message from the

Artistic Director Welcome to Undercover! Rebecca Northan is one of Canadian theatre’s true innovators. Rebecca calls her work “Spontaneous Theatre” — which is an inspired hybrid of structured theatre and improv, with a different audience member as the heart of the show each night. Rebecca’s first foray into spontaneous theatre, Blind Date, toured internationally and was such a hit at the Citadel that we presented it two seasons in a row! My favourite part of Rebecca’s work is the care she shows her volunteer cast member. She and her team know the bravery it takes to step on stage. They always set the audience member up for success, while we, the audience, get to cheer for the audience member who has joined the adventure and becomes the true hero of the show. I am very excited to present this brand-new production by Rebecca and her Spontaneous Theatre team. It’s my pleasure to welcome this incredible cast of improvisors to the Citadel, including some of Edmonton’s own (and Edmonton grown!) favourites. I know you’ll have a fantastic time trying to solve the murder, whether you’re in your seat, or on the stage — and I encourage you to come back another night to see how a different Detective tries to solve the crime! Thanks so much for joining us! Enjoy the show!

Daryl Cloran, Artistic Director

PS – We have recently announced our 2018-19 Season of programming, and it is fantastic! The season features the musicals Matilda and Once, as well as the Pulitzer Prize-winning Sweat and the World Premieres of The Candidate and The Party — two interconnected comedies. We hope you’ll join us for the entire incredible season!

We wish to acknowledge that the land on which we gather is Treaty No. 6 territory and a traditional meeting ground and home of the First Nations, including both the treaty signatories – Cree, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Stony and Cree-Iroquois – as well as other Indigenous peoples, such as the Blackfoot and Métis, who occupied this land. We extend our appreciation for the opportunity to live, create and perform on this territory. met in Calgary in 1995 as members of the cast of Shakespeare in the Park. They have been creative partners ever since. In the last 23 years, they have produced truncated Shakespeare plays in pubs, co-created several Fringe Shows, including Bruce’s smash-hit, This is Cancer, The MacBeth Show, Kung Fu Panties, and Close Enough for the Holidays, to name a few. As a duo, they partnered with Christian Goutsis to create Slipper, a modern retelling of Cinderella, and are currently adapting Zorro. Bruce and Rebecca, along with a few other members of the Spontaneous Theatre Ensemble are developing An Undiscovered Shakespeare with the Stratford Festival, and the Grand Theatre. Notes

Improvisation performances allow audiences a unique perspective, as you are invited to witness creation, process and product unfolding simultaneously. This means, in comparison to a scripted performance, things can be a bit rough around the edges, while at the same time, you (and the performers themselves) might be gifted with moments of such pure inspiration that we cannot help but laugh at the energy, enthusiasm and surprise that come with it. The Mystery genre is delightful because it asks you to participate from your seat. You lean forward and scan the action with more scrutiny than the average play. Each gesture, each choice, takes on a more weighted significance that in turn, gives the spontaneous actor a certain amount of power over you, their fellow actors, and the play itself. While Undercover has only one right answer, we discovered over the course of the run at the Tarragon Theatre in Toronto, and Vertigo Theatre in Calgary, that each of us, by subtly altering our characters, emotions, or the red-herrings offered within the confines of the narrative, could mislead our Rookie Detective into arresting the wrong suspect! Unfair? Perhaps. But, isn’t that exactly what a murderer would do? And so, there is a whole other game afoot inside of Undercover, one that you may pick up on if you see it more than once. We have never done Act Two the same way twice. No audience-member-turned-detective has solved it the same way twice, though roughly 35% have solved it correctly. You may see a performance in which the Rookie misses every clue, but has a good time playing with us. This might drive you crazy. We’re ok with that. What we’ve learned about this new play so far, is that it’s not so much about solving the mystery correctly, as it is about how much fun our volunteer has playing alongside us. Enjoy! Rebecca Northan

In its next production, which also happens to be about the Prince of Thieves, the Citadel will also go aerial — with the help of one of North America’s premier circus schools, Edmonton’s Firefly Theatre & Circus. It all began last year when Citadel artistic director Daryl Cloran was beginning his tenure in the post. He was casting about — getting to know various local theatre companies. He had a meeting with Mieko Ouchi — the award winning Edmonton playwright/filmmaker/ educator. She is also artistic director of Concrete Theatre, which produces plays for young audiences. Cloran was impressed enough to offer her a commission for a family show to end his season. They began to kick around ideas. As a child, Ouchi had been fascinated by classical children’s literature — in particular the legend of Robin Hood, the mythical Sherwood Forest archer who robbed from the rich and gave to the poor. Cloran was intrigued but wanted to give the legend a modern push. “Turn the story on its head. Let’s make Robin a woman and the Merry Men a collection of various ethnicities, sizes and sexes.” The director, long an advocate of physical theatre (recall his Ubuntu earlier this year), remembers, “The more we talked about it the more excited I became. We need swordfights and acrobatics.” To Ouchi it was appealing because, “To me as a diverse artist and the artistic director of a theatre for young people I liked the idea that kids come in all sizes and shapes. Race, culture and language — they all played a part in our discussions.”

The more we talked about it the more excited I became. We need swordfights and acrobatics.

A hero for our time and the Citadel went back 600 years to discover that she was a woman.

And so thoughts turned to Annie Dugan’s Firefly Theatre. Dugan is one of the few people who really ran away from home as a teenager to join the circus. She stayed with the art form, travelling around the country under the big top for many years before bringing her experience to Edmonton. In its 18-year existence, Dugan’s company has turned out legions of young people who juggle, twirl plates, wear red noses and fly. Some of those kids have gone on to professional careers — one of the major stars of a big Cirque du Soleil show that came through recently gave full credit for her success to the two years she studied here with Annie. Cloran was not interested in a small show to end his season. He wanted to go the other way. The entire mighty production arm of the Citadel was to be invoked — and an impressive budget. There would be spectacle — in the air and on the ground. He wanted an event families could share. “Of course, I said ‘YES!’,” enthused Dugan, caught up in Cloran’s persuasive passion.

They will have a very short time to develop a full range of physical skills.

Later, second thoughts began to creep in. “What am I getting myself into? I knew I had the experience, but...” For one thing, there was the problem of the equipment. Although not all the elements of circus would be involved, even the most basic aspects of the traditional art form require a lot of complex equipment with tackle, ropes, silks, straps, wires, gantries, counterbalances... To keep a production moving smoothly and have the performers appear effortless in the air is something on which Cirque du Soleil spends millions of dollars. Dugan reasoned. “I had to figure out the things we could carry off safely, quickly and easily.” She invited Cloran and Ouchi to a performance of her year-end show, Let There Be Height. She asked the director, writer, costume and set designer to spend a day or so at her Edmonton facility to see what the possibilities were. Then there is the level of training required for a full set of very specific talents. Dugan: “People do not become aerialists in a month. A swordfight taking place dangling in mid-air could be a dangerous proposition. You had to figure out each position the actors would have to be in4.75X3.75.pdf and what they would be doing.” Edmonton’s Kristi Hansen was a natural for the high 1 9/7/2017 8:58:37 AM

flying protagonist. Audiences over the years have watched her sing and dance and perform all sorts of physical theatre and she’s not at all inhibited by her prosthetic leg. Dugan knew of Katelyn McCulloch, both actor and aerialist, who was getting great reviews for her performance as the pirate Ben Gunn in the Stratford Festival’s production of Treasure Island. She would be Maid Marion. Other local members of the cast included actors Stephanie Wolfe and Kevin Ouellet, who had been studying for years with Firefly. Much of the rest of the 16 member cast was to be made up from participants from the Citadel/Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program that offers theatrical training for professionals who want to make a career in theatre. I spoke to Dugan by Bluetooth from her car while she was on her way to Banff to begin a month of training. The participants in Banff didn’t have an inkling of what they were in for. “They will have a very short time to develop a full range of physical skills. We have to train them how to use their feet — you literally have to learn to tie a knot in the silks with your feet. They’ll learn how to climb — they’ll be doing sit-ups, crunches, pushups and medicine ball exercises. In circus, you have to use your entire body — your upper body and your core are stabilizing you. Nothing too complicated because they also have to act and look graceful on top of all that. More is more when you’re doing ariels — just like less is more in the theatre.” Ouchi took notes during the meetings and changes would appear with the next version of script. The circus aspect was not to be a series of set pieces — like songs in a musical, but

an integral part throughout the production. Dugan remembers getting requests from the playwright to which her answer was, “You want WHAT??? I would have to scurry around trying to figure out how to make it happen.” Chuckles Ouchi, “She seldom said ‘No!’”

I love the idea of creating the kind of “show I only read about as a child. ” As the production developed, music was discussed as an element in the growing inventory that might be thrown into the show’s bubbling creative soup. The Silver Arrow wasn’t designed as a musical but as a story with music. Cloran: “As ideas for songs went by Mieko kept saying, ‘That sounds like Hawksley Workman.’” (Workman is a prolific Canadian singer/songwriter famed for a theatrical approach to his cabaret/pop catalogue. Something of a musical genius, twice he has performed sold-out concerts at the Citadel’s The Club.) Cloran finally said, “Alright, let’s phone him and see if he’s interested.” The avant-garde rock composer was very interested and wrote seven songs for the show. (You can hear So You Think You Know Robin Hood by Workman if you go to the Citadel’s website at www.citadeltheatre.com.) In fact, in a frenzy of inspiration, the creative trio (along with their production crew) was making it up as they went along. Ouchi: “It was to be staged in (and over) the Maclab’s thrust stage with its roughly three-storey distance from stage to cat walk. We had to fill it with action and adventure. We’re doing away with the fourth wall. This is a show for audiences brought up on television and special effects.” Says Cloran with a chuckle, “At one point, I had to step in and say, ‘OK, time for us to start figuring out how to make these big ideas actually happen on stage.’” The result: The Silver Arrow: The Untold Story of Robin Hood will open on April 21 on the Maclab stage. Enthuses Dugan, “There’ll be swordfighting in the the air and all over the stage — live music and an amazing adaptation of a familiar story that makes it really timely. I’m really excited to be part of this.” Ouchi: “I love the idea of creating a new kind of hero for our world. I love the idea of creating the kind of show I only read about as a child. I hope The Silver Arrow will induce audiences to go, ‘WOW!’”
