The Artistic Director The arts, whatever they do, whenever they call us together, invite us to look at our fellow human beings with generosity and curiosity. God knows, if we have ever needed that capacity in human history, we need it now.
– Ben Cameron, Doris Duke Foundation
Welcome back...it’s great to see you all again! Opera and the arts are all about generosity, curiosity, passion, compassion and the entire range of human experience, and I’m excited that we’ve all come together once again for this season of unforgettable journeys through the streets of Paris, sand dunes, a Roman castello and, uh, Barrhead. While funding cuts during these difficult times led to our cancellation of Händel’s Imeneo from the new season (okay okay, maybe scheduling five productions was a little ambitious in this belt-tightening new world), it still promises to be a great year for opera in Edmonton, and we will revel in the most beautiful music we’ll ever see, the most beautiful pictures we’ll ever hear. It’s always challenging, often exhilarating and occasionally downright breathtaking to be a part of the greatest art form of them all, and last year at Edmonton Opera was no exception. In the aftermath of global recession, at a time when it is even more important that we celebrate the greatest and most positive achievements of mankind, the arts are all too often instantly labelled as a dispensable luxury, instead of an essential reminder of what keeps us truly alive. The government cutbacks and sadly tightened purses provide everyone with their challenges, but the moments of pure exhilaration in a darkened theatre, when the utter beauty of the operatic experience takes our collective breath away, more than makes up for the headaches. And that’s why we have all come together this evening: to celebrate the start of the forty-seventh season of Edmonton Opera, to lose ourselves in Puccini’s heartbreakingly romantic retelling of “la vie Bohème”, and to take pride in knowing that opera and the arts will always survive in this great city! There’s something about Mary...and no, I am not talking about that rather cheeky movie from a couple of years ago. There really is something, and something uniquely special, about our own Mary Phillips-Rickey, Edmonton Opera’s General Manager extraordinaire. As you must know, with the closing of La Bohème, she’s moving on to the next leg of life’s adventures, and all of us at the Opera are going to miss her terribly. Mary, from the bottom of my heart, from all of our hearts, thank you for everything...this one’s for you! ps Who all’s coming to Berlin in May? Check out the details at the “Berlin with Brian” booth in the main floor lobby, or give us a call at Edmonton Opera!

Dr. dianne kipnes I t has been a year of great change for Edmonton Opera. Like all arts groups, we have been struggling with the increasing costs of opera production and the concurrent economic downturn. This has led to our own internal assessments: of our organization, our audience base and our vision for the future. The fact that we are not alone among opera companies in this endeavor is of little comfort. Our greatest resource, and that of which we are most proud, is our people who make Edmonton Opera happen. But change happens here as well. Our general manager since 2003, Mary Phillips-Rickey, is leaving after this production of Bohème. Among her many accomplishments, her financial skills reversed this company from deficit to financial stability. Noel Xavier, our Fund Development Manager, and Brianna Wells, our Audience Development and Communications Manager, have also resigned. This is also my last term as Chair of Edmonton Opera. Although these are difficult changes for a small company to absorb, the constant pressure on all opera companies to maintain financial stability in economic recession, develop new audiences in digital generations and take sufficient capital risks to stage the kind of diversity and creativity of which we are capable, is ever present. To succeed requires innovation, creativity and faith in our art form. In September, we welcomed our new board chair, Joanne Beaton. A new Customer Management System will allow ticket purchases online. Our Encore and Explorers groups introduce a younger demographic. School classes attend our dress rehearsals. The EOA chorus premiered a “flash mob” at the 104th street market – an event that was great fun and is now visible on YouTube. In closing, I wish to thank all those involved with Edmonton Opera for the privileged experience of being Board Chair. The diversity of experiences and emotions as well as the support and dedication of those whom I have known in this business will always be one for which I will be truly grateful. Dr. Dianne Kipnes, Edmonton Opera Board Chair

message from new board chair
Joanne Beaton Firstly, let me say how delighted I am to be the new Chair of the Edmonton Opera Board of Directors. I know how incredibly dedicated and committed this Board is to supporting opera in Edmonton; it will be a pleasure to work with them again. I also recognize the passion, dedication and commitment that our artists, our patrons and our staff have for opera. It will be an honor to work together with them to continue our proud tradition of delivering exceptional operatic experiences for all Edmontonians. This year holds particular promise for our Company with an array of truly memorable operas (plus one hilariously revised classic). Edmonton Opera is pleased to welcome a number of familiar faces both in the orchestra pit and on the stage. This year, we are also very proud to have the opportunity to showcase a number of new Canadian singers. I invite you to be with us at every show to see familiar faces, hear familiar voices and also to see and hear a number of truly wonderful, emerging Canadian artists. Of course, it is not possible to do all the things this Opera Company does without the support of our many patrons and sponsors. To you, on behalf of the Opera, I say a heartfelt “Thank you! In particular, I send my thanks to our regular patrons who support the Edmonton Opera year after year. It is your dedication to this art, your unflagging interest, and yes, your donations that, in no small part, allow our company to continue to grow and expand. A community without art is a truly lonely place and Edmonton Opera must remain a proud and vital company; bringing this most important art form to all parts of our community. I invite you to fill out our surveys, call our office, or talk to our staff and board members when you see them in the theatre. Let us know what we are doing well and what we can improve upon. I look forward to leading the Company into a future filled with the very best of opera; both new and old. Settle into your chair while we dim the lights, begin the overture and raise the curtain on the 2010/2011 season of Edmonton Opera! Joanne Beaton, Edmonton Opera Board Chair

Farewell to Mary The general manager of an opera company is someone of many talents: able to juggle multiple tasks, encourage and nurture creativity and wiggle a financial bottom line that is always under pressure. Mary Phillips-Rickey, our general manager since 2003, has managed those tasks and more. Her major responsibility was retiring the deficit when she took over as general manager, which she did. As well, under her leadership, Edmonton Opera increased subscription levels, added to outreach and educational programs and presented some of the best opera in North America. Mary teaches financial management at MacEwan University and has lectured at the University of Alberta Guide to Opera. She also instructs Opera 101 for Edmonton Opera. In addition to her professional designation as a chartered accountant, Mary is a performer in her own right. She has sung with Richard Eaton Singers and is a founding member of Excentrica Women’s Chamber chorus. Before taking on her management role, Mary appeared on stage at Edmonton Opera as a chorister, supernumerary and in a named role. She was a performer in the Banff Festival Chorus and was involved in the Theatre for Children, the University of Alberta Concert Choir and Edmonton Children’s Choir. Those of us who have been privileged to hear her sing have been moved by the power of her voice. Mary has an indelible place in the hearts and minds of opera goers in Edmonton. Her depth in the artistic community extends beyond Edmonton and she is known throughout Canada as the dedicated General Manager of Edmonton Opera. Mary’s knowledge, passion and devotion to this art form will be sincerely missed at Edmonton Opera. We wish her well and thank her profusely for what she has done for Edmonton Opera. To the patrons of Edmonton Opera, I have always considered that you, who attend these operas, are my guests. It has been my aim to make sure you had a comfortable and enjoyable time. I hope you have. My seven years as General Manager and the previous five as the Manager of Finance have been immensely rewarding and it would be difficult to imagine more wide ranging and interesting work. I am deeply grateful for the opportunities and honours it has afforded me. Working on the Edmonton Economic Development Corporation or Friends of KSPS Boards, sitting on juries, my nomination for the Rosza Award and my Alumni Honour Award from the University of Alberta were made possible by my position at Edmonton Opera. What is on stage is only a small part of what it takes to make art. Without the dedication of many people, for months (and in some cases years), ensemble art would not happen. All that you see on stage has been pulled together by a team of only ten in the office. Why do we work in the arts? I think we work here because it enriches our souls and we do have fun. I am very proud of my seasons here starting with the turnaround in thinking that happened when I first came to Edmonton Opera as GM. We had cancelled a performance, were getting ready for our 40th anniversary and facing the closure of the Jubilee. By the end of that first season the dark year had become a year of innovation and the 40th celebrations were in place – including Madama Butterfly – the first opera performed by this company. The innovation year was a season of experiments which taught us that the audience loved classic grand opera done classically grandly, but could be pursuaded to see other things. We successfully took chances, from the pairing of Emperor of Atlantis – a play about an opera with Der Kaiser von Atlantis, to the staging of Weill in Weimar at the old Paramount Theatre complete with beer and bratwurst. The return year with the production of Filumena and its filming were a great way to celebrate the Province’s birthday. We showed how fleet of foot we could be when we quickly substituted Bluebeard’s Castle and Ewartung when the Robert LePage production became available. We then took on the very ambitious build of the Don Giovanni suite of sets (which includes Pinafore, Falstaff, Otello and Abduction from the Seraglio). The financial arrangements for this were innovative and, if the economy had held, would have worked very well. Of course the chance to sing with Richard Eaton Singers and the Edmonton Opera chorus when we joined forces with the Alberta Ballet on Mozart’s Requiem was an unforgettable experience personally. The administrative staff have continually proven their abilities to cover the normal little bumps in this business – like sets not being quite as shown in the plans, artists not being available, cash not being plentiful etc, etc, etc. (All the best drama happens offstage!!) This kind of recovery was all in a day’s work at the Opera. Of course we took care of the financial side. As a Chartered Accountant it was just a given that I try to balance the books. All of this was done for our patrons who see Edmonton Opera as a valuable artistic institution. I want to thank all of you for your support of this art form – patrons, donors, sponsors, granters and funders. To all of you who have served with me over my term – the small and insanely dedicated office and artistic staff, the volunteers, Board members and my family – there are not enough words to thank you for your dedication and caring. Thanks especially to the casts and crews who came together to make wonderful art on stage, which is the foundation of this business. To all of you for making my time here so memorable, thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

Giacomo Puccini – 1858-1924
Puccini was born in Lucca, Italy into a family with a long history of music. After the death of his father when he was only five years old, he was sent to study with his uncle Fortunato Magi, who considered him to be a poor and undisciplined student. Later, he took the position of church organist, but it was not until he saw a performance of Verdi’s Aida that he became inspired to be an opera composer. In 1880, the Messa di Gloria, composed at the age of 22, marked the end of Puccini’s apprenticeship as a composer and the culmination of his family’s long association with church music in his native Lucca. The work offers fascinating glimpses of the dramatic power that Puccini was soon to unleash on Milan’s stages. The orchestration and the overall feeling of drama conveyed by his music establish a dialogue with Verdi’s Requiem and perhaps already constitute a prediction of the future operatic career Puccini would embrace for life. From 1880 to 1883 he studied at the Milan Conservatory under Amilcare Ponchielli and Antonio Bazzini. In 1882, Puccini entered a competition for a one-act opera. Although he did not win, Le Villi was later staged in 1884 at the Teatro dal Verme; it also caught the attention of the publisher Giulio Ricordi who commissioned a second opera (Edgar). Not only was Manon Lescaut, his third opera, a great success, it also began his relationship with the librettests Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa, who worked with him on his next three operas. The first of these, La Bohème (based on a story by Henry Murger), is considered one of his best works, as well as one of the most romantic operas ever composed. His next opera, Tosca, was Puccini’s first foray into verismo. Madama Butterfly (based on a play by David Belasco) was greeted with great hostility at its opening (mostly orchestrated by his rivals), but after some reworking it has become another of his most successful operas. Composition was slow after this. In 1903 he was injured in an automobile accident. In 1906 Giacosa died. In 1909, there was scandal after their maid was falsely accused by Puccini’s wife of having an affair with Puccini and then committed suicide. And in 1912, Puccini’s editor, Ricordi, died. In 1918, Il Trittico premiered. This work is composed of three one-act operas in the style of the Parisian Grand Guignol: a horrific episode (Il Tabarro), a sentimental tragedy (Suor Angelica) and a comedy or farce (Gianni Schicchi). Of the three, Gianni Schicchi is the most popular and Il Tabarro the least. Puccini died in Brussels, Belgium in 1924 from complications due to treatment for throat cancer. Turandot, his last opera was left unfinished; the last two scenes were completed by Franco Alfano. In 2001 a new completion of the final scenes was made by Luciano Berio.

LA BOHÈME
SYNOPSIS
ACT I. Paris, Christmas Eve. In their Latin Quarter garret, the painter Marcello and poet Rodolfo try to keep warm by burning pages from Rodolfo’s latest drama. They are joined by their comrades — Colline, a young philosopher, and Schaunard, a musician who has landed a job and brings food, fuel and funds. But while they celebrate their unexpected fortune, the landlord, Benoit, arrives to collect the rent. Plying the older man with wine, they urge him to tell of his flirtations, then throw him out in mock indignation. As the friends depart for a celebration at the nearby Café Momus, Rodolfo promises to join them soon, staying behind to finish writing an article. There is another knock: a neighbor, Mimì, says her candle has gone out on the drafty stairs. Offering her wine when she feels faint, Rodolfo relights her candle and helps her to the door. Mimì realizes she has dropped her key, and as the two search for it, both candles are blown out. In the moonlight the poet takes the girl’s shivering hand, telling her his dreams. She then recounts her solitary life, embroidering flowers and waiting for spring. Drawn to each other, Mimì and Rodolfo leave for the café.
ACT II. Amid shouts of street hawkers, Rodolfo buys Mimì a bonnet near the Café Momus before introducing her to his friends. They all sit down and order supper. A toy vendor, Parpignol, passes by, besieged by children. Marcello’s former lover, Musetta, enters ostentatiously on the arm of the elderly, wealthy Alcindoro. Trying to regain the painter’s attention, she sings a waltz about her popularity. Complaining that her shoe pinches, Musetta sends Alcindoro to fetch a new pair, then falls into Marcello’s arms. Joining a group of marching soldiers, the Bohemians leave Alcindoro to face the bill when he returns.
ACT III. At dawn on the snowy outskirts of Paris, a Customs Officer admits farm women to the city. Musetta and revelers are heard inside a tavern. Soon Mimì walks by, searching for the place where the reunited Marcello and Musetta now live. When the painter emerges, she pours out her distress over Rodolfo’s incessant jealousy. It is best they part, she says. Rodolfo, who has been asleep in the tavern, is heard, and Mimì hides; Marcello thinks she has left. The poet tells Marcello he wants to separate from his fickle sweetheart. Pressed further, he breaks down, saying Mimì is dying; her ill health can only worsen in the poverty they share. Overcome, Mimì stumbles forward to bid her lover farewell as Marcello runs back into the tavern to investigate Musetta’s raucous laughter. While Mimì and Rodolfo recall their happiness, Musetta quarrels with Marcello. The painter and his mistress part in fury, but Mimì and Rodolfo decide to stay together until spring.
ACT IV. Some months later, Rodolfo and Marcello lament their loneliness in the garret. Colline and Schaunard bring a meager meal. The four stage a dance, which turns into a mock fight. The merrymaking is ended when Musetta bursts in, saying Mimì is downstairs, too weak to climb up. As Rodolfo runs to her, Musetta tells how Mimì has begged to be taken to her lover to die. While Mimì is made comfortable, Marcello goes with Musetta to sell her earrings for medicine, and Colline leaves to pawn his cherished overcoat. Alone, Mimì and Rodolfo recall their first days together, but she is seized with coughing. When the others return, Musetta gives Mimì a muff to warm her hands and prays for her life. Mimì dies quietly, and when Schaunard discovers she is dead, Rodolfo runs to her side, calling her name. – courtesy of Opera News la bohÈME 17
