All for one and F
ew have made as much of a positive impact on Edmonton or had as much fun doing so as Jean de La Bruyère, Sandy Mactaggart and Greg Greenough. The Citadel’s Maclab Theatre is one of their obvious legacies, but their impact extends from apartment buildings in Yellowknife to hotels in Jasper, from the Kinsmen Field House to the Boys and Girls Club, from Edmonton House to the Edmonton Symphony, from the Canadian Olympic Committee to the University of Alberta, from the Loyal Edmonton Regiment to the Edmonton Community Foundation, from the Eskimos to the Lois Hole Hospital. A Frenchman and a Scot, Jean and Sandy immigrated to Edmonton in 1954 intending to launch a restaurant. When that concept didn’t materialize, they turned to construction. Though they built one of their first houses on someone else’s lot, Maclab Enterprises soon prospered. Jean was said to be the accelerator of the company and Sandy the brakes. “Had Jean been solely in charge,” Sandy once said, “we would have made and lost our shirts a dozen times. Had it been left to me, we would still be agonizing about breaking ground on our first project.” The company’s initial motto was “one of these days we have to get organized”. Fortunately, within a few years, Jean and Sandy were joined by Greg Greenough, a Saskatchewan born CA with remarkable managerial skills. Jean once introduced the trio: “Sandy’s the ‘Mac’, I’m the ‘Lab,’ and Greg is the ‘Enterprises.’” The three embraced life as few people have. Building from Yellowknife to Lethbridge and from Victoria to Saskatoon, hosting elegant parties and Northern adventures, flying airplanes and hot air balloons, sailing around the world, scuba diving in the Red Sea, racing jet boats on the North Saskatchewan and cars across North America, investing in gold mines, oil wells, record labels and Broadway plays, helping create the Citadel, the Symphony and others, traveling the globe and bringing the best of what they discovered back to Alberta, breaking only a few bones along the way, there was little they didn’t attempt and explore. Eventually they even opened a restaurant.
chivalry, friendship, adventure,
one for all Most importantly, the three developed a remarkable partnership built on trust, respect and celebration of their differences and individual talents. “Even though we would initially disagree on just about everything, we would eventually argue it out. One of the reasons it worked is that we never used the word ‘I’,” Greg Greenough has said, “it was always ‘we’”. Combining Jean’s energy and entrepreneurial flair, Sandy’s prudence and foresight and Greg’s financial and organizational skills, they built a company that rode the boom of the 60’s and 70’s, withstood the shock of the early 1980’s and prospers today. Jean died in 1991, Sandy recently retired to a warmer climate and Greg remains a vital force within the community. This world premiere of The Three Musketeers is an opportunity to celebrate them. A descendant of musketeers, Jean would embrace the theme; a founder of the Citadel, Sandy would celebrate this ambitious venture; a Governor of the theatre, Greg will revel in a successful production. Most of all, Jean, Sandy and Greg would recognize much of themselves in this celebration of chivalry, friendship, adventure, courage, wit, imagination and trust. All of us stand on the shoulders of giants who precede us. Jean, Sandy, and Greg are three such giants; those who are part of Maclab today, like those who benefit from the many institutions that they built, owe the three their gratitude. We thank and celebrate them, their accomplishments and their friendship.

Maclab Enterprises
Students Club
The Maclab Enterprises Students Club is a Citadel Theatre/Robbins Academy program
that offers a unique opportunity for junior and senior high school students from Edmonton and surrounding areas to experience a backstage look into the many challenges and remarkable artistry that is involved in creating a piece of professional theatre. On the first three Tuesdays and Wednesdays during the run of the Landmark Classic Homes Mainstage productions, Students Club members gather prior to the performance, enjoy refreshments, and are provided a half hour pre-show presentation designed to stimulate their minds, ignite their imaginations and foster a more personal connection to the inner workings of professional theatre. Following each performance Student’s Club members are also invited to stay for a lively post-show discussion involving members of the creative team, cast and crew. Prior to performances of The Three Musketeers, Students Club Members will be introduced to the artistry of creating a fight for the stage. Beyond an introduction to the breathtaking techniques of swordsmanship, this preshow is designed to explore the ways stage combat builds on the story and characters of a play and extends these seamlessly into the action onstage. For information about joining the Students Club for the final shows of the season please contact Shar Powell, Booking Coordinator at 428-2127. For individual students who are interested in joining please e-mail Shar at spowell@citadeltheatre.com and leave your name, contact information and the name of the school you attend.

about the
Play
A young Frenchman leaves his countryside home to join the illustrious
Musketeers of Paris. There, he is swept into high adventure filled with seduction, swordplay and brotherhood. All for one and one for all! Alexandre Dumas’ story of 17th century France is one that has stood the test of time for its excitement, romance and brotherhood, and this World Premiere of a new adaptation by Tom Wood continues that tradition in a bold, theatrical way.
Les Trois Mousquetaires was written in 1844, at a time when 17th century France was celebrated for its romanticism and rising power in Europe, an era that would ultimately lead to the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars. The Three Musketeers novel was so successful that Dumas wrote two more “d’Artagnan Romances”, Twenty Years Later and The Vicomte of Bragelonne: Ten Years Later, and the story has simply grown since, adapted into children’s books, Hollywood blockbusters and even video games. The Three Musketeers is one of two plays this year featuring participants of the Citadel/Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program. Each year, fourteen professional actors and actresses converge in Banff for classes and workshops in acting, singing, voice, movement, dance, stage combat, text and script analysis, led by a faculty of Canadian theatre’s best. After four weeks in Banff, the Program moves to the Citadel to rehearse a Mainstage production showcasing their talents – this year, they are performing in two. The Three Musketeers and Little Women: The Broadway Musical were chosen in part because of the great roles for men and women they both offer, but also for the opportunity to build camaraderie, brotherhood and sisterhood both on- and off-stage.

that the real identity of the mysterious American author A.M. Bernard was revealed. Bernard wrote in the late 1800’s and was responsible for some thirty pulp fiction thrillers – sensational blood and thunder epics filled with murder most foul, wildeyed revolutionaries, cross dressers and opium addicts – popular stuff in those years. The books generated a small but loyal readership.

foreshadowing with Colin MacLean Turns out though, that Bernard was really that most family oriented of American writers, Louisa May Alcott. Alcott was the daughter of the well-known transcendentalist and educator, Benson Alcott. The Alcotts lived in a New England world of genteel poverty but moved in the presence of gods. Friends of the family included Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne and the great American naturalist, Henry David Thoreau. Benson Alcott approached Thomas Niles, a New York publisher, about a book he wanted to publish. Niles, however, wanted to talk about Benson’s daughter who had established a minor reputation as a writer. He suggested Louisa write a book about young girls – he felt something like that would have a wide appeal. At first, Louisa wasn’t enthusiastic. Still pursuing her dream of becoming a successful writer of novels of derring-do, she took the project on – later to write in a letter, “I plod away although I don’t enjoy this kind of thing.” Alcott based her story on the childhood she spent with her three sisters, writing a thinly veiled picture of herself as the tomboy and aspiring writer, Jo. Other family members included the pretentious Amy, romantic Meg, the kind-hearted Beth and their beloved mother, Marmee. They were a poor but committed family with a doctor father away caring for wounded Union Army soldiers in the American Civil War.
”Jo March is the quintessential musical theatre hero. ...”
The publisher agreed with her when she sent the first dozen chapters in and said she found them “dull.” However, he turned them over to his young niece, Lillie, who enjoyed them. The completed manuscript was shown to several girls who found them “splendid.”

The book, published in 1869 and called Little Women, was an immediate commercial and critical smash and, with a number of sequels that followed, made the family very rich. Rumbled critic G.K. Chesterton, “Alcott anticipated realism by twenty or thirty years.” As well as her writing, Louisa was a protofeminist – battling for, among other things, the abolition of slavery. The success of the evergreen Little Women has continued for more than a hundred and forty years. The book, and its successors, have been published over and over again. There have been a number of plays based on the work and several movies. (The first was released in1913, the next in 1933 with Katherine Hepburn, a 1949 version starred Elizabeth Taylor and in 1994, a later version featured Winona Ryder and Susan Sarandon.) In 2005, Little Women came to Broadway as a musical with a book by Allan Knee, lyrics by Mindi Dickenson and music by Jason Howland. Knee’s idea was to intercut the melodramatic stories that Alcott feverishly churned out in her attic studio with the tactile, familial warmth of the real life that surrounded the author. The musical opened on Broadway in January of that year, (starring Sutton Foster and Maureen McGovern), ran for a respectable 137 performances and toured for years afterward. Said the Village Voice reviewer, “Knee’s script offers long passages of astutely condensed Alcott and Jason Howland’s pleasant music inventively pulls contemporary shapes out of period waltzes, polkas and quadrilles.” Observed the Broadway director Susan Shulman, “Jo March is the quintessential musical theatre hero. She wants everything, loves too passionately, speaks too loudly and is fiercely determined not to disappear without a trace.”

foreshadowing with Colin MacLean Citadel Artistic Director Bob Baker saw the show in New York and thought, with its warmth and easy accessibility, it would make a great addition to this year’s season. It also served another purpose. It would be a natural fit as a vehicle for the Citadel/Banff Centre’s joint Professional Training Program, an intensive, advanced 19 week residency program for established theatre practitioners. The curriculum of the program comprises master classes in acting, singing, voice, movement, dance, stage combat, text and script analysis by a faculty of some of Canada’s leading theatre artists.
”I was attracted by the pursuit of artistic expression and the search for inspiration.”
The program begins at the Banff Centre and then moves to the Citadel where the participants are featured in the season ender at the theatre. You will remember with some enthusiasm, I’m sure, the heart and humanity of the first two productions under the program, Pride and Prejudice and last year’s As You Like It.
The program has been a resounding success, providing Citadel patrons with the kind of esprit de company that can only come when a group of actors have moved beyond the limits of usual rehearsal times and developed as a creative community. Remember how lived-in the roles seemed in Pride and Prejudice? It has been a success for the performers as well. Observes Baker, “We have found the young professionals are freshly inspired to commit to the art and the audience gets committed, passionate performances. The past participants have been

given opportunities that would not have been possible without their connection to the program. They are now playing major roles at Stratford, Shaw, the National Arts Centre and at the Citadel. The credit on their resumes is opening doors.”
”The play is about the family bond and creative inspiration.”
The selection of a final show for the program is not easy. Says Baker, “Finding one play that offers substantial challenges to fourteen individuals is very difficult.” But the director overcame the difficulties of the selection process by, well, doubling them. This year the participants will be performing two plays in repertoire: tonight’s frisky The Three Musketeers and Little Women, the Broadway Musical. Why The Three Musketeers? “There is a sense of adventure, drama, intrigue and the passionate commitment to honour and friendship in the tale. The love stories are consuming as well.” And Little Women, the Broadway Musical? “I was attracted by the pursuit of artistic expression and the search for inspiration.” Ringing words but regular Citadel patrons will know that Baker (who is directing both productions) is at his best when finding the real person behind the words. One only has to look at his decade long work at the Citadel to find that kind of vindication. Remember A Christmas Carol, Grease and West Side Story? These are all well-worn, oft produced shows that were given a whole new life in superlative Citadel productions. Baker promises to bring that same sensibility to Little Women, the Broadway Musical. When I asked him what his “concept” for the musical was, he bristled a bit. “I don’t like to apply concepts to any of my work. The play is

foreshadowing with Colin MacLean about the family bond and creative inspiration. I look to the creator’s intent and attempt to bring truth, honesty and passion – to create engaging storytelling. I am looking for the heart of the story that Alcott wrote and trying to recreate the vibrancy, ambitions, heartbreaks the March family underwent. Whether it is a musical or not, the characters must be given dignity and truth. I look for the pain in each character and identify their needs. And the obstacles to those needs. And then encourage the actor to commit to surpassing those obstacles. The audience is then an empathetic spectator on the journey.” The journey to find the heart of the March family begins on the Citadel stage on April 30th.

about our
WARDROBE Department
When plays are chosen for the season and the
designers are hired, the director and costume designer meet and costumes are discussed. The designer then creates preliminary renderings which then are approved by the director. At this time, Patsy Thomas, our Head of Wardrobe, costs the renderings. Depending on the era the show is set in, Patsy and her team determine how many of the required costumes can be pulled from stock, and how many alterations have to be made; how many of the costumes have to be built by our talented crew and the cost of doing so, how many can be borrowed from another theatre company and how many have to be purchased. After doing all this, depending on the budget, some costumes may have to be rethought. Once final approval is received, the work begins in earnest. For the costumes that we built for this show, we shopped for fabrics, trims, hats, stock supplies, etc. Some of this was done on-line as well. In order to fit everyone in their look for the show, 3 full weeks of fittings took place and there were a total of 15 people who worked on what you see before you. These include cutters, stitchers, tailors, fabricators, a milliner and someone who takes care of boots and shoes. They have worked approximately 2,500 hours to make the amazing costumes you see on the 29 cast members in The Three Musketeers.
