GOVERNMENT & FOUNDATION SUPPORT
Edmonton Opera wishes to acknowledge that the land on which we gather today is Treaty 6 territory and a traditional meeting ground and home for many Indigenous Peoples, including Cree, Saulteaux, Blackfoot, Métis, and Nakota Sioux.
Message from the director Despite the repressive Catholicism of 17th-century inquisitorial Spain, members of the nobility felt free to commit any number of crimes, believing that their status granted them total impunity. One priest, Tirso de Molina, took it upon himself to educate these ‘sinners’ by writing The Libertine of Seville. In the original Don Giovanni, the story’s protagonist is condemned to eternal damnation by the divine order. Obviously, society has evolved over the past 300 years. So why mount Don Giovanni today? In this production, I have tried to inject the character of Don Giovanni with a slightly different identity, one that goes beyond his status as a nobleman. Don Giovanni is a man who has achieved a level of popularity such that nothing is forbidden to him. In this sense, I see Don Giovanni as a matador. Matadors are bona fide celebrities — they regularly make headlines and are applauded and adored by fans. Their prideful attitude is reflective of Don Giovanni’s hubris: matadors defy death, Don Giovanni defies God. Both put their narcissism on
full display and it becomes an integral part of their “performance.” One can easily find parallels between the drama of the bullring and Da Ponte’s storyline. In the corrida, the matador’s colourful costume and cape are an unabashed celebration of light, in stark contrast to the black body of his bovine nemesis. In Don Giovanni, the main character burns brightly in a truthful orgy of earthly pleasures, only to be brought down by hellfire and damnation in accordance with JudeoChristian tradition. But what is the message? No matter what our faults are, if we repent, and above all, if we recognize the supremacy of God, they will be forgiven. It is permissible to question: born in our time, would Don Giovanni have been condemned in the same way? Nevertheless, the concept of the struggle between good and evil is still valid. Lies, deceit, the frantic search for selfish pleasure and above all the abuse of power of the megalomaniacs of this world, whatever they may be, remain. – Oriol Tomas

DON GIOVANNI April 14, 17 & 20, 2018
Born on Jan. 27, 1756 in Salzburg, Austria, the composer Mozart was baptized as Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart. He learned to play the piano by watching his older sister receive lessons from their father, who was a court musician and composer. By the age of five, he was composing and could also play the clarinet and violin. Starting in 1762, Mozart’s father took the two siblings on the first of several European tours, where the children performed in various courts. At the age of 17, Mozart was appointed assistant concertmaster for the Royal Court of Salzburg, but later fell out of favour with the Archbishop von Colloredo when he wanted to find more prosperous employment. This resulted in Mozart relocating to Vienna, where he composed as a freelance musician. He had become accustomed to a lavish lifestyle, however, and coupled with the Austro-Hungarian war, often struggled to pay the bills. He married Constanze Weber in 1782, against the wishes of his father, who felt the marriage would cause an interruption in Mozart’s career. Constanze’s mother strongly encouraged the marriage, however, and the couple wed on Aug. 4, 1782. They had six children, although only two survived infancy. In December 1787, Emperor Joseph II appointed Mozart as his chamber composer — a position that was not only an honour, but intended as incentive to keep Mozart in Vienna. Mozart still travelled, trying to stabilize his finances and popularity, but was unsuccessful. Historians believe that his periods of hysteria, coupled with spells of hectic creativity, may be evidence that he had some form of bipolar disorder. He was quite productive between 1790 and 1791, however, producing works that revived much of his public notoriety. Mozart died of illness on Dec. 4, 1791, in Vienna. Despite the speculation surrounding his death, including poisoning by the Italian composer Salieri, historians suggest there is little evidence to prove that Mozart and Salieri’s relationship was anything more than a professional rivalry. Mozart was buried in a common grave, which was standard at the time for most Viennese, and the exact location remains unknown. Even by 16th-century standards, Mozart died at a young age. And yet, in half a lifetime, he composed over 600 pieces of music, including operas, symphonies, concertos and single pieces for the piano — there were few branches of music he did not touch.

SYNOPSIS
Act One
Act Two
Outside the Commendatore’s house at night, Leporello grumbles about his duties as servant to Don Giovanni, a nobleman. Soon Don Giovanni appears from the house, being chased by Donna Anna, the soon-to-be-married woman he has tried to force himself on. The Commendatore (Anna’s father) enters and challenges Giovanni to a duel. Giovanni kills the old man and runs away.
Outside Elvira’s house, Don Giovanni and Leporello
Anna enters with fiancé Don Ottavio and discovers the Commendatore’s dead body. Beside herself with grief, she makes Ottavio swear vengeance on the mysterious man who killed her father. Giovanni meets a beautiful woman on the street and begins to flirt with her. She turns out to be Donna Elvira, a woman he had previously seduced and who was now following him around trying to find out why he had left her. Leporello creates a distraction by talking to Elvira about the thousands of women his boss had ‘conquered’ while Giovanni makes a prompt escape. Giovanni arrives at a party where people are celebrating the wedding of Zerlina and Masetto, a young working-class couple. Giovanni flirts with the bride and angers Masetto, who is quickly taken away by Leporello. Now alone with Zerlina, Giovanni turns on the charm. Elvira, however, charges into the scene and exposes his lying ways to Zerlina. Anna and Ottavio have a chance encounter with Giovanni, who predictably begins to flirt with Anna. Elvira returns and denounces Giovanni as a cheat once again, but Giovanni declares her a madwoman and leads her away. As he is leaving, Anna recognizes Giovanni’s voice — this was the man who assaulted her and then killed her father. Don Giovanni throws a party for Zerlina and Masetto and gets copiously drunk. Zerlina apologizes to her husband for being drawn to Giovanni. Anna, Ottavio, and Elvira arrive at the party as Giovanni manages to isolate Zerlina. Her cries for help bring everyone to the scene and Ottavio confronts Giovanni. Though he tries to blame Leporello, Giovanni convinces no one and is forced to make a run for it.
exchange clothes and Leporello woos Elvira. Giovanni is now free to charm Elvira’s maid. But an angry mob led by Masetto soon arrives looking for the villain. Giovanni, dressed as Leporello, points them in the wrong direction. He then isolates Masetto and beats him up. Zerlina arrives and comforts her distressed husband.
Leporello (dressed as Giovanni) and Elvira are alone together when Anna, Ottavio, Zerlina, and Masetto show up and threaten Leporello, thinking he is Giovanni. Leporello flees, leaving Elvira feeling betrayed again. Don Giovanni is at a cemetery. Leporello rushes in and they change back to their own clothes. Suddenly, a ghost of the Commendatore at the cemetery begins to talk: it warns Giovanni of his impending doom. Giovanni brushes it off and even invites the ghostly figure to dinner at his house. The ghost accepts. Anna is still mourning her father’s death. She wants to delay her marriage to Ottavio until Giovanni is brought to justice. At Giovanni’s house, dinnertime is interrupted by Elvira coming in and trying to convince him to change for the better. Giovanni dismisses her. As Elvira exits, her screams are heard, announcing the arrival of the Commendatore’s ghost. The ghost orders Don Giovanni to repent, but he defies the supernatural force. As a result, the entire house is set ablaze and the gates to hell open up, sending Giovanni into a pit of eternal suffering and damnation.
50/50 tickets can be purchased in the main lobby and on the first balcony prior to the performance and during intermission. The winning ticket will be displayed at the end of the performance at the Jubilee exit doors. Thank you for your support of the arts in Edmonton! Those attending the Friday night performance are invited to take home one of the floral arrangements courtesy of Hole’s Greenhouses, in exchange for a donation to the Edmonton Opera. Please visit the main lobby on Friday if interested.

by stephan bonfield In an age of righteous indignation and hostility toward those men in powerful positions who have used their influence to get whatever they want, it should hardly seem improbable that an opera has already been written about just that topic, long foreshadowing the #MeToo and Times Up movements. In some ways, Mozart and Da Ponte’s Don Giovanni based on a long-worn hackneyed theme (indeed, it was already so by Mozart’s time) has perhaps predicted our social movements today. Mozart’s enduring musical masterpiece and character study of the Don provides remarkable historical commentary about the conduct of such men. Indeed, the roots toward understanding the libretto’s salty depictions of a man’s unstoppable depravity, and the opera’s splendid musical text painting are to be found in the genre’s history itself and how the opera came to be. Don Giovanni is a dramma giocoso, literally a comedy-drama, somewhat different in sensibility from the buffo antics of its groundbreaking forerunner Marriage of Figaro. Dramma giocoso carefully overlaid both genres and was frequently the norm in Italian opera of the time. Composer and librettist relished the chance to mix dramatically difficult with comically improbable situations, such as juxtaposing Leporello’s Catalogue aria with Donna Elvira’s disconsolate feelings at being rejected by the Don, who had promised to marry her. Yet, the Don is not just hurtful and harmful, he is the archetypical cad of the worst sort, so how can someone who so licentiously contributes to the destruction of women’s lives be even remotely comical? To answer that question we need to examine the circumstances under which the opera was composed. After the immense success of Marriage of Figaro in 1786, Pasquale Bondini, impresario of the Prague Opera, commissioned Mozart for a new opera in 1787 to celebrate the marriage of the Emperor’s niece, the Archduchess Maria Teresa. Da Ponte, who had seen Gazzaniga’s Don Giovanni on Bertati’s one-act libretto, apparently told Mozart he thought the composer could do a better job and that he (Da Ponte) would write a better libretto (Da Ponte apparently disliked his rival Bertati intensely). Da Ponte expanded Bertati’s libretto, itself based on Molière’s study of the Don, into two acts adding greater psychological depth to the characterizations. Da Ponte further supplied Mozart with his favourite dramatic devices for the composer to work with — intrigue and social commentary. Moreover, he made the women more bold and clearly defined:
Donna Anna was the parta seria, Zerlina the comic servant-class buffa, and the most complex was the mezzo carettere Donna Elvira, a blend of comic and tragic elements. Da Ponte’s literary expansion of the libretto, while keeping the most basic elements of Bertati’s original and borrowing lines from both Bertati and Molière, allowed Mozart to write arias in three different linguistic types. Most remarkable of all was how Mozart would blend all three character genres together in the astonishing Act I finale when three separate dance types are heard simultaneously, evocative of three different social classes and their musical-dramatic languages. Throughout Act I, sashaying and dancing meanderingly amid them all defying social conventions of all the classes, would be the the at-once charming, but all-too deplorable Don Giovanni himself, set musically and dramatically in dramatic counterpoint to stunning music. Today we would simply call the Don a sociopath and diagnose him with a variety of psychological disorders, chief among them, narcissism. In Mozart and Da Ponte’s vision, The Don would be a controlling figure who ruins the lives of all he encounters, providing the opera with multiple opportunities for musical and literary commentary not only on human nature but how far society is prepared to tolerate such destructive narcissism. It is precisely such inherent tensions in the opera that fascinated the nineteenth century, making Don Giovanni the most popular opera of the Romantic Era. The essential conflicts of the Don’s compulsive libertine nature, for which he defiantly will not apologize, and for which he will ultimately be condemned, are key elements that still fascinate us today. For Edmonton Opera, Director Oriol Tomas has placed a new spin on the Don with an interesting contemporary twist that aligns well with the legend of the Don as compulsive abuser. In his version, Don Giovanni is not a nobleman rather he is a celebrity with popularity-conferred status, in this case a matador in Seville. He ultimately is a man who believes he can do whatever he wishes and use whomever he wishes in any manner he chooses, the true definition of a libertine. Moreover, Tomas makes the women not merely the Don’s victims, but instead chillingly and effectively, the Don’s judges of his actions. And as the Me Too and Time’s Up movements gather steam, one wonders if and when the same fate will befall men of similar celebrity status today.
