Ladies and gentlemen, children of all ages, step right up as the Calgary Opera big top returns to the beautiful RiverWalk in East Village. I am delighted to welcome you to year two of Canada’s only outdoor summer opera festival – Opera in the Village. In 2013 we launched the opera festival and were overwhelmed by the response from the community far and wide who welcomed a new element to Calgary’s growing arts and culture scene and supported The Pirates of Penzance. We would not have this pleasure without the marvellous support from our corporate sponsors, government funders, and community partners. This project has been supported by the Government of Alberta; the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage Program - Department of Canadian Heritage; and The Calgary Foundation. Additionally, Imperial returns as presenting sponsor of this unique festival. The Remarkable Experience Accelerator Program initiated by the Calgary Hotel Association through Calgary Arts Development supports key projects such as Opera in the Village, recognizing the vital role that the arts play in enhancing Calgary as a destination for visitors. Their investment again this year has gone a long way in helping us realize our vision. We couldn’t have found a more fitting backdrop to anchor Opera in the Village than the ever evolving and culturally rich East Village. Calgary Opera applauds Calgary Municipal Land Corporation, who understands that building neighbourhoods goes far beyond bricks and mortar, and with their commitment to placemaking and community they truly allow the show to go on.
I would also like to thank our event sponsors FRAM + Slokker, Embassy Bosa, and Big Rock Brewery, as well as ATCO Structures & Logistics and Tourism Calgary for their generous support. Opera in the Village welcomed over 5,000 individuals in 2013. This year with Candide, set in a circus themed atmosphere full of whimsy and excitement we are sure to see growth in the number of people who join us to experience the magical world of opera. Thank you for your continued support, I hope to see you all at the rest of our season at the Jubilee Auditorium. On with the show! Chair, Evan J. Hazell

Big top, big dreams! Let us dazzle and delight you! Welcome back to our second summer of Opera in the Village. I was so overwhelmed with gratitude for those who attended last year, and by the efforts of our team. It’s not often you get to dream something into reality that allows Calgary to join other cities around the world in this kind of special outdoor offering. Year two means great growth for us. The festival has been extended over two weekends as we have increased our programming with many new elements to amuse your sense of wonder. For 2014 we bring you a big top production that surely will not disappoint. The centrepiece of Opera in the Village is Candide, Leonard Bernstein’s madcap musical. Our creative team has set this scandalously funny romp in a carnival atmosphere, which we have captured around every corner of the festival. For youngsters we have added matinée performances of an abridged one-hour adaptation of Hansel and Gretel, a show Calgary Opera presented to over 11,000 children as part of our school tour this past spring. Roving circus performers will add to the colourful ecosystem of the festival this year as many explore opera in an entirely new way. The traditional views of opera are cast aside as we journey through the East Village and take in gourmet food trucks, karaoke, movies under the stars and a singing competition. Opera in the Village goes beyond sitting in your seat as we break down barriers and offer you opportunities to enjoy the beauty and power of the human voice like never before. I would like to thank the cast, crew, staff and our Board of Directors, whose efforts have made this festival possible. And those wonderful artists who have joined us to ensure
the best possible quality on our stage. Like so many who are passionate about the arts, this has been a labour of love. I invite you all back to the Jubilee Auditorium for the larger than life 2014-2015 season featuring the Canadian premiere of the Pulitzer Prize winning Silent Night, Mozart’s comic masterpiece The Marriage of Figaro and one of the all time greatest opera hits – Bizet’s fiery and passionate Carmen. May the banks of the Bow set the perfect stage for you to delight in our second year of Opera in the Village. Enjoy the show, General Director and CEO, W.R. (Bob) McPhee, C.M.

The centrepiece of Opera in the Village 2014 is Leonard Bernstein’s comic masterpiece Candide in our 900-seat big top tent. With a score by the legendary Leonard Bernstein, book by Hugh Wheeler and lyrical contributions from the incomparable Stephen Sondheim, Candide is a timeless masterpiece. Innocent and trusting, young Candide truly believes that “Everything is for the best in this best of all possible worlds.” That is until he is expelled from his home in Westphalia, dragged into the Bulgarian army, brought before the Spanish Inquisition, swindled out of a fortune, shipwrecked on a desert isle, and separated time and again from his true love Cunegonde. As Candide and Cunegonde travel the world in search of truth, love and each other they discover that the best of all possible worlds is to be found right in their own backyard. This rollicking carnival production will be led by the same creative team who brought us The Pirates of Penzance last summer: Gordon Gerrard (conductor), Rob Herriot (stage director),Terry Gunvordahl (set & props designer), and Harry Frehner (lighting designer). Joining the team is Calgary costume designer Ronda Borneman. Candide features a sensational score, sparkling lyrics and an all-star Canadian cast with Matthew Bruce as Candide, Tracy Dahl as Cunegonde, Norine Burgess as Paquette, Alexander Dobson as Maximilian, Lynne McMurtry as the Old Lady, and David LeReaney as Dr. Pangloss, as well as a host of other wonderful voices, accompanied by a live orchestra.

matinees of an hour-long adaptation of Hansel & Gretel. This lively and colourful production delighted more than 11,000 children this spring as part of Calgary Opera’s school and community tour. Designed by Scott Reid with costumes by Laura Anderson, and directed by Aaron Coates, Hansel & Gretel features alumni from our Emerging Artist Development Program accompanied by piano in the big top tent.
carnival and culture • Candide was written during the time of the Enlightenment to attack the notion of a “best of all possible worlds.” •
Candide: Or Optimism was actually one of many satires written during the Enlightenment age that attacked the traditional views on society and religion with refuge in audacity.
• No less than three characters die, then come back to life later in the novel. •
Candide was first published in 1759 by French philosopher and satirist Francois Marie Arouet, aka Voltaire. Keep in mind that back before the French Revolution, this was at a time when the French were either dirty and living off the streets or rich and obnoxious, sipping on tea and wearing flagrant wigs along with their white dresses and makeup (Voltaire was in the latter category).
• The human cannonball travels at warp speeds of 60-70 miles per hour! • Whistling backstage is considered bad luck for circus performers. • The circus is over 2000 years old! • Performers NEVER eat peanuts backstage. Bad luck all the way around! • For good luck, some circus performers keep an elephant hair in their pocket from the tail of the elephant. • Thinking about running away to join the circus? It is harder to get into Ringling Brothers Clown school than Harvard Law School!
• • The book is only 75 pages, so it’s a great summer read!
In the 19th century, Landes, France was a brushy wasteland that turned swampy whenever it rained. Locals dealt with this harsh environment by walking on stilts—everyone, from housewives to the mailman, had a pair.

OPERA in the VILLAGE 15
August 14 – 23, 2014
synopsis ACT I
ACT II
In Westphalia, at Schloss Thunder-ten-Tronck, the ancestral home of the Baron, the Baron’s children, Cunegonde and Maximilian, along with their illegitimate cousin, Candide, and the maid, Paquette, are instructed by their tutor, Dr. Pangloss, that “all is for the best in this best of all possible worlds.” To the Baron’s dismay, Candide and Cunegonde fall in love, and Candide is banished from Westphalia. Invading Bulgarians abduct Candide and slaughter the rest of the family, except Cunegonde, who is abducted and eventually becomes a popular prostitute. Despite becoming the mistress of both a generous Jew and the Cardinal Archbishop, she still loves Candide. Candide, rescued by travelling actors, retains his faith in the teachings of Dr. Pangloss, whom he encounters by chance. Candide and Dr. Pangloss are arrested for their liberal philosophy and dragged off to Lisbon, where the Grand Inquisitor orders Pangloss to be hanged and Candide whipped. A kind, but eccentric Old Lady rescues him and nurses him back to health, and then reunites him with Cunegonde in Paris. When first the generous Jew, and then the Cardinal Archbishop, interrupt the lovers’ reunion, they are inadvertently killed by Candide. Candide, Cunegonde, and the Old Lady flee Paris for Cadiz and then set sail for the New World.
Upon arrival in Montevideo, South America, Paquette and Maximilian are sold into slavery. By chance, Candide, Cunegonde and the Old Lady arrive at the same location, but Candide must flee when the Old Lady convinces him that he is being pursued for the murder of the Jew and Cardinal Archbishop. When Candide swears to marry Cunegonde, Maximilian objects and is accidentally killed by Candide as the two engage in a scuffle. Candide then escapes into the South American jungle and stumbles upon the fabled city of El Dorado, where all is opulent and perfect. Tiring of paradise, Candide leaves, laden with sheep, gold, and gems and heads for the Dutch colony of Surinam. There, he learns that pirates have taken Cunegonde to Venice. Vanderdendur, a Dutch merchant, offers Candide a boat with which to rescue Cunegonde, but Candide soon discovers that the merchant’s generosity was a sham. Candide finds Cunegonde, Paquette, and the Old Lady in Venice. There, Candide uses all of their remaining riches to buy the freedom of Cunegonde and Maximilian, who is not dead after all. Now reunited, Cunegonde, Paquette, Maximilian, the Old, Lady and Dr. Pangloss join Candide as he decides to follow his new creed. With his ragtag “family,” he will settle down to a simple farm life and “make his garden grow.”

Grand Opera!
Fiery!
A story of danger and disguise, naivety and resignation. Beautifully crafted arias and a brilliant use of ensemble. Considered one of the great operatic masterpieces. Genius at its best.
A naïve soldier – a fiery gypsy – a tragic end. A sensational story of seduction, jealousy, and deceit. Some of opera’s most recognizable music.
