students club The Citadel Theatre believes that young people are integral to the artistic fabric of our community. As such, we are committed to programming and initiatives that develop their creative voices and encourage their participation. The Maclab Students Club is such a program – one that offers a unique glimpse into the world of professional theatre to a wide range of junior and senior high school students from Edmonton and surrounding areas. On the first three Tuesdays and Wednesdays of our season’s main stage productions, Students Club members gather to enjoy a small reception before the show and then participate in a highly engaging, interactive presentation from one of our region’s talented theatre artists. Following the performance, students are invited to stay for an informative talkback session with members of the production’s cast and crew. Prior to West Side Story Students Club performances, the students enjoyed an interactive workshop on stage combat in theatre with Janine Hodder or Alex D. Mackie. Both guests are very experienced stage combat directors and teachers. Janine is a certified actor combatant with Fight Directors Canada and sits on their Board of Directors. Even though she is a mother of four, this summer she is continuing her training to be an Internationally Certified Level 3 Actor Combatant. Alex attended the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York, and over the last ten years he has performed in numerous productions and has become affiliated with stage combat organizations in Canada, the United States, and England. Through the workshop the students were able to learn the basics of stage combat, and now better understand how fight directors build narratives and suspense through choreography.

If you would like to become part of Students Club, or to learn more about the program, please contact Shirley Tran, Group Sales, at 780.428.2127 or groupsales@citadeltheatre.com.

is a training partnership between the Citadel Theatre and The Banff Centre

AT THE CITADEL, we do not just put on plays, we build theatre for today, tomorrow and

beyond. The Academy at the Citadel Theatre is the most comprehensive program for creative development in professional theatre in Canada. Offering programs for both emerging and established theatre professionals, The Academy encompasses four specialized programs under one unique umbrella:

THE CITADEL/BANFF CENTRE PROFESSIONAL THEATRE PROGRAM is now in its eighth year. This Program, conceived by Citadel Theatre Artistic Director Bob Baker, and under the direction of Program Director James MacDonald, provides performers a distinct alternative to other professional theatre training programs in North America. Our curriculum focuses on the development of advanced skills for professional actors and directors, properly equipping them with the necessary tools to pursue and sustain successful careers. The Citadel/Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program has continued to grow and thrive with the ongoing support of • The Eldon and Anne Foote Fund of the Edmonton Community Foundation with the stewardship of David Bentley • The RBC Foundation We would also like to acknowledge the generosity and vision of the original champions of the Program • The Eldon and Anne Foote Fund of the Edmonton Community Foundation • The John and Barbara Poole Family Fund • Canadian Western Bank and the Pechet Family And subsequent support from • Government of Alberta PLAY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM With the continued commitment to produce world premières on our stages, we offer resources and professional expertise to assist playwrights in developing their work to its greatest potential. Over the last decade the Citadel has developed and produced 20 World Premieres, 14 of which have been subsequently produced elsewhere, taking the name of the Citadel and Edmonton around the world. Our audiences have not only experienced the inaugural productions of these plays but have also had the unique opportunity to participate in their development. THE CITADEL THEATRE YOUNG COMPANIES is an advanced training and mentorship program for aspiring artists between the ages of 16-21 who are serious about pursuing post-secondary education and a career in theatre. This year-long program offers specialized training in Acting, Musical Theatre, Playwriting and Theatre Production. THE ELDON AND ANNE FOOTE THEATRE SCHOOL (FTS) is the oldest and largest theatre school in Edmonton. Since 1966 we have provided year round classes for all ages and experience levels, teaching physical, technical and creative skills in both acting and musical theatre. Over 1,000 students annually are taught by our faculty of 25 local theatre professionals. west side story 39

A Theatre forAll Seasons part 6

the

future written by Colin MacLean

The imposing bust of Citadel founder Joe Shoctor on the second floor of the Citadel gazes over the theatre he built. It has been a long, fifty-year road from that original theatre shoehorned into a stone Salvation Army Citadel to the vibrant theatrical institution where each season over 100,000 patrons attend shows.

In a recent interview Bob Baker, who is stepping down after an illustrious seventeen seasons as Artistic Director, summed up his years in words that might easily have been framed by such distinguished predecessors as John Neville and Robin Phillips, “I always felt a responsibility to the patrons who bought the tickets. We have to keep earning the right to have people come and feel really great about the experience. You have to listen to the audience.” Under Baker the Citadel has laid down a set of tracks that avoid the pitfalls that yawn before other theatrical companies. Observed acclaimed British director Richard Eyre (Hamlet/Mary Poppins) to a conference investigating why audiences were failing in England, “We have to acknowledge that theatre companies have a finite life span and that few manage to sustain artistic ardour beyond seven years.” After the notable success of the fiftieth-year celebrations of last season, and the promise of Baker’s audience-pleasing new season, that canard can be laid to rest. We can regard the Citadel’s achievements as a pretty impressive catalogue continuously suffused with the stuff of Eyre’s “artistic ardour.” The Citadel/Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program is Baker’s creation and continuing love. “I think the formation of the Academy is the thing I am most proud of. Theatre is an ephemeral art. We remember shows like Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Cabaret, Beauty and the Beast and so on. But those memories are a pole shadow of the live experience and are a fading legacy. In Banff we’re developing new artists that will have a future in our industry and create a lasting legacy.” Another problem facing Canadian theatre is that few young actors get cast in marquee roles before their thirties. As Holger Syme of the University of Toronto put it in a recent blog, “Theatre needs youth, on stage and in the audience. Theatre is an art of the now and an art that constantly has to reinvent itself. It needs the spark of youth.” I suppose if you want to go back far enough, you can point out that, as a precocious youth still shy of 20 years, Brent Carver (Evangeline) used to regularly be featured at the old Citadel, leading up to his memorable role of Romeo launching the “new” Citadel building. But, in regards to the Citadel’s view of young performers, some very lucky Edmontonians get a rare chance to see tomorrow’s stars in full flight. The cast of West Side Story, who has just completed the Citadel/Banff Centre Program, got together and in the best tradition of “let’s put on a show” gave an invited audience in The Club a demonstration of why

Canadian theatre probably won’t have to worry about the lack of young people on Canadian stages. It was a memorable night of big voices, charismatic performances and committed youth. Wait ‘till you catch young Eva Tavares as Maria in tonight’s performance of West Side Story. Says Penny Ritco, the Citadel’s Executive Director and long-time ying to Baker’s yang, “Somewhere Bob came up with the realization that we could become a facility that can provide a home for other types of organizations – like Catalyst and Rapid Fire Theatre. They have proved to be a perfect fit for us.” Baker: “These companies are all bringing new audiences into the theatre. The audiences begin to attend other Citadel performances and suddenly it’s no longer the elite Brick Fortress because the drawbridge is down and the Citadel is open for business. That’s why the big sign out in front was so important. We’re saying, ‘Look world – we’re not that institution any more.’” The city around the theatre is exploding and the Citadel has been changing with it – over 100 organizations took advantage of the Citadel’s facilities last year. Ritco: “I can see more people coming to the building because it’s, well, inviting. The building is a gold mine for the community and we’ve blown the doors off and opened it up.” And then there’s The Club and the Beyond the Stage season, in the intimate space that was once the Rice Theatre. Created out of a financial challenge, and generally featuring cabaretstyle performance, it has taken on a vibrant life of its own. Baker: “The Club has established its own identity. It’s getting a momentum all of its own. I think it led to some reinvention around here.” Observes Anne Nothof, author/editor and self-described theatre addict, “I think the Citadel has brought a world of theatre to Edmonton – and did it courageously and ambitiously. It helped us to understand who we are. If it can maintain that kind of balance – of supporting the local and telling community stories while enabling us to see into a wider world of theatre and art, I have great hopes for its future.” For 50 years the Citadel has been a curious place. A wizard’s cave of wonders where the unexplainable, fantastic, tragic and comic are all routine. If you listen today you can still hear echoes of George and Martha arguing about the child that never was. Big Daddy bawls of “mendacity.” On an Easter morn fifteen-thousand Canadians throw themselves at a previously impenetrable wall of German soldiers at Vimy. Willy once again drives that tired, red 1928 Chevy to Hartford. Juliet is united in death with her Romeo, the wind changes to the East and Mary Poppins is blown into Number 17 Cherry Tree Lane. Scrooge finds the joy of Christmas, Dr. Frank-N-Furter walks with Tony Kushner’s Angels and Don Quixote walks with God. Bob Baker: “I think I’ve given my successor something to work with. We have momentum.” And echoing something that Joe Shoctor might have said fifty years ago, “My advice to the next Artistic Director – Be Bold!” west side story 41

Somewhat cheekily the Citadel asks, “r u curious?”

when suggesting “u” take a look at the shiny new season of plays for next year. Well, if your answer is that you’re ready to rofl (roll on the floor laughing) or looking for something more serious – then here is a season that is designed fye (for your entertainment). iag (It’s all good). hms (home made smiley). To help us chart the depths of next year’s season we have enlisted the help of the man who, for seventeen years, set the course – retiring Citadel Artistic Director Bob Baker. Baker is maintaining an active relationship with the institution he guided for all those productive years, while embarking onto new theatrical waters. Says Baker, who knows about these things, “I think the coming season is one of the best ever.” The season begins with a splendid coup. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is a fully-fledged, high octane hit. Baker (and co-producers – the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre) mounted a massive effort to get the much-in-demand rights to the Tony Awardwinning, audience-pleasing hit. “We hounded the producers – phoning at least once every week,” says Baker. They finally wore them down and the work’s Canadian premiere is September 17 at the Citadel. This coming-of-age story is about an autistic teenager. He’s an amateur detective and a mathematical genius. We join him deep in his mind as he works his way through a deductive and emotional process.

44 50TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON 2015/16

“I think the coming season is one of the best ever.” On one momentous day, December 4, 1956, four of rock’s greatest stars met in the Memphis-based, Sun recording studios of visionary producer Sam Phillips. The four were Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash. All were at the very beginning of their careers. The juke box musical, Million Dollar Quartet, was inspired by that event. The show was a world-wide hit and toured extensively. The reason it will land here (in a Citadel production) is once again due to Baker’s diligence. “I saw the show years ago and loved it. There was every likelihood that the show would tour to the Jubilee Auditorium, but it never did. So I kept after them and finally got the rights.” Million Dollar Quartet may play fast and loose with the actual event but the result, with songs like “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “Folsom Prison Blues” and “Hound Dog,” rocks. It all ends in a driving take on the concert that never was, but, “Good Golly Miss Molly,” would have been a barn burner. Edmonton’s Ted Dykstra, no stranger to rock ‘n’ roll himself and creator of the Citadel’s Evangeline, will direct. Three weeks after Christmas, we get a late present – as the Pulitzer Prize winning drama called Disgraced opens on the mainstage.

Disgraced is another of those shows that was performed in a number of smaller venues while on an ever-building arc that finally took it to Broadway and international acclaim. It centres on a dinner party with four people of different backgrounds. Their lively discussion turns to comment on politics and religion and the heat is quickly turned up. Racial and ethnic prejudices that secretly persist in all of us surface.

You will love Crazy For You. Why not? Most everyone who has seen it tends to gush. Even New York Times reviewer Frank Rich couldn’t contain himself, burbling, “It’s a riotously entertaining show which uncorked the American musical’s classic blend of music, laughter, dancing, sentiment and showmanship.” Enthuses Baker, “It’s a big show and we’ve wanted to do it a few times but the chance never came up.” Crazy For You is Ken Ludwig’s cotton candy confection with cowboys, show girls, mysterious rich producers and a small western town saved by “puttin’ on a show.” It’s a glitzy showcase for the songs of George and Ira Gershwin with tunes like “I Got Rhythm,” “Someone to Watch Over Me,” “Shall We Dance” and many more. We all know the story of Peter Pan – the boy who wouldn’t grow up. But did you know there is a captivating back-story of how Peter found

r u curious? himself battling pirates, protecting mermaids and flying through the air? It’s called Peter and the Starcatcher and was a recent hit on Broadway. The show is spectacular but exploits the ancient theatrical troupe of a bunch of tattered players who get together and, with the help of a few found props – ropes, ladders, toy boats, household appliances and the like – create a detailed fantasy world. The show also demands that audiences use their imagination to unfold a compelling world of adventure while generating unending laughs. It also takes full advantage of theatre space – not just on the stage but high above it as well. The cunningly creative James MacDonald will direct this family entertainment. Baker will return to direct Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility. You will no doubt remember the Citadel world premiere of Austen’s Pride and Prejudice back in 2008. That memorable production brought together the young performers who attended the Citadel/Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program, ace Austen adapter Tom Wood and director Bob Baker. Those three combustible elements will join forces again for Sense and Sensibility. Austen wrote the book in 1795 when she was but 19 years old. Even then, she demonstrated the maturity

and perception that was to make her one of the most read authors in the English speaking world. Pride and Prejudice amply demonstrated how very theatrical the works of Jane Austen can be and promises much anticipation for this new production. Now that’s the season and it’s certainly a crowd pleaser. But, as the man on the old television commercials used to say, “...but wait. There’s more.”

jan 17 - feb 5/17

nov 26 - dec 23/16

There are a number of add-ons that are not part of the regular season but promise compelling theatre. Take Bittergirl – the musical. One afternoon last summer, Baker took a few hours off in Charlottetown where he was readying Evangeline for its Edmonton production. He took in the modest but hugely entertaining production – one of the hits of the summer festival. He was quite entranced – seeing the possibility of a great vehicle for the Citadel’s The Club. The impressively adaptable tale was first written as a book by authors Alison Lawrence and Mary Francis Moore. It followed the separate tales of two Canadian women and their journeys from rose-dappled first love to darkest devastation as they were unceremoniously dumped by their men. The two were joined by Annabel Simmons, another dumpee, to turn the book into a run-away hit as a comic play. The trio added a juke-box full of (mostly) girl-based doo wop ‘50’s hits (“Be My Baby”/”Where Did Our Love Go?”) to run an ironic counterpoint to the “heartbreakingly funny” show – which proved to be theatrical catnip to Toronto, New York and Charlottetown audiences. It begins October 4. Jonathan Christenson and (designer) Bretta Gerecke’s Catalyst Theatre, now a member of the Citadel family, is presenting a new production in January called Fortune Falls. The list of major hits spawned by this innovative company (Frankenstein/Nevermore/ Hunchback/Vigilante) will probably generate enough buzz to make this new presentation a must-see. The show is set in an Ontario small town that is devastated when the American parent company of the local chocolate manufacturer pulls the plug on the branch. For many years, the factory has been the sole employer in the area. Christenson, who writes the words, music and book for all his productions, has said the show considers “the way we as Canadians piggyback on the American dream” and the pain that generates when the dream evaporates.

And yes, the enduring Baker/Wood seasonal classic, A Christmas Carol will be back for yet another year. Baker observes that the production in each of the last two years has attracted more patrons than ever before. Add to that the burgeoning use of The Club for everything from one-person shows to large cast cabarets, and you have a prolific season fit for the Citadel, the vibrant beating heart of a city reinventing itself.

message from

the artistic director,

For 17 years I have had the honour of holding the position of Artistic Director of the Citadel Theatre. It has been an alternately exhilarating and exhausting adventure. I am incredibly proud of the sustained high level of quality theatre art that we have created and presented. I have been inspired and challenged by our gifted, innovative artists and technical team, our dedicated staff and our supportive and engaged Boards of Directors and Governors. I am also profoundly appreciative of you – our generous patrons, sponsors, donors, foundations and orders of government for your belief that our work contributes to the quality of life in our community. I am also deeply grateful for your meaningful contributions. The Citadel has benefitted from the generosity of this community for over 50 years and that has encouraged us to engage our imaginations, dream big and work hard to deserve your trust and respect. Live theatre is an ephemeral art form. It exists in the moment that it is being experienced and thereafter becomes a memory that, naturally, fades with time. One of our proudest accomplishments is the formation of the Academy at the Citadel. Our Academy is recognized as Canada’s foremost program for creative development in theatre arts. The development of new work and the training of the next generation of theatre artists is a vibrant and lasting legacy and does much to ensure an exciting future for theatre locally, nationally, and internationally. Thanks to all of you for being fundamental to our success story for the last 50 years and for supporting my successor in her/his stewardship of our beloved Citadel Theatre.

Bob Baker, Artistic Director 70 50TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON 2015/16

As we draw to a close our 50th season and move into the 51st, we are keenly aware that our environment is shifting and changing around us. The next fifty years will challenge us to think differently, boldly and creatively about our relationship to our patrons, our donors and our community as a whole. We hope that you will be keen to be a part of this and we look forward to a conversation with you. Finally, we want to acknowledge the enormous contribution made by Bob Baker as Artistic Director for the last 17 years.
