Ştefan Rusu (b. 1964 in Kâietu, Moldova) is a visual artist/freelance curator based in Chisinau and Bucharest. Ştefan's artistic and curatorial agenda is closely connected to undergoing processes and changes which occurred in the post-socialist societies after 1989. Among his preoccupations are the aspects of mass-manipulation techniques, political engineering strategies (political engineering), forms of colonisation and culturalisation that culminated in some cases with the construction of artificial states and new nations, as it is the case of Autonomous Republic of Birobidjan, Republic of Karelia or Republic of Moldova. Since the year 2000 he has been involved in the evolution of K:SAK Center from Chisinau in the frame of which he develops curatorial projects, screenings, presentations and art programmes. Between 2005 and 2007 he was involved in the production of AlteArteTV project where he was appointed as editor-in-chief. In 2005-2006 he attended the Curatorial Training Program at Stichting De Appel from Amsterdam where he cocurated Mercury in Retrograde. His largest up to date artist project that deals with the public space is Flat Space, which was designed as a functional replica of socialist apartment. The project is a sample of architecture born from urban planning—a living area extracted from a typified socialist building block and placed in public space, where it function as an open space/platform activated by young artists. Currently he is developing CHISINAU - Art, Research in the Public Sphere – a new curatorial project which aim is to explore the dominant institutional and political discourses that have shaped the society and the urban landscape of the city of Chisinau in the course of its recent history (http://www.art.md/2010/sfera_publica_en.html).
