Message From The

Artistic Director Welcome to The Tempest! Ten years ago, I travelled to Sweden as part of a contingent of Torontobased theatre-makers. Our plan was to spend a week at Tyst Teater, the national Deaf theatre of Sweden, and to learn from and collaborate with Artistic Director Josette Bushell-Mingo and her ensemble of artists. I was blown away by the work I saw at Tyst and I left determined that I would work with Josette one day. Jump ahead many years and I suddenly find myself in Edmonton at the Citadel. I want to reimagine our Citadel/Banff program to include opportunities for Deaf and hearing performers to collaborate on our stage together. I know the best person to helm a production of this crosscultural and cross-language complexity! I reach out to Josette to invite her to come to the Citadel to direct, and she accepts!

As our Citadel/Banff production, the actors and assistant directors began by training together at the Banff Centre under the leadership of Ravi Jain, one of Canada’s most exciting theatre artists, educators, and thinkers. Ravi created an amazing program in which the artists spent a month building ensemble and working physically together. This has been an enormous project for the Citadel. Our staff have all been working hard to ensure the production, and the theatre itself, are accessible and welcoming for Deaf artists and audiences. Here at the Citadel, we have three artistic “pillars” that guide our work. We believe we must be Innovative, Inclusive, and International in our productions and our practices. This production of The Tempest represents all of these values. It is a thrilling, unique artistic work, created by artists from different cultures and languages, lead by a visionary director who has come here from Sweden. This is exactly the kind of exemplary, innovative theatre experience we are so proud to produce. My thanks to all of the artists, interpreters, and staff who have helped make this wildly ambitious project possible. And my thanks to you, our audience, for supporting live theatre here in Edmonton. Enjoy the show! Daryl Cloran, Artistic Director

We wish to acknowledge that the land on which we gather is Treaty No. 6 territory and a traditional meeting ground and home of the First Nations, including both the treaty signatories – Cree, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Stony and Cree-Iroquois – as well as other Indigenous peoples, such as the Blackfoot and Métis, who occupied this land. We extend our appreciation for the opportunity to live, create and perform on this territory. Message From The

EXECUTIVE Director and board president

We asked you to join us in “Reimagining” this season

through our stories and characters – including an unconventional love in Once, an extraordinary and brave (and slightly naughty) little girl in Matilda, a madcap (and shared!) cast of characters and political plots in The Party and The Candidate, and now a powerful and magical story in The Tempest, Shakespeare’s final play, turned on its axis. We also asked you to share in the reimagining of our theatre space with curated lobby experiences, unique events like dinners on the stage and the magic of our inaugural Dickens Fest. We welcomed thousands of youth to our student matinees and workshops and embraced hundreds of newcomers to Canada as Citadel guests. We are proud of the more than 50 years that we have been creating theatre experiences like these in Edmonton. We thank you for joining us in those experiences. Whether you are with us for a single performance or are a season ticket holder returning show after show, year after year, your presence is a vote of confidence for what we do. We hope that you have enjoyed this season and are as excited as we are about the next one – we’ve even planned a summer show so we can see you again sooner! We wouldn’t be delivering these experiences without our generous sponsors and donors – a very special thank you to you for supporting us in our goal of delivering high-calibre live theatre in Edmonton. We are so grateful to have you beside us in recognizing the importance of the arts to a strong Edmonton community. The work you see on the stage is the “tip of the iceberg” – we build our shows from the ground up, and without every team member and volunteer adding their skills and effort, the show simply would not go on. Thank you to the artistic, production, technical, administrative, and patron services staff and volunteers that allow us to produce a season of such variety and quality. We thank them and acknowledge their tireless efforts and willingness to do whatever it takes to deliver the beautiful productions that entertain, challenge, and delight our audiences. We have planned a glorious 2019/2020 Season for you, with more surprises in store. We can’t wait to share them with you. Chantell & Wendy

Students Club The Citadel Theatre believes that young people are integral to the artistic fabric of our community and we are committed to programming and initiatives that develop their creative voices and encourage their participation. Students Club offers a unique glimpse into the world of professional theatre to a wide range of local junior and senior high school students. Prior to select performances of each of our Mainstage shows, members gather for a light supper and then participate in a highly engaging, interactive presentation with one of our region’s talented theatre artists, covering some aspect of theatre – from choreography to design, from stage combat to Shakespeare. Following the performance, students stay for an informative talkback with members of the production’s cast and crew. Prior to performances of The Tempest, students enjoyed an interactive workshop with Chris Dodd. Chris is a Deaf performing artist and playwright. He is the founder and artistic director of Canada’s national theatre festival dedicated to the Deaf performing arts, SOUND OFF: A Deaf Theatre Festival, which is done in collaboration with Workshop West Playwrights’ Theatre. He is an artistic associate with Workshop West and is one of their Playwrights in Development. Recent performing credits include Queen Seraphina and the Land of Vertebraat with Saskatoon’s Sum Theatre, Gravity with Theatre Yes, and Ultrasound with Toronto’s Theatre Passe Muraille; where he assisted with the creation of the Deaf Artists and Theatres Toolkit (DATT). Chris holds a BA (Honours) degree from the University of Alberta’s Drama program.

Through the interactive workshop, the students learned how to incorporate physical acting, non-verbal communication, and choice signs to expand their ability to express themselves onstage in a non-verbal way.

PLAYWRIGHT William Shakespeare was an English poet, playwright, and actor. He was born on April 26, 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon. Shakespeare is widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world’s pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England’s national poet and nicknamed, “The Bard of Avon.” He wrote about 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and a few other verses, of which the authorship of some is uncertain. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright. Shakespeare produced most of his known work between 1589 and 1613. His early plays were mainly comedies and histories, and these works remain regarded as some of the best work produced in these genres. He then wrote mainly tragedies until about 1608, including Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth; they are considered some of the finest works in the English language. In his last phase, he wrote tragicomedies, also known as romances, and collaborated with other playwrights. Four hundred years later, Shakespeare’s plays remain highly popular today and are constantly studied, performed, and reinterpreted in diverse cultural and political contexts throughout the world. William Shakespeare died on April 23, 1616, at the age of 52.

Director’s Welcome to The Tempest, Shakespeare’s last,

great play – reimagined as a tragedy of love, revenge, and power. This is no ordinary tempest – it’s the result of a unique creativity between Deaf and hearing actors, between American Sign Language and spoken Canadian English, and a celebration of the diversity of cultures within the Ensemble, full of dreams, images, visions, and magic. This is NOT the first time that Deaf and hearing actors have worked together in the theatre. Many Deaf organizations and activists have been working for years to establish the rights of Deaf Artists and American Sign Language, to great success. But more must be done to include not only the Deaf community but all communities. The Tempest process was a complex, political, artistic, passionate, and inspired time together – Shakespeare living at the centre and driving us on. Reminding us, in his last work – with shadows of absurd humour – the power of love, the darkness that lies in every human heart; and how, when our hubris is released, it can destroy everything in its path and, in the end, those we love. Prepare yourself for the storm … – Josette Bushell-Mingo

the academy at the citadel For the past 10 years, the Citadel

Theatre and Banff Centre have had an incredible partnership, which offered actors from across the country the opportunity to train together and create a show. Daryl Cloran invited me to reimagine this program with the idea to make it more inclusive, more international, and centered around the theatre for tomorrow, all of which have been a focus for my Torontobased company, Why Not Theatre, for the past 12 years. We worked backwards; in selecting Josette as the director of The Tempest, we knew we would be working to design a training program for both hearing and Deaf actors. An exciting prospect, as integrated programs like the one we would create are rare. Because of the barrier of language and communication, we centered the training on physical theatre. It is a kind of work that is in the language we all share: that of the body. I invited master teachers from around the world to teach very physical ways of working and creating art. Our room was a revolution for Canadian theatre. A teaching staff primarily comprised of women leaders, master teachers with different abilities, different cultures, different perspectives. The difference in culture and perspective was matched by the participants and it was embraced. The program has now become something truly unique in the world of theatre. One that is truly international in its acceptance of multiple perspectives, abilities, and cultures, one that is truly innovative in its ability to create access as a tool for the avant-garde. It is a program that is rooted in traditions from the past, filled with contemporary values of the present, and unapologetically reimagining the theatre of the future – like the great art you are going to see tonight. Its unlike anything you’ve ever seen, and features new ways of hearing and seeing – a theatre for tomorrow. – Ravi Jain, Program Director

THE tempest 33

Cloran, whose enthusiasm for the work his theatre presents is surpassed only by his ability to make it all hang together, has his fingerprints all over the coming year.

July 20 - Aug. 11/19

“Ever since I arrived here, I’ve been impressed at what a fantastic place Edmonton is in the summer. We want to establish the Citadel as the hub of all that, but it stands empty during those months. So, we started looking for something that would keep that heart beating in the summer – something to fit between Shakespeare in the Park and The Fringe.” Noting the hold-over success of The Million Dollar Quartet a couple of seasons back, the theatre chose Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash. The season begins on September 21 with the musical version of The Color Purple. Alice Walker won the Pulitzer Prize for her book, which was made into a successful film by Steven Spielberg, and then into a stage musical. The epic tale chronicles the story of an African-American woman from the American South in the early years of the last century. “There’ll be 16 African-Canadian performers in the production, co-produced by the Royal Manitoba Theatre, and directed by our choreographer for Matilda, Kimberley Rampersad.”

Sep. 21 - Oct. 13/19

Earlier this season, Cloran found himself in London’s West End. He was there to take in the premiere of one of the Citadel’s greatest success stories

34 CITADEL THEATRE 2018/19 SEASON

2019/20 season – the debut on an international stage (now open on Broadway in New York) of Hadestown. Hadestown was the show that Cloran went to New York to persuade the producers to use the Citadel for the outof-town tryout of the show, giving our theatre a Canadian Premiere and a wildly successful run here in Edmonton. Hoping to repeat that success, he spoke to the producers of a glitzy show that was already a big hit in the West End. The production was called Six, and is based on the lives of the six wives of Henry VIII – but told from their point of view. The exuberant, celebratory musical was born at the Edinburgh Fringe, and its lively music (the sort of upbeat pop sound of Spice Girls) proved to be a very popular audience magnet. His flattery worked and this Broadway-bound production premieres on a Citadel stage on November 2nd. “These women are taking back their stories. They are only known because of their relationship with one man. This is female empowerment using pop music. It’s smart – and really funny.” At the end of November, Cloran will be directing a whole new take on a beloved classic – Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. “It’s a story that everyone knows and loves, and we want to make sure that all the things that were important in our previous production will remain.” So Cloran sat down to talk ideas with writer David van Belle – an

Alberta-based playwright, director, and actor. Says Cloran, “We were looking for something nostalgia-based that we could tap into and we kept coming back to the ‘40 and ‘50s. That was a period when many of today’s pop Christmas songs were written and movies such as Miracle on 42nd Street and It’s A Wonderful Life were released. We expect to continue to use our young people as part of the production and maintain our relationship with Edmonton’s Food Bank. And yes, it will be a lavish production.” Jan. 11 - Feb. 2/20

Feb. 15 - Mar. 15/20

On Jan 11, the Citadel will be presenting the Canadian Premiere of Cost of Living. Martyna Majok’s play was the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and examines relationships between disabled and abled persons. The highly regarded play will feature two disabled performers – one with cerebral palsy and another who is a quadriplegic. “We have had great success in recent years with cutting-edge contemporary drama (The Humans/Sweat). This is a modern classic,” observes Cloran. Last summer, Cloran, with considerable glee, cut a good deal out of Shakespeare’s As You Like It and filled the holes with music pulled from the Beatles oeuvre. “I got a real chuckle when just about every review began with something like ‘When I first heard about this concept, I

2019/20 season didn’t think I was going to like it. But I loved it!’” Vancouver audiences turned the show into the biggest hit in the history of Bard on the Beach. As You Like It opens on February 15. Cloran will direct. Todd Babiak’s The Garneau Block is probably high on the best seller list of books written about an Edmonton neighbourhood. “Not all novels make great plays, but I could see his characters on a stage and really felt there was something universal about the novel,” says Cloran. “I asked Belinda Cornish to write a draft, and by the end of the first act we were all in laughter and tears. She really found the heart of those characters – and a way to make the entire novel dramatic.” Who knew that a university area cul-de-sac would be filled with such colourful characters? There’s every possibility that, if we wait awhile, an outrageous British comedy company called Mischief Theatre might take over the world of theatre. When we were in London a couple of years ago, they had three shows running simultaneously in the West End. The shows just don’t stop coming at you and you will laugh ‘til it hurts. The Citadel will be presenting Peter Pan Goes Wrong, and the title is pretty well the plot. Again through Cloran’s efforts with the producers, it will be

a North American Premiere with an all-Canadian cast. The Citadel has borrowed one of their directors, Adam Meggido, to help export the madness. Turns out, Meggido is no stranger to Edmonton audiences – he has travelled to Edmonton frequently for Rapid Fire Theatre’s summer festival, Improvaganza.

Oct. 17 - 27/19

This year, the Rice Theatre returns for a season of plays. Says Cloran, “People are continuously telling me about great shows they saw over the years in the Rice. We have two 700-seat theatres and many shows demand a smaller audience to work. I want to stage innovative smaller productions, work with local performers, and move closer to our audiences. And the Rice is perfect for that.” There will be three shows in the new Highwire Season. Coming from Belgium, Fight Night is a daring new adventure in audience participation. Five performers will come out on stage and vie for your attention. Audience members will get a special voting device – and, after an initial pitch from the performers, one after the other, vote them off the stage.

Feb. 1 - 23/20

Apr. 18 - May 10/20

In February, John Ullyatt, who was the formidable Miss Trunchbull of Matilda, stars in a highly involving, emotion driven one-person show, Every Brilliant Thing. “One of the best scripts I’ve read in the past 10 years,” says Cloran of Duncan Macmillan’s heart wrenching, hilarious play. A boy makes up a list of things that will cheer up his mother after she has tried to kill herself. As the years flash by, it becomes apparent that the list might just help him save himself. And the season ends with After the Fire, a dark comedy by Edmonton playwright Matthew MacKenzie that dramatically explores the aftermath of the Fort McMurray fire. The play has been in the works for some time and just keeps getting better, says the unquenchable Daryl Cloran. “We want to help amplify the play’s reach and share it with the world.”
