ot to put too fine a spin on it, but spring has sprung. The only thing is, here in Alberta, and considering the program deadline for this message to all of you, it’s hard to say whether we’re still springing over the waist-high snowdrifts, or if you springed, spranged or sprunged over the puddles to get to the Jube tonight. No matter what, the calendar tells me it’s spring, the season of replenishment, fresh beginnings and all things new. And with that in mind, what’s new with Edmonton Opera? Well, the late April arrival of our brand-spanking new CEO is certainly a major event for the company. I’ve known Sandra Gajic since my earliest forays into this great art form at the Canadian Opera Company, and we’re all really excited for the talent, skill and passion for opera that she brings to us, as we head into the next stage of our future. It’s hard to say goodbye to Patti Pon, our Interim CEO for this past season: we’d just about talked her into actually liking opera, and we’re all going to miss her. Equally exciting is the fact that the new season, our 48th, has been announced. You knew the titles at the time of our last show, but only now is the incredible lineup of artists for next year being made available to everyone. Richard Margison. Wendy Nielsen. John Mac Master. Gregory Dahl. Laura Whalen. Bretta Gerecke. Nathalie Paulin. Scott Scully. Andriana Chuchman. John Fanning. Our own Edmonton Opera Chorus. During my time here in Edmonton, the upcoming season represents perhaps our most fantastic collection of artists, onstage or off, and that doesn’t even include the equally wonderful list of new or debuting singers...AND two brand-new productions of MIKADO and FIDELIO. They, along with the magnificent CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA and I PAGLIACCI, pretty much guarantee that you all—no, WE all!—are in for a new season of amazing operatic experiences. It’s all about unleashing the power of opera right here in our town, and while you settle in for the beauty and heartbreak of Puccini’s tragic TOSCA, I hope a small piece of your mind is already gearing up for the wonders of new things to come with Edmonton Opera. Enjoy the show.

Welcome to TOSCA and our final production for the 2010-2011 season. We’d like to extend our
thanks to all of you for your support this year. Edmonton Opera has spent 48 seasons bringing wonderful operatic experiences to our city and it takes all of YOU — audiences, sponsors, patrons and volunteers alike to help us make it the experience that it is. We couldn’t do all of this without all of you and we are grateful.
While this is our last mainstage show of the year, Edmonton Opera will still be very active throughout the spring and summer as we LIVE LOCAL at our annual golf tournament at the Glendale Golf & Country Club on June 9th, and join with the good folks from the beautiful Devonian Gardens when our wonderful chorus performs at Opera Al Fresco on June 24th at the gardens. Tickets and more information for both of these events are available through our offices at 780-424-4040. As Brian has already mentioned in his comments and the video tonight, we are thrilled about next season! And it isn’t just our shows that will make it a fantastic year ahead, as our new CEO Sandra Gajic joins the EOA team. Sandra is an accomplished arts leader who is passionate about the opera. She is a wonderful addition to our company and our community. We hope you’ll get to meet her in person soon, but in the meantime you can learn a little bit more about her in this playbill. Have a fantastic summer and stay in touch via our website, www.edmontonopera.com, for our current news and events.
I
am delighted to be joining Edmonton Opera’s team. For an arts administrator, one of the greatest thrills in a lifetime is to have the opportunity to work in the field where one understands the art form’s power – its ability to both fire up and soothe the soul. Opera has always been the most inspiring of the performing arts for me. The love affair began as a little girl, sitting under my grandmother’s piano and listening to her playing and singing the operatic arias. Opera continues to have a great role in the society, forming the social identities of communities and showing what happens in human beings – intelligence and the emotions are the reflections of the community at large. Global influences affect the world of the opera in such diverse types of knowledge acquisitions or the social values – always pushing boundaries, making us feel, think, dream, create. As the incoming leader of this wonderful organization, and along with Artistic Director, Brian Deedrick, the staff and Board, I see my role as enhancing the public renown of the Edmonton Opera – not only on a regional level but also on the national and international stage. I will strive to balance fiscal stability with artistic integrity, setting the stage for future growth and transformation of the organization yet to come. My promise to Edmonton’s audiences is to provide great operatic experiences that area aficionados deserve – the fantasy that enchants all opera goers. I am now inviting you to be part of this journey – let us inspire you. Sandra

Cesare Angelotti, an escaped political prisoner, rushes into the church of Sant’ Andrea della Valle to hide in the Attavanti chapel. As he vanishes, an old Sacristan shuffles in, praying at the sound of the Angelus. Mario Cavaradossi enters to work on his portrait of Mary Magdalene – inspired by the Marchesa Attavanti (Angelotti’s sister), whom he has seen but does not know. Taking out a miniature of the singer Floria Tosca, he compares her raven beauty with that of the blonde Magdalene (“Recondita armonia”). The Sacristan grumbles disapproval and leaves. Angelotti ventures out and is recognized by his friend and fellow liberal Mario, who gives him food and hurries him back into the chapel as Tosca is heard calling outside. Forever suspicious, she jealously questions him, then prays, and reminds him of their rendezvous that evening at his villa (“Non la sospiri la nostra casetta?”). Suddenly recognizing the Marchesa Attavanti in the painting, she explodes with renewed suspicions, but he reassures her (“Qual’ occhio al mondo”). When she has gone, Mario summons Angelotti from the chapel; a cannon signals that the police have discovered the escape, so the two flee to Mario’s villa. Meanwhile, the Sacristan returns with choirboys who are to sing in a Te Deum that day. Their excitement is silenced by the entrance of Baron Scarpia, chief of the secret police, in search of Angelotti. When Tosca comes back to her lover, Scarpia shows her a fan with the Attavanti crest, which he has just found. Thinking Mario faithless, Tosca tearfully vows vengeance and leaves as the church fills with worshipers. Scarpia, sending his men to follow her to Angelotti, schemes to get the diva in his power (“Va, Tosca!”).
In the Farnese Palace, Scarpia anticipates the sadistic pleasure of bending Tosca to his will (“Ha più forte sapore”). The spy Spoletta arrives, not having found Angelotti; to placate the baron he brings in Mario, who is interrogated while Tosca is heard singing a cantata at a royal gala downstairs. She enters just as her lover is being taken to an adjoining room: his arrogant silence is to be broken under torture. Unnerved by Scarpia’s questioning and the sound of Mario’s screams, she reveals Angelotti’s hiding place. Mario is carried in; realizing what has happened, he turns on Tosca, but the officer Sciarrone rushes in to announce that Napoleon has won the Battle of Marengo, a defeat for Scarpia’s side. Mario shouts his defiance of tyranny (“Vittoria!”) and is dragged to prison. Scarpia, resuming his supper, suggests that Tosca yield herself to him in exchange for her lover’s life. Fighting off his embraces, she protests her fate to God, having dedicated her life to art and love (“Vissi d’arte”). Scarpia again insists, but Spoletta interrupts: faced with capture, Angelotti has killed himself. Tosca, forced to give in or lose her lover, agrees to Scarpia’s proposition. The baron pretends to order a mock execution for the prisoner, after which he is to be freed; Spoletta leaves. No sooner has Scarpia written a safe-conduct for the lovers than Tosca snatches a knife from the table and kills him. Wrenching the document from his stiffening fingers and placing candles at his head and a crucifix on his chest, she slips from the room. 14 tosca
The voice of a shepherd boy is heard as church bells toll the dawn. Mario awaits execution at the Castel Sant’Angelo; he bribes the jailer to convey a farewell note to Tosca. Writing it, overcome with memories of love, he gives way to despair (“E lucevan le stelle”). Suddenly Tosca runs in, filled with the story of her recent adventures. Mario caresses the hands that committed murder for his sake (“O dolci mani”), and the two hail their future. As the firing squad appears, the diva coaches Mario on how to fake his death convincingly; the soldiers fire and depart. Tosca urges Mario to hurry, but when he fails to move, she discovers that Scarpia’s treachery has transcended the grave: the bullets were real. When Spoletta rushes in to arrest Tosca for Scarpia’s murder, she cries to Scarpia to meet her before God, then leaps to her death. – courtesy of Opera News
