EDMONTON OPERA 2013/2014 SEASON SALOME Richard Strauss

October 25 • 27 • 29 • 31, 2013 Undercurrents of dysfunction and danger boil to the surface as Salome’s interest in King Herod’s prisoner escalates from curiosity to obsession. The prophet Jokaanan mocks the biblical court from his subterranean cell, fuelling her interest. For distraction, Salome’s lecherous stepfather desires her attentions, promising anything she wishes if she performs the Dance of the Seven Veils. But what she wants is the prophet’s head on a silver platter. Scandalous, seductive and shocking, the Edmonton Opera opens its 50th anniversary season with Richard Strauss’ haunting opera.

DIE FLEDERMAUS Johann Strauss II

January 31, 2014 • February 2 • 4 • 6, 2014 Gabriel von Eisenstein has been sentenced to a fortnight in jail, but his confinement is preceded by an evening of mistaken identity. At a masked ball, two old flames reunite and flirtations occur between a woman and her husband who don’t recognize each other. One man’s elaborate plan for revenge results in a comedy of errors, accompanied by some of opera’s most catchy music.

MADAMA BUTTERFLY Giacomo Puccini April 4 • 6 • 8 • 10, 2014

To a U.S. naval lieutenant and his Japanese bride, a marriage contract has drastically different meanings. What begins as an idyllic partnership splinters into a three-year separation, where Cio-Cio-San and her son, Trouble, wait patiently for Lieutenant Pinkerton’s return. Upon his return, the fact that he has returned with an American wife is first discovered by Cio-Cio-San’s maid. When Cio-Cio-San guesses the truth, she agrees to give up her child, if Pinkerton returns for the child. The poignant tragedy ends as Madama Butterfly makes a heartbreaking decision. Closing their 50th anniversary season, is the work that opened the Edmonton Opera in October 1963.
