survival.

This season, the Public Theatre in New York toured Sweat throughout America. But not to big theatres – to small communities, playing in churches and community halls. To the cities, and people, that this play speaks about. Each tour stop was supported by outreach activities designed to give communities a chance to respond to the play. To me, that’s the power of theatre: the ability to start conversations, for audiences to see a story and emerge discussing different points of view. Sweat is a real conversation-starter. I guarantee you’ll be talking about choices, responsibilities, and politics as you head home after the show. This is a partnership with our friends at the Arts Club Theatre in Vancouver. The production opened in Vancouver in October, and now comes to the Citadel. I believe the best thing about partnerships is the opportunity for artists from different communities to collaborate. This production is the perfect example: four of the actors are from Vancouver and four are from Edmonton. Our thanks to the Arts Club for their partnership, and thanks to you, our audience, for joining us at the theatre for this thought-provoking, heartfelt production. Enjoy the show!

Daryl Cloran, Artistic Director

We wish to acknowledge that the land on which we gather is Treaty No. 6 territory and a traditional meeting ground and home of the First Nations, including both the treaty signatories – Cree, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Stony and Cree-Iroquois – as well as other Indigenous peoples, such as the Blackfoot and Métis, who occupied this land. We extend our appreciation for the opportunity to live, create and perform on this territory.

Students Club The Citadel Theatre believes that young people are integral to the artistic fabric of our community and we are committed to programming and initiatives that develop their creative voices and encourage their participation. Students Club offers a unique glimpse into the world of professional theatre to a wide range of local junior and senior high school students. Prior to select performances of each of our Mainstage shows, members gather for a light supper and then participate in a highly engaging, interactive presentation with one of our region’s talented theatre artists, covering some aspect of theatre – from choreography to design, from stage combat to Shakespeare. Following the performance, students stay for an informative talkback with members of the production’s cast and crew. Prior to performances of SWEAT, students enjoyed an interactive workshop with Rachel Bowron. An Edmonton-based actor, Rachel’s most recent theatre credits include Crazy for You (Citadel Theatre/ Theatre Calgary), Avenue Q (Citadel Theatre); A Lesson In Brio, Barefoot in the Park, The Hoof and Mouth Advantage (Teatro la Quindicina); Fallen Angels (Bright Young Things); Legoland (Blarney Productions); The Last Resort, Don’t Dress For Dinner (Mayfield Dinner Theatre); It’s A Bird, It’s A Plane, It’s Superman (Plain Jane Theatre). She is a Rachel Bowron three-time Sterling nominated actor, and was music director of the St. Albert Children’s Theatre for nine years. Rachel is thrilled to be returning to the Citadel in The Candidate/The Party this year! Through the workshop the students learned how actor-musicians artists can work navigate playing instruments to tell stories and the balance struck between truth and skill.

For more information on Students Club, or to become a part of the program, please contact Shirley Tran at 780.428.2127 or groupsales@citadeltheatre.com.

Colin MacLean is the dean of Edmonton theatre reviewers. In 2007, Colin was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award for Outstanding Contribution to Theatre in Edmonton at the Sterling Awards.

You don’t have to look very far in children’s author Roald Dahl’s life to see from whence his darkness came. He lost his older sister and father when he was three years old. He was packed off to boarding school at the age of nine. In his autobiography, Boy, he recalls in great detail the headmaster’s penchant for floggings so vicious they drew blood.

In World War II, he became a nimble air ace, achieving great success until he crashed in the Western Desert. He came close to dying in that one and was invalided out. Dahl was then promoted to intelligence officer where, as the BBC reported in a recent article, “He spent the rest of the war in the U.S. seducing heiresses and wealthy widows in the name of counterintelligence. His first marriage was to Hollywood star (and celebrated beauty) Patricia Neal. The couple lost their daughter to illness and their only son was left brain-damaged in a traffic accident. A few years later, Neal herself suffered a series of strokes. After the war, he decided to try his hand at writing and achieved a degree of success with a series of macabre and disturbing ghost stories, which were published in magazines such as The New Yorker and Playboy. He wrote the James Bond film, You Only Live Twice. And then came James and the Giant Peach. He first told the story to his own children and then decided to write it down. It was his first work for children and it was unlike anything else in the literature of the time. When his parents die, young James flies away from his grasping aunties on the giant peach of the title and the aunties are summarily squashed by the rolling fruit. Though the book appeared in the U.S. in 1961, Dahl had to wait until 1967 before a British publisher would risk it, and even then, he had to agree to come up with half the costs himself. In retrospect, it was a savvy move when the book quickly became a bestseller.

Books and stories are of “ incalculable worth as weapons of defense, attack and survival.”

The books followed one after the other: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Fantastic Mr. Fox, The BFG, The Witches, Matilda, George’s Marvellous Machine – and others. Over his decades-long career, he wrote 19 children’s books. Dahl makes little bow to the tender years of his readers. His books may be filled with the wonder of childhood but the author challenges his young readers (and reminds adults) that children are grappling with far more than we care to remember. Dahl’s books are usually tales of empowerment as told from the perspective of the most powerless group of all. They inevitably involve adult villains who hate and mistreat children – although, there is always a “good” adult to counteract the bad. Whimsical and dark Dahl’s tales may be, but there is always an undercurrent of warm sentiment. You don’t have to read too closely to hear the loving father behind the words on the page. There is advice for young readers – suggestions on how to navigate the no man’s land of childhood. Dahl was an inveterate reader and used his writing to invite children into the

world of great books. You might check out the authors Matilda takes out of the library in the 1996 film: Dickens, Hemingway, and Kipling. The enemy is often television. As the Umpa Loompas sing in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, “So please, Oh please, We beg, We pray, Go throw your TV set away.” Exhorts the author, “Books and stories are of incalculable worth as weapons of defense, attack and survival. It’s about turning the alphabet into magic and using it to rule the world.” Writing from a gypsy caravan that he kept in the backyard, Dahl created wild, phantasmagorical stories. He celebrated his small heroes and heroines – their curiosity, cleverness, imagination, ability to see humour in the darkest of situations – and he didn’t leave out the awful bits about death and suffering. Dahl shared his love of words, often without explanation, leaving it up to the children to figure it out for themselves. Words like “gobblefunk” – confusing and mixing up words, “swizzfiggling” – the act of teasing, “repusant” – something extraordinarily wonderful, “zozimus” – the material that dreams are made of, “uckyslush” – something good to eat. Or if you want a real challenge, try this one from the screenplay he wrote for the movie Chitty Chitty Bang Bang: “scrumdiddlyumptious.” One survey called him, “One of the greatest storytellers for children of the 20th century” – ranking ahead of Dickens, Shakespeare, and Rowling. Said The Independent of 2012, “He’s arguably the Shakespeare of children’s literature – filmmakers and animators are still

drawing from the enormous vat of material he created.” (Netflix recently announced an animated series that will encompass some of his most popular works – including Matilda.) Like the Brothers Grimm fairy tales and J.K Rowling’s Harry Potter magical epics, Dahl’s books have often been banned from school libraries by parents and educators who consider them too inappropriate or scary for kids. “Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it,” observed Dahl in The Minpins. His most successful book is 1988’s Matilda, which has sold somewhere north of 17 million copies.

who don’t believe in magic “Thosewill never find it.” On the morning of April 12 in 2013, the normally sedate New York Times exhorted readers to “storm the barricades,” to “join the insurrection against tyranny, television, illiteracy, unjust punishment and impoverished imaginations (...and follow) a five-year-old with a poker face and an off-the-chart IQ.” The occasion was the opening of The Royal Shakespeare Company production of Matilda – rendered as a musical by Dennis Kelly and Tim Minchin. The reviewer, Ben Brantley, admitted to having “a knot in his stomach”

for much of the production. Our own Citadel artistic director Daryl Cloran conceded that he shed a tear or two when he took in the same production in New York. Cloran will direct the local production, which already has enjoyed a successful run in Winnipeg (it’s produced in partnership with the Art Club Theatre Company and the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre). Matilda is the story of a little girl with extraordinary powers. The daughter of dim-witted, abusive parents, she finds refuge in library books – which she reads quickly, and then creates her own stories. She’s sent off to a private school where she must face the tyrannical and cruel Miss Trunchbull – who believes in Crunchem Hall’s motto: “Bambinatum est magitum,” or “Children are maggots.” The little girl finds companionship in her teacher, the shy, fragile Miss Honey. If Matilda is going to make it through to adulthood, she realizes she has to stand up to the adults in her world – and in doing so discovers her own remarkable powers. She sings, “Nobody but me is going to change my story (so) sometimes you have to be a little bit naughty.” Anyone who has seen the Broadway production will attest to the demands placed on the central character. She is called on to sing, dance, and perform like an experienced trooper. There are production numbers to be danced and power ballads to be delivered – a feat that could challenge a mini-Garland. The performance we saw in London left the audience breathless, exhilarated, and marveling. Cloran did not go to the major centres to find a showbusiness child savant to play the role – he looked right in his backyard. In both Edmonton and Winnipeg, the role is played by Lilla Solymos. You have probably seen Lilla before – she played Tiny Tim in the Citadel’s production of A Christmas Carol for three seasons. She got her first taste of theatre here in the Citadel’s Foote Theatre School. She’s a member of a local dance company and sings in an Edmonton choir. As is the practice in productions of the show (and necessitated by the demands on a young performer) the role will be double-cast. Winnipeg’s Anna Anderson-Epp will alternate with Lilla in the title role. As an additional note, the fearsome Miss Trunchbull is traditionally played by a man. For the choice role, Cloran has chosen our own local chameleon John Ullyatt – a choice made in histrionic heaven. Matilda: The Musical is about books and stories and how they became magic talismans in one child’s quest to find her place in a very scary world. It opens February 16 in the Shoctor Theatre and spins its alchemy through March 17.
