Ronnie Burkett has always maintained that coming back to

Alberta is coming back home. (He was born in Lethbridge.) It was here his art was embraced for the first time. Ronnie was probably fated to be a puppeteer but it wasn’t until he was 7 years old and looked up the word in the encyclopedia that his future swam into some kind of focus. As a teenager, he moved to New York to become a professional puppeteer with legendary puppetmaster Bil Baird.

“I think Ronnie is at his best when he takes subject matter that is challenging – even disturbing. ...” But before you settle back to enjoy his latest creation, Penny Plain, let me quote a little from a talk he once gave to some young puppeteers. “While I was working in New York, an idea came into my head – I wanted to do my own marionette show. I was working with a professional company of puppeteers and everyone said, ‘Oh, no one does marionette shows anymore.’ One day, I ran across an old puppeteer and he asked me what I wanted to do. I told him of my dream and he said, “Take that piece of foam (...the puppet he was working with) and go back home.” So I did. One day back home, someone asked me about my show and I told him what I was planning. ‘Cool,’ was his comment. He had never seen a marionette show and had no idea it couldn’t be done.” So Ronnie created his show which he wrote, designed and performed. It was called Fool’s Edge. It premiered at the Edmonton Fringe in 1986.

Penny Plain

Since then, of course, he has gone on to be the best at what he does in the world, performing in theatres from London’s Barbican to Sydney’s Opera House. The Citadel has had a hand in establishing his worldwide fame by co-producing his last two shows and giving him a local platform to launch his latest work. Observes Bob Baker of Ronnie’s twenty-five years of puppetry, “I think Ronnie is at his best when he takes subject matter that is challenging – even disturbing. This year he has gone back to that reality. He has written marionette shows that deal with the holocaust,

AIDS, and aging. Penny Plain deals with the end of civilization and you can’t get much darker than the end of everything. But being Ronnie – there’s humour and hope.” So, tonight as you join Penny Plain as she waits patiently for the end of the world, you might want to consider that Burkett is just opening the door to another season of challenging, alternative theatre in the Citadel’s Rice Season. (Even though Penny Plain, for reasons of space and production demands plays in the Maclab – the rest of the season finds its home in the Rice.)

“...it’s Danny doing what he does best –

that is railing against the world using his acid wit and wry observation.”

“The second show of the season” says Baker, “is a showcase for one of the most extraordinary performance artists in Canada. It’s a new one-man show from Daniel MacIvor and, like Ronnie, it’s Danny doing what he does best – that is railing against the world using his acid wit and wry observation.” Daniel MacIvor exploded onto the Toronto theatre scene in the 1980’s. His vehicle was a one-man show called House. It was the first of many – Here Lies Henry, Cul-De-Sac, Monster. He is one of our few playwrights that alternates his challenging, often autobiographical one-man shows with more mainstream efforts such as his hugely successful Marion Bridge. That’s why the theatre community was thunderstruck when, a few years back, MacIvor said he was giving up performing. He moved to Halifax, got married and bought a house. “I was concerned that I didn’t

have a real life,” he said. “That my life was just making crap up and pretending. So, I thought I needed to go into the real world and have a real life. And I did. But then I realized that, out in the real world, everyone is making crap up and pretending – it’s just that they don’t admit it.” And that life crisis forms the basis of his return to the one-man show – along with the philosophy of Schopenhauer, the music of John Denver, addiction, The Little Mermaid and divorce. This Is What Happens Next is the second work of the Rice Season. And MacIvor is coming, in person, to perform. “I decided to bring Danny here to Edmonton so our community can see this great artist at work,” comments Baker. “He plays several characters and plays them all as only he can do. It’s hilarious, it’s acerbic, thought provoking and unexpectedly touching.” This Is What Happens Next opens November 12th in the Rice Theatre.

“I am in love,” burbled one New York critic. “After seeing Rebecca Northan’s Blind Date, I now believe in a new and profound kind of love.” It’s not often one finds this kind of romantic hyperbole in New York’s famously vinegarish critical fraternity, but obviously Ms. Northan has pierced the cold heart of one scribe. Calgary’s Northan has long been part of the Canadian theatre scene appearing in movies (Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium), television shows (The Foundation) and plays (nominated for a Dora Award for Dear Boss).

She has appeared at the Edmonton Fringe and co-wrote (with her husband Bruce Horak) last summer’s smash hit, The Cancer Show. She also teaches – including a stint teaching improv for the Citadel/Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program. Blind Date began as a two minute exercise, was further developed in Calgary and morphed into a one-woman performance piece for the Harbourfront Centre in Toronto. She selfproduced the show for about $2,000. Rebecca has been nominated for a Dora Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female in a Principal Role and Blind Date was nominated for Outstanding Production (Independent Theatre Division). Two years later it opened to full houses and rapturous reviews in New York. Said the previously quoted NY critic, “Blind Date was the most fun I have had at the theatre in a very long time and, to an extent, restored my faith in the opposite sex.” WOW! How’s that for the theatrical reclamation of a lost soul. So what is this miracle piece? Well, it’s about Mimi. Mimi is a Parisienne clown – complete with red nose and matching lipstick and dress. Mimi has been stood up and while she waits, nurturing her lonely glass of wine, she checks out the male audience for a prospective partner. (I should warn you that Northan meets the audience as they enter the theatre. Seems like a friendly gesture but she is really scoping out someone who might join her on stage.) She persuades her putative co-star to join her on stage (the actress maintains she’s never been turned down) and thus begins Mimi’s big date. An endlessly creative improviser, night after night, she keeps the relationship going for 90 minutes. And a complete relationship it is. The two go on a date and repair to her modest flat. Things go on from there. They may

become engaged. They may break up. They may travel. Throughout it all, Northan is cheerful, charming, respectful and funny. She has an amazing ability to draw her partner into the spell of the evening – often the fellow fills in his character with personal details from his own life. As he shares his life with Mimi he is also sharing it with the willing audience. Backstage, there is a crew waiting for a suggestion from either Mimi or her paramour on where they want to go. The crew rushes on stage to create Mimi’s flat, perhaps a Parisian bistro, or to people a nightclub. I suspect from reading the reviews that, at times, they must be as instantly creative as Mimi herself. Says Baker, “The show couldn’t be more ‘live.’ Edmonton is an improv town but I don’t think I’ve ever heard of an audience so fully engaged in the telling of a story until now.” Rebecca Northan brings her Blind Date to the Rice Theatre opening on January 28th.

about the

Ronnie Burkett Theatre of

Marionettes was formed in 1986, dedicated to returning the puppet to the legitimate stage in theatre for adults. Theatre of Marionettes premiered with

Fool’s Edge, a wild Commedia dell’Arte musical which played numerous festivals as well as appearing in the seasons of theatre companies across Canada. Since then, other Theatre of Marionettes productions include the melodrama operetta Virtue Falls, a satirical examination of the Punch and Judy show in The Punch Club and the “epic” gothic thriller Awful Manors.

The Citadel is very pleased to celebrate the 25

th

anniversary of Ronnie Burkett’s Theatre of Marionettes and is honoured to premiere Ronnie Burkett’s newest production – Penny Plain. The commission of Penny Plain was made possible, in part, by the BMO Financial Group who supports Play Development at the Citadel Theatre. Ronnie Burkett is simply – a treasure. It has been said of his virtuosic and bravura performances that “every few years (Burkett) has just become a necessity of civilized theatregoing.” These photos document the evolution of some of what you are seeing tonight.
