message from the
Artistic Director Welcome to my first season of programming as Artistic Director of the Citadel. I am so happy to have
you here, and to share with you these fantastic productions. In South Africa, ubuntu refers to the interconnectedness of all humans and the belief that I am because you are. The spirit of ubuntu is at the heart of all the programming choices I made for this season. The productions all explore our intricate ties to one another, connecting us across the globe and in our own backyards. It is a season of stories that celebrate our shared humanity. And, as a proud new resident of Edmonton, it feels like the perfect way to start our relationship together. I hope you’ll join us for the whole season! Sincerely,
Daryl Cloran, Artistic Director
We wish to acknowledge that the land on which we gather is Treaty No. 6 territory and a traditional meeting ground and home of the First Nations, including both the treaty signatories – Cree, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Stony and Cree-Iroquois – as well as other Indigenous peoples, such as the Blackfoot and Métis, who occupied this land. We extend our appreciation for the opportunity to live, create and perform on this territory. 22 CITADEL THEATRE 2017/18 SEASON
Creating
It all began in 2004 when I travelled to South Africa.
I wanted to bring a troupe of Canadian actors to Cape Town to work collaboratively with South African actors to create a play. Mannie Manim, the Artistic Director of Cape Town’s Baxter Theatre Centre, was excited about the idea and agreed to work with us. I put plans together to return and start work on a production. In 2005, five members of Theatrefront’s ensemble travelled to Cape Town (three actors, a playwright, and myself as the director). We spent a month working at the Baxter with four fantastic South African actors, collectively creating an original production. We started with nothing. No script. No story. Our plan was to develop a common theatrical language, to find the meeting point between two cultures, to learn about ourselves while learning about people from the other side of the world, and to try to make a play. At the end of the month a South African audience got the first look at what would eventually become Ubuntu. Over the next few years, our South African partners came to Canada for three different development workshops. We improvised, we sang, we danced, we shared stories, we shared languages, we challenged each other’s assumptions about life and theatre and, ultimately, from this raw material, we made a play. The process was both exhausting and exhilarating. We lost many nights of sleep worrying that work visas were not going to come through on time. We had many moments of frustration. We also had incredible creative breakthroughs and discovered we were capable of opening ourselves to something uncharted and pretty wonderful. The production premiered at the Tarragon Theatre in Toronto in 2009. Over the following years, it played across Canada, from Halifax to Vancouver and many stops in between. I am so happy to finally bring Ubuntu to Edmonton. This production was created through four workshops in two countries over four years with over 20 different artists participating. It is a truly international creation that presents the universality of our struggles and the responsibility we all hold to reach out to each other – whether we live next door or across the ocean. Thanks so much for joining us. Enjoy the show! Sincerely,
Daryl Cloran, Artistic Director

We haven’t seen anything like this since Broadway descended on the theatre in 1985 for a huge production of Treasure Island (Pieces of 8). At that time, the New York producers under the prodding of Citadel founder Joe Shoctor, packed up their stars, sets, backup personnel, composers and music and decamped for Edmonton. Tommy Banks, who was Music Supervisor, remembers the mad house the Citadel became. Offices full to bursting. Famous stars and living Broadway legends walking the halls. A “phalanx of copyists making last minute changes to the score.” I had the opportunity to record on tape ace Broadway director Joe Layton engineering a scene starring George Hearn on the Citadel stage and even managed to persuade veteran Broadway composer Jule Styne (Gypsy) to go to the piano and sing one of the songs he wrote for the production. Well, Broadway is on its way back. Considering the cost of production and the great number of flops, Broadway producers have traditionally taken their embryonic productions elsewhere for the legendary out-of-town tryout. Citadel Artistic Director Daryl Cloran managed, by sheer western Canadian chutzpah and patience, to persuade them to mount their out-of-town preparation not in Boston, but in Edmonton. It proved to be the perfect storm for Cloran. Rachel Chavkin, the director (and American theatre’s current hottest talent), announced she was looking for a place far away from the pressures of New York – and Cloran happened to have a theatre that offered just that. And a reputation for putting together cracker-jack big musical productions.

it became this huge collaborative beast with a “Then life of its own and I had to keep feeding it.” Although the stars of the production will be imported, Cloran managed to get a commitment from the producers that the rest of the cast would be all-Canadian. After auditions for the producers, several from Edmonton made the cut. All of this is being embraced by Anaïs Mitchell, the composer/lyricist of Hadestown and the daughter of what she calls “former hippies.” (Hippies in Vermont? Who knew?). The show grew out of a simple childhood fascination with the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. Orpheus was an artist, musician, and poet. When Eurydice died, his love for her was so strong that he set out to perform an impossible feat – he journeyed to Hades to bring her back to the land of the living. The ending is tragic but somehow we realize that it had to be that way and Orpheus remains a hero – not because he succeeded but because he tried. Mitchell’s song became a travelling folk opera, then a concept album and now is on the verge of taking on the vagaries of Broadway. Says Mitchell: “At the beginning I wanted to see if it was possible! Then it became this huge collaborative beast with a life of its own and I had to keep feeding it.”

We corresponded by internet. (The following is compressed for clarity and space considerations.) You write in a folksy/blusey/southern country style. Since you were brought up in Vermont, how did that form of expression come to you? Our family did a lot of folk music, songwriter music, protest music and, as they say, blues and country are first cousins. Really it is all storytelling music. Along the way a lot of my collaborators had a jazz background and that had an influence in my writing. When (director) Rachel Chavkin entered your life, did you experience any thoughts of your vision being taken away from you? Hadestown has been something that ‘took a village.’ When I met Rachel I’d lived with the piece in different forms for a few years and it had always been a collaborative effort. In 2012, I saw Rachel’s production of The Great Comet (which just completed a hugely successful run on Broadway) and I was like ‘Who did that?’ It was this glorious, unusual, brilliantly staged immersive show. Rachel gets music, loves weirdness, boldness, politics, humour and delight. I found her someone I could trust and also be inspired by. Could you describe some of your shared creative process? Hadestown lives in a dreamscape-y, metaphorical world and wants to acquire fullness and depth without acquiring too much specificity. Rachel has such an original feel for staging, the

relationship of performers to the audience, the culture of the piece. It’s not a story that has a lot of stage directions, that is, at no point does our script ever say things like, ‘HADES enters upstage left, goes to the liquor cabinet downstage right and pours a drink.’ It’s a very wide-open and elemental show so all of Rachel’s choices in the visual realm speak boldly and beautifully. Under her guidance Hadestown has become a more generous act of storytelling than the music alone would allow. One of the stars who is coming here is Patrick Page. Page has a long history of starring in musicals and in leading Shakespearean roles. In Hadestown he exhibits a startling basso profundo. Did you re-write the role specifically for his talents? I must admit he eats those low notes for breakfast. But it was the inclusion of his higher register into the mix that was so surprisingly moving. I’ve learned so much about the character of HADES from Patrick – especially his strange, tender, wounded side. As for the actors, yes, indeed, across the board, I’ve found myself dreaming up words and notes to put in the mouths of the beautiful folks we’ve been so lucky to work with. Considering it originated over a decade ago, Hadestown is remarkably prescient. For instance, Hades asks, “why do we build the wall my children?” and the chorus dutifully replies, “we build the wall to keep us free. The wall keeps out the enemy. Because they want what we have got. That’s why we build the wall.”

I think the themes of Hadestown are ancient ones. There is nothing new about walls – walls between the rich and the poor. And leaders use the fear of “the other” to rally their base. I didn’t expect an American politician to come around and so closely verbalize that kind of ideology, but I don’t think it’s anything new. Depressions come and go. Industry wars with nature. Artists dream of a better world and sometimes almost succeed in creating it and still... can’t pay the rent. (That is not to suggest that Hadestown is another New York elite dramatic attack on the American president – Mitchell wrote that song long before Trump and his wall appeared on the horizon. Hadestown is a respectful but not reverent re-telling of a millennia-old story of love and loss.) (Spoiler alert: Hades allows Orpheus to lead Eurydice out of the underworld, but she must follow behind him. He must never look back. At the last moment, he does – and she is consigned forever to Hades.) The question of why Orpheus looks back has been debated for thousands of years. Why, at the very point of returning his love to life, does he turn and look back? That is probably the toughest question. And I’m not sure if we’ll ever know what the Greeks were getting at. In some translations, Orpheus becomes convinced that Hades has tricked him. In some, Eurydice calls his name and he turns. In some, he crosses the threshold into the living world and turns to share his joy with Eurydice, forgetting that she’s not yet out. I think that whatever is going on in his mind, it is the fact that Hades has contrived for him to be absolutely alone with himself – and that is his downfall. He’s an artist, a lover, and in this adaptation, a very social creature. He sings and the world sings back. But Hades understands that a man alone is a much weaker, more vulnerable creature than one in the company of others. And I think this speaks to the world today as well. What do you hope Hadestown will leave with audiences? I hope it speaks to the head, the heart and the body. I hope it feels celebratory even in its tragedy. I hope it uplifts people, artists, lovers, dreamers, try-ers. Hadestown previews on the Citadel’s Shoctor stage on November 11.
