Taiwan stands at EV forefront with a complete supply chain
K
nown around the world for its ICT industry, lithium batteries, system-integration technology, Taiwan is now the world leader in two-wheel electric vehicles (EV) with outstanding applied experience and expertise in the design and production of its own four-wheel EV. Taiwan is at the forefront of the electric vehicle revolution with a complete supply chain and industry clusters for motor and control modules, system integration, auto energy storage systems, power management systems and other key EV technologies. Meanwhile, Taiwan has launched several models of whole EVs some already licensed and are running the wheels. 2012 is set to be am exciting year for Taiwan’s EV industry, as it readies itself to put EVs into mass production and China is expected to reduce tariffs on Taiwan auto parts, bicycles and bicycles parts. The electric vehicle industry has the full support of the Taiwan government, which has invested $333 million to put 3,000 electric vehicles on the road by 2013. It also invested another 160,000 electric vehicles by 2014 and business grants are also available. It is estimated that last year Taiwan’s industry grew 47% year-on-year. By 2020, there will be an estimated 200,000 electric vehicles on Taiwan roads. In 2009, the government set an industry standard for the electric motorcycles, battery recharge systems, lithium battery packs, functions and safety (the Taiwan E-Scooter Standard, or TES), which also complies to international standards of quality, safety and function. Taiwan-made EVs are just as good as those from Japan, Europe and the US. And Taiwan EVC manufacturers also provide customized OEM services and strict regulations protect IPs. One Taiwanese company, Kenfa, is working with the Kaohsiung city government to development a battery swap system for the southern city. A battery swap system works quicker than recharging batteries and will be used in 30 battery swap stations that will service 5,000 electric motorcycles.
Taiwan’s motorcycle industry at the cutting of new technology
O
wning a motorcycle in Taiwan is like owning a cell phone – everyone has one! So it is no wonder Taiwan is also known as the Kingdom of Motorcycles and is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of motorcycles and motorcycle parts with over 100 OEM manufacturers. In 2010, the output value of Taiwan’s motorcycle industry was US$2.8 billion, 48.52% of which came from motorcycle parts production. Because of the intense competition on the small island, Taiwan motorcycle manufacturers invest heavily in R&D and have a near 100% local content rate. Their complete supply chain includes motorcycles, scooters and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) as well as engines, parts, frames, accessories and equipment for noise and emission inspection, maintenance, and component and accessory manufacturing. With a history of over 50 years, the motorcycle manufacturing industry is one of Taiwan’s mature industries and Taiwan motorcycle manufacturers are known worldwide for their innovation, reliability, quality and reasonable prices. For example, some of Japan’s biggest motorcycle brands such as Yamaha, Mitsubishi and Honda and Germany’s BMW buy their parts from Taiwan. Each year, Taiwan is expanding into the international market and most Taiwanese motorcycle manufacturers also have factories in Vietnam, Indonesia and China, making them the best partners to trade with countries in Asia. Taiwan’s motorcycle manufacturing industry is also at the cutting of new technology. With the help of government, it has already set an industry standard for electric scooters and are researching and developing new technologies that will eventually replace gas and diesel-powered motorcycles. Taiwan also leads the field in customized motorcycles. Because of the sheer number of identical motorcycles on the island, there is a growing market for customized motorcycles and its manufacturers can provide everything from engine accessories, exterior decoration, shock absorbers to lights and data recorders.
