message from the

Artistic Director

Welcome to the Canadian Premiere of The Humans! When I saw this play on Broadway, it was everything I wanted a night at the theatre to be: funny, heartbreaking, intelligent, and genuinely thrilling. I think it’s easy for audiences to relate to the context of this story – a fraught family holiday dinner where feelings are hurt and secrets are revealed – but what’s surprising about this script is how edge-of-your-seat captivating it is. Stephen Karam unwraps his story masterfully, with a number of heart-racing surprises and things that literally go bump in the night. Jackie Maxwell is one of Canada’s finest directors, and it is our great pleasure to have her at the helm of this production. Jackie was the Artistic Director of Canada’s Shaw Festival for 14 years, and in her very first season of programming, she took a chance on a young, emerging director and invited him to direct a production at Shaw (me!). And now, years later, I am incredibly honoured to welcome Jackie as a guest director as part of my first season of programming here at the Citadel. It is my pleasure to welcome our incredible cast: Ric Reid, Laurie Paton, Sara Farb, Alana Hawley Purvis, Richard Lee, and Edmonton’s own Maralyn Ryan; as well as designers Judith Bowden, Michael Walton, and Edmonton’s Matthew Skopyk. This is a co-production with our friends at Canadian Stage, and the production will play in Toronto after the run here at the Citadel. Many thanks to Matthew Jocelyn and Sherrie Johnson of Canadian Stage for such a fantastic partnership. Thanks so much for being a part of the Citadel family. Enjoy the show!

Daryl Cloran, Artistic Director

Students Club The Citadel Theatre believes that young people are integral to the artistic fabric of our community and we are committed to programming and initiatives that develop their creative voices and encourage their participation. The Maclab Students Club offers a unique glimpse into the world of professional theatre to a wide range of local junior and senior high school students. Prior to select performances of each of our Mainstage shows, Students Club members gather for a light supper and then participate in a highly engaging, interactive presentation with one of our region’s talented theatre artists, covering some aspect of theatre – from choreography to design, from stage combat to Shakespeare. Following the performance, students stay for an informative talkback with members of the production’s cast and crew. Prior to select performances of The Humans, students enjoyed an interactive workshop on auditioning with Jake Tkaczyk. Jake is a working actor with lots of audition experience, which he generously shared with the students. He recently graduated from the University of Alberta’s BFA Acting program and prior to that from Red Deer College’s Theatre Performance and Creation program. Jake has worked as an actor, director, creator, arts administrator, and educator across Alberta. Jake is currently working at Theatre Alberta as their Programs Associate, Jake Tkaczyk working on the upcoming Artstrek 2018! He also recently received the AFA Young Artist prize for his work as an educator and efforts in creating new devised pieces. Through the workshop, Jake helped the students to learn the basics of auditioning and how to embrace the excitement of opportunity with a positive mindset.

24 CITADEL THEATRE 2017/18 SEASON

There are several ways to describe Stephen Karam’s beautiful play – a family drama, a holiday comedy, a supernatural tale, a contemporary slice of life – all are somewhat accurate. For me, however, the title says it all. The Humans is about just that ... in this case, six specifically, whose indefatigable life force but sometimes flawed and less than robust humanity is exposed, tested, celebrated, and questioned during a 90-minute real time Thanksgiving gathering. The story takes place in a “new” duplex, proudly presented to the family by daughter Brigid, and we soon see all four areas in this two-level apartment in continual use. With no handy blackouts or offstage moments (apart from the odd specified bathroom break!) this means each character has to have a complete 90-minute onstage journey established, which interconnects at specific points with the other five characters’ equally complete journeys. Rehearsing this has been a gloriously brain-bending process for all of us – building upstairs scenes that must interact with parallel scenes downstairs, all while Brigid’s boyfriend prepares and then serves a full Thanksgiving dinner! While there have definitely been moments where we have felt almost giddily overwhelmed by the amount of detail and timing this all entails, we have only had to refer to the meticulous, brilliantly structured theatrical map created by Stephen Karam to get back on track. And now, as the actors leave their scripts behind and start to inhabit this complex story with confidence, it is becoming more and more clear that this map is so much more than that. It is also a profound, brave exploration and ultimate revelation of the human heart and the anxieties it must try to overcome… glance by glance, drink by drink, laugh by laugh, touch by touch, moment by moment by moment. – Jackie Maxwell

Recently, he has been playing to sold-out houses in his one-man show Empire of the Son and that is the show that will be up next in the Citadel’s The Club. It’s interesting to note that this extremely cosmopolitan man, who has spent much of the last of his 47 years travelling the globe, has based his presentation on one of the most intimate relationships – that of father and son. It wasn’t his first show about his father. His dad was born in Kagoshima, Japan. There was not much love in the family toward his people. Tetsuro’s grandfather had been tortured in China – not by the Chinese but by his own fanatical soldiers. Life in Japan had driven his father inward. The family happily moved to Canada in 1974. The man Tetsuro knew as a child was distant and remote – culturally and emotionally. He was often a ghostly presence in the home. “I knew him as a man of his generation and I don’t think we ever had a single conversation in my life,” the playwright remembers. His dad worked for BBC News for many years and was a fervent researcher. Tetsuro remembers him sitting at the supper table with earphones on his head preparing for the next day’s broadcast.

He was sort of an illusive benchmark I “felt I had to measure my life against.

But yet, his father had a profound influence on him. “He was sort of an illusive benchmark I felt I had to measure my life against.” In the early ‘90s, Tetsuro was preparing a spot for the Vancouver Fringe and thought his father would make an interesting subject. The show was well received but not by his reclusive father. The man didn’t comment himself but Tatsuro’s mother did – resoundingly. “You are making a living making fun of your father’s accent. You need to stop right now.” The dutiful son did exactly that – but always remembered how in all his stage efforts, the ones featuring his father won the most enthusiastic response from the audience. Twenty years later, he returned to that relationship as he researched material on his father for his PhD. “I was uncomfortable with that,” he remembers. “My father had already said not to use his story but I was two years into my degree and I couldn’t afford to stop and find something else.” His dad was, as Tetsuro remembers it, “A hermit hiding in the cave of his own mind.” So, heart in hand, he went to his father and said, “I want to share your story with the world. I want to publish it and maybe do a show based on my research.” His father was confused by what he was saying. He stood there blinking and trying to digest the information. Remembering his earlier efforts, he told his father, “I tried out some of your stories and people find them quite riveting. Do I have your permission to continue?” To his surprise, his father said, “Yeah!” “Perhaps,” Tetsuro continued, “You misunderstood. You did hear the question? Do I have your permission to share your story in public?” He

asked his mother if his father had understood him and she said “Yes.” His father finally replied, “If you tell my life story – then it will have had some meaning.” All along, because of his anti-social ways, his father was afraid that his son would follow the same lonely path. At that moment, Tetsuro realized something in himself. “I had been living myself in some kind of protracted adolescence – and that I didn’t want to die without telling his story. I suddenly realized that, through the act of telling his story, our story, he was also giving my life meaning.” And so the process began. The two had seldom spoken so Tetsuro came up with an idea. His father was an old broadcast hand so his son set up a broadcast situation – complete with mic and faux studio feel. He began a series of “interviews” with his father and the old man opened up to him. “I recorded 24 hours with him.” Those precious 24 hours are the basis for Empire of the Son.

you tell my life story – then it “Ifwill have had some meaning.”

Being a creative fellow, often out there on the periphery of artistic endeavour, Tetsuro was too canny just to stand in front of an audience and tell anecdotes. “I wanted it to look

nothing like any one-man show you’ve ever seen. One of the questions I began with, as I listened to the tapes, is how do we deepen the experience of listening. I wondered how to recreate the experience of ‘fire’ on a stage. Something so simple as sitting around a campfire and telling stories. As we watch something as elemental as a fire, our visual cortex is stimulated and we can travel somewhere deeper into ourselves.” What Tetsuro (and team) came up with is a long 12-foot platform that is filled with a series of miniatures. “I use my hand and fingers to bring the miniatures to life. For instance, when I have a fight with my father, I use two fingers and a tiny skateboard and we’re kicking dirt at each other and stomping on the ground. It’s actually quite convincing.” Tetsuro, taking advantage of his stage and television experience, places a camera behind the action and blows the picture up on a big rear screen. One effect that brings a gasp from the audience is an uncanny visual recreation of a nuclear explosion that is created with an aquarium and a syringe filled with heavy cream. The miniature is shot upside down by a camera and the resulting explosion, as seen on the big screen, “...is quite stunning.” “Often I find the audience isn’t looking at me at all but at what is unfolding in real time on the screen behind me,” observes the storyteller. Critics who have seen Tetsuro’s show from coast to coast have commented on the ingenious and effective multi-media effects he creates on stage. The show has been embraced by both critics and audiences. Reviewers have called it “exquisite” and

“painstakingly honest.” Its initial production in Vancouver filled the theatre and was such a success that it was brought back for another sold-out run. As one scribe summed up the performance at the National Arts Centre, “The show is a celebration of the extraordinary in the ordinary.” Of course, father and son conflicts have long formed the basis of stories in classic literature. Oedipus unknowingly kills his own father. Prince Hal causes his father much grief when he removes the crown before dear ol’ dad is even dead. Hamlet takes his grim marching orders from his father who returns from the grave to urge him on to revenge. Biff Loman remains bitterly estranged from his salesman father for 15 years after walking in and finding Pop in the midst of an affair. These stories are certainly tragic but Tetsuro’s tale is anything but that. Many critics have described the show as, “laugh out loud funny.” Tetsuro is happy to point that out to perspective audiences. “Yes, there are some highly emotional moments but I have worked to make sure that, even when I move into heavy territory, there is still laughter. I try to work it so the audience will experience both – so the experience will be funny and touching as well.” Empire of the Son endeavours to reach behind the seemingly simple and possibly arcane story of a relationship between a taciturn Japanese/Canadian father and his son to bring a universal tale to audiences. Says the playwright, “At the heart of it you do learn a lot about Japanese culture but I think everyone who sees it will find that it’s not just my story. A lot of people will see their own story on that stage.” Empire of the Son written and performed by Tetsuro Shigematsu, begins in The Club at the Citadel on January 31 and runs through February 18.
