CHAIR
Plans for next season’s performances of The Barber of Seville, The Magic Flute and Lucia di Lammermoor are well underway. I am particularly proud that the company is able to offer a season that features wonderful bel canto (beautiful singing) in our season of Great Escapes. Next year you will have some treats: we offer the EO debut of maestro William Eddins conducting his own Edmonton Symphony Orchestra in Mozart’s The Magic Flute, we have the return of Brian Deedrick who will direct his first production of Lucia di Lammermoor with his well-loved sensitivity and elan, and we have the debut of up-and-coming Canadian talent Simone Osborne in the role of Lucia. You can subscribe online at edmontonopera.com. Our 2013/14 season closes with Opera al Fresco, at the University of Alberta’s Devonian Botanic Garden on Friday, June 20. This relaxing evening in a sublime garden setting features a mini-opera performed by the EO Children’s Chorus from the Victoria School of the Arts. This new children’s opera, written by Mark Morris and composed by Samantha Semler, is inspired by a Japanese folktale similar to Rumpelstiltskin. We also hope that you enjoy the rest of the evening wandering through the gardens, accompanied by other operatic favourites and musical offerings. Our production facility also allows Edmonton Opera to engage with the local arts community on the technical side of production. Both Opera NUOVA and Free Will Players are building sets in our shops, and props, costumes and equipment continue to be loaned to various companies in Edmonton. Thank you for supporting Edmonton Opera in our continuing contributions to the quality of life in Edmonton. I would also encourage you to check out the Opera NUOVA Vocal Arts Festival, running until June 29. NUOVA continues to present talented, emerging professional singers in performances of high artistic standards. Performances this year include the high Cs — Cendrillon (Massenet), Candide (Bernstein) and Carmen (Bizet). Whether it is enjoying Opera al Fresco or Opera NUOVA’s summer festival, watching live broadcasts or planning to attend our 2014/15 season, opportunities to experience opera all year long exist in abundance, and we are thrilled to be a part of it.

KURIMOTO JAPANESE GARDEN THE CARPENTER AND THE ONIROKU
THE STORY
INTRODUCTION
However, when he inspects the river, he declares no one could build a bridge across it. The chorus are not amused. At that moment, a person appears who claims he can build it — it is the Oniroku (which can be translated as “the sixth demon”). The Carpenter scoffs at him, but, under pressure from the chorus, agrees to a deal: if the mysterious person can build it, then the Carpenter will have to guess his name or forfeit his eyeballs.
by Samantha Semler and Mark Morris The Carpenter: Iain Gillis (tenor) Oniroku: Bertrand Malo (bass-baritone) Edmonton Opera Children’s Chorus Percussion: Brian Jones, Samuel Malowany Keyboard: Bryan LeGrow Bell: Jess Gillis Conductor: Janice Tole
The Carpenter and the Oniroku has been specially written for the Edmonton Opera Children’s Chorus to perform in this year’s Opera al Fresco. It has also been specifically written for the venue, the Devonian Botanic Garden’s Japanese Garden. It’s therefore based on a traditional Japanese folktale, and takes into account both the opportunities and the limitations of such a lovely outdoor setting. One of the delights of the story is that it doesn’t really have a moral (though good prevails!), but is simply an entertaining tale — just right for a summer’s evening. We call it a mini-opera, because it is an opera, but it’s a deliberately short one. The most important criterion was to give the children of the chorus the chance to perform their own opera, and to have fun doing it. But we also wanted to have a mix of seasoned professionals and young musicians working with and alongside the children, since everyone learns when that happens. So the opera was written with that in mind as well, and our complete company ranges from age nine to those in their 60s.
A group of disgruntled people (played by the chorus) are stuck on the bank of a river. They want to get to the other side (there are festivities soon to begin there), but they have been unable to cross the water. Along comes a Carpenter, who claims he is a master bridge builder, and he will build them a bridge to get across.
Magically, the Oniroku creates a bridge across the river. The chorus are delighted, and the Carpenter is horrified. Desperately he tries to guess the stranger’s name, while the chorus suggest he will have to give up his eyeballs …
THE EDMONTON OPERA CHILDREN’S CHORUS
The Edmonton Opera Children’s Chorus was formed two years ago in a joint project between Edmonton Opera and Victoria School of the Arts, under chorus director Janice Tole. The children are all pupils at the school, from grades 4 to 6. They performed at Opera al Fresco in 2012, and since then have taken part in various events, including Edmonton Opera’s 50th anniversary celebrations. Individual members of the chorus have been involved in Edmonton Opera’s mainstage productions, but this is the first time the chorus will have performed a complete opera, and one specially written for them in which they are the main protagonists.

In 1997 she co-founded KidsOp, to create new operas for children and adults to perform, and since then has been musical director of a number of operas and workshops. Highlights include conducting the Canadian premiere production of Mervyn Burtch’s The Raven King, a full-length opera for children and adults which was the mainstage production of the 1999 Banff Festival, and which drew together adults from Canada, Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom, together with 84 children from Wetaskiwin. She teaches at Victoria School of the Arts, and has recently completed a M.Ed which studied how Canadian opera companies interact with children in their communities.

Construction In an interview, opera singer Renee Fleming
noted that today’s technology provides so many ways for people to experience opera, offering an understanding as to why people have loved this art form for hundreds of years.
Sponsorship can also be added to that list, as Raywalt Construction president Ron Johnson has discovered. “It just started as a sponsorship, and to me, that’s fine,” said Johnson, whose company is the title sponsor of Opera al Fresco at the Devonian Botanic Garden in June. “But it’s becoming something that people actually appreciate.” Johnson has been invited to attend operas previously, and now that Raywalt is more involved with Edmonton Opera, he has found opera discussions in previously unexpected places.
Based in Acheson, most of the company’s employees — 18 permanent staff, which expands to 170 staff seasonally — commute from the greater Edmonton area. The company supports a number of charitable organizations, including events for the Cross Cancer Institute, the Canadian Diabetes Association, Kids with Cancer, CapitalCare, the United Way, the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada and many others.
“One of the fellows that we’ve invited [to Opera al Fresco], it’s a subcontractor that we use, and I had no idea that he used to be in the opera, when he was going to university,” Johnson said.
“We’re always looking to do things together [as a company], and quite often it’s related to sponsoring a charitable organization, and that brings our people together on those occasions,” Johnson said.
Raywalt Construction, an underground utilities contractor, celebrated its 35th anniversary in March. Johnson has been with the company since 1980, becoming an owner in 2004.
“I think [sponsorship] is very important,” he continued. “I think it’s a corporate responsibility to do that. We’re living in a pretty good economy here, so we need to give back.”
Celebrating 35 years Three decades of reliability and innovative solutions in subdivision servicing, project management, general contracting, sewer and water transmission mains, and all types of heavy equipment projects.

Rossini
the barber
Before Bugs Bunny, there was another quick-thinking, wily character with outrageous schemes. And in some of their most famous escapades — albeit roughly 130 years apart — Giachino Rossini’s chattering rhythms and energetic melodies accompany the antics of both Figaro, the meddlesome hairstylist in The Barber of Seville, and Looney Tunes’ wascally wabbit. “Rossini is famous for his musical wit,” said Robert Dean, who will conduct the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra during Edmonton Opera’s October 2014 production. “For many people — including myself as an eight-year-old — it is their first introduction to opera, and I can’t think of a better one. It maintains a manically fast pace throughout its duration and there is never a dull moment, either musically or dramatically.” Disguised as the poor student Lindoro, Count Almaviva hopes to win the heart of the film starlet Rosina, but he must first contend with the movie studio owner Bartolo, who also wants to marry Rosina. It’s only through some hair-brained plots by Figaro and blistering recitative that the girl ends up with the right guy. The vocal gesture that Rossini wrote into his composition was no accident though, said Stephan Bonfield, a musicologist and research associate with the University of Calgary in auditory behaviour and neurophysiology. “We have to understand that in Neapolitan theatre, people talked during performances,” Bonfield said. “And even into Rossini’s day, it was normal to carry on a casual conversation in some parts of the theatre — not all of them, but some. So if you have to get people to shut up, what better way than to write an incredibly virtuosic piece?” As bel canto literally translates to “beautiful singing,” Dean said it seemed only natural that he take an interest and develop a speciality in the time period, as he was a professional singer for 10 years and continues to be interested in vocal technique and vocal writing styles. 26 summer magazine
of seville
In his role as the maestro for The Barber of Seville, he noted that it is imperative that the conductor breathes with the singer and understands the vocal mechanisms and demands. “You spend a lot of time accompanying the singer and giving them time to express themselves through their voice, as well as giving them the orchestral cushion to sing on,” Dean said, estimating he’s conducted more than 100 productions of Barber. Even so, he is already thinking about how to approach this piece differently than the last time he conducted it, in 2007. (Previously, he was in Edmonton in 2009 to conduct EO’s The Pearl Fishers.) “In rehearsal, I try to encourage the singers to feel spontaneity in their approach to the music,” Dean continued. “After all, it demands of the singers a sense of improvisation of the vocal line, sometimes literally, which must in no way sound planned.” Even the overture doesn’t give away much of the plot. Using the overture to preview the opera’s themes was more commonly used by the 19th-century Italian composers, Verdi in particular, Bonfield explained. Rossini actually borrowed the overture for The Barber of Seville from one of his previous operas, using it to establish the mood without hinting specifically at recurring melodies. There are unique moments of musical genius that the audience should definitely listen for, Dean said. “He invented the Rossini crescendo, a repetition of a rhythmic musical figure over many bars gradually getting louder — the obvious example in this piece is the enormous crescendo in Don Basilio’s slander aria where the gathering of the gossip is reflected in the increasing dynamic of the orchestra. “The ensembles are inspired, the finale of Act 1 over a one-minute span is one of the masterpieces of comic opera as the plot becomes ever more involved, and to which Rossini responds with real flair — and to think this opera took him less than three weeks to write!” Rossini knew what he was doing, in all aspects of the piece, Bonfield said, adding that Rossini was influenced by both German
and Italian composers, and had a good understanding of theatrical tradition. The combination results in polyphonic musicality and poly-rhythmicity that was absolutely unsurpassed. At the end of the day, “The man [Almaviva] is in love,” Bonfield said. “And that’s what I think Rossini blends well. He blends a lot of the serious and the comic, the high, middle and low features, all together really well, but also in the same aria, and even more to an extent than Mozart ever did.” “I think that the one thing about Rossini that is infectious is rhythm,” he continued. “You have to go to Barber because the rhythms are
just unlike anything you’ll find in any other opera. Conductor Robert Dean
“There’s no doubt it can be such a driving, but not pounding, rhythmically inflected and fun, dynamic piece. It’s not just about great melody or great show-stoppers — of which there are so many in this opera, and everyone’s got a show-stopper, every character gets their voice — but to me, it’s always going to be the virtuosity of being able to sing so quickly, and rapid. The Barber of Seville is the acme of that kind of rhythm and that kind of virtuoso pattern that you just don’t find anywhere else.”
“You have to go to Barber because the rhythms are just unlike anything you’ll find in any other opera.”

Rob hood fund
The Edmonton Opera is the grateful recipient of a generous gift from the Rob Hood Fund. Mr. Hood’s direction was that these legacy funds be used to attract operatic singers of the highest calibre. The first gift from the Rob Hood Fund was an award to Metropolitan Opera stars Angela Brown and Carl Tanner, who were two of the lead singers in Aida. Our second gift was committed to renowned soprano Anne Sophie Duprels, who appeared in the lead role of Madama Butterfly in April 2014. Butterfly was the first opera ever performed by Edmonton Opera in 1963 and part of its inaugural season, so this was a most apt acknowledgement of the company’s legacy in its 50th anniversary season. Dr. Irving Guttman, artistic director emeritus of the Edmonton Opera, shares his memories of Mr. Hood.
“I first met Robert when he joined our chorus in 1965. Two things were clear between us, we both loved opera and while he was serious and dedicated about his singing, we agreed that it was important to pursue one’s passions but not necessarily aspire to singing on the Met stage. He contributed to Edmonton Opera as both a board and guild member. That said, I believe his work in our chorus was seminal to his fine appreciation of the power and presence of the human voice. With his personal experience as a bass, his respect grew for the voices of the operatic greats of the time. He liked to call it ‘fine singing!’ “Rob was very principled in his belief that there were certain ways to do things, which extended to being a rather private person, to dressing properly and to being immensely loyal to his friends and colleagues. “Aside from his avocation, Rob was well placed in his work with the Alberta government’s culture portfolio. He was always committed to high standards, personally and professionally, and I am certain those were valued qualities in his work, thus making him known and respected in the arts community in the province and beyond.”

PLANNED GIVING by SHELLY K. CHAMASCHUK It takes a lifetime to build up an estate, and yet it seems little time, in comparison, is
spent to determine what should happen with an estate after passing. Everyone is encouraged to put a will in place to ensure that the distribution of their estate is properly planned. A basic will can be done, leaving your estate to your family and those who matter to you. However, you may also wish to consider the ability to continue to give back to the community by leaving a charitable gift in your will. A charitable gift leaves money or other assets to those organizations which have given you joy, such as the opera. This would be such a wonderful legacy to you and a thoughtful way to give back on your way out. There is also a significant tax benefit to charitable gifts.
