Maclab Enterprises

Students Club

The Maclab Enterprises Students Club is a Citadel Theatre/Robbins Academy program

that offers a unique opportunity for junior and senior high school students from Edmonton and surrounding areas to experience a backstage look into the many challenges and remarkable artistry that is involved in creating a piece of professional theatre. On the first three Tuesdays and Wednesdays during the run of the Landmark Classic Homes Mainstage productions, Students Club members gather prior to the performance, enjoy refreshments, and are provided a half hour pre-show presentation designed to stimulate their minds, ignite their imaginations and foster a more personal connection to the inner workings of professional theatre. Following each performance Student’s Club members are also invited to stay for a lively post-show discussion involving members of the creative team, cast and crew. Prior to performances of Hunchback, Students Club Members will be introduced to the transformative process of Scenic Art, and experience the magic of the multitalented Michelle Dias whose work has appeared on the Citadel stages for more then a decade. Taking advantage of the intimate confines of the Rice Theatre she will demonstrate some of the breathtaking techniques and brilliant inventiveness this area of work so often requires. For information about joining the Students Club for the final shows of the season please contact Shar Powell, Booking Coordinator at 428-2127. For individual students who are interested in joining please e-mail Shar at spowell@citadeltheatre.com and leave your name, contact information and the name of the school you attend.

Play Development at the Citadel

Play Development is one of the five creative development programs of the Robbins Academy

and is supported in part by the Robbins Foundation Canada and by the BMO Financial Group. We are proud to have commissioned Catalyst Theatre’s Hunchback through this program. The Citadel Theatre recognizes the importance of play development in ensuring a vital theatrical culture. In addition to our mandate to produce contemporary and classical plays and musicals, we also made a commitment to commission, develop and produce new work and over the last twelve years have premiered more than 20 new plays. We embrace plays that resonate with our public, contain large relevant themes and possess a strong and bold narrative. Play Development at the Citadel is forging new relationships with emerging playwrights and strengthening existing ones with established and celebrated writers whom we have endorsed, encouraged and produced in the past: Tom Wood, Vern Thiessen, Ronnie Burkett, Colleen Murphy and Kristen Thompson. We have development partnerships with several companies including Edmonton’s Catalyst Theatre, Ronnie Burkett Theatre of Marionettes, and Toronto theatres such as Factory, Crow’s and Tarragon. These partnerships are necessary if we are to give our audiences the best in new and innovative voices that make up Canadian playwriting. We’re also here to nurture, encourage, support and launch new writers and their plays, especially the vital and creative local playwrights in our own community. Our Playwrights’ Unit is an important first step in that direction. Led by this year’s Guest Playwright, Colleen Murphy (2007 Governor General Award winner for The December Man), the Unit includes six Edmonton writers. We are very proud and excited to include in this group: Belinda Cornish, Collin Doyle, Andy Garland, Beth Graham, Jon Lachlan Stewart and Cat Walsh. All of these writers are presently working on plays intended for a Citadel stage. In intensive peer-to-peer sessions, these writers bravely share their work and anxieties without the burden of judgment and criticism. We understand the importance of proper germination and are firm about instilling that in the playwright’s development. It’s a step by step process. We all recognize the risks in presenting new work but it is this same risk which produces excitement, anticipation and “birth”.

This June, a select audience will hear these new plays for the first time. But it doesn’t end there. We want a wider public – so next year the Citadel will launch its First Look Series. This initiative will feature each of the plays from the Unit sometime throughout the year in a unique workshop presentation. Play Development also extends to the Citadel’s Young Companies, another of the Robbins Academy programs. Under the watchful eye of Heather Inglis, four young dramatists-in-training between the ages of 16 and 21 have the unique guidance of several prominent writers, among them Tom Wood, Kevin Kerr, Ken Brown, Conni Massing, Greg MacArthur, Colleen Murphy and Mieko Ouchi. They were also privileged to meet with Nobel Laureate, poet and playwright, Derek Walcott. We hope that early nurturing of young playwrights will prove to be a good investment in the future of Canadian Theatre. In all of our work, we strive to embody the Academy’s motto: Stamina, Strength and Agility of the Body, Mind and Heart. Director of Play Development Brian Dooley 28

Catalyst Theatre

Under the leadership of Artistic Director Jonathan Christenson, and with the ongoing collaboration of Resident Designer Bretta Gerecke, Edmonton’s Catalyst Theatre operates under a mandate to create new, original works. The company has become known for its bold and distinctive aesthetic and has been invited to bring its productions to the UK, across Canada, Australia and the USA. These have included The House of Pootsie Plunket, The Blue Orphan and, more recently, Frankenstein and Nevermore, The Imaginary Life and Mysterious Death of Edgar Allan Poe. In the past year Catalyst Theatre productions have been presented by Canadian Stage in Toronto, London’s Barbican Theatre and the London International Festival of Theatre, The New Victory Theater in New York, Vertigo Mystery Theatre and the High Performance Rodeo in Calgary and Keyano Theatre in Fort McMurray. Catalyst has also been seen in recent years at Glasgow’s Tron Theatre and the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh, the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, Toronto’s Winter Garden Theatre, The Max Bell Theatre in Calgary (co-presented by Theatre Calgary and The High Performance Rodeo), Saskatoon’s Persephone Theatre, The Yukon Arts Centre and as part of Vancouver’s 2010 Cultural Olympiad at the Arts Club Theatre co-presented by The Vancouver East Cultural Centre and the PuSh Festival. Catalyst has previously had work commissioned by the Magnetic North Theatre Festival and the Luminato Festival (Toronto). Keyano Theatre in Fort McMurray has been a development partner on the company’s last three productions. Since 1996 Catalyst has been resident in a converted CN warehouse in Edmonton’s Old Strathcona district. The company is proud to call Edmonton home and grateful for its many opportunities to expose audiences on tour to Edmonton-made work and artists.

The Three Musketeers is a rip roaring, bodice ripping tale of high adventure. It has fascinated readers since it was published back in 1840 making Dumas, arguably, the most popular French author of all time.

foreshadowing with Colin MacLean Dumas placed his novel (and inevitable sequels) two hundred years before his own more mundane era. Viewed through the rose-coloured prism of time, most Frenchmen of the early 1800’s regarded the 17th century as an epoch of high adventure. The monarchy was becoming increasingly powerful (The Sun King and all that) and there were wars to be fought, intrigues instituted and a single heroic individual could prove his valour and rise above his station. Someone like d’Artagnan, for example. Dumas’ swashbuckling hotheaded hero was born in humble circumstance in Gascony. On his way to becoming France’s most feared swordsman, he tried to engage Cardinal Richelieu’s man, the evil Comte de Rochfort, and the three musketeers Athos, Porthos and Aramis in single combat. And all on the same day. Instead of skewering the provincial upstart, the musketeers were so impressed by his skill and bravado, they adopted him. The four joined forces to defend the tattered honour of the Queen and in doing so found themselves at odds with the scheming Cardinal. But even more deadly was the infamous Countess de Winter, known as Milady (and a spy for the Cardinal), who used her beauty as a tool to seduce and destroy men. Along the way there are sword fights to be fought, maidens to be rescued and seductions to be conducted. The first movie based on the characters was made in 1898 and some 200 more have followed. In 1921, a dashing Douglas Fairbanks added the role to his Robin Hood, Count of Monte Cristo and Zorro. An unfortunate MGM version was released in 1948 starring a non-singing, non-

dancing Gene Kelly (and Lana Turner). The Disney factory produced a substantial variation in 1993 starring a pre Two and a Half Men, Charlie Sheen and a pre 24, Keifer Sutherland. Even Mickey, Goofy and Donald had a run at the characters. The best film version was the rollicking 1973 Richard Lester blockbuster. Lester was the British director who harnessed the anarchic energy and humour of the Beatles in A Hard Day’s Night and Help! (In fact, if you want to amaze your friends with your knowledge of arcane movie trivia – Lester offered the lead roles to the Fab Four – but, by that time, they were unreachable Gods of the Universe). Lester was a great fan of the movies’ silent comics, like Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton, and used their harem-scarem, visually chaotic approach in his film. The cast included Charlton Heston, Richard Chamberlain, Oliver Reed, Michael York and Faye Dunaway. Much of the movie was made up as it went along and when it was over, Lester discovered he had shot miles of footage. So he clipped it in two and released Part II a year later. Both were big hits. (He also neglected to pay his cast for the second release on the premise they had already been paid for making a movie on The Three Musketeers. They sued and won). The venerable property has also found its way to the stage as an opera (several operas in fact), a ballet and many dramatic adaptations of variable quality. When artistic director Bob Baker decided to include the work in his season, he turned to the Citadel’s

...somewhere along the way he turns each adaptation into something wondrously new and highly theatrical.

foreshadowing with Colin MacLean resident adaptor, Tom Wood. Wood adds The Musketeers to his long and distinguished list of recreations of classic works that includes such Citadel world premieres as Pride and Prejudice, Peter Pan, and the annual Christmas phenomenon, A Christmas Carol. For his adaptations, Wood has a simple rule. “I take my cue from the master’s work,” says the playwright. “Dickens, Chekhov, Dumas: it is no great sacrifice to try and turn these great writers’ ideas and vision into a play for our stage.” Wood is being modest because somewhere along the way he turns each adaptation into something wondrously new and highly theatrical.

“...It is essential (and half the fun) to get to know the characters as heroes, friends and enemies first.”

He says the moment when The Three Musketeers leapt off the page for him came when he was reading the second book (Twenty Years After) in the Musketeer trilogy. “I was taken with the adventure and swashbuckle of the first novel but it was when Dumas got dark and dangerous and began to discuss the pain and secrets of the characters that I became really hooked. My dilemma came from wanting to get immediately to the depth in the second book but you can’t begin the story half-way through. The 17th century was such a thrilling time and Dumas provides unforgettable characters, honour, love, brotherly loyalty, cutthroat politics and cut-throat duelling. It is essential (and half the fun) to get to know the characters as heroes, friends and enemies first.”

“The main problem, of course, is what to leave in and what to take out. It’s a hefty work, this one. More difficult even than Pride and Prejudice. But I had to be brutal, and at the same time, leave enough to be dramatically satisfying for the actors and the audience. I have read too many adaptations of great novels that skimp on the whole so you feel that it is a meal of just appetizers – a Cole’s Notes version.” Dumas lived a life that was itself the stuff of novels. His grandfather was a French nobleman and soldier – his grandmother a Creole of French/African descent. Dumas was subject to racism for his black heritage all his life. His father was a General in Napoleon’s army and, although he was killed when Alexandre was a boy, the youngster was brought up with tales of adventure and derring-do. Like his character, d’Artagnan, Dumas grew up impoverished but, as a young man, became a successful writer. His works were in such demand that he developed a production line of writers (mostly uncredited) who churned out the stuff under the watchful eye of the master. One after the other the books came – The Count of Monte Cristo, The Man in the Iron Mask, novels, newspaper and magazine articles, pamphlets and plays. One of his books offended the Czar and he was summarily banned from Russia despite his enormous popularity there. But then, Dumas was always falling out of favour with someone important and fleeing for his life. In 1851, he fled to Brussels after alienating Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte (and, it must be said, his vast number of creditors). He fought for Victor Emmanuel II, endeavouring to unite Italy. Despite his success, he was always broke – mostly because of high living and a string of expensive mistresses he kept in the grand manner. (Critics have noted that fidelity has very little value in d’Artagnan’s world and, indeed, the morality of our quartet of heroes is, um, situational.)

foreshadowing with Colin MacLean The Three Musketeers is more than just a great romance. It is also a great historical novel. Part of the success of the novel is Dumas’ clever intertwining of real (Richelieu/Queen Anne/ Buckingham) and fictional characters giving both a genuine humanity with complex motives, abilities and faults – much in the way that David Fincher did in his Oscar-nominated film The Social Network. “Dumas’ portrayal of (King) Louis and Richelieu is fractured history but great storytelling,” says Wood. This April at the Citadel, history has a face and form in the person of the gallant d’Artagnan. And a splendid one it is. The Three Musketeers will be produced as a companion piece to the Citadel’s season ender Little Women, The Broadway Musical. Both will feature actors from the Citadel/Banff Centre’s Professional Theatre Program. We’ll have more on that in a later column. In the meantime, strap on your codpiece, lace up your chemise and prepare for an evening of derring-do. En Garde.

about our

audio Department

A

s the Head of Audio for The Citadel Theatre, I oversee both the preparation and running of Audio in all the different venues here at The Citadel Theatre. Each show has its own unique requirements and challenges, ranging from small shows where only the speaking needs reinforcement, to larger shows with sound effects to play back on top of the dialogue, right up to the large musicals that have not only speaking and sound effects, but singing and music, chorus, bands or full orchestras. I have a select group of sound operators who are specialized in the knowledge of how sound works and reacts in a room under different conditions, each with their own talents and abilities. It is also my responsibility to do specialized recordings in and around the building. Whether that is the cell phone announcement at the beginning of the show (usually asking a helpful member of our office staff to read the announcement for the recording), or some of the voice overs and sound cues that run during the shows themselves, there have been many times that we need to record something specific. In other cases we will consult our very extensive sound library, consisting of over 20,000 different sound effects. We work closely with the set and costume designers, as many times microphones will have to be hidden on an actor’s costume. Other times both microphones and speakers can be hidden on the set, usually in tight and awkward places to get at. We then need to place that microphone on the actor themselves, and troubleshoot any problems that might come up during the show. We work with the Designers on speaker placements for specific sound effects and program how the show will run on each different system. After that we begin rehearsals with the Director and Stage Managers, deciding when each sound will happen, and what volume it will be at. It is an extensive process, with many long days to make it just right before the audience gets to hear the final product.
