It’s become a tradition. I’m writing these words to you during the long leg of the flight between Buenos Aires and Edmonton: it was a bit of a kick in the pants to travel all that way, only to have the Falstaff at Teatro Colon cancelled due to some union strike. Ah well, a wildly entertaining – and very Spanish – production of Sweeney Todd gave me my culture fix in the two weeks of discovering Argentina. I know we’re already a month into it, but… Happy New Year! Cockeyed optimism demands that this is going to be a great year for everyone, and here’s hoping that art and music and theatre and culture and OPERA thrive in 2011, and that we begin to see regrowth, rebirth and restoration in the aftermath of recession. The Queen famously had her “annus horribilus”, and so far, for Edmonton Opera, 2011 promises to be our “annus extremelus busylus”: clearly, Latin was never offered in Lacombe! What follows is just an iceberg tip of our goings-on in the first six months of the coming year.

• We’re still getting countless hits on our website for the Christmas Flash mob at City Centre. At the time of printing we’re already at 25,000 hits. Check us out on YouTube!

• You’re here tonight for Mike Cavanagh’s wacky and wild updating of Abduction from the Seraglio. “Too many notes” indeed. Opera: shaken, not stirred.

• The production of Nicholas Nickleby that I’m directing is just about to open at Studio Theatre (February 10-19). Get over to the Timms next week and celebrate the talent coming out of the UofA Drama department.

• The gala to end all galas, the Edmonton Opera and CapitalCare Valentine’s event takes place at the Shaw Conference Centre on – when else? – February 14th. Hurry, phone our offices right away to beg for one of the few remaining tickets.

• Things are cooking along for The Barber of Barrhead, our one-hour, family-

friendly collaboration with Fringe Theatre Adventures, taking place in the TransAlta Arts Barns at the end of the month. Some shows are already sold out!

• Rehearsals are well underway for Lend me a Tenor, the one-performance only Edmonton Opera/Players de Novo fundraiser for Edmonton Opera and Victoria School on May 13th. Can I just say… as director, I don’t know when I last laughed so much in rehearsal! Lawyers in bras and panties… do not miss this event, and support two great Edmonton arts organizations at the same time. • Yannick-Muriel Noah, Robert Breault and Edmonton’s own Nathan Berg will be here soon for the start of Tosca: I can’t wait to hear these three in Puccini’s masterpiece.

• The Berlin with Brian planning for May 15-22nd just gets more and more interesting, and hey, there are still a few places available. Give us a call.

• And, with our fantastic Acting CEO Patti Pon and Board Chair Joanne Beaton moving

things along, there’s a golf tournament coming up (June 9th), a return to the Devonian Gardens for Opera al Fresco (June 24th) and as important as anything…

We’re announcing our 2011-12 season for all of you tonight! Cavalleria Rusticana & I Pagliacci ! The Mikado !! Fidelio ! ! ! Just the names for now, but so much more to come from all of us in the “extremelus busylus” world of Edmonton Opera. We welcome the new year, with a commitment to unleashing the power of opera!

In Edmonton, perhaps more than in any other city, we know how important it is to “live local” – supporting our community and economy, attending cultural events and generally, being a consumer of anything and everything locally produced. It is something I feel strongly about and I know you do too. Local arts organizations give our city depth, character and most importantly vibrancy and zest. Without them we would not be able to attract and retain the talent and business investments we need to continue to grow and prosper. That is why it is such an honour and a pleasure for me to serve on the Board of the Edmonton Opera, an organization that for 47 years has played such a prominent role in the Edmonton arts community and that has helped to create and define the fabric of our community. It’s a great pleasure to see both new faces and old here at the Opera. While you enjoy this exceptional performance and hopefully indulge in a “shaken not stirred” martini, allow me to say, Thank You – after all, it is your patronage and commitment to “living local” that is the key to sustaining and growing our Edmonton arts community for today and for generations to come. Joanne Beaton

Welcome to Edmonton Opera and our 189th production – Mozart’s The Abduction from the Seraglio. As a lifelong Albertan, I am very proud to be working with one of the Province’s flagship arts companies and experiencing firsthand the strength, passion and commitment of our people and the tremendous art they produce for our city. No one does it better than Edmonton Opera and I am so pleased that you have joined us for this evening’s performance. In our 47th season, we are a local independent enterprise committed to “Unleashing the Power of Opera” through providing wonderful operatic experiences for you, our community. While we feature dozens of national and international artists to the Edmonton Opera stage, they are complemented by an additional 300 artists, craftspeople, administrators, venue staff and volunteers from Edmonton to create what we do for every single performance. As we build towards our 50th anniversary season in 2013/14 look for us in the community at events as we Live/LIVE Local…most especially consider joining us for our 48th season. Look for the program insert announcing next season with full glorious details to come... In the meantime, on behalf of everyone here at Edmonton Opera, we wish you all the best for 2011 and look forward to seeing you again soon, not only here at the Jube but throughout the City. Cheers Patti the abduction from the seraglio 5

What is it about Edmonton that makes you about living here and calling it home?

Joanne Beaton,

Board Chair VP, National Operations, TELUS

“In Edmonton, perhaps more

than in any other city, we know how important it is to “live local” – supporting our community and economy, attending cultural events and generally, being a consumer of anything and everything locally produced.”

Dr. Diane Kipnes, Past Chair, Chair (Gala) Clinical Psychologist, private practice

“Edmonton is the most

volunteer oriented community in Canada. People are willing to help in so many areas - the arts, sports, medicine. As I write this, the Grey Cup is going on and the exuberance and hospitality of Edmonton is palpable. Our reputation as a cold city is a total misnomer.”

Kyle Murray,

Board Vice Chair Professor, University of Alberta

“There is great creative energy in Edmonton that fuels an innovative and entrepreneurial spirit in the arts, business and government. It is a young and growing city full of challenge and potential. But most importantly, and despite the cold weather, it is a warm and welcoming community that just feels like home.”

Hilary Rose,

Board Treasurer, Chartered Accountant

“Edmonton offers quality of life and diverse opportunities for me and my family. We all enjoy working, playing and learning from all the City has to offer.”

Alex Meisen,

Board Secretary Chair, Foresight, Alberta Innovates Technology Futures

“Living on the edge of the

board of directors 2010-11 Katherine Braun,

Executive Director, Alberta Department of Energy

“I find Edmonton a great city for the arts. I have lived elsewhere and always marvel at how much Edmonton has to offer by way of cultural and artistic events. I am an avid opera fan but also value the symphony, live theatre, and various summer events such as the Fringe and Heritage Days. Edmonton is a very welcoming city for the arts and the wide variety of different venues allows Edmonton residents to participate in new and different experiences that broaden their cultural awareness.”

Julie Conlin,

Director, Real Estate Services TELUS Communications

“As a relatively recent

transplant to Edmonton from Vancouver, I am delighted by the passion the capital region demonstrates through volunteerism, patronage and financial support for our arts and entertainment culture. Edmonton is a truly wonderful place to live and it’s a pleasure to live in a city committed to community involvement in spite of it’s significant growth.”

Laura Fitzgerald,

President, Laura Fitzgerald Consulting

“Edmonton is my home.

My family and friends are here. I love the closeness of the city.”

Brian Hetherington,

“Having lived in major cities

on both sides of the Atlantic, I moved to Edmonton with a belief that I would remain a maximum of five years before moving on. That was more than 35 years ago. I now can’t envision living anywhere else, thanks largely to the wonderful arts activities and the feeling of involvement, which has been developed by serving on the boards of the city’s three major performing arts companies.

Jeffrey Jansen,

Senior Consultant, PC Corp; Shoe Aficionado, enPrivado Shoes

“I love Edmonton because of the sense of community and that we are blessed with so many world class medical, educational and cultural institutions. Being of European heritage, I am amazed how cosmopolitan we can be. While, as a city, we do not have the history of many European cities, we still have a sense of heritage, and pride in our accomplishments.”

Mary LeMessurier “I moved here in 1971 from

Montreal and instantly fell in love with a smaller community. Everything was growing, and the arts scene was going through its expansion. It is now so great and versatile, and I love that I was able to see this great accomplishment, and to directly participate in the process.”

What is it about Edmonton that makes you about living here and calling it home?

Bertrand Malo, Crown Prosecutor, Alberta Justice

“Coming from another

province, it was a revelation for me to discover Edmonton with its scenic river valley and its flourishing music, art, festivals and sport communities. I was immediately captivated by the friendliness of its vibrant population. Edmonton made it easy for me to feel at home and welcomed. I love this city.”

Lynn Mandel “We are blessed in Edmonton to have many opportunities because of a robust and progressive economy, but it is our cultural diversity and our vibrant arts community that makes life here fulfilling.”

Reza Mostashari,

President, Langham Developments

“It’s the people in Edmonton;

competent, kind, unassuming and friendly. I have lived here now for about 15 years, attended university, and started my business about 9 years ago. It will be difficult to replicate the relationships I have with people here, both personal and professional, in another place. Edmonton has been great to me.”

Robert Rock,

Manager, Post-Secondary Programs Branch, Advanced Education and Technology

“I like Edmonton’s tradition

of welcoming the world and its can-do attitude. I like that Edmontonians give countless volunteer hours devoted to supporting health, education and environmental issues, as well as arts, culture and sport related activities – all of which make the city a better place to live and work. Edmonton is a vibrant dignified city with heart.”

Katie Soles,

“A community needs a soul if it is to become a true home for human beings. Edmonton has an abundance of soul and impassioned people who call it home.”

Francis Price and Marguerite Trussler This production of Abduction from the Seraglio is sponsored by two of

Edmonton Opera’s dedicated patrons, Francis Price and Marguerite Trussler. Their contribution to the Arts goes back more than 35 years, to 1974 – the year they began their life together here in Edmonton.

Marguerite, who was born and raised in Edmonton and Calgary, met Francis in Australia. Together they returned to Edmonton on New Year’s Eve 1973. Despite being greeted by snow that reached the rooftops and -35°C temperatures, they weren’t deterred. For Marguerite this was home, and for Francis it was a place with which he instantly connected. Three weeks after arriving, the couple received tickets to La Traviata starring José Carreras, who made his North American debut here in Edmonton. Francis and Marguerite have been Opera patrons ever since. Marguerite began her involvement with Edmonton Opera as a board member in 1975, and has been recognized for her active involvement and dedication over the years. Francis started singing in the Opera’s chorus in 1988, and since then, has appeared in over thirty productions. His presence in the chorus – in productions, on television or in Edmonton Opera flash mobs – continues. In 2006-8 he was Chair of the Opera Board. Through Marguerite’s and Francis’ combined efforts, many people have been introduced to the world of Opera. The couple give tickets as gifts, extend personal invitations to friends and acquaintances, and promote Opera throughout our city. They also support the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, Opera NUOVA, the Citadel Theatre, the Players de Novo and the Victoria School of the Arts, where Marguerite founded the Victoria School Foundation for the Arts and helped raise an endowment fund to provide scholarships for aspiring young artists. Francis and Marguerite open their home to international artists and host dinner parties and recitals to attract new donors and sponsorships to Edmonton Opera. They have also been instrumental in the success of the Edmonton Opera Endowment Fund, which has raised over $2.5 million, providing Edmonton Opera with long-term tools to do exceptional work. When you ask Francis what it is about Opera that captivates him, he says “Opera is the most complete form of theatre: acting, singing, movement – it is all there. On a cold night, after work, there is nothing better than escaping to the South Pacific, the middle of Italy, or ancient Egypt – in a way that is much bigger than regular life – you have to try it! Opera shapes our community, and having this amazing art form in our city is invaluable.” Edmonton Opera thanks Sir Francis Price and Hon. Marguerite Trussler for their constant support and dedication. Their passion and involvement truly shape the Arts scene in our community, making Edmonton an exceptional place to live.

“...Opera shapes our community, and having this amazing art form in our city is invaluable.” 10 the abduction from the seraglio

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart 1756-1791 Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart was born on January 27, 1756 in Salzburg, at that time an autonomous city-state with a Prince-Archbishop who provided both temporal and spiritual leadership. Mozart’s father, Leopold, was a musician and composer in the Prince-Archbishop’s court. Leopold provided Mozart’s only formal teaching in music, and quickly recognized his son’s prodigious gifts for learning and for music when the boy taught himself how to play the violin before turning seven years old. Leopold seized upon the remarkable musical abilities of the boy and his elder sister, Maria Anna, and supplemented his meager courtly income by touring with his children and displaying their talents before the nobility of Europe. In all, Mozart, spent about a quarter of all his days on the road, traveling throughout Europe, from London and Paris to Germany, Austria, and Italy. His ability to play complex compositions from memory, to play blindfolded, and ultimately to compose made him the stuff of legend, the archetypal child prodigy. In his travels, Mozart also encountered a wide variety of composers and compositional styles. The compositional output of his youth and adolescence reflects this dizzying array of influences, with locally popular compositional styles mimicked, then incorporated into his own evolving style. Leopold insisted that his son make a living in a stable, corporate-like position in a nobleman’s court; the unstable life of the freelance musician was much less solidly established at this time. However, no noblemen were willing to engage a teenage boy as a court musician, prodigy or no prodigy. As a result, Mozart spent his late adolescence and early twenties in the employ of the Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg. Throughout this period he sought posts elsewhere, and the world traveler chafed at the musical limitations of provincial Salzburg. He also resented his father’s attempts to thwart any romantic relationships and keep him earning money to support the entire family. Things came to a head in 1781, when the 25-year-old Mozart had a public clash with the PrinceArchbishop, and resigned his post against his father’s wishes. Mozart broke with the Archbishop and moved to Vienna, the imperial capital and a major cultural center, working as a freelance composer and musician, though continually seeking a formal appointment at an aristocratic court. Mozart broke with his father the next year when he married Constanze Weber, a singer from a family of impoverished musicians, against Leopold’s wishes. Mozart quickly ingratiated himself with the music connosieurs among the nobility. He spent the next nine years of his life working as a teacher, pianist, concert promoter, and composer of some of the most sublime music in the history of Western art music. He was beginning to establish himself with the aristocracy and public alike when he suddenly died, on December 5, 1791, at the age of 35, from an unknown febrile illness. the abduction from the seraglio 13

ACT I. Federal agent Belmonte, seeking to rescue his beloved (and colleague) Konstanze, arrives at the desert compound of a middle eastern megalomaniac, the Pasha Selim. Konstanze had been captured by the Pasha, along with her trusty fellow agent Blonde, while they were trying to uncover his plans for world domination. Osmin, the Pasha’s head of security, encounters Belmonte outside the gates of the compound and ignores his attempts at ingratiation. Belmonte tries to obtain news of his junior officer, Pedrillo, who has already infiltrated the Pasha’s compound disguised as a gardener. Osmin replies with insults and abuse and Belmonte is driven away. Pedrillo enters and Osmin rages at him, too, vowing to have him tortured and killed in many different ways. Osmin finally leaves, allowing Belmonte to reconnect with Pedrillo. Together they resolve to effect the rescue of their two lovers. They are interrupted by a chorus of acolytes and employees of the Pasha Selim, singing praises to him as he parades through his grounds along with his captives. The Pasha appeals to Konstanze, for whose love he strives in vain. After she rejects him yet again, Pedrillo interrupts the Pasha’s wistful pining by introducing Belmonte as his new court-appointed torturer. Osmin, ever suspicious, tries to refuse them access to the palace, but he and Pedrillo enter anyway. Meanwhile, within the compound, Blonde ruminates on the wooing techniques of the locals. Later she repulses the rough seduction attempts of Osmin by a combination of guile and violence. Blonde later finds Konstanze in distress, learning that the Pasha Selim’s demands for love include threats to use force. When Konstanze has gone, Pedrillo comes to Blonde, his sweetheart, and informs her that Belmonte is near and that all is ready for flight. Blonde is filled with joy. Pedrillo connives to get Osmin drunk, after lacing a bottle of wine with camel tranquilizer. When Osmin has passed out, the two couples reunite. Belmonte and Pedrillo both question anxiously whether their respective fiancées have remained faithful during their forced separation; to their delight the women respond with indignation and dismay. Just as the men’s suspicions are allayed and offensive questions forgiven, the two couples are separated once more by the Pasha’s mercenaries.

ACT II. Belmonte and Pedrillo come to the garden with disguises and equipment designed to effect the women’s escape. Belmonte succeeds in abducting Konstanze, but when Pedrillo is about to escape with Blonde, they are seen by Osmin, who rouses the guard. The chase is on, resulting in the recapture of both couples. Belmonte pleads for their lives and reveals their real identities to the Pasha. Rather than capitulating, the Pasha rejoices in the opportunity to dish out punishment to agents of his sworn enemy, the federal government. He leaves Belmonte and Konstanze to ponder their fate, but when he returns, he decides he can make a better point by releasing them all. All are set at liberty and rejoice, singing the Pasha’s praises — much to the dismay of Osmin. – courtesy of Michael Cavanagh the abduction from the seraglio 15
