STUDENTS CLUB The Maclab Enterprises Students Club is a Citadel Theatre/Robbins Academy program that offers a unique glimpse into the world of professional theatre to a wide range of junior and senior high school students from Edmonton and surrounding areas.

Frankenstein – Andrew Kushnir, Tracy Penner, Sarah Gale, Nick Green. Designer: Bretta Gerecke. Photo: Jackson Hinton

On the first three Tuesday and Wednesday evenings of each of our mainstage productions, Students Club members enjoy a small reception before the show and then participate in a highly engaging, interactive presentation, featuring special guests from Edmonton’s talented theatre community. Following the performance there is a talkback session with members of the production’s cast and crew. Prior to Students Club performances, the students are joined by a special guest from the industry. Our most recent guest was Amy Kucharek, a multi-talented theatre artist who works collaboratively in design, production management, scenic painting, and props building. Amy has been a key artistic contributor at Catalyst Theatre over the past 10 years and she shared an inside view of the company’s history and creation process in addition to a demonstration of the use of props and costumes. Amy has a diploma in visual arts and is a graduate of the Theatre Production program at Grant MacEwan University. Here at the Citadel she most recently worked on props for last season’s Make Mine Love and currently serves as the principal design instructor at the Citadel’s Foote Theatre School. To become a part of Students Club for our 50th Anniversary season, or for more information about the program, please contact Shirley Tran at groupsales@citadeltheatre.com or (780) 428-2127.

DONOR PROFILE edward and nikki lazar

How long have you been attending productions at the Citadel Theatre?

Of all the productions you have seen, which has been your favourite and why?

We moved to Edmonton from Montreal in 1994 as new university graduates continuing our studies – we’ve always loved the theatre. So we would attend as many productions as we could. In 1999 we were able to become season ticket holders. We would go to the theatre for “date night” while having very young babies at home!

Some of the more edgy productions have always been our favourites – ones with a moral message. The one man show Bigger Than Jesus from the 2005/2006 season was one of our absolute favourites. It was so profound in how it portrayed the idiocracy/ misunderstandings of religion.

Why do you choose to donate to the Citadel? We believe that the arts are an integral part of a vibrant city and love to support the local venues. As our children have grown up we have introduced them to the love of theatre as well.

Has donating to the Citadel changed or impacted your perspective on the Arts? It was never a question for us to donate to the Citadel. In this advanced computer age we need to ensure the next generation can appreciate more traditional methods of learning and entertainment.

Do you think the Arts are an integral part of a thriving community? A community can’t survive without the arts – all of them. Music, theatre and the visual arts. 24 VIGILANTE

Musicals are also favourites of ours – and are real crowd pleasers! We have seen so many good productions so we have really supported the Citadel through thick and thin. It’s nice to see some more sophisticated plays being brought to the Citadel.

Which production are you looking forward to this season? Over the years the quality of the productions has matured and grown along with the growth of the city. It’s been very interesting and exciting to see and we are excited to see all the new productions this year.

Vigilante

is inspired by the story of James and Johannah Donnelly, Irish immigrants who settled in Canada in the mid-nineteenth century. Their story has attracted many writers and historians over the years, but the facts remain elusive. What actually happened is sketchy and contradictory. There have been as many different tellings of their tale as there have been writers who’ve told it. While it’s tempting to want to establish exactly what happened to the Donnellys, in the end there is no authoritative version of their story. But is there ever an authoritative version of anyone’s story? An event experienced by twenty different people will have as many different variations. Who’s to say which one is the truth? It’s been said that history’s told by the victors, a reminder that what we call “history” is vulnerable to the biases of those who present it as fact. One thing that’s certain is that we’ll never really know what happened to the Donnellys, or why it happened, or what they were actually like as people. As such, the Donnellys of this play are unapologetically imaginary. Their story is closer to a dream of what might have happened than a representation of “the factual” Donnellys – a “what if”, inspired by the fragments of historical fact that we have at our disposal: what if there were such a thing as ghosts? And what if those ghosts could speak? The story they might tell would be as much a love story as it would be a story of hate, a story told by those who’ve never had the chance to speak – the ghosts of the Donnelly boys themselves – or at least an imaginary version of them. I hope that the play you’re about to watch taps into something essential about the Donnellys, something that transcends time, and brings fresh meaning to their story nearly two hundred years after it first happened. Jonathan Christenson

“It’s the best play that Tom Stoppard has ever written,” unequivocally states Citadel artistic director Bob Baker of the playwright’s Arcadia. “They say that Stoppard plays are short on emotion but I disagree. He’s just a very smart writer with complex ideas and I think audiences sometimes get stuck in that – forgetting that his plays are based on real, human emotions.

Arcadia has a lot of big ideas – sort of a mystery without being mystifying. And there is a love story that threads all the way through. The play takes place in a reading room in one of the great houses of England and the time is split between present day and 200 years ago. The challenges of complex language and ideas, the two time periods and the wide range of the characters, makes this a perfect piece for the participants of the Citadel/Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program.” At 77, Sir Tom Stoppard is still ruggedly handsome. He’s revered as one of the great playwrights of our time and is approachable, witty and genuinely interested in theatre. When asked to talk about himself, he once observed, “A writer ought to be the best possible source about their work but the writing instinct doesn’t come out of selfexamination. That part of yourself in your work is expressed willy-nilly without your cooperation, motivation or collusion.” Tom Stoppard was born Tomas Straussler in Czechoslovakia in 1937. Being Jewish, his family fled the Nazi invasion and, after years wandering as refugees, and surviving the death of his father in a Japanese bomber attack, found themselves in Darjeeling, India. After the war, his mother married Kenneth Stoppard, an army major, and the family moved to England. Kenneth Stoppard was every inch the military man. “He read very little,”

observes Stoppard dryly. Stoppard now refers to that period as, “I was coming on well as an honorary Englishman.” That may explain why the writer always felt a little “different” from his English hosts and quite probably had a profound effect on his ability to comment on the society in which he found himself. At 17, Stoppard left school to go into journalism and even took a stab at theatre criticism. “I wasn’t very good,” he modestly remembers. Still questing for self-expression, he began writing short radio plays for BBC radio. “It was the golden age of British Theatre and everyone wanted to write a play.” In 1964, he was sent to a “mansion” in Germany for 5 months by the Ford foundation. He emerged (after several further revisions) with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. A hugely successful production at the Old Vic gave him international success. With typical self-deprecating humour, when asked what the play was about he replied, “It’s about making me very rich.” He followed that with Jumpers (1972), a murder mystery with philosophical undertones and Travesties (1974) which placed Lenin, Joyce and others together in World War I. The Real Thing (1982) was a turning point for Stoppard. It was a love story that (suggested the critics) had a genuine beating heart at the centre. It also was a huge success for him and made a star of Jeremy Irons.

Stoppard is president of the London Library – where he finds much of his research. But does he write there? Well, no. He’s a smoker (and embarrassed about it) but finds, “I definitely associate having a pen in my hand with having an ashtray just out of eye line.” He writes, in longhand, at his desk in Chelsea Harbour, where he retreated when he found the life in London too seductive of his time. Stoppard says, “I essentially write about things that please me, interest me. I only find out later if it works as theatre or not.” He writes from beginning to end, “So the first thing I write is the first scene of the play” – which he scribbles with a stylish silver Caran d’Arche fountain pen made in Geneva. (He recently told an interviewer that he no longer writes with a quill pen because his last goose had died.). He doesn’t use a computer because he goes back, over and over again, writing in changes and making notes to himself. Then he dictates the play to his secretary – ad-libbing in the stage directions. After 40 years of writing, the problem remains the same, “You can’t start writing until you know what you are doing and you don’t know what you are doing until you start writing. I still have to resist the false intuition that I need to know as much as possible in advance. The essential thing is to know as little as possible. Ideally, when things fall out well, you shouldn’t feel clever, you should feel lucky.”

“I essentially write about things that please me, interest me. I only find out later if it works as theatre or not.”

If, perhaps, you have never seen a Stoppard play, you may be more familiar with his work than you think. No effete ivory tower dramatist, Stoppard not only acknowledges (and even applauds) popular culture but has incorporated his interest into his plays. (His latest radio play for the BBC was called Darkside written to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Pink Floyd’s album, Dark Side of the Moon.) You may remember his accepting an Academy Award for co-writing Shakespeare in Love in 1999. He is highly regarded as a “polisher” in the movie business and his (uncredited) re-writes have graced many popular films. “Polish... It’s such a strange word for what one does. I ‘interfered’ with George (Lucas’) script in a mild way.” He’s referring to his work on Lucas’ Star Wars Episode III. (Given Stoppard’s lifetime track record – we’ll forgive him for that one.) Steven Spielberg credited Stoppard with “writing almost every line of dialogue for Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.” Spielberg is a great fan of collaboration. The director once pulled Stoppard out of the shower because he was having problems with a scene he was in the act of shooting for Schindler’s List. Stoppard dictated his thoughts to Spielberg on the phone while standing naked and dripping wet in the hallway of his home. The changes appeared in the final version of the film. Stoppard has contributed dialogue (“I do about one a year for Hollywood”) to The Bourne Legacy and Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow. He’s an unabashed movie fan. He says, “The second reason I do it is that I love to work with people I admire,” and then adds more pragmatically, “The first reason, of course, is that it overpays.”

A couple of years back, the BBC produced a Stoppard penned television mini-series, Parade’s End. It starred a pre-Sherlock Benedict Cumberbatch. Because Stoppard compresses so many ideas into Arcadia, to go any deeper into the plot (which combines iterated algorithms and the chaos theory with 18th century gardening) would only serve to confuse. Like all of Stoppard’s plays it is meant to be seen on a stage where it unfolds with clarity. Famously a fan of theatre’s collaborative process he says, “I rely heavily on an actor’s performance to help individualize a character.” The playwright begins Arcadia (which means “paradise”), with his pen deep in the Oscar Wilde inkwell, and with what might be called “an English drawing-room farce.” The fact that the discussion ruminates on the death of the universe and the meaning of life doesn’t make it any less witty. Ratcheting about in various time zones, we find ourselves in 1809 with a group of characters in the Baronial Ridley House, coping with the wrenching change of classicism to romanticism and whose life becomes of great interest to the future inhabitants of the same dwelling. The stories alternate, the conversation and ideas reverberating through time, until at the end we find ourselves in one of the great metaphorical and theatrical of endings – the two epochs appear on stage at the same time dancing in a stately waltz. They swirl past each other, unseen and unseeable, but yet profoundly aware of the other. Despite his dabbling in the pop arts, Stoppard’s first love is the stage. He says, “Theatre is not just a childhood playground but it can be a recreation for people who like to stretch their minds.” Tom Wood’s production of Arcadia previews on the Shoctor Stage of the Citadel on March 21.
