4 CALGARY OPERA 2016-17 SEASON
message from the
chair | michael brown
Opera in the Village holds a special place for me as it led to my first involvement with Calgary Opera and joining the Board of Directors, eventually becoming Chair. It also led to one of my first exposures to the beautiful, inspiring, and moving art form that is opera. I’m not alone in that regard, as Opera in the Village has engaged a large group of Calgarians that had previously never been to a Calgary Opera performance. As Opera in Village continues to attract a large and diverse group of Calgarians, it also requires a substantial amount of support from our community and corporate partners to succeed. Corporate and community visionaries, Imperial and Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC) continue to illustrate their commitment to Calgary and Calgary Opera through their investment in Opera in the Village. We extend our sincerest appreciation to Imperial, who truly understands that ongoing support as Presenting Sponsor is instrumental for the continued growth of the festival. As President & CEO of CMLC (festival site partner), I am proud of our involvement as a partner supporting the festival infrastructure. We also welcome back Enmax, as our Festival Energizing Partner. Community support from a variety of sources such as ATCO Structures & Logistics for our backstage trailers; and our media partners Calgary Herald, Global Calgary and Newad shows just how all facets of our city join together in expanding our lives through cultural experiences. We also extend our thanks to our community partners whose leadership role supporting Opera in the Village since its inception illustrates that
it takes a great community to build a brilliant and vibrant city – Alberta Government, Canadian Heritage, Calgary Arts Development Authority, Calgary Hotel Association, City of Calgary and Tourism Calgary. On behalf of the entire board, I thank all of our partners who have made this event possible, as well as all of our opera-loving patrons who continue to support the opera through your donations and your patronage. I welcome those new to the Opera, and I truly hope you enjoy your first experience at Opera in the Village, and to this great art form as much as I did three years ago.
message from the
general director and ceo | W.R. (Bob) McPhee, C.M. We begin another season of opera at the
confluence of the Elbow and Bow rivers, now the home of the thriving East Village. This community has been the backdrop of Opera in the Village from the start, a backdrop that has grown bigger and busier year on year. This growth has meant we’ve had to downsize the festival for one year, but what we lack in size, we make up for in community spirit – once again bringing opera to the community in both free programming and mini-productions of Hansel & Gretel and Cowtown Opera’s Archiebaldo! This year’s theme brings attention to The Chautauqua Tent. The Chautauqua movement was a traveling institution that began in Chautauqua Lake, NY. The movement brought rural communities together during 4-6 days of education and entertainment, from musical acts to magic shows. Chautauqua was brought to Canada in 1917 by John M. Erickson, with a headquarters in Calgary, so it seemed fitting for Calgary Opera to bring the movement home for this year’s Opera in the Village. We look forward to celebrating community spirit under our Chautauqua Tent, with some of Calgary’s best community groups and entertainers. We have vocal, musical, dance and theatre groups, all performing over our two weekends. If you registered online to attend Opera in the Village at calgaryopera.com, you will have received one of our Seed Eco-wrist
bands to watch all this entertainment for free. When the festival’s over, you can plant your wrist band and watch it grow into beautiful flowers! We wouldn’t be able to bring you Opera in the Village without including opera, so we’re delighted to begin each festival day at 1 p.m. with Hansel & Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck (adapted by Aaron Coates and Mel Kirby), performed by alumni of our Emerging Artist Program. This same ensemble performs again, as part of our free entertainment, each festival day at 5 p.m. with Evening Arias – a selection of excerpts from celebrated operas, and a sneak-peek of some of this season’s famous arias. We end each festival day at 7 p.m. with Cowtown Opera’s Archiebaldo! I saw this cheeky opera during its original run at Cowtown Cabaret, and thought it would make the perfect addition to this year’s festival lineup. Cowtown Opera is part of our Canadian opera community, and was founded by Calgary Opera Emerging Artist alumna, Michelle Minke, so I’m pleased to celebrate her success by partnering with her, and her opera company. Please enjoy this year’s entertainment, spend some time in the growing East Village and celebrate community with us. I hope to see you again next year, when we re-launch a full-scale Opera in the Village with Rodgers & Hammerstein’s South Pacific. Enjoy!
Philanthropy Drives
Opera and the Arts Community The arts breathe life into our communities, and are often a reflection of the strength and spirit of our cities. When organizations receive the support of their communities and are actively engaging audiences it can be telling of the vitality of both the city and its cultural landscape.
Calgary is renowned for its generosity both in charitable giving and volunteerism – our generous and helpful spirit helps define us as Calgarians and brings us together for a common cause: making our community stronger. This past January, Calgary Opera launched the Step Up for the Opera campaign, with the goal of inspiring philanthropy and bringing attention to the importance of supporting the arts in our community. Calgary Opera was bequeathed a gift from the late Mario Stella, and allocated a portion of that bequest to a fund that would match new and increased gifts to Calgary Opera. “This was an opportunity to take a bequest and use it to inspire others,” says Bob McPhee, C.M., General Director & CEO of Calgary Opera. “We also wanted to communicate that all gifts are important, large and small. It is through the support of our opera-loving audience and community members that we exist. This passionate group of supporters helps ensure that world-class opera is brought to the mainstage in Calgary every year.” Thanks to tremendous generosity shown by patrons toward the Step Up for the Opera campaign, that passionate group is larger and more connected than ever. Almost 250 community members
have stepped up their support for your Calgary Opera over the last eight months, which represents an overall increase of 27% more donors over the previous year. Community members are finding more ways to connect with each other and share their love of opera through get-togethers like the season open house, backstage tours, and a variety of other social events. Opera in the Village is a terrific example of how the arts can bring together a diverse range of Albertans to celebrate life and music in Calgary, with a blend of affordable and free performances along the banks of the Bow River that makes opera more accessible than ever. Opera in the Village would not exist without the support of our community supporters and the legions of volunteers who operate it. Canada’s only outdoor summer opera festival has become a reflection of our city’s diversity and culture with its opportunity to engage a broad audience and volunteer base, and through the variety of community groups contributing to the Chautauqua tent. Calgary is an amazing and resilient community that has shown how we band together, to both celebrate when times are good, and to unite and support each other when we face challenges. Calgary Opera is proud to be part of this vibrant, strong, and close-knit community.
“this was an opportunity to take a bequest
and use
it to inspire others.”

Winner of the First International Competition of Ukrainian Retro Music (2015, L’viv Ukraine), Ukrainian-Canadian mezzo-soprano Stephania Romaniuk sings tangos, rhumbas, waltzes, and foxtrots of the 1930-50s, recreating the golden era of Ukrainian cabaret. In the tradition of singers like Eileen Farrell, Ms Romaniuk sings with all the heart and imagination of mid-century jazz singers with the beauty and ease of classical Bel Canto. She has performed across North America and toured Ukraine twice singing this repertoire, and today is joined by Derek Stoll (keyboard), Jonathan Lewis (violin), and Stephen Shepard (bass). Born in Vienna and trained in the L’viv Conservatory, composer Bohdan Wesolowsky immigrated to Canada after the Second World War where he contributed greatly to the cultural life of Montreal’s Ukrainian diaspora. For deftly combining ballroom dance rhythms with melodies and harmonies evoking Ukrainian folk and art songs, Wesolowsky is considered the “father” of Ukrainian popular music.

Cantaré Children’s Choir Canada is home to a rich and vibrant music tradition. The immigrants who built our country into the great nation it has become brought with them a love of song, dance and fiddle playing. Traditional songs and dances, transmitted orally from generation to generation, tell the story of Canada, its landscape and its people. A country as vast as Canada produces a diverse range of styles and genres from region to region – many of them represented in today’s programme. Canada is also home to some of the world’s best composers – our choral composers in particular are celebrated internationally. We’ve tried to include works by many of them. Cantaré Children’s Choir has a long and esteemed tradition of sharing the music of Canada. We hope that you will enjoy this tribute to “our home and native land” AND we will even give you the chance to join in the singing!

Christmas at the Opera The featured operatic rarity will be Doctor Miracle (Le Docteur Miracle) a delectable one-act farce by the 18-year-old, Georges Bizet. With recognizable melodies later used in Carmen and The Pearl Fishers, the madcap plot revolves around young lovers thwarted by their elders and (in our version) a Christmas dinner gone horribly wrong. This is followed by a magical melange of staged carols in the intimate setting of the Mamdani Opera Centre. It’s Christmas Season perfection. BY GIACOMO PUCCINI

Communities
At Imperial, we believe our company’s prosperity is directly tied to the health and wellbeing of the communities where we operate. That’s why we support a range of community activities from sports and culture to academia and the arts. Combined, these opportunities form the fabric of a vibrant community. “Supporting the arts means we can help make living in Calgary a more interesting and diverse experience,” says Rich Kruger, president and CEO, Imperial. “The arts provide a place and opportunity, outside of work, to network, learn and grow.” Imperial has been the title sponsor of Calgary Opera’s Opera in the Village summer festival since its inception. This year, Calgary Opera held a sneak-a-peek pre-festival event for employees at Imperial’s new Quarry Park office campus. The event was a way to engage employees in Imperial’s sponsorship efforts while stimulating interest in Calgary Opera’s regular season programming. “At Imperial, we take a long-term view to our business and our partnerships, and this extends to community involvement. have a set of priorities and values that don’t change year-toyear or with the price of oil. When you have clarity of values and priorities, decision making is a lot easier. We believe it’s important to have a strong foundation upon which to grow and prosper — the arts are integral to that foundation,” adds Kruger. In 2015 Imperial contributed more than $20 million to support Canadian communities, including local arts organizations like Calgary Opera.

Opera?
“Opera” is the Italian word for ‘work’, and is a story told through music and words. An orchestra (in Calgary Opera’s case, the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra), plays the music in a ‘pit’ under the stage. Singers onstage bring the story to life through acting and sing the words (known as ‘the libretto’ instead of ‘lyrics’.) What makes opera different from musical theatre is that the singers are ‘unplugged’, meaning there are no microphones, and their voices are carried through their superior trained vocal ability and acoustics in the Jubilee Auditorium.
Principals and Cast The main characters of each story are sung by ‘principals’, who are often guest artists that are brought in because of their talent in performing that particular character. It takes an enormous amount of dedication, practice and rehearsing to form a particular character for an artist. Opera singers also tend to know more than one language, including Italian, French, German, or Russian!
The Chorus The principals, as well as supporting artists, are often joined by the Calgary Opera Chorus. The Calgary Opera Chorus is made up of volunteers, who devote their talent and skill to performing in all the productions, and rehearse for many evenings prior to a production. In order to be a Chorus member, you must audition for the Director of Artistic Operations and Chorus Director of the Opera company. 22 CALGARY OPERA 2016-17 SEASON

About
Opera
1.
It’s too expensive and elite. A ticket to Calgary Opera can be less expensive than a pop concert ticket or sporting event! Prices range from $36.00 all the way up to $164.00, depending on where you would like to sit. People of all ages and economic backgrounds attend opera. It’s not for the rich as it once was.
2.
I won’t understand it. Even though performed in other languages, Calgary Opera’s productions have supertitles with English translation above the stage, so that you can stay in touch with the story as it is being told. Also, much like a movie trailer before you see a movie, you can watch scenes from an opera or read the summary either before you arrive, or at the performance in the program to get an idea what the story is about. Don’t be afraid!

Today, opera is more accessible than ever and does not require a dress code (although – it is nice once in a while to dress up a bit for a night on the town!). Wear what you feel comfortable in – one of the best parts of going to the opera is seeing all of the different varieties from ball gowns to casual slacks.
4.
Opera goes on for hours. Some movies last less than an hour and a half, some last up to three hours. The same applies to opera, some are shorter than others. Most operas last not much longer than the typical Hollywood film. There is a generous intermission in between, which makes going to the opera a real experience while you mingle with other opera-goers or view the exhibits in the lobby.

Opera is not relevant anymore. So much of our lives are taken up with electronic information and sensory overload. Opera is more relevant than ever before as people wish to fulfill a balance of real, thought-provoking, live experiences and connections. Thank You
to
Calgary Opera’s
Amazing
Volunteers
Volunteers are an integral part of Calgary Opera; we couldn’t operate without them. For this, we give a big THANK YOU to all those who’ve helped us with our mail outs, events, mainstages, Opera in the Village and more. We sat down with Taryn Craig, Calgary Opera’s Volunteer Coordinator to ask her a few questions about Calgary Opera’s volunteer program.
1. How many volunteers does Calgary Opera currently have?
Approximately 550 active members. 2. How many volunteers does it take to run the full-scale Opera in the Village? In 2015 we had 340 volunteers contribute 2200 hours! 3. Besides Opera in the Village, what volunteer roles are there during our mainstage season? During our mainstage season, we’re always looking for help at the opera for greeting patrons, selling merchandise, hosting receptions, selling raffle tickets, and helping backstage with catering for our casts. We also have multiple special events where we look for help with set-up, tear-down, and working at the event on jobs such as bartending, serving food, and other duties as required. We also look for help around the office with envelope stuffing, watching our box office during staff meetings, and sometimes various marketing tasks such as sending out posters, etc. 4. How long has your longest volunteer been with Calgary Opera? I don’t know the exact date but I do know there are a few who have been around for over 20 years! 5. What are some of the perks of being a volunteer for Calgary Opera? Most importantly – seeing the shows for free! Every volunteer is entitled to dress rehearsal tickets throughout our season. Depending on the time of volunteering and the number of shifts done, you can qualify and get this special sneak-peek of the mainstage performances. We also host appreciation events and receptions, plus our team of volunteers really is the best! 6. What is expected of a volunteer if they sign up to the program? Volunteers are expected to be good representatives of Calgary Opera. Understand our mission in the community and be able to answer basic questions about the company. Other requirements are dependent on the volunteer job. Some jobs require heavy lifting, some require volunteers to be over 18, and others may require a lot of walking! In general, a basic understanding of customer service is expected and a willingness to work as a team player with other Calgary Opera volunteers is what we expect of everyone. 24 CALGARY OPERA 2016-17 SEASON
7. How do new volunteers sign up and stay up-to-date with what’s happening at Calgary Opera? The best way to sign up is to contact me (Taryn) either with a phone call or an email – 403-802-3415 or volunteer@calgaryopera.com. We’ll have you fill in a quick form, sign our volunteer agreement, then send you over to our snazzy volunteer website to sign up for shifts. 8. What is your favourite part about running this program? My favourite part about running this program is by far the relationships I’ve gained with all the volunteers. Everyone is so helpful, understanding, flexible, and committed to their jobs. Plus they make me laugh and we always have such a great time even when things get busy! It’s a wonderful little community we’ve created with Calgary Opera volunteers. I just want to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who volunteers for Calgary Opera. We say it a lot but we truly cannot do what we do without you. You are the one helping build the Opera experience in Calgary from the ground up. You are the faces of Calgary Opera and we’re so lucky to have the A-team of volunteers in Calgary. You’re the true stars here!

East Village. Building, welcoming and rocking the city in 2016.
Welcome to East Village,
Calgary’s newest, most historic and most exciting neighbourhood. The place where Calgary began – at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow Rivers – has been growing from the ground up since CMLC became East Village’s master developer in 2007. Through passionate placemaking and innovative revitalization, the once overlooked area of vacant lots and neglected buildings has blossomed into a vibrant riverfront destination. And it just keeps getting better. Our urban village on the Bow River offers something for all Calgarians this summer – a recreational playground, event hub, dining destination, retail hot spots, even a home. And now, it’s becoming a cultural capital, too. Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre, opened its impressive doors on July 1 and is already setting the tone for musical culture in Canada. Inside the glazed terra cotta walls, nine interlocking towers evoke the Canadian landscape and act as musical vessels. Five floors of exhibition space house more than 2,000 artifacts and instruments, along with recording studios, workshops, classrooms and performance spaces. Steps away, the dual-branded Hilton Garden Inn and Homewood Suites opens this year to welcome visitors to the newest, oldest, coolest, warmest neighbourhood in town. Guests are going to love the south-facing rooftop terrace, while the main floor restaurant and lounge serves up hospitality to locals and visitors alike. East Village’s many public spaces are bustling hives of activity – whether participating in a lunchtime barre fitness class, taking in a breakdance showcase or residents tending to their garden plot, people are out-and-about making connections in their community. arts organizations like Theatre Calgary, Beakerhead and of course, Calgary Opera animate our parks and plazas with dazzling creative spectacles. Already, the historic Simmons Building is Calgary’s favourite new breakfast-lunch-dinner rendezvous. From early morning till late into the evening, the culinary proprietors of Sidewalk Citizen Bakery, Phil & Sebastian Coffee Roasters and charbar – the three gastro-tenants of Simmons – turn food culture into a delicious art form to be enjoyed with friends. The fresh local goodness spills out onto Jack and Jean Leslie RiverWalk™ as noshers dine in the sunshine along the riverbank. St. Patrick’s Island, across the elegant ‘skipping stone’ George C. King Bridge, has quickly become Calgary’s favourite backyard playground, offering endless activities for all. From Trout Beach near the western tip to Confluence Plaza by the Zoo, and the naturally beautiful trails, playground and hill in between, SPI is an island oasis in the heart of the city. Year round programming – with everything from yoga to Bocce to storytime for tots – makes St. Patrick’s Island a must-see spot for all Calgarians. Some 800 new EV residents have made themselves at home in their smart, welcoming riverfront condominiums, and many more are coming. With street-level retailers like Merle Norman and RedBloom Salon right at the doorstep (literally) and many more retailers on the way, it’s no wonder East Village already feels like home. We were delighted to receive some amazing feedback on the program from students, teachers, parents and audience members. “I think everyone played an important role in the opera because without costumes, actors, running crew, our opera wouldn’t be complete, like a puzzle where you need every piece to complete it.” - Miranda C, gr 5 “Through the opera experience I learned that every kid is capable and talented. Every student contributed something to the opera that they set their heart to, even students who had doubts. This was evident all over the opera process from kids memorizing all their songs and stage blocking to previous nonmusician kids who perfected their instrument part. I just saw so much hard work and dedication from all our students. - Ms. AuYeung “I definitely grew during our opera. I learned all the technical terms of an opera and how to make an opera. Our school has grown too. On the playground, people have started including people more.” - Joshua T, gr 5 “Now I think we have a bond. Something that connects us.” - Daniel C, gr 6 “I just wanted to share how amazing I thought Doppel was. A truly engaging, unique, fun, and catchy production. I love how every kid was involved, on or off stage, in a role that suited them. [My son] reports that he “gradually got over his stage fright,” with rehearsals. [My daughter] was such a proud little tree! Those huge painted and changing backdrops were amazing. Remarkably well done!” - Erica, parent “I loved the fact that we didn’t just make something fun to watch. We got to meet new people and while we did that, we had fun and I had my friends there with me! It felt good when everyone saw us and they know how talented we are. It makes you feel like you can do anything!” - Sarah, gr 3 “I just wanted to thank you for the invite to your Opera. It was really impressive to see the various and many intricacies included. The energy, commitment, time and thought was evident from the moment one walked in the door on the red carpet to the numbered assigned seating to the enthusiastic involvement of all students and staff. They were proud of their work as they should be!” - Laurie A, invited guest “I found that I made a lot more friends through this process. I met kids from Div I and GATE, who are super awesome and I don’t think I would have met them without the opera. I think our school is more of a “family” now, and is not divided by programs or age groups.” - Mya U, gr 6
Through the opera experience I learned that every kid is capable and talented. “Every student contributed something to the opera that they set their heart to, even students who had doubts.

BECAUSE AN OLD IDEA CAN HEAT A NEW COMMUNITY
The concept of district heating dates back to the 1880s, which is also the time when people first built the historic East Village. Today, as people and businesses are moving back to the area, the ENMAX District Energy Centre is helping bring the new East Village to life. From our building on 9th Avenue, we’re able to supply heat to multiple buildings. Already The National Music Centre, Embassy BOSA Evolution, Verve by FRAM+Slokker, and 14 other buildings have made the simple and environmentally responsible choice to heat their buildings from the ENMAX District Energy Centre.
