THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR I t’s a thrill… for once, I’m not writing from an airplane! Instead, I’m in one of those places of magic for everyone who works in the performing arts – the rehearsal room. It’s a special and unique place that most of you will never see: it’s where we come to create, explore, feel vulnerable, make mistakes, laugh, cry, take risks, make more mistakes, experience great joy, sweat a little or a lot, build relationships and commit completely to the painstaking process of finding the best way to tell the story. A rehearsal hall and a delivery room are remarkably similar, as both are fully focused on the birth process, be it a six-pound bundle of love or an unforgettable work of art. What makes this particular rehearsal room experience so extraordinary is that more than just opera is happening here. Timelines being what they are, you are just settling into your seats for Otello in Edmonton, while I write from the beautiful Alberta Ballet rehearsal studio in Calgary. We’re hard at work on Sins and Songs, the Edmonton Opera-Alberta Ballet collaboration, and what’s so amazing here is to watch the artists of two distinctly different arts forms coming together in mutual admiration and a spirit of collaboration. The training, the skill sets and the demands of ballet and opera are so different, and what rocks my world is the generosity and universal recognition of the rehearsal room as a near-sacred place of creativity and inspiration. Singers and dancers have different needs, different ways of working and very different rehearsal rituals, and yet what ties everyone in the room together is that IT’S ALL ABOUT THE WORK. In a perfect world (yes, I’m touching wood for tonight), Otello will flow for you “like buttah”, and the countless hours in the rehearsal hall will pay off with a powerful and heartbreaking operatic experience. I have no end of respect and admiration for the dedicated and multi-talented artists who come together to create, and whether it’s the show tonight, or a performance of next year’s Bohème, Abduction, Barber of Barrhead or Tosca, or ANY work you find yourself attending, I hope you appreciate the artists’ journey and find the magic, too.
Brian Deedrick, Artistic Director

Mary LeMessurier If you find yourself approached at an Opera intermission by a woman with beautiful white hair and eyes that sparkle – sometimes mischeviously – then you may be experiencing your first conversation with Board member Mary LeMessurier. If the first words out of her mouth are “How are you enjoying the opera?,” then you are definitely speaking with her! Mary has been affiliated with Edmonton Opera for more than 35 years, as a patron, volunteer, Board member, and even at one time the interim General Manager of the company. The former Minister for Culture in the Province of Alberta, Mary has worked tirelessly for decades to promote the understanding and support of the arts in this province, and Edmonton Opera is lucky that Mary’s considerable talents and energy remain focused on Edmonton Opera in particular. Mary has been the driving force behind the annual CGI Edmonton Opera Golf Classic for its 15-year existence, and she reminds us that the worlds of sport and opera are not that dissimilar: “Singers and athletes strive to achieve something that is beautiful, incredibly difficult, and larger than life. Whether it’s on stage, at the Olympics, or on the golf course, we can be inspired in our own lives by those who are passionate and dedicated in their own.” OTELLO 5

DAVID COOK May 19, 1942 – Sept 13, 2009
This production of Otello is dedicated to our teacher, friend, and fervent opera advocate, Dr. David Cook. He made Opera Talks an integral part of the Edmonton Opera experience and because of his knowledge, enthusiasm and humour, brought greater enjoyment of the opera to hundreds of opera goers. His talks are an unforgettable part of Edmonton Opera’s history. His unfailing passion for the art form was, perhaps, the most persuasive form of his support for Edmonton Opera. Our production of Otello was this season’s highlight for him. His joie de vivre was an inspiration to us. Thank you David.

GIUSEPPE VERDI G iuseppe Verdi (1813-1901), one of the most popular of all opera composers, was born to a poor family in a tiny Italian village. He began studying music in the nearby town of Busseto, where he was taken into the home of a wealthy patron who later also supported his education in Milan. When he completed his studies, he became municipal music director in Busseto and married his patron’s daughter; three years later he returned to Milan with the score of his first opera, Oberto. Oberto was produced at La Scala (Milan’s opera house) in 1839, had a modest success, and brought Verdi a contract for more operas. Then disaster struck: his wife and their two children died. Verdi managed to complete his next opera, but it was a failure and, in despair, he vowed to compose no more.
Verdi’s Operas • Oberto (1839)
What changed his mind was a libretto about the ancient Jews exiled from their homeland. Verdi was an ardent nationalist who yearned for a free and united Italy and saw the Jews as a symbol of the oppressed Italians. He quickly composed Nabucco, which was a huge success. From then on, Verdi and his operas came to be associated with the Italian independence movement. (The cry Viva Verdi also stood for the patriotic slogan “Vittorio Emmanuele, Re D’Italia”– Victor Emmanuel, king of Italy.)
• Un giorno di regno (1840)
In his late thirties, Verdi composed Rigoletto (1853), and La Traviata (1853). Although the public loved them, critics were often scandalized by their subject matter — they seemed to condone rape, suicide, and free love. But Verdi was fiercely independent and himself lived openly with his second wife for ten years before marrying her.
• Alzira (1845)
After these successes had made him wealthy, Verdi bought an estate in Busseto; and in 1861 he was elected in the first parliament that convened after Italy had become a nation. In his later years he wrote Aida (1871), Otello (1887), and – at the age of seventy-nine – his final opera, Falstaff (1893).
• Jérusalem (1847)
Verdi composed not for the musical elite but for a mass public whose main entertainment was opera. He sought subjects that were‘original, interesting... and passionate; passions above all!’ Almost all his mature works are serious and end unhappily; they move quickly and involve extremes of hatred, love, jealousy, and fear; and his powerful music underlines the dramatic situations. Otello, based on Shakespeare’s Othello, a classic tale of jealousy and manipulation, fits these requirements perfectly.
• Stiffelio (1850)
Expressive vocal melody is the soul of a Verdi opera. There are many duets, trios, and quartets; and the chorus plays an important role. Verdi’s style became less conventional as he grew older; his later works have greater musical continuity, less difference between aria and recitative, more imaginative orchestration, and richer accompaniments. There is no question that Verdi is pre-eminent among western operatic composers, his rich legacy of works include some of the most performed operas of all time, and most certainly, will continue to be performed for many generations to come.
• Aroldo (1857)
• Nabucco (1842) • I Lombardi alla prima crociata (1843) • Ernani (1844) • I due Foscari (1844) • Giovanna d’Arco (1845) • Attila (1846) • Macbeth (1847) • I masnadieri (1847) • Il corsaro (1848) • La battaglia di Legnano (1849) • Luisa Miller (1849) • Rigoletto (1851) • Il trovatore (1853) • La traviata (1853) • Les vêpres siciliennes (1855) • Simon Boccanegra (1857) • Un ballo in maschera (1859) • La forza del destino (1862) • Don Carlos (1867) • Aida (1871) • Otello (1887) • Falstaff (1893)

Otello
SYNOPSIS ACT I. Cyprus, late fifteenth century. The Moor Otello, governor of the island and a general in the Venetian army, arrives in port as a tempest rages. Iago, Otello’s ensign, confers with Roderigo, a gentleman who has come to Cyprus because of his unrequited love for Desdemona, a Venetian beauty recently married to Otello. Promising to help Roderigo, Iago says Desdemona will soon tire of her Moorish husband, adding that he himself has reasons for revenge on Otello, who passed him over for advancement, promoting Cassio instead. Iago proposes a toast; when Cassio declines any more drink, Iago says he cannot refuse to salute Otello’s new wife. Cassio consents and grows tipsy as Iago provokes Roderigo to a duel with Cassio. When Montano, Otello’s predecessor in command, tries to separate the two, Cassio attacks him as well. Otello comes out of the castle to restore order. When he sees Desdemona disturbed by the fray, he takes away Cassio’s recent promotion. Sending everyone home, Otello turns to his bride, and they recall their courtship. Leading her back into the castle, Otello kisses her.
ACT II. A room in the castle, opening on a garden. Iago tells Cassio that by presenting his case to Desdemona he can be reinstated, because Otello is influenced by his wife. As soon as Cassio is out of sight, Iago declares his belief that a cruel God created man wicked, and life has no meaning. Iago watches as Cassio approaches Desdemona in the garden, and when Otello comes in, the lieutenant makes casual remarks about Desdemona’s fidelity. Softened by his wife’s beauty, Otello greets her, but she brings up the question of Cassio’s demotion, annoying him. When she offers a handkerchief to wipe his brow, he throws it to the ground, where her attendant, Emilia, retrieves it. As Desdemona tries to calm Otello, Iago orders Emilia (his wife) to give him the handkerchief. Otello asks to be alone, and the others leave, except for Iago, who hangs back to observe Otello’s growing suspicion. To fan the flames, Iago invents a story about how Cassio spoke lovingly of Desdemona in his sleep. Then he mentions her handkerchief, saying he saw it in Cassio’s hand. Beside himself, Otello swears to have vengeance, and Iago joins in the oath.
ACT III. In the armory, Iago tells Otello that more proof is forthcoming of his betrayal by his wife and Cassio. Desdemona enters, and Otello speaks calmly until she revives the subject of Cassio. When Otello demands the handkerchief he gave her, she again pleads for Cassio. Otello calls the shocked woman a courtesan and dismisses her. He cries out that heaven could have afflicted him with anything but this, then hides as Iago returns with Cassio. Iago flashes the handkerchief he stole and leads Cassio on in banter in such a way that Otello overhears only fragments and thinks they are talking about Desdemona. As trumpets announce dignitaries from Venice, Otello vows to kill his wife that very night. The Moor greets the Venetian Lodovico, who recalls him to Venice and appoints Cassio to govern Cyprus. Losing control at this news, Otello pushes his wife to the floor with insults. He orders everyone out and collapses in a seizure as Iago gloats over him, crying, “Behold the Lion!” 12 OTELLO
ACT IV. As Emilia helps Desdemona prepare for bed, the frightened woman sings of a maiden forsaken by her lover. Startled by the wind, she bids Emilia an impassioned farewell and kneels in prayer before retiring. As soon as she has dozed off, Otello enters through a secret door and kisses his wife. This wakens her, but the jealous man, deaf to her protestations of innocence, strangles her. Emilia knocks with news that Cassio has killed Roderigo; entering, she is horrified to find the dying Desdemona and summons Cassio, Lodovico and Iago, and lago escapes when his wife reveals his treachery. Realizing the truth behind his crime, Otello pulls out a concealed dagger and stabs himself, dying upon a final kiss. – courtesy of Opera News
