about the

Little Women is the story of the March sisters: brassy, tomboy-like, aspiring

writer Jo, romantic Meg, pretentious Amy, and kind-hearted Beth, learning lessons big and small while their father is away serving as a war-time chaplain in 1800s Virginia. Louisa May Alcott wrote the novel Little Women or, Margaret, Jo, Elizabeth and Amy in her own family home in Massachusetts. The novel was published in two volumes in 1868 and 1869, and is loosely based on the author’s own childhood experiences, growing up with her own three sisters. The novel’s success spurred on sequels by Alcott, and the book has since become an American classic, adapted in many forms from television to film to the Broadway musical presented here at the Citadel. The story’s success is widely attributed to the realistic and heartwarming story of these young sisters, as we follow them over a few years as they come of age. A strong sense of sisterhood in Little Women, not unlike the camaraderie and brotherhood of The Three Musketeers, was a perfect fit for the participants of the Citadel/Banff Centre Professional Theatre Company. This romantic, spirited musical version of Louisa May Alcott’s masterpiece originally ran on Broadway in 2005 before touring 30 cities in the continental United States. The music and adaptation of the novel by Jason Howland, Mindi Dickstein and Allan Knee are very faithful to the original literature, focusing on romance, tragedy and the rising independence of the March sisters.

Maclab Enterprises The Maclab Enterprises Students Club is a Citadel Theatre/Robbins Academy program that

offers a unique opportunity for junior and senior high school students from Edmonton and surrounding areas to experience a backstage look into the many challenges and remarkable artistry that is involved in creating a piece of professional theatre. On the first three Tuesdays and Wednesdays during the run of the Landmark Classic Homes Mainstage productions, Students Club members gather prior to the performance, enjoy refreshments, and are provided a half hour pre-show presentation designed to stimulate their minds, ignite their imaginations and foster a more personal connection to the inner workings of professional theatre. Following each performance Student’s Club members are also invited to stay for a lively postshow discussion involving members of the creative team, cast and crew. To cap off Students Club for the 2010/2011 Season, prior to performances of Little Women, the Broadway Musical, Students Club Members will be treated to a behind-the-scenes glimpse of all that makes the Shoctor Theatre unique. Exploring this space will put into context many of the topics that have been touched on in presentations earlier in the Season by discovering how they impact the work done within the physical space itself.

This will include exploration of the artistic and technical aspects of the stage, a visit to the rehearsal hall, scenic art department, production shop and backstage dressing and Green room areas. This presentation will realize and emphasize the many steps required to bring each individual production to life. For information about joining the Students Club for the 2011/2012 season please contact Shar Powell, Booking Coordinator at 428-2127. For individual students who are interested in joining please e-mail Shar at spowell@citadeltheatre.com and leave your name, contact information and the name of the school you attend.

or many years, the idea that there might be such a thing as a Canadian “star” was almost an embarrassment. Given our much vaunted national modesty, performers from kd lang to Leslie Nielsen had to go to the United States to be validated.

foreshadowing with Colin MacLean Which, strangely enough, leads us to the Mainstage season of the Citadel next year. Looking down the list of performers, one is struck by how many of them are so well known locally. Our own stars. Names that will attract an audience just because they are in a play. I don’t know about you, but I’d go see Tom Wood read from the yellow pages. Tom will be starring in one of the great stage roles of all time next year – Willie Loman in Death of a Salesman. As his son Biff, is another Edmonton actor who, through many stellar performances has built up a substantial audience – John Ullyatt. We have seen the actor in so many guises a fair observation might be, just who is John Ullyatt anyway? Tony in West Side Story. Danny in Grease. Billy Bishop. The MC in Cabaret. He’s been a bird on the side of a building and a human fountain. He’s even played Tom Wood’s son before in Cat On A Hot Tin Roof. “He’s a chameleon who changes with each performance,” observes Citadel Artistic Director Bob Baker. “A character actor with leading man good looks – a comedian who can do drama.” Or take Julien Arnold, who has been around for quite some time but found incredible resonance with audiences with his heartbreakingly human portrayal of Bob Cratchit in A Christmas Carol. Next year, he will be playing three roles at the Citadel including the Narrator in The Rocky Horror Show, Bob Cratchit and the prime comic role of Bottom the Weaver in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Let me mention a couple of others who have developed a loyal following in Edmonton. They may not be based here but they have found their own audiences. Fiona Reid has given us a number of memorable evenings in the Citadel capped off by this year’s devouring matriarch, Violet, in Tracy Lett’s August: Osage County. She’s back next year in God of Carnage.

LANDMARK CLASSIC MAINSTAGE Series And Réjean Cournoyer, who was a conflicted Beast in Beauty and the Beast, a deadly Sweeney Todd and the heartthrob, Mr. Darcy, in Pride and Prejudice. The stars, local and otherwise but all Canadian, twinkle next year in the Citadel’s Mainstage. Bob Baker tosses a challenging season at us next year. “I think our season subscribers love theatre. I think they are saying ‘bring it on – give everything a chance.’ We’ll get people to see (The) ‘Rocky’ (Horror Show) who don’t normally come because they think theatre is stuffy and not for them. We’ll get people to come because it is a fun show and they’ll have a rockin’ good time. And maybe they’ll stay to see God of Carnage. We have to maintain our audiences but if we hope to succeed in these tough times, we’ve got to bring in new patrons too.” “I don’t think I’ve ever seen Death of a Salesman staged,” says Baker of the season opener. “A few months ago I read it again and was struck by how much it deserves its reputation as one of the greatest plays ever written. It is a powerful, relevant, visionary work and I can’t wait to see what Tom (Wood) is going to do with it.” Baker will be directing. Opening night will be September 24. You noted, of course, the words Rocky Horror Show, uh, creeping into this piece. Yes, the highly controversial long-running British comedy Sep 24 - Oct 16/11 stage musical is coming to the Citadel with your invitation to join us in Transexual Transylvania. John Ullyatt, who is no stranger to transexual roles, will return as Dr. Frank N. Furter. It will be interesting to see if the sexual roundelay that so horrified

foreshadowing with Colin MacLean (and delighted) audiences and critics back in 1973 will pack the same kind of psychosexual punch this time around. “We are also staging an event,” says Baker. “We are inviting audiences to come dressed up and participate in the show. You can do anything you want as long as you don’t stain the seats.” You are invited to “do the time warp again” beginning on October 29th. Oct 29 - Nov 20/11

Feb 11 - Mar 4/12

Next will come two modern day classics of theatre – each something of a coup for the Citadel. Mark Rothko was a prickly fellow with fierce opinions. He was an abstract expressionist, his paintings were colourful, monolithic and non-representational. Think Jackson Pollock. In 1958, he accepted a commission for a series of murals for New York’s Four Seasons restaurant. John Logan’s play Red places the artist in his studios with his assistant Ken – who begins to question why an artist of Rothko’s stature would accept such a commercial project. Rather than a dry academic discussion of “What is art?” and “What are the responsibilities of the artist?”, an impassioned, often frenzied and sensually grounded discussion ensues that has found a ready audience in both London and New York. The play won a Tony and a Drama Desk Award. Red will be a co-production between the Citadel, the Vancouver Playhouse and the Canadian Stage Company. Opening February 11.

LANDMARK CLASSIC MAINSTAGE Series The 2009 Tony Award winning play was Yasmina Reza’s God of Carnage, translated by English playwright Christopher Hampton (Les Liaisons Dangereuses). Two children have a playground fight and the parents meet to discuss the matter. They begin with good humour but as the evening goes on, the meeting degenerates into irrational arguments, bringing up such topics as misogyny, racial prejudice and homophobia. It’s a serious play but Baker, who saw it in New York, was “amazed at how everyone around me was doubled over with laughter for much of the evening.” The play will be directed by James MacDonald and will open on March 10th, 2012. We have catalogued here before the singular successes of the Citadel/ Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program: Pride and Prejudice, As You Like It, the rollicking Three Musketeers and tonight’s Little Women, the Broadway Musical. Next year’s production from the felicitous program is Shakespeare’s beloved comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream. One of the features of the Citadel/Banff Centre program is that it allows participants the opportunity to work with seasoned professionals. Well, this production will feature Edmonton’s Julien Arnold in the choice role of Bottom the Weaver. (“The role he was born to play,” says Baker.) The director will be Tom Wood. This delightful tale of Bardian love, in a moon dappled forest just outside Athens, opens April 7, 2012.

foreshadowing with Colin MacLean And finishing off the season, “by popular demand,” a Citadel repeat production of The Sound of Music. Bob Baker’s signature production is the most popular of his 12 year tenure at the Citadel. “We invite the community to bring their children to get them caught up in the wonder of live theatre. There is nothing really like The Sound of Music. Rogers and Hammerstein weren’t afraid of addressing social issues as well as telling a great story.” Baker’s production opens April 21 and features Réjean Cournoyer as the Captain. And that’s the mainstage season. We should give a nod to the Robbin’s Family Season – a season that promises enchantment for the entire family and all for the purchase of three subscription tickets. (Or single tickets if you want). The season begins with A Christmas Carol. For over a decade, this Edmonton favourite has been gladdening our Yuletide hearts. Richard McMillan returns as Scrooge with Julien Arnold as Bob Cratchit. That will be followed by Seussical, the Steven Flaherty-Lynn Ahrens Broadway take on the writings of Dr Seuss. The Cat in the Hat will narrate this tale of an Elephant (Horton) who hears a Who – too small to be seen by anyone in the jungle. Written in the inspired doggrel of Dr. Seuss, the production is lively and funny with just enough adult content to keep mom and dad interested as well. And, finally, for your season ticket you’re invited to see The Sound of Music. “We sell an essential theatrical experience,” says Baker, summing up the season. “The show you are seeing one night will never be repeated. You can’t replay it. You can’t record it or photograph it. I want every experience to be vivid and immediate.”

STAMINA, STRENGTH, AGILITY OF BODY, MIND, HEART

At the Citadel we do not just put on plays, we build theatre for today and for the future. In addition to producing an extraordinary season year after year, the Citadel boasts an exciting initiative to foster a promising future for artists and playwrights. The Citadel’s Robbins Academy is Canada’s most comprehensive program for creative development in professional theatre. It unites five programs under one umbrella:

PLAY DEVELOPMENT We are committed to producing new work on our stages and offer resources (commissions, readings, workshops, dramaturgy) to assist playwrights in developing their work to its greatest potential.

THE ELDON AND ANNE FOOTE THEATRE SCHOOL Since 1966 we have provided year-round classes for all ages and experience levels, teaching physical, technical and creative skills in both acting and musical theatre.

PROFESSIONAL THEATRE PROGRAM

YOUNG COMPANIES

In partnership with the Banff Centre, we have created a rigorous, advanced training program to enhance and improve skills of emerging and established theatre professionals. We would like to acknowledge the generosity and vision of the Program founding supporters:

Tailored to 16 to 21 year olds who want to pursue a career in professional theatre, this year-long program develops and prepares young artists for entry into post-secondary education in the arts.

• The Eldon and Anne Foote Fund of the Edmonton Community Foundation • The John and Barbara Poole Family Fund • Canadian Western Bank and the Pechet Family

AUDIENCE OUTREACH We offer a variety of audience development activities designed to deepen appreciation of theatre arts and enable our audiences to be informed, engaged ambassadors for the Citadel and the arts.

about our

H

istorically the Stage Carpentry Department is responsible for the operation of the stage machinery to move, fly and manipulate the scenery during the performance. By means of ropes, pulleys and sand bags, scenery, curtains and backdrops were flown in and out to create the scenes on stage. Things have changed since the days of ropes made of hemp, and sandbags. Although the same goal has to be achieved we use newer technology, materials and methods to move and fly scenery. Steel cable and synthetic ropes have replaced the old natural fiber ropes, and steel counterweights for the old sandbags. As the requirements for the shows come in, we determine which elements fall into our department. In collaboration with others in the production department we cost and design the machinery, rigging and special effects including wind, rain, snow, fire, pyrotechnics and fog. When scenery is too large for manpower alone, we rely on automation (motors, cables, drums, drive chains etc.) for turn tables, elevators and trap doors. Rigging involves suspending up to 20 tons of lights, scenery, speakers, projectors and curtains above the stage and at times above the audience. All rigging must be safely engineered and all hardware must be rated for overhead lifting and suspension. Shows such as A Servant of Two Masters and Blithe Spirit called for many “gags” and tricks to help support the humour of the script. Effects can be quite complicated using all sorts of pneumatics, cables bearings and springs to the simpler ones using an old door hinge, a soup can and a long piece of string. Part of our responsibility includes flying performers in shows such as Beauty and the Beast, The Wizard of Oz, Peter Pan, A Christmas Carol and Angels in America. During the show tonight, look up and see what might be flying above your head!
