MOTORCYCLE TAIWAN gears up with Asia’s best Taiwan’s powered two-wheelers (PTW) ride on quality & customization
T
he 8th annual MOTORCYCLE TAIWAN (The 2013 Taiwan Int’l Motorcycle Show) in April joins global manufacturers to offer Asia a world selection of the finest at the only vertically integrated event (with both whole bikes and parts). The four-day event at TWTC Hall 1 from April 10 to 13 uses more than 10,000 sq. meters of floor space dedicated to the display Taiwan’s best motorcycles, scooters and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), along with engines, parts, frames, accessories and equipment for noise and emission inspection, maintenance and component as well as accessory manufacturing. The show hosts 250 leading exhibitors who are using 700 booths who getting set to meet 18,000 visitors and hundreds of members from the press. MOTORCYCLE TAIWAN is organized by TAITRA (The Taiwan External Trade and Development Council) and TTVMA (the Taiwan Transportation Vehicle Manufacturers Association) and will feature such activities test and ride events, new product announcements, procurement meetings and an industry forum. With Taiwan having become one of the most important supply sources of high-quality and reasonably priced original equipment parts, this year’s MOTORCYCLE TAIWAN will focus on the quality and customization capability of Taiwan’s powered two-wheeler (PTW) industry. Taiwan’s motorcycle industry shifts to new modes in safety & energy Motorcycle industry at crossroads in supplying new product lines
What would Taiwanese do without their beloved motorcycle? They bring life, liberty and joy that all can afford.
I
n 2012 there were four million motorcycles in Taiwan with sales in that year reaching 620,000 units. Taiwan’s motorcycle industry is now at one of the most important juncture since it began R&D in the nineties. The big hurdle for Taiwan R&D is transcending a new obstacle course of preferences with new specs in safety, environmental protection, energy saving, lightweight design and new energy sources. The good news is that four-stroke motorcycles have to become mainstream products gradually replacing the highly polluting two-stroke motorcycles. Meanwhile, government has continued its decade’s old quest to encourage the industry to develop their own parts as a way to prevent reliance on imports. And as a result of these efforts, Taiwan’s manufactures have established a complete supply chain. The design and production of motorcycles with displacement of lower than 150 cc have been completely independent in recent years, with motorcycle quality on par with the Japanese. The number of motorcycles with displacement higher than 150 cc sold in 2012 has increased slightly due to the new rule of allowing motorcycles with displacement between 250 cc 550 cc to travel on highways. industry can now offer different kinds of parts to meet every whim of the customer from unique body shells to trendy exhaust pipes. Taiwan’s motorcyclist clothing and accessories industry has also boomed with the popularity of motorcycles. This related industry supplies helmets, clothes, boots, gloves, and every other type of fashionable and functional accessory. The greatest customers are the riders of customized motorcycles who often dawn trendy personal items to match their motors. Taiwan’s motorcycle industry has been successfully expanding around the world due to its excellent product quality, fast delivery and reasonable prices. Since 2009 the government has been focusing on threeyear development plans to promote electric motorcycles. the United States and Asia. Manufacturers such as E-One Moli Energy Corp., Chroma ATE Inc. and Gongin Precision Ind. Co., to name just a few, are among the leading Taiwanese companies that have flourished in supplying parts to car manufacturers such as Tesla Motors and BMW. Although in Taiwan electric cars haven’t yet seen sales take off as fast as electric motorcycles, electric car manufactures have already geared up for mass production. In 2012, Taiwanese automaker Luxgen Motor was the first in the world to announce electric MPV and SUV models ready for mass production. At the core of Taiwan’s electric vehicle industry are the manufacturers massproducing outstanding, lightweight batteries from lithium-ion cells. By increasing the scale of battery production — forcing down component costs while promoting R&D on the energy density of batteries in the process — Taiwanese companies have managed to remain ahead of international competition. Many manufacturers have designed highfrequency battery rechargers that efficiently cut toxic emissions, expand batteries’ life │ EV TAIWAN
spans and reduce energy consumption, while preventing the battery from bursting. In addition to developing new battery technology, Taiwan’s electric vehicle industry has also been working on designing battery exchange systems that allow for quick and efficient battery changing. Many manufacturers have teamed up with local governments to set up battery-swap stations for convenient, ecofriendly battery replacement. With the increasingly strict international standards on energy efficiency, the government has set the goal of decreasing the amount of CO2 emissions in 2020 to the same level recorded in 2008. In the meantime, Taiwan has already divided its electric vehicle development plan into three stages. The government expected to have 3,000 electric vehicles on the road by 2013, which is the end of the first stage. From 2014 to 2016, the government wants to target both the domestic and international electric vehicle markets, hoping to generate over 60,000 electric vehicles, including 15,000 for export. By the end of the third stage, the government expects Taiwan to be one of the top electric vehicles exporting countries in the entire world, selling 1 million electric vehicles annually. ■
