I would like to thank all those who contribute to this magazine and the valuable information that’s shared. In this edition we salute the champions of Minor Hockey Week. Congratulations to those teams and to the teams, who won silver medals. Finishing with silver is no small feat and you should be proud of your achievements. This season has seemed to roar by. I would like to thank the volunteers and staff for their countless hours of work that make our season run so smooth. We always experience a few hiccups but when we step back and look at the big picture, over 8,500 athletes hit the ice and played a solid seven months of hockey. Next year, the 2018-19 season will see some significant changes as we align with Hockey Alberta’s “Alberta One” concept. This will mean we’ll have six tiers of hockey, along with Elite in the case of Bantam and Midget. What will this look like? When you’ve registered for a tier 3 tournament you will be closely matched with other teams in the province and we won’t experience these huge gaps in team talent. Hockey Edmonton will begin the roll out of Hockey Canada’s novice program, which may see age range hockey. Development will be a key component with this program. The goal is to grow better skilled players, who can compete and play at higher levels especially when they hit pee wee, bantam and midget. Local associations will have standards they will be required to meet as an organization when it comes to governance and reporting. This falls under Hockey Alberta’s “Ideal MHA” program. We continue to grow our relationships with local, provincial, national and now international organizations such as Harbin, China. Hockey Edmonton hosted the Harbin China Girls Team in late November. We’ve opened the door for our teams, both male and female, to visit China for future tournaments. Hockey Edmonton is working on a possible leadership conference for pee wee, bantam and midget team leaders; we will keep everyone posted on how this is progressing. Your Hockey Edmonton board and executive have been busy over the past few months on many projects to improve the hockey experience and add positive life lessons to our sport. The young athletes we see on the ice are more than just hockey players: they are our leaders of tomorrow. On behalf of the executive, the board, volunteers and staff of Hockey Edmonton, enjoy the city championships and we’ll see you next season.
Yours in Hockey,
Mark Doram

The Publisher Welcome to our final edition of the Hockey Edmonton Magazine for the 2017-2018 season. This is our Yearbook Edition of the magazine, which features the gold medal winning teams from 2018 Quikcard Edmonton Minor Hockey Week. Additionally, we have included a number of “spotlights” of players, who won gold medals during this event. And in the centrefold, we have a montage of photos taken during Quikcard Edmonton Minor Hockey Week. Thanks to Ian Jackson and the great group of photographers at Epic Photography for supplying these photos. One of the mainstays in our magazine is the “Spotlight on an Official” feature, where we interview a young minor hockey official. For this edition, we met up with 16-year-old Ashwin Kaul, who has been officiating minor hockey since he was 13 years old. The officials volunteer their time to help make Minor Hockey Week possible. To put a dollar value on it, the value of donated time works out to approximately $45,000. That’s a big commitment! Including officials, approximately 3,200 people volunteer their time to make Quikcard Edmonton Minor Hockey Week possible. Special thanks and recognition to Joan Kirillo, chairperson for this event, and her great group for all their dedication! Rounding out this edition, we have a neat submission from Luke Fox at Sportsnet: His top 100 things he likes about the current NHL game, from the quirky to the cool. That’s all for this issue. With the hockey season winding down, we would like to wish all the participants a great off-season, and look forward to seeing everyone back on the ice in a few short months!

EDMONTON OILERS COMMUNITY FOUNDATION HONOURS DAVE SEMENKO

EDMONTON, AB – Forever known as the Oilers protector on the ice, Dave Semenko’s legacy will now also be immortalized off it with the Dave Semenko Legacy Project. The Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation (EOCF), in partnership with Sport Central, the National Hockey League, and National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA), announced the Semenko Legacy Project. The initiative is devoted to providing equipment to minor athletes in order for them to participate in whichever sport they desire. The announcement comes on the same day as the NHL Centennial Greatest Team Celebration, which saw the 198485 Oilers voted as the greatest team in National Hockey League history. “The Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation was absolutely thrilled to announce our contribution to the Dave Semenko Legacy Project in partnership with Sport Central,” said EOCF Executive Director Natalie Minckler. “The EOCF is contributing $320,000 in partnership with the NHL and NHLPA, which will be donated to Sport Central for these two special initiatives.”

Sport Central, led by community-oriented individuals wanting to help acquire sporting equipment for children, has been able to provide over 135,000 low-income children with safe equipment since its beginning. “I know that those funds will go a long way in getting kids into the sport of their choice,” said Minckler. Semenko’s initiatives are coined Dave’s Drive and Put a Lid on A Kid. Dave’s Drive is an equipment drive aimed at gathering equipment and donations, while Put a Lid on a Kid increases concussion prevention awareness by providing helmets to the minor athletes. “In Dave’s memory, we wanted to ensure that all those kids receiving those helmets knew how very special Dave was to our organization,” said Minckler. “Each helmet has a special #27 decal on it.”
“
Members of the Semenko family and 1984-85 Oilers were at Abbottsfield Recreation Centre, where the announcement took place. “It’s not the same without him here,” said Oilers great Wayne Gretzky. “He was the guy that kept everybody together and kept everybody loose, but it’s a great charity event.” Dave’s brother, Brian Semenko, said Dave understood the challenges parents go through in order to give their children an opportunity to participate in sports. “This is all about helping parents get their kids playing,” he said. “It’s very touching seeing Dave’s name, kids running around and Dave’s sticker on the helmets. "It’s a little overwhelming and unexpected but it's an honour.”
In Dave’s memory, we wanted to ensure that all those kids receiving those helmets knew how very special Dave was to our organization. Each helmet has a special #27 decal on it.

HARBIN
HOCKEY ASSOCIATION HOCKEY IS BECOMING A GLOBAL SPORT BY JOEL LENIUS
PHOTOS PROVIDED BY TWO POINT PHOTOGRAPHY The sport of hockey is growing rapidly across the globe. Countries that were not customarily associated with the sport, are now highly invested in developing their hockey programming. Some of these counties include: China, Mexico, Jamaica and Australia. With the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics fast approaching, China has promoted and invested significant resources into improving their winter sports programming, specifically the sport of hockey. There are numerous Canadian coaches and players, who have recently visited or moved to China to contribute to their hockey player and coach development opportunities. Additionally, Chinese hockey associations have further invested resources into their players and coaches visiting Canada to learn firsthand from our practices. During November and December 2017, Hockey Edmonton hosted a female youth peewee/ bantam team from Harbin, China. Harbin is the sister city to Edmonton, Alberta, and has a small hockey association within their city: Harbin Hockey Association. Twenty female players and three female coaches visited Edmonton and participated in hockey games and practices, which were organized by Hockey Edmonton. The purpose of their trip was to learn from Hockey Edmonton’s sport practices, organization, and administration. In addition to the visiting team members, two Harbin delegates also visited Edmonton: Xuanxin She (Director, Harbin Sport Bureau) and JingGan Wang (Principal, Harbin Sport School). The team began their Canadian trip at the 2017 WickFest tournament in Calgary, and performed remarkably well there. After the tournament, the team travelled to Edmonton, where they participated in 10 exhibition games against Edmonton Girls Hockey Association teams. The team performed very well in Edmonton and gained in-game experience and knowledge to take back to their Harbin hockey programming.
12 | Hockey Edmonton Magazine
In addition to game-play, the team was able to participate in skill development sessions with some of Edmonton’s finest hockey instructors: Serdachny Hockey, Quantum Speed, and Mike McGinnis and Joel Lenius (Hockey Canada Master Skills Coaches). Each skill development session had a specific theme to ensure that the girls experienced a wide-range of topics:
Serdachny Hockey – shooting and scoring skills Quantum Speed – agility and transition skating skills Mike McGinnis and Joel Lenius – individual/ team tactics (puck protection, zone entry skills, downlow play, 1v1 play, 2v1 play, etc.) In partnership with the Oilers Entertainment Group, the team was also able to view an Edmonton Oil Kings game and the Hockey Canada and USA NWT game. These were exceptional once in a lifetime experiences that the team was particularly thankful for. The passion and love for the game of hockey was evident with this group of Chinese hockey players. It was refreshing to see a group of athletes and coaches trust and co-operate with each other so well. It is opportunities like these where the true meaning of hockey is displayed: building relationships, learning new skills, and developing a love for this wonderful game.

personal development. - DR. CHERYL MACDONALD -
All things hockey the focus of summer conference in Edmonton Coaches, athletes, parents and fans can add valuable perspectives to panel discussions this summer when academia gather in Edmonton to talk about all things hockey.
The 2018 Hockey Conference, with presenters so far from across Canada, the United States, Finland, the United Kingdom – and even the possibility of China, who just got a professional women’s hockey team that plays in Canada – will take place at the University of Alberta from July 5-7.
14 | Hockey Edmonton Magazine
By Shari Narine
“Whether you believe society affects hockey or hockey affects society, there’s a relationship there and so we often, in Canada, equate hockey with nationalism. So that means a big part of our population defines itself by hockey,” said Dr. Cheryl MacDonald, who is heading the event. MacDonald was also on the organizing committee of the 2016 conference, which took place at the University of New Brunswick. When she made the move to Edmonton in January 2017 to undertake post-doctoral research at the UAlberta’s Institute for Sexual Minority Studies and Services, she brought the conference with her.
While academics do dominate as presenters and panelists, MacDonald says there are occasions where parents, coaches and fans “have done their own little analysis or own thinking and we will often accept them, too.” But she stresses that those involved with minor hockey don’t have to take part in such a formal manner. They are welcome to attend panel discussions, which always allow for at least 15 minutes of questions and comments from the floor. “We love having observers. I think often times hearing ‘academic’ scares people and we like to involve the community because without the community, outside of academia, we’re all just talking to one another. We welcome parents, coaches, athletes, anybody. They add to the discussion and we hope we can offer them some sort of personal development,” said MacDonald. “We hope they are able to get something out of it, too.” The conference which is now held every two years rose from humble beginnings. In 2001 a group of academic friends gathered to delve deeper into hockey and its different aspects. From there, the hockey conference became official, including being hosted once in Buffalo. MacDonald has high hopes that it will one day be held in Europe. “Since then hockey has become a bit more of a rigourous site for academic study so it has grown and now you see people like me, making their entire careers out of it so the conference has grown in relation to that,” said MacDonald, who did her doctoral research on homonegativity among Major Midget AAA hockey players. She defines homonegativity as hatred, ignorance and judgement towards homosexuality. There will be a panel discussion on the hockey experience for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and gay community. Although MacDonald would argue that hockey itself as a sport is not a leader, she does hold that hockey can be used by leaders to send messages and she believes that is playing out right now in the National Hockey League. While there have been some openly lesbian and transgender hockey players, no one in the NHL has come forward to openly identify with the LGBTQ community. And while the NHL has spoken out against anti-gay slurs on the ice, she believes the repercussions aren’t strong enough.
Dr. Cheryl MacDonald will include a panel discussion on the hockey experience for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and gay community during this summer’s Hockey Conference in Edmonton. (Photo: Shari Narine)
All of this, she says, reinforces the message the public receives about identity from hockey. “I think that when you think about what it means to be extra masculine or manly you can’t necessarily define what it is except to say it’s not feminine, it’s not homosexual because often gay men are stereotyped as being feminine. I think in men’s hockey there’s such a fixation on being manly on that extreme end of the spectrum that there’s just no room for wavering, whereas in women’s hockey the definitions of identity are looser and there are less expectations of you,” said MacDonald. She adds that in 2001 talking about LGBTQ and hockey would not have been considered. “It has absolutely come to the forefront (now).”

Other hockey-related topics MacDonald expects panel discussion to centre on include literature, sociology, physiology, anatomy, business analytics and economics. “Since the NHL is so culturally important we’re able to have very important discussions specifically here in Edmonton,” said MacDonald, who notes the discussion that is taking place on economics and social ramifications with the recent construction and opening of the new Rogers Place, home arena for the Edmonton Oilers. There are those who view the new Ice District as an opportunity for prime real estate and business development, while others are concerned about the displacement of the low income population in that area. To date, two keynote speakers and three guest speakers have been confirmed. Keynote speakers are Harnarayan Singh, who does play-by-play on Hockey Night in Canada in Punjabi, and Gerry Ranking, Jr., of Newport Sports Management Inc., which is the premier representation and management agency of professional hockey players. Guest speakers are Brock McGillis, who played professional hockey in Europe and recently came out as gay; Golden Bear skater Keiron Block, who worked his way back to playing hockey after shattering his legs in a cliff-diving accident; and Erica Kromm, who plays for the Calgary Inferno in the Canadian Women’s Hockey League. MacDonald says she is still trying to secure funding to get two more keynote speakers. MacDonald believes it is important to talk about hockey as more than just the game that is played on ice. “Because we need to think about how to make it better on the ice so all of the challenges we’re facing within the context of the rink, we need to pull back and figure out how to fix those so hockey is more accessible and more enjoyable for those who are participating in it,” she said.
Speakers at the conference to date are (from top left image to bottom right) Karl Subban, Harnarayan Singh, Brock McGillis, Gerry Ranking, Keiran Block, Erica Kromm and Jennifer Botterill. Organizer Cheryl MacDonald is trying to secure additional funding to get two more keynote speakers.

ON AN OFFICIAL Have you officiated Minor Hockey Week, and If so, what makes you volunteer your time as an official? Yes. Gaining volunteer hours for school as well as participating in an intense, passionate, shortened game where every player digs deep and brings an exciting game forth. Any special memories from Minor Hockey Week? Being applauded by the fans after reffing a final. After the last game of Minor Hockey Week, our names were announced over the intercom thanking us for our time and volunteering. All the parents then stood up and applauded us. It was a nice feeling that our time was appreciated by all these parents. It was a very close game. I can’t remember the exact score but I think it was 5-4, and lots of close calls. Do you have any highlights related to any other big games or tournaments you wish to pass along? Same as the last, being able to receive applause was an amazing feeling as generally criticism is mostly all you receive.
Ashwin Kaul BY ROB SUGGITT
PHOTOS PROVIDED BY SC PARKER PHOTOGRAPHY We met up with Ashwin Kaul at Terwillegar Arena, as he was ready to go on ice for a high level bantam game. Ashwin, who turns 17 in April, is currently in Grade 11 at Lillian Osborne High School. In addition to officiating hockey, he plays hockey for the SWZ Oil Kings and his other winter activity is skiing. In his spare time, he also likes tinkering with cars. Ashwin took the time to answer a few questions about why he took up officiating and what he enjoys most about being a young minor hockey official.
When did you start officiating hockey? At 13, this is my fourth season. (Ashwin started playing hockey at six years old.) What made you want to become a hockey official? Being able to take part in a sport that I love in a whole new way was an amazing idea to me. How many games do you plan to officiate this season? Around the same, maybe a few more. What level of hockey are you currently officiating? I have done up to high level midget. I mostly do lines for bantam.
What do you enjoy most about officiating hockey games? Being able to improve my skills and knowledge of the game at all times as well as participating in the game in a new way. What kind of training were/are you provided? At the start of each season, we are required to attend one full day course which outlines all of the rules once again, which is followed by an exam. Do you have a role model or mentor who has helped you along the way? Gary Greenough. I have been working with Gary for the last four seasons. I respect him for his extensive knowledge of the game and his commitment to ensuring all the officials can become as successful as possible. I respect him for the amount of time he has dedicated to making us better officials. How have you improved your skills as an official? Through being a referee, not only has my skate work improved, but so has my knowledge of the game. What do you enjoy most about officiating hockey games? Being able to improve my skills and knowledge of the game at all times as well as participating in the game in a new way. What is the toughest part about being a referee? Receiving criticism from players, coaches and fans. How do you handle criticism on the ice? Generally, I will talk to the player and coach and try to clarify any misconceptions but if the player or coach is persistent I will either choose to ignore it or assess a minor penalty. Do you have any future aspirations in officiating? I would like to progress into becoming a referee in the A program.
