URBAN AGRO PARK Thesis Typology: Mixed-Use Development Site Area: 21 Acres (84984sqm)

Location: Manama, Bahrain Year: 2021

Typology: Mixed-Use Development

“Almost one in seven people around the world are chronically hungry, lacking enough food to be healthy and lead active lives, although enough food exists for all of the people in the world.”

(Shintarou & Eguchi, 2010)

In present times, the arable lands of Bahrain have been degrading at an unnatural and exponential rate about 30 to 35 times the historic rate. Bahrain was once a tropical paradise, known as the island of a million palm trees. But in a few decades the face of the land changed dramatically and the iconic date palm groves have almost completely disappeared due to the rapid urbanization the development of artificial islands. Amounting to the loss of 12 million hectares of land which has dire effects on poor communities globally. “If you want to feed the world in 2050 then in the next 40 years we need to produce the same amount of food as we did in the last 8,000 years.” Walkthrough https://youtu.be/rFz1I-bs9lY

6 I Urban Agro Park I Bahrain

(Shintarou & Eguchi, 2010)

The decrease in agricultural and green lands in Bahrain is mainly due to two inter-related factors. The first is the salinization of the land because of the deterioration of groundwater quality used for irrigation, and the second is the transfer of agricultural lands to urban complexes for better economic returns.

INTEGRATED LIVING SYSTEMS “ Agritecture is the art, science, and business of integrating agriculture into cities.”

incorporate agriculture into the surrounding city environment in very different ways.

The term was first popularized by our Founder, Henry Gordon Smith, in Fall 2011. When Henry was researching how cities could use agriculture to address environmental, social and economic challenges, and to develop resilient food systems in the face of climate change.

Architects frequently design impossible vertical farming and urban agriculture concepts that ignore the realities of successful farming operations. In contrast, agriculturalists and entrepreneurs often miss important design, aesthetic, and social integration opportunities when they develop urban farms.

By definition, AGRITECTURE is about applying architectural thinking when designing agriculture for the built environment. In practice, architects and urban farmers

AGRITECTURE is about integrating the disciplines of agriculture and architecture so that urban farms can be both practical and well-designed all at once.

THE CURVE Urban Design Typology: Open Public Space Development Site Area: 1.54 Acres (6233sqm)

Location: Ooty, TamilNadu Year: 2020

Typology: Open Public Space Development

Located at the centre of the hill town Udhagamandalam, popularly referred to as Ooty by tourists is the Hobart Park. Better known as the ''Race Course'', except during the derby, its introverted identity is somewhat in contrast to the bustling tourist town. Horse Racing under 'Turf Rules' began at the Hobart Park in Ooty in 1894. Named after Robert Hobart, the famous governor of Madras, and more importantly, uncle to John Sullivan, the Founder of the British Settlement at Ootacamund, the anglicized name for Udhgamandalam. The ''Hobart Park Cross Street'' connecting the Commercial street witht he Ettines street, is the stretch of street which is designed. With a vision for the Hobart Park to be a major public place with diverse activites., the selection of the Hobart Park Cross Street becomes more obvious as this street could pottentially be the most pedestrian friendly access to the Hobart Park. So, the aim of the project is to develop an entrance Plaza for the Hobart Park, that doubles up as a standalone public place with various activites, adjacent to the Hobart Park Cross Street with seamless intergration of the two. It will be called as the ''Plaza by the Hobart Park''.The main attraction of the park is the triple storey view point from which incredible views of the entire area can be experinced. 36 I The Curve I Ooty

DRAVIDIAN PAVILION ANDC 2018 Team: Suresh Ranganathan Sumaiya Meera Gani Roshika KP Roshitha Reddy Siddharthan B Johans P Varghese Sanjey RS

Location: Housur, Karnataka Year: 2018

The brief was to identify the problems of a LIMINAL SPACE (a connecting space or a transition space between two spaces eg. space between two buildings, hallways/corridors) and propose to solve the existing problems while retaining the historical and cultural values of the place through the design. The LIMINAL SPACE selected for this entry was an interstate border in the south of India. It connects the two states of TamilNadu and Karnataka sharing borders with Hosur and Banglore. Apart from minor issues in the site, the major issuse is the KAVERI RIVER dispute. The people have forgotten that both the states were a dravidian state as a result they have lost their sense of unity and brotherhood. The current scenario requires political interventions to sucessufully create this impact but as Architects we can adress the socio-economic & cultural issues. The Dravidian Pavillion is a public space where people from not just the two states but all over can come and interact with each other. The Pavilion has exhibition spaces, leisure spaces and children’s play area. There also is a curated space for truck drivers to stop & relax as well an experince centre for bikers. Religion, caste, culture, language; instead of focusing on what makes our communities different we need to come to common terms. This proposal aims to create a bridge between the disputed communites & states; and make them relaise that ‘‘ The only thing that needs to be celebarated is humanity & brotherhood’’

ZEPHYR GRATH ANDC 2017 Team: Suresh Ranganathan A Siva R Akash Ragunathan Chezian Lelaram T Sumaiya Meera Gani CV Aishwarya Sekaran

Location: Chennai, TamilNadu Year: 2017

The brief was to identify an abandoned open space in an urban area and propose a public space which would give life to the place. The selected site at Keelkattalai, Chennai was an abandoned park which was destroyed by a cyclone Varadha in 2016. Due to the abandonment many explicit activities took place here. By proposing to redevelope the place, people of the neighbourhood have a place for their kids to play after school, the elderly to look after them or enjoy a walk. The site was first cleaned and cleared of harmful objects. The planning of various spaces such as a coir seating, the children’s play area, artifical pond, accupuncture walk area etc. were marked out. The construction of each component followed. The whole project took approximately 45 days to complete. Testimonials were also recieved from the people of the neighbourhood
