Editor’s note With a stroke of midnight, we got our freedom. But that was 71 years ago. Do we honestly feel free today? There would be many who are devoid of the factual concept that we have indulged ourselves in some quite unscrupulous situations, digging out of those, is an extremely tiresome task. I understand that the people of our great nation do not wish to speak or indulge in anything that is not profitable to one self, and also from the fear of losing things far greater than money. Many recently have lost their lives due to minute avoidable issues, and some for just raising their voices against the domineering forces. The guided steps of planned separation of our nation’s unanimity, has recently taken us back to the same time, when 71 years ago we crawled out of that pit of madness. For what? I sincerely hope we find track of the right path again, and take the nation to the heights it was destined to achieve. Till then, who can we depend on, to protect us, to keep us together, to let our right to breathe air without the permission slips or paying taxes, a right, and not a commodity? Forget infrastructure, If we cannot depend on something or someone, to keep equality, peace, love, unity, that will uphold the virtues that our constitution stands for, and even to protect us to be gulped down by one major entity, the ‘in’ in the word Independence holds no adequate value. We are then, ironically, just dependent on a system that leeches on us.

FREEDOM: A CONCEPT FOR THE CONSCIOUS by Shripriya Shetty

In the wake of the 71st anniversary of our nation’s independence from the British Raj, before we bind ourselves with a feeling of patriotism and fully indulge with the preparations and celebrations of the grand day, let’s take a moment to really understand what freedom is to us today. Freedom: the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants. The simplest meaning of the word that one is likely to find in a dictionary seems to be confined only within these thick bound books in old dusty libraries or the many folds of the internet. This definition, against the harshness of reality, is more an international joke than the truth. A generation brainwashed by hungry politicians disguised as genies granting the only wish that is absolute freedom while subjecting its people to total control. The country’s youth are carefully nurtured since birth and programmed to act, speak and think in a certain way and manipulated to believe that the idea to stray away from these behavioural guidelines

is to stray away from freedom. While the nation celebrates its 71st anniversary of freedom this month, it also celebrates everything that it’s not and neglects every life lost fighting for its basic right to live every day in these post-colonial years. Under the limelight of modern grievances, the victory against the British rule now is barely an accomplishment in a country that not only has political and religious conflicts but also cultural ones. Being the largest sovereign, secular and democratic republic, or at least what it claims to be in its constitution, India’s plight has only worsened with persisting human right issues complicated by the country’s large size, over population, poor economic conditions and cultural and religious intolerances amongst its people. To enjoy absolute freedom and to exercise it in the full sense of the word can only remain a far-fetched concept as humans are bound to the laws of the nature and to morality and social etiquettes. That is, it is a person’s responsibility to exercise freedom efficiently and not in the expense of others. However, this does not seem to be the case. The root cause of the problem lies not just in a flawed social and political systems but also in every individual’s corrupt thought process. Perhaps it is a human trait to feel powerful and competitive always, that drives for one’s necessity to either be a leader influencing a mass following or to be a part of a greater community segregated based on their traits and status to feel superior over the rest. These superiority/ inferiority complexes create a pathway to servitude. Enslavement comes in many forms and of all the reasons that have caused this social instability, there is a very small glitch that is often simply overlooked as normal or unavoidable but in retrospect does a greater damage to the whole system- Human conversations. The power of communication as a tool is capable to majorly influence the thoughts of an individual. The various languages that are used by humans to converse are unfiltered and filthy and disguised in a way to suit personal requirements. War and Peace are almost synonym to each other, as in the ways of the world there is a necessity for war to restore peace, there is a need for superior control to feel protected and there is a need to jointly hate another community to feel loved and connected to one’s community. The children and adults of every household are exposed to beliefs and ideas in way to feel superior over those of another household. Young minds are taught in educational institutions, with outdated facts communicated to them in an environment that does not encourage dialogue. They are to accept and memorize whatever is given strictly and all their thoughts that do not coincide with a syllabus are considered irrelevant and questions remain answered. They are then bred in an orthodox society with appointed gender roles that supposedly define their existence and to go against it is unlawful, ungodly and rebellious. The ones who slightly stray away from these societal norms are given a good beating which is then justified as an act of love to guide them in the right
7
way. Yet again, love and hate are almost synonymous! In a country like India, with its ingrained patriarchy, it’s a choice between freedom and safety for its women. The country has been on the global forefront with its horrifying rape cases that has made each one of us feel a lot less Indian. The fear of being a victim to such atrocities has created a need for dependency in the minds of women that a good lot prefer to join the patriarchal bandwagon to feel safe and protected and develop a deep sense of hatred against feminist women. This negates the whole idea of freedom where in women have subjected themselves into imprisonment and slavery due to their own fear for of life and for the lack of a better escape. To live a free-spirited lifestyle for an Indian woman typically translates to living life on the edge. The birth of a girl child in this country comes with a user manual that precisely describes how to dress, talk and behave and objectification is a bonus regardless of their age. It’s also critical for each one of them to abide by these rules to remain safe and sane. The struggle for freedom as a being is a long and self-draining process. It’s a vicious cycle in the peak of which could lead to an outburst of emotions and hatred that could initiate mass destruction. The journey to total freedom starts with accepting freedom as a state of mind. In a world that’s constantly changing, one can only hope for a progressive future and for a day when freedom, equality, liberty, democracy can be celebrated in its true forms. A day when speaking out and standing up is not accompanied with the risk of losing a life. Until then, the idea of absolute freedom remains a daydream to most of us and perhaps to some a concept above their wildest imagination.

THE VEIL by Sukiran Singh
The Theatre unfolds, the mist floats away, What is my own and what is to stray? Where blood is bound to colour, but red has lost its valor, Where soulless, once the buoyant beliefs, Slay the frail for the frailest beefs. The Theatre unfolds, the mist floats away, What is my own and what is to stray? A place that was Golden, Nothing today but a virtue molten, Where she cried to cling on woven threads, But tossed on muffled and crackling beds. The Theatre unfolds, the mist floats away, What is my own and what is to stray? Clinging to past, the bygones of time, Rusted bronze, in era of prime, I am, I was, I will be, you are dust of my sole, Marching to the mountain, noosing the control. The Theatre unfolds, the mist floats away, What is my own and what is to stray? Illusions of Grandeur, speeches of might, The walls are trembling, no ear to plight, Finding foes with-out, lurchers loot within, The land of bliss in distress, sobbing hungry kin. The Theatre unfolds, the mist floats away, What is my own and what is to stray? The winds shall turn to greener shores, the laws of nature shall fill the pores. Mights have vanished, and new mights will,

INDEPENDENT WOMAN?? by Simarjot Wadhwa
Image : Pixabay
71 years of freedom of India. Is it staggering or going firm? A question that looms large; its silence has taken the shape of fear; probably wading its way through darkness or taking strides to brightness. Constitution has not deprived any woman from being independent. She stands bold and beautiful in all circumstances, thus, carving a niche for herself in this male dominated society. She personifies the concept of independence and portrays her characteristics in every possible way. She is bestowed with charisma, charm, grace, poise and benevolence. In fact, she is an epitome of strength and fortitude. Nevertheless, she is yet searching for her own identity as an independent woman. The contemporary woman is split apart. Though her altitude to success is glorified yet her ordeals have not receded. Women politicians, page 3 women celebrities, women working in public or private sectors are not different to the stories of malice. Many of them have been maligned either physically or verbally. 71 years of independence may have changed the parameters of achievements for a woman to some extent but the saga laments the apathy of a larger sec-

section of women in this country. The slogan ‘Beti Padhao Beti Bachao’ resonates a sham and irony plays an ugly role where a daughter’s presence is abated. She succumbs to honour killings, social pressures , rapes and prejudices . The society of hypocrites manipulates the same daughter for its own benefits and hinders her growth. As per the reports, approximately 85% people are educated but the skepticism prevails upon the word ‘educated’ as a large number of people are mere ‘literates’ and are enslaved by their own opinions. Being oblivion is one aspect but being bonded by shackles is another. The deity is worshipped as ‘maa’ and the cow is revered as ‘gai mata’ but what about a ‘mother’ in flesh and blood? Ethics and values sound as mockery to mother’s existence. Her old age longs for her own children’s care but now she is isolated and dejected. Her independence has cast a spell and she is left in lurch. Unfortunately, the land where Goddess is respected, a woman is raped or molested. Her dignity is at stake and the so called law makers sans sensitivities. She is treated as mere object or commodity. The imposters impose their ideologies on women right from the kind of attire to be worn to the kind of life to be lived. Is this independence? The patriarchal society has shrouded her existence with the cloud of uncertainty. She is thrashed and beaten yet she emboldens herself to face the challenges of life. To be really independent, a thorough makeover of opinions is required. Do we intend to give space to women for letting them reach heights? Are the different Acts made by the law just the documents or they truly mean something? Various projects or welfare programs have been initiated but ground realities differ from the printed words. Even after so many years, concept of independence is arbitrary for a woman. She is yet struggling to be ‘somebody rather than nobody’.

FALGUNI SHANE PEACOCK ‘AMOUR DE JUNAGARH’ Falguni Shane Peacock’s new collection features a medley between the queen of the French capital and the grand palace of Junagarh – Rajasthan’s cultural jewel. As the kaleidoscopic carousel illuminated with light, it casted a shadow on the fluttering peacock across the hall gliding with other wild and exotic beings at the carnival assembled inside the Juna Mahal. In the honour of the Parisian queen who was enamored by the ingenious display of colour and magnanimity. Every detail accumulates into translating a visionary saga of love.
