This full-day, two-week immersion program is enhanced by museum visits, an architectural tour and exposure to music and theater in the Grand Center Arts District. By experiencing the arts using all senses, students will be encouraged to create work in the studios that develops their art-making skills and explores the overall urban arts theme. The Journalism and Documentary Film Academy is a hands-on media production program in which participants write, direct and edit short narrative, documentary or journalistic film projects. Using Midtown St. Louis as a backdrop, participants will produce projects focused in the areas of food, fashion/style, sports or travel. Projects will be based upon fieldwork conducted in Midtown St. Louis and trips to local restaurants, shops, media production studios and sports venues. The weeklong program ends with a minifilm festival on Friday afternoon where participants premiere their films for an audience.

Students will work in a high-end media production space where they will learn to use digital equipment and Final Cut Pro editing software, as well as SLU’s broadcast studio. SLU professors with professional experience in digital production and journalism will lead the academy while guest instructors will include a Los Angeles-based television editor. The academy is designed for high school students who want to learn more about careers in broadcast journalism, documentary filmmaking, video editing or television production. The 2014 Engineering and Aviation Academy will host students for a six-day, five-night session where they will learn about all the academic programs provided at Parks College. Students will work together to compete in daily competitions. On the last day of the academy, their families are invited to attend a luncheon and meet current Parks faculty, staff and students. During the academy, faculty and student mentors guide students through hands-on activities in aerospace and mechanical engineering, flight science, biomedical engineering, civil engineering, computer and electrical engineering, and physics. Students will also attend an off-campus group outing, take a flight in a Diamond DA-20 airplane and explore Saint Louis University’s campus.

The Summer Institute for Academics and Leadership at Saint Louis University is an exciting opportunity for accelerated learners that focuses on academic core classes (majors), elective learning (minors) and leadership training based on Stephen Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. This summer residential experience is for students entering the 7th or 8th grade to gain knowledge, acquire leadership skills and have fun on the beautiful SLU campus. All classes will be advanced and majors will focus on literacy, math, science and leadership. In addition, students will be able to choose two minors. Some of the minors offered will be robotics, debate, mock trial, art (including stained glass creation) and archeology. We offer hundreds of courses both on campus and online in a variety of subject areas. From History 112: Origins of the Modern World to Communication 120: Public Speaking, there’s bound to be a SLU course that will help you have a get-ahead summer. High school students who have completed their sophomore year with a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 system, may, with written recommendation and grade verification from their high school counselor or principal, enroll as a Visiting Young Scholar during the summer and be eligible to receive college credit. Approved high school students may register for introductory courses (100 or 200 level) for which they have the proper preparation and prerequisites. Retreats: peaceful locations for personal and group reflection. You can count on a Jesuit university to provide ample space for thought, prayer and personal development. Retreat centers include the Manresa Center and the Lay Center for Education and the Arts. The Manresa Center is located just off campus and features 34 bedrooms, a theatre and a chapel. The Lay Center for Education and the Arts, in Louisiana, Mo., features meeting space, audiovisual equipment, a sculpture park and 12 bedrooms.
