THE CHAUTAUQUA TENT

Celebrate community spirit with varied music and performers under the Chautauqua Tent at Calgary’s East Village RiverWalk Plaza as Canada’s only outdoor summer opera festival returns for the fourth annual Opera in the Village! The entertainment begins each day with the Emerging Artist family performance of Hansel and Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck (adapted by Aaron Coates). Each day will end with the very funny (and cheeky), Archibaldo, performed by Cowtown Opera. There’ll be varied free entertainment for the whole family between each performance.

By JOHANN STRAUSS

NOVEMBER 19, 23 & 25, 2016 Experience this classic Viennese operetta full of high-jinks and hilarity, where a masked ball thrown by a Russian prince leads to mistaken identities and eventually…jail. This was Johann Strauss’ most beloved operatic work, and is filled with the infectious melodies that made him so famous.

by JOHN ESTACIO & JOHN MURRELL

F E B RU A RY 4 , 8 & 1 0 , 2 0 1 7 In celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, we invite you to get swept up in this true Alberta story of unexpected love and its tragic consequences. Filumena, an Italian immigrant in a loveless marriage, finds passion in a forbidden affair. When faced with a lie, she finds truth in herself. Filumena, a Calgary Opera new work (originally cocommissioned and produced with The Banff Centre), had its world premiere in 2003. It opened to rave reviews, and is now the most produced Canadian opera in history.

By GIACOMO PUCCINI

A P R I L 1, 5 & 7 , 2 0 1 7 Revel in Princess Turandot’s defiance, as she sentences potential suitors who can’t answer her three riddles to death. She meets her match when confronted by the clever Prince Calaf who tries to melt her icy heart with a game of his own. Turandot was so popular, it made its way around the world a year after opening in Milan in 1926, and features the famous “Nessun Dorma” aria.

Founded in 1972, Calgary Opera’s Mission is:

“To enhance our community and spur civic pride through a variety of opera experiences.” Since its inception, and especially in the past decade, Calgary Opera has made a name for itself as a company that is committed to the development of Canadian talent and the development of new opera works. Calgary Opera has an annual operating budget of over $5 million with a subscription base close to 3,500 and total attendance over 80% capacity. Over the past decade creating new works and building new productions has been a cornerstone of the company. By the opening of Calgary Opera’s 2016-17 season, the company will have presented six world premieres, six Canadian premieres, and many company premieres. Advertising in the Calgary Opera Program is a wonderful way to heighten your exposure and achieve greater visibility in the arts community, and specifically to fans of the opera. With performances taking place in the Mainstage Series of the 2016/2017 season, your audience reach is well over 27,000 people. All performances take place at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium, which seats approximately 2,400 people, except for Opera in the Village, which takes place on RiverWalk Plaza in East Village. Calgary Opera’s fourth annual summer festival, Opera in the Village, featuring Hansel and Gretel and Archibaldo, is Canada’s only outdoor summer opera festival.

Take A Bow! For any Full Page/Full Season advertisers, you will receive a pair of tickets to each of the four productions in the Mainstage Series which take place during the 2016/2017 season. (Value of approximately $830.00!) This is our way of saying thanks, and also, a way for you to enjoy an opera performance, and at the same time, you can see your advertising in action! Each issue of the Calgary Opera Program will be displayed online at playhousepublications.ca in an easy-to-read digital version. This means your advertisement will be seen FREE of charge online and when you click on your ad, it will link right toPUBLISHERS your website.
