TABLE OF CONTENTS
Fidelio. We are delighted that you are with us tonight, experiencing this powerful operatic performance.
Tonight you’ll see a story about the wrongfully imprisoned Florestan and his devoted wife, Leonore, who is a symbol of loyalty, love and devotion. The opera took over ten years to write and its empowering music is often referred to as a religion of humanity and an appeal to our conscience. The story remains a relevant subject today as it was in 1805 when it was first performed. Joining us in the leading role is German soprano Maida Hundeling, making her Canadian debut.

FRANCIS PRICE MARGUERITE TRUSSLER
This production of Fidelio is sponsored by two of Edmonton Opera’s most dedicated patrons,
Francis Price and Marguerite Trussler. Their contribution to the Arts goes back more than 35 years, to 1974 – the year they began their life together here in Edmonton. Marguerite, who was born and raised in Edmonton and Calgary, met Francis in Australia. Together they returned to Edmonton on New Year’s Eve 1973. Despite being greeted by snow that reached the rooftops and -35°C temperatures, they weren’t deterred. For Marguerite this was home, and for Francis it was a place with which he instantly connected. Three weeks after arriving, the couple received tickets to La Traviata starring José Carreras, who made his North American debut here in Edmonton. Francis and Marguerite have been Opera patrons ever since. Marguerite began her involvement with Edmonton Opera as a board member in 1975, and has been recognized for her active involvement and dedication over the years. Francis started singing in the Opera’s chorus in 1988, and since then, has appeared in over thirty productions. His presence in the chorus – in productions, on television or in Edmonton Opera flash mobs – continues. In 2006-2008 he was Chair of the Opera Board. Through Marguerite’s and Francis’ combined efforts, many people have been introduced to the world of Opera. The couple give tickets as gifts, extend personal invitations to friends and acquaintances, and promote Opera throughout our city. They also support the Opera NUOVA, the Citadel Theatre and other Edmonton Theatre companies, the Players de Novo and the Victoria School of the Arts, where Marguerite founded the Victoria School Foundation for the Arts and helped raise an endowment fund to provide scholarships for aspiring young artists. Francis and Marguerite open their home to international artists and host dinner parties and recitals to attract new donors and sponsorships to Edmonton Opera. They have also been instrumental in the success of the Edmonton Opera Endowment Fund, which has raised over $2.5 million, providing Edmonton Opera with long-term tools to do exceptional work. When you ask Francis what it is about Opera that captivates him, he says “Opera is the most complete form of theatre: acting, singing, movement and music – it’s all there. On a cold night, after work, there is nothing better than escaping to the South Pacific, or ancient Egypt (or even a sunless underground dungeon in Fidelio) – you have to try it! Opera shapes our community, and having this amazing art form in our city is invaluable.” Edmonton Opera thanks Francis Price and Marguerite Trussler for their constant support and dedication. Their passion and involvement truly shape the Arts scene in our community, making Edmonton an exceptional place to live. FIDELIO 9

OPERA al FRESCO
The seeds of the idea for a midsummer’s eve Opera garden party were sprouted in the darkest days of winter, when a group of singers were performing at the Devonian Botanic Garden’s annual December event Luminaria. The idea of Opera performances scattered throughout the Garden, with stops along the way for nibbles and refreshments in a bright and beautiful summer day.
Opera outside, opera on a beautiful evening in June when the light stretches and the Garden is exuberant and green. The sharing of opera pieces familiar and beloved, to give a taste to the uninitiated and a reminder to those who’ve loved it all along. Pared-down opera, with grass as a stage, a Japanese Garden as an auditorium, a pond as a backdrop and the Alberta sky as a roof. Opera al Fresco. A partnership was formed. Together, Edmonton Opera and Devonian Botanic Garden worked to create an event that was accessible, pleasurable and a delight for the senses, that would encourage people who had never taken in an Opera before to give it a try, and to give those who’d never been to the Garden a great reason to experience it. June 22, 2012 marks the third season for Opera al Fresco. When planning started for the first event in 2010, in the short days of winter solstice, there was no way to tell if a stroll through a Garden with opera and appetizers and refreshments would appeal to our audiences, though our suspicion that it might prove popular was born out when, in its first year, Opera al Fresco sold out. In year two, with a few logistical tweaks, we were able to offer more tickets. The event sold out again. For 2012, a free park-and-ride shuttle will be added so that we can expand our capacity further. With the wonderful Edmonton Opera Children’s Chorus adding another dimension to the evening, we expect another sold out event, and another summer garden party to remember. Tickets for Opera al Fresco are on sale now at the Opera box office (780) 429-1000 or online at www.edmontonopera.com/events

BIOGRAPHY
LUDWIG van BEETHOVEN (1770-1827) Ludwig van Beethoven was born in 1770 in the German city of Bonn. The son of a musical family, Beethoven began practicing music at a very young age where it was clear that he had significant musical talent. Unfortunately his father struggled with alcoholism and at an early age Beethoven became the means of supporting the family. When only seventeen, his mother died. His musical talents eventually drew him to Vienna where he became well known as a pianist and composer. Beethoven taught piano lessons, performed and composed pieces for wealthy patrons. His work grew in popularity and after a decade in Vienna he had composed a variety of works including piano sonatas, string quartets, symphonies, piano concertos and a ballet. He was a very hard worker, extremely ambitions, and although very talented he was often a perfectionist and dissatisfied with his work. In his late twenties, Beethoven’s hearing began deteriorating. The problem worsened until he became completely deaf and as a result often withdrew himself from society, limiting his personal interactions. However, even with complete deafness Beethoven continued conducting, composing and performing. He even began exploring new and interesting musical styles in his composition. With many societal changes in the early 19th century of Europe, including the American and French revolutions, Beethoven drew inspiration from the ideals of liberty, equality and brotherhood. Using instruments in new ways and creating uncustomary patterns, Beethoven was sometimes critiqued for his unusual musical style. He died of pneumonia in 1827 at the age of 56. Today, he remains one of the most important classical composers of all time who influenced countless talented composers after him such as Schubert, Brahms and Wagner.

SYNOPSIS Act I Spain, eighteenth century. In a prison, Marzelline, daughter of the jailer, Rocco, rejects the attentions of her father’s assistant, Jacquino, who hopes to marry her. Her heart is set instead on the new errand boy, Fidelio. The latter, a hardworking lad, arrives with provisions and dispatches and is distressed by Marzelline’s interest in him, especially since it has the blessing of Rocco. Fidelio is in fact Leonore, a noblewoman of Seville who has come to the jail disguised as a boy to find her husband, Florestan, a political prisoner languishing somewhere in chains. When Rocco mentions a man lying near death in the vaults below, Leonore, suspecting it might be Florestan, begs Rocco to take her on his rounds. He agrees, though the governor of the prison, Don Pizarro, allows only Rocco in the lower levels of the dungeon. As soldiers assemble in the courtyard, Pizarro learns from the dispatches brought to him that Don Fernando, minister of state, is on his way to inspect the fortress. At this news the governor resolves to kill Florestan, his enemy, without delay and orders Rocco to dig a grave for the victim in the dungeon. Leonore, overhearing his plan, realizes Pizarro’s evil nature and the plight of his victim. After praying for strength to save her husband and keep up hope, she again begs Rocco to let her accompany him to the condemned man’s cell – and also to allow the other prisoners a few moments of air in the courtyard. The gasping men relish their glimpse of freedom but are ordered back by Pizarro, who hurries Rocco off to dig Florestan’s grave. With apprehension, Leonore follows him into the dungeon.
Act II In one of the lowest cells of the prison, Florestan dreams he sees Leonore arrive to free him. But his vision turns to despair, and he sinks down exhausted. Rocco and Leonore arrive and begin digging the grave. Florestan awakens, not recognizing his wife, and Leonore almost loses her composure at the familiar sound of his voice. Florestan moves the jailer to offer him a drink, and Leonore gives him a bit of bread, urging him not to lose faith. Rocco then blows on his whistle to signal Pizarro that all is ready. The governor advances with dagger drawn to strike, but Leonore stops him with a pistol. At this moment a trumpet sounds from the battlements: Don Fernando has arrived. Rocco leads Pizarro out to meet him as Leonore and Florestan rejoice in each other’s arms. In the prison courtyard, Don Fernando proclaims justice for all. He is amazed when Rocco brings his friend Florestan before him and relates the details of Leonore’s heroism. Pizarro is arrested, and Leonore herself removes Florestan’s chains. The other prisoners too are freed, and the crowd hails Leonore.

PROGRAM NOTES
FIDELIO
Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) How entirely characteristic of Beethoven that his only opera should so stand out among its contemporaries, a work belonging to the period, but so different in its sentiments! Of course Fidelio displays some clear characteristics of early 19th-century opera – the essential story is a love story, as Leonore seeks to find her imprisoned husband. The convenient twists and turns of the plot, almost as unlikely as those in Il trovatore, are in the finest operatic vein, and the device of the ‘travesty’ role – the woman (and soprano) Leonore disguised as a man, Fidelio – has plenty of 19th-century operatic counterparts. But underneath this operatic surface lies a substratum that is entirely Beethovenian, iconoclastic, and overtly political. The result is an enigma, an opera whose agenda goes far beyond any musical parameters. Perhaps only Verdi comes close to repeating this mixture, in his earlier operas, but Verdi lacks the political passion, the deep conviction, that runs through so much of Beethoven’s work. To find the origins of this, we have to look back to Beethoven’s experience as a student. In 1789 he enrolled in Bonn University, the most enlightened of the German universities. There Beethoven almost certainly attended the lectures on the ideas and ideals of the French Revolution by Eulogious Schneider, whose comment “One year of freedom is more use to mankind than a century of despotism, for despotism stifles thought in the mind and virtue in the heart” could stand as a motto for Beethoven himself. It was an enlightened period in Vienna, too, under the reforming rule of Emperor Joseph II. But he died in 1790 – Beethoven wrote a cantata on his death, with the line “Then all mankind rose up into the daylight” set to a motif later used in Fidelio – but the accession of Leopold, and even more of the devout Catholic Franz II on Leopold’s death in 1792, completely changed the political landscape. It was a time of great repression in Austria: the Emperor became paranoid about plots, all discussion of ‘democracy’ was brutally repressed, and anyone with the slightest taint of Jacobin ideas was imprisoned, often in truly (and intentionally) dreadful conditions. In 1792 Beethoven returned to Vienna, and shortly afterwards Napoleon started his meteoric career, invading Italy in 1796 to free it for the Revolution. The Austrian Emperor immediately called up troops to go and fight the French, and Beethoven was torn between his admiration for the Revolution and Napoleon (which found its most profound expression in the ‘Eroica’ Symphony) and his sense of patriotism. He compromised by writing a song, Farewell to Vienna’s Citizens, supporting the troops rather than the actions. In 1797 Napoleon invaded Austria (Beethoven set some half-hearted patriotic Austrian verses – ‘Let us follow these our banners’), and among the stipulations of the subsequent peace treaty was a clause that Austrians had to release the revolutionary Count Lafayette, who had been kept in a dungeon in Olmutz castle for four years, and who was part of the inspiration for the figure of Florestan. Shortly after this, Beethoven made his ideals clear in a letter to his friend Franz Wegeler: “If conditions are improved in our land, my art will be used for the good of the poor.”
16 FIDELIO
by Mark Morris However, in May 1804 Beethoven’s admiration for Napoleon was shattered by Napoleon’s elevation to Emperor, and he slashed out the dedication to Napoleon on the score of the ‘Eroica’ symphony. But by then he had started on Fidelio, and his disillusion did not change his underlying sympathies. The story is drawn from a French play, apparently based on true events, that had been turned into an opera by Pierre Gaveaux in 1798, and then in 1804 by the Italian Ferdinando Paer, whom both Beethoven and Napoleon admired. Fidelio’s libretto was by the Austrian translator of the play, Joseph Sonnleithner. Beethoven wrote it in the countryside outside Vienna, as food shortages, riots, and further repression gripped the city under the threat of renewed fighting with the French. The premiere, set for October 15th, 1805, was banned by the censors – not surprisingly given its theme – but the enterprising Sonnleithner persuaded them that the Empress herself was interested in the opera, and they did not dare risk her wrath. The opera was premiered on November 13th in Schikaneder’s Theater an der Wein. However, two days before that the French army had walked into Vienna, and the first night audience was almost entirely composed of French officers. One wonders what they thought of an opera whose theme of repression was so graphically portrayed in the three layers of the castle where it is set: the ground floor, with its sunlight (Act 1), the second level down where the majority of prisoners are kept in dark cells, and then the near-total darkness of the deepest level, with its dungeon for prisoners of state, and where Florestan has been kept for two years. Although he never lost his republican and reform convictions, Beethoven eventually saw Napoleon as a despot, and his gargantuan Wellington’s Victory symphony (1813), celebrating the Battle of Vitoria, was quite easily his most popular work in his lifetime, even if it is forgotten today. More pertinent, Fidelio, after a number of revisions, was a triumphant success at the premiere on May 23rd, 1814, of the version we usually hear today. Does all this matter to our appreciation of the opera? Perhaps not – it can be enjoyed for its story of a loyal wife rescuing her husband, and above all for its marvellous music. But its cry for freedom and the end of oppression not only has its echoes in 20th-century opera (Janáček’s The House of the Dead, or Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth, to name but two) but, with the all-too horrific repressions of the 20th-century, and, alas, the 21st, its underlying message is as potent today as it was at its premiere in 1805. “We welcome this day of deliverance, after so many hopeless years,” sing the chorus at the end. How often we have heard that in our recent world events.

ROB HOOD FUND
The Edmonton Opera recently received a very generous gift from the Rob Hood Fund. Mr. Hood’s direction was that the Edmonton Opera use the legacy funds to attract operatic singers of the highest calibre. Dr. Irving Guttman is the Artistic Director Emeritus of the Edmonton Opera. He was instrumental in its formation and early success. Dr. Guttman shared his memories of Mr. Hood.
“I first met Robert when he joined our chorus in 1965. Two things were clear between us, we
both loved opera and while he was serious and dedicated about his singing, we agreed that it was important to pursue one’s passions but not necessarily aspire to singing on the Met stage! He contributed to Edmonton Opera as a both a board and guild member. That said, I believe his work in our chorus was seminal to his fine appreciation of the power and presence of the human voice. With his personal experience as a base, his respect grew for the voices of the operatic greats of the time. He liked to call it ‘fine singing’! Aside from his avocation, Rob was well placed in his work with the Alberta Government’s culture portfolio. He was always committed to high standards, personally and professionally and I am certain those were valued qualities in his work thus making him known and respected in the arts community in the province and beyond. Rob loved fine things and was very sensitive to beauty in all its forms. He was also very principled in his belief that there were certain ways to do things, which extended to being a rather private person, to dressing properly and to being immensely loyal to his friends and colleagues.
Rob generously endowed a fund in his name to the Edmonton
What a fine legacy. His wish was that the fund be used to attract and support “fine singing”…dedicated to bringing some of opera’s leading voices to Edmonton so we can all appreciate their Opera.
immense talents and operatic presence. It is my pleasure to announce that the first ever gifts from the Rob Hood fund are awarded to Metropolitan Opera star Angela Brown and leading tenor and former truck driver, Carl Tanner, two of the leads in our production of Aida…Angela in the role of Aida and Carl as Radames. How wonderful that Edmonton Opera is leading off the 2012.13 season with Giuseppe Verdi’s, Aida, October 19, 21, 23, 25, 2012. Rob was a knowledgeable and appreciative aficionado of all of Verdi’s work and 2013 is the 200th anniversary of the great composer. It is all coming together… be part of it…and enjoy Rob Hood’s legacy and his contribution to our enjoyment and the success of the Edmonton Opera.” 18 FIDELIO

PLANNED GIVING by DORIS BONORA
It takes a lifetime to build up an estate and yet, it seems little time, in comparison, is spent to
determine what should happen with an estate after passing. Preparation of a will is encouraged to ensure that there is proper planning of your estate. A basic will could be done leaving your estate to your family and those who matter to you. However, you may also wish to consider the ability to continue to give back to the community by leaving a charitable gift in your will. A charitable gift leaves money or other assets to those organizations which have given you joy such as the Opera. This would be such a wonderful legacy to you and such a wonderful way to give back on your way out. There is also a significant tax benefit to charitable gifts. When you include Edmonton Opera in your estate plans, you provide a foundation for great opera in Edmonton to future generations. If you wish to know more about giving to the opera you are welcome to contact Sandra Gajic, Edmonton Opera’s CEO at 780-424-4040. Doris Bonora is a partner with the law firm of Reynolds Mirth Richards and Farmer LLP and can be reached at dbonora@rmrf.com or 780.497.3370.
