Don t drink to drown your sorrows.
Skipping meals is a no-no Never skip a meal if you’re trying to lose weight. If you do, your blood sugar levels will plunge and you’re more likely to crave a sugary fix. And don’t bother with extreme diets – they never work long-term and simply leave you hangry (hungry/angry).
ONE CANNOT THINK WELL ,
Sorrow knows how to swim.
LOVE WELL , SLEE P WELL , IF ONE HAS NOT DINED WELL .
The amount of calories burned through exercise can also be reduced by alcohol. As the body isn’t designed to store alcohol, it tries to get rid of it as fast as possible. This interrupts other processes, such as absorbing nutrients and burning fat. Muscle growth can be hindered too. Growth hormones are released during deep sleep and, because alcohol disrupts sleep, this will have an impact on muscle gain. Drinking excessively can also poison muscle fibres, meaning they don’t adapt as they should.

Exercise some control Alcohol and exercise are not a good combination. It’s common sense not to hit the gym after a couple of drinks. Not only will you become more dehydrated than you usually would, your energy levels, coordination, reactions and concentration will also be impaired, leading to a lacklustre – and possibly dangerous – workout. Similarly, consuming alcohol the night before will have a negative impact on your workout performance the next day. You’ll feel tired quicker because your body won’t be able to eliminate the lactic acid you produce when you exercise, plus your power and strength will be compromised. Not to mention the fact that a hangover can cause dehydration, a headache, sickness and the shakes.

GET HYGGE!
CHOOSING TO BE HAPPY
WRITE A LETTER
Happiness is not ‘one size fits all’, and there are many reasons why people struggle to stay positive. William James, a prominent American psychologist in the nineteenth century, studied why some people are naturally happy while others struggle. Having suffered from depression he had many insights about the pursuit of happiness and believed ultimately it’s a feeling that we choose to have; that the act of believing that you can be happy will in turn lead to your happiness. So the next time you feel low, think back to a time when you were happy, immerse yourself in those thoughts, and truly believe that you can attain that level of positivity again.
Most of us have relatives or friends who live at the other end of the country, or have even emigrated. Give yourself (and them) a boost by sitting down to write a letter by hand, letting them know what you’ve been up to and asking them plenty of questions. Use this as an opportunity to catch up in a way you wouldn’t be able to over the phone or via Facebook, by being honest and open, and perhaps sending a little memento such as a photograph along with your note. You will most likely get a handwritten reply, too, which will add to the sense of joy and satisfaction.

Hygge (pronounced ‘hoo-ga’) is a Danish word that describes the feeling of being cosy, comfortable and at peace with the world. It’s ostensibly about enjoying life’s simple pleasures, like sitting in front of a log fire on a chilly winter’s night, curling up under a blanket with a favourite book, dressing down in comfy slippers and pyjamas or taking time to enjoy a perfectly brewed cup of coffee. Add some hygge to your life with little treats and feel the warm hug it gives you.

Continue to sow seeds of beans, courgettes, sweetcorn and outdoor tomatoes. In mild areas can be sown direct into the garden soil outside, but if in doubt sow into small pots (root trainers for the sweetcorn) or trays.

We at h e r D a m a g e Even though it may feel like spring has arrived, don’t forget that your garden may still be hit by a late frost or two. The soft, tender new growth that is developing on just about everything is especially prone to cold damage. You may also find that weather-damage caused over the last couple of months also becomes more obvious, now that it is surrounded by lush new growth.
Continue to plant main-crop seed potatoes. Plant each tuber with the blunt or ‘rose’ end uppermost so that it has about 5 cm of soil above it and with 35–38 cm between the tubers, and 70–75 cm between the rows. Plant out any remaining greenhouse tomatoes or pepper plants now, either into their final pots or planters or in to the greenhouse border soil. If you have a conservatory or sunny porch, this too could be a good home for a pepper or tomato plant!
78
tips for April
Edibles
Make more successional sowings of vegetable and herb seeds direct in to garden soil, watering well. This is usually the latest you can leave it if you want to order in any garden-ready vegetable plants, so make sure that you do this now as it can be a great way to make up for lost time or catch up on the seed-sowing you never quite managed to do!
Symptoms vary a lot from plant to plant, but discoloration – especially the development of dark brown or black areas or entire leaves – and dieback are very common. Some of the tougher plants may even be damaged, and on these you may see a peculiar bagginess beneath the leaf, almost as if the outermost layer of the leaf is too big for the leaf itself, and often combined with some distortion. Check weather forecasts regularly and, using your local knowledge as well, provided that you can be pretty confident that the worst of the weather is definitely over, prune out damaged areas now.
Regularly hand-weed or hoe around vegetable seedlings that are starting to come up – weeds create a lot of competition for food and moisture and can cause serious setbacks to seedlings. An ‘onion hoe’ has a very small head and is great for weeding in tight spaces.

Aphids Greenfly, blackfly and just about every conceivable colour of aphid are likely to be doing a lot of damage this month. Like most other pests, they are especially fond of soft, succulent plant foliage; they feed by sucking plant sap and may cause a range of symptoms including yellowing, distortion (especially puckering), dieback and general stunting. As aphids are unable to digest all the sugars the sap contains their excreta is itself sugary and is known as ‘honey dew’ – this may also give aphidinfested plants (and their neighbours) a sticky texture. Sometimes the honey dew attracts black mould growth, and this sooty mould covers the plants too. Aphids may also spread plant viruses as they feed and move from plant to plant – so, all in all, you can see why they may need to be controlled! Handsquashing, jetting them off sturdier plants with a strong blast of water or, if necessary, a treatment with plant oil may work. Plant oil is available from garden centres, websites and catalogues, as are soft soaps or soft soap solution, which all work well. I also try to encourage aphid-feeding birds into the area by hanging up bird feeders close by.

•
Swim, surf, snorkel, kayak or paddle-board in shark-infested waters (and, if needs be, get yourself rescued by the Manly Surf Life-Saving Club).
•
Walk or cycle the Manly Scenic Walkway, keeping an eye open for whales, dolphins and penguins in the bay alongside.
•

•

GE NE R AL INTEREST
In 2003, mountain climber Aron Ralston was descending a narrow canyon in Utah when a boulder slipped and trapped his right hand against a rock face. Having tried unsuccessfully for three days to pull his arm free, he decided to amputate the lower part of his forearm with the small blade of his pocketknife, but it was too blunt to cut through bone. Becoming delirious and reduced to drinking his own urine by day five, he hit upon the idea of breaking the bones in his arm by snapping them between the boulder and the rock face, which he duly did. This allowed him to cut through the gaps in his bones in about an hour, following which he abseiled down the remainder of the rock and began the 5-mile hike back to his truck. He stumbled upon some tourists, who alerted the emergency services, who airlifted him to hospital within four hours of his DIY amputation. At the time of his accident, Ralston had been working his way through Colorado’s ‘fourteeners’ (fifty-three mountains over 14,000 feet). Undaunted by his little mishap in Utah, he climbed the final three in 2005, becoming the first person to climb the lot solo and in winter. He is now an inspirational speaker, encouraging others to overcome adversity in life. So the next time you feel a bit down in the dumps, break your own arm, cut a bit of it off and crack on with your life. It’s the manly thing to do. Note: You can read the full story in Ralston’s 2004 book Between a Rock and a Hard Place, or watch it unfold in the 2010 Danny Boyle movie 127 Hours.

When it comes to ‘boys and their toys’, drone technology has excited as much as anything in recent years, whether for civil or military purposes. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), to give them their proper title, were first used as target practice for warships as long ago as World War One, before developing into sophisticated military surveillance and hunter-killer systems. As with many gadgets originally developed by the military, the technology has since spread into other areas, including the following:
•
Aerial photography and videos
• •
Product and postal deliveries
• • • • •
Policing
Disaster relief, including delivery of food and medical supplies Bomb disposal Pollution monitoring Anti-poaching surveillance Wildfire detection
• •
Crop spraying Hobby flying and drone racing
•
Video selfies of you or your friends doing cool stuff
•
Keeping an eye on your property (if you need an excuse to buy a drone or have one put on your Christmas list, say that you need it to keep an eye on your roof tiles and gutters)
The hobby-flying market has given us cool names like Parrot BeBop 2 FPV Drone with SkyController 2 and GoPro Karma Drone with Hero 6, but generally we still have to choose between longer battery life and higher-resolution imagery. It’s only a matter of time before both come together in a single drone at an affordable price.

Shape the remaining balls to form drops, then squash them to form the petals. Each rose needs at least fifteen petals. Make sure the petals are different sizes; you’ll place the smaller ones in the centre of the rim and the larger ones on the outside.
5
Begin to form the rose. At this point in the process, the petals will be almost dry and won’t stick together, so it will be necessary to apply a little water with a brush that will act as glue.

Decorate the top rim with some roses. To make the roses, use pink and green modelling clay. Make a bunch of pink balls, about the size of a pea, and crush each with the tip of your finger.
3
Roll the dough with your finger, as shown in the following image. We will call this shape the heart of the rose. Each rose needs a single heart, so make as many as roses as you’d like or fill up the pot’s rim entirely.
Place the petals one by one to form the rose. You can use as many petals as you want; my roses have between twelve and sixteen petals each. To give a touch of green colour, place four or five elongated leaves on the last petal layer.

Soap bars instead of shower gel
Cancel microbeads and microplastics
replacing liquid hand soap and shower gel with solid bars of soap should be one of the easiest changes in this book. after all, many of us likely use one or the other already. You may be helping to cut down plastic usage without even knowing it. there are a great number of solid soaps already available in supermarkets, from fragrance-free bars for sensitive skin to designer soaps for those who like a bit of luxury. Unlike packaged liquid soaps, soap bars do make a bit of mess so a little stone or ceramic tray can help cut down on cleaning.
Microbeads and microplastics are pieces of plastic smaller than 5 mm. they are non-biodegradable and are found in many bath, shower and cosmetics products. as of 2018, the use of microbeads in ‘rinse-off’ products such as exfoliating scrubs and toothpastes is banned in many countries, including the UK, italy, new Zealand and the Us. Despite this, most laws allow for other microplastics in cosmetics such as lipsticks, or in sun creams or detergents. check the ingredients list for polyethylene (Pe), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (Pet), polymethyl methacrylate (PMMa), polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and nylon to help you avoid using products featuring microplastics.

Game-changers
Since the AIDS crisis of the 1980s there has been a lot of fear and stigma around HIV. Things are beginning to change thanks to the tireless work of certain people and organisations like the National AIDS Trust and the Terrence Higgins Trust, but there is still a lot of stigma associated with HIV or being HIV-positive. Representation in parliament has always been an important part of the fight for equality, so when Adrian Hyyrylainen-Trett, a parliamentary candidate in the 2015 general election for the Liberal Democrats in Vauxhall, opened up about his status, he became the first openly HIV-positive person to stand for parliament and joins just a handful of openly HIV-positive people working in politics today. Hyyrylainen-Trett joined the Liberal Democrats in 2006 and has worked with the party’s LGBTQ+ group and as an independent adviser to the Metropolitan Police LGBT Advisory Group. He campaigns heavily on mental health, LGBTQ+ rights, HIV-related issues and drug and sex addiction to raise awareness and help change attitudes.

Key Events
Sick of the harassment LGBTQ+ people had been receiving in the Castro district of San Francisco, a group of gay men used the costumes that they had at their disposal – a bunch of habits from a production of The Sound of Music – and some clown make-up to hide their identities and protested around the city on Easter Sunday 1979. They called themselves the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence as a middle finger to the established Catholic religion, and the first sisters named themselves Sister Vicious Power Hungry Bitch (or Sister Vish for short), Sister Missionary Position (Sister Mish), Sister Hysterectoria-Agnes, and Reverend Mother. During the HIV/AIDS crisis of the 1980s, the Sisters were the first group on the ground providing actual help, advice and guidance to people who needed it, and produced the first safesex pamphletsus. They were officially branded heretics of the Catholic church when they performed an exorcism on an effigy of the Pope in 1987 as a protest to the homophobic messaging coming from the Vatican.

A nice one! But seriously, there are all sorts of different types of diet based on the ethical and healthy exclusion of animal products. I exclude meat, fish and shellfish from my diet sometimes – you’re a flexitarian! You may prefer to not eat those products but make exceptions in certain circumstances. (If you have a meat/fish/shellfish meal at least once a week, you’re probably still an omnivore.) FREDDIE MERCURY 1946-1991 HIS SUPERPOWERS
Amazing vocalist, energetic frontman, songwriter, one of the greatest singers in the history of pop music.
Freddie Mercury, the unapologetically flamboyant lead vocalist of rock band, Queen. The person that gifted us with classic hits like ‘Killer Queen’, an impressive four-octave vocal range and some iconic looks to boot. Having admired the stylings of Brian May and Roger Taylor as the duo, Smile, Mercury encouraged the pair to become more experimental. Thus, Queen was born in 1970. Queen produced some of the most well-remembered rock hits of the era, such as ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and ‘I Want to Break Free’. Mercury’s performance with Queen at Live Aid 1985 is widely remembered as one of his most impressive, in which he commanded the undivided attention of the huge audience. A note sustained by Mercury during an acapella segment of this performance would be remembered as ‘The Note Heard around the World’. Though Mercury was known by friends to be a shyer person than his on-stage persona shows, he was also known to enjoy a party. Though he attended many, one of his most notable nights involved The People’s Princess, Princess Diana. To avoid the tabloid mess of the People’s Princess attending the then infamous gay bar The Royal Vauxhall Tavern, Mercury, actress Cleo Rocos and Kenny Everett disguised Diana as a gay male model. The disguise worked, partially due to Mercury’s distracting star power.

Mercury’s sexuality has often been a topic of debate. Tabloids and journalists would constantly attempt to out Mercury, but he saw no need to explain his lifestyle. This made Mercury something of an LGBTQ inspiration, never hiding his authentic self and refusing to justify his sexuality. This was during a time when homosexuality had only recently been decriminalised, with the LGBTQ community often still treated with contempt. Mercury showed the world that being queer wasn’t something to be looked down on or to be ashamed of. Though Freddie Mercury’s untimely death in 1991 was tragic, it represented an important event in the history of AIDS due to Freddie’s high profile. The remaining members of Queen founded The Mercury Phoenix Trust in Mercury’s memory. Since then the Trust has raised millions for various AIDS charities. Having been a close friend until Mercury’s death, Princess Diana became a patron for the National AIDS Trust and devoted her efforts to promoting awareness of HIV. The day before his death, Mercury stated that he hoped people worldwide would join him in the fight against the disease.

HER INCREDIBLE STORY
DR MAYA ANGELOU 1928-2014 HER SUPERPOWERS
Poet, storyteller, activist, dancer, director, civil rights leader, survivor. Inspirational – and then some. 2
Maya Angelou. The name behind some of Instagram’s most #empowering quotes. But did you know that this wonder-lady was the first black woman to write a major US screenplay? Or that it was five years of being mute that developed her world-inspiring love for language? It’s safe to say that Maya was incredibly special. Born in 1928 in Missouri, Marguerite ‘Maya’ Angelou’s childhood was far from easy. At just eight years old, she was raped by her mother’s boyfriend. When Maya found the courage to speak out about this, her rapist was murdered by her uncles for his crime. It was this harrowing experience that led to Maya becoming mute. Convinced her ‘voice was so powerful it could kill people’ she didn’t speak to anyone but her beloved brother, Bailey, for almost half a decade. Her lack of verbal communication didn’t stop her love of language – far from it. Maya read continuously during her chapter of silence. She covered everything from literature penned by famous black authors, like W.E.B Du Bois, to William Shakespeare’s classics. And when she was twelve and a half, an educated black woman, Mrs Flowers (of Mrs Flowers: A Moment of Friendship) helped Maya find her voice again. Surviving a traumatic childhood was just the start of Maya’s magnificent accomplishments in life. At 16, she made history by becoming San Francisco’s first Dr Maya angelou 3
black and first female cable-car conductor, before giving birth to her son, Guy – all whilst studying! During his early life, she took on a number of jobs – ranging from hamburger chef to Calypso dancer. But it wasn’t long before she exchanged her dancing shoes for pen and paper and rekindled her love affair with the written word. After joining the Harlem Writers Guild, she met Martin Luther King who soon became a close friend and a catalyst for her civil rights activism. Along with her partner at the time, John Killens, Maya organised cabarets to raise funds for Martin Luther King’s Southern Christian Leadership Conference. She soon took a job there, devoting her time to fighting against inequality and injustice. But darkness descended again for Maya when Martin Luther King was shot on her birthday in 1968. She stopped celebrating her birthdays for years but battled for change for the rest of her life – not just for herself but for people struggling all around the world. Encouraged by a good friend, Maya channelled her experiences and emotions into her first book, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. To this day, it’s known as one of the most influential autobiographies of all time. Finding the bravery to document her struggles and survival paved the foundations for Maya’s legacy of inspiration. She went on to write six more autobiographies, inaugurate a president, become a doctor, and she never stopped fighting for freedom. 4 THe lITTle BooK oF Queer IConS
In fact, she was awarded the Presidential Medal for Freedom by Obama just four years before she died. Her most powerful qualities? Hope and courage. Maya never gave up. She bounced back. She encouraged others to believe in better and stood up for what’s right. In her very own words: you may encounter many defeats but you must never be defeated. A true survivor.
HER AWESOME ACHIEVEMENTS Î Organised key events during the Civil Rights Movement, along with Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. Î The first female poet to recite a poem for a US Presidential Inauguration. Î Received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civil honour in the US, from Barack Obama. Î Awarded honorary degrees from more than 50 universities. Î Won Pulitizer Prize for I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.

Follow the storage recommendations on packaged foods. The ‘best before’ date is intended as a guide for when the produce will taste best. The ‘use-by’ date on items such as fish, raw meat, cooked products and ready meals deserves close attention as it’s these foods which could cause stomach upsets or full-blown food poisoning if the use-by date is not respected. Think of the ‘best before’ as a quality guide and ‘use-by’ as a health safety check. Make sure that you also finish these products within the stated time from opening – for instance, once opened use within three days.
You will need pasta, a large saucepan, water, salt and a colander.
Wash at high temperatures (60ºC or above) to kill bacteria and keep whites brighter. Run the washing machine monthly on empty at 95ºC to maintain performance.
Prevention is better than cure! Stop blockages before they happen by adhering to a few basic rules: never put fats or anything other than liquid waste down the kitchen sink and keep long hair from clogging the plug holes of showers, baths and wash basins.
STORE FRESH FOOD
COOK PASTA 1
2
• Home-cooked foods and leftovers: Cool down, cover
and refrigerate.
• Meat: Store raw meat away from cooked foods and at the
bottom of the fridge to prevent blood from dripping onto other food, which can cause food poisoning. Ensure that cooked meat is properly covered and refrigerated.
• Fruit and vegetables: Store in the fridge if not using
straight away or you don’t wish to ripen them. Onions, potatoes and apples can be stored on a surface away from direct sunlight or in a cool, dark place, such as a drawer or cupboard. Tomatoes should never be refrigerated as they will lose their flavour.
• Eggs: No need to refrigerate. • Cooked rice: Refrigerate as soon as it’s cool – ideally within
1 hour – and eat within 24 hours, either cold from the fridge or reheated until the centre is piping hot. Never reheat rice more than once.
Shops sometimes display goods in chiller units because they are best served cold and to give them the appeal of fresh food. If in doubt, keep it in the fridge at home. 2

DO YOUR LAUNDRY
Fill the saucepan with cold water, put the lid on and bring the water to the boil. Remove the lid and add a tablespoon of salt. Return the water to a rolling boil, add the pasta and stir once to separate it.
UNBLOCK A DRAIN
Sort your dirty laundry into piles for separate washes:
Spoon out one piece when it is 1–2 minutes away from the suggested cooking time. Cut it in half to see if it is cooked through. A white and grainy centre means further cooking time is required. Continue to test once a minute until the pasta is done. For al dente pasta – with a little bit of bite – remove from the heat before it is completely soft. Have a colander ready in the sink, then drain the pasta into it. It is now ready to serve, or combine with sauce.
•
Whites for a hot temperature wash (bedding, towels, knickers, tea towels, dishcloths, flannels).
•
Coloured cottons suitable for a hot wash (as above).
•
Whites for a warm wash (shirts, T-shirts, skirts, shorts, jeans, trousers).
•
Coloureds for a warm/cool wash (as above).
•
Delicates for a cool/gentle wash (silk, lace, mesh, synthetic clothing).
•
Woollens and silk (jumpers, scarves, gloves). Wash these by hand unless you have a hand-wash/woollens or silk setting on your washing machine.
TOP TIPS
TOP TIPS
•
Choose a large pot or saucepan as pasta needs plenty of room to move around while cooking.
•
•
Allow 1 litre of water per 100-gram serving of pasta. Salt generously.
Colours will run on some clothes if they’re not washed at the correct temperature.
•
•
If combining pasta with sauce, heat the sauce before adding to the pasta unless it is an uncooked or oil-based sauce (such as garlic oil or pesto).
Wash similar colours together (i.e. light colours or dark colours).
•
If clothes are only lightly soiled, select the express wash function on your washing machine.
•
Serve pasta into deep, warm bowls to keep it hot for as long as possible.
•
Because of their absorbent nature, towels need less washing detergent than other items.

A plunger will remove blockages that occur within the first couple of metres of pipe below a plug hole. Place the plunger’s mouth over the plug hole, grasp the handle and plunge up and down until the suction releases the debris causing the problem. Rather than using a caustic cleaner for regular maintenance, pour a drinking cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by half a cup of vinegar. Leave this to fizz for 30 minutes before flushing it down with around two litres (about four pints) of hot water. Repeat as necessary. For outside drain blockages that don’t respond to the baking powder and vinegar remedy, you could try a few tablespoons of caustic soda. Put this down the drain then add some water to make it fizz and see if the debris rises to the top. Remove the waste matter using rubber gloves. If this doesn’t work, you may need to borrow or buy a set of drain rods, which screw together clockwise. Wearing protective gloves, poke the rods into the chamber of the drain and slowly rotate them as you push them in. Remember to rotate them clockwise so they don’t unscrew. After you’ve found the blockage and broken it up with the rods, flush the drain with water.

Who Can Find...?
The Longest Peeling
After any session of cutting up paper to make joined-up paper people or paper-and-pencil games, there will inevitably be bits of paper all over the place. So you issue a challenge: who can find the most pieces of paper? There’s a special prize for the winner! Go! Children are a mercenary lot and if there’s a bar of chocolate or a few bob in it they’ll work like Trojans. Just beware that if you have a very intelligent child they will realise that by tearing the paper into even smaller pieces they will end up with the most and probably make even more mess in the process.
Even when they’re on their own, few adults can resist the temptation to see if they can peel an apple or a potato in one go, thereby producing a length of peel as long as a large intestine. Making this into a competitive sport will keep the kids in quiet, tongue-between-the-teeth concentration for a few precious moments.
Of course this ‘no noise’ element will depend entirely on whether people can refrain from crying because they’ve lost, accusing other people of cheating or kicking the wall in frustration – but then we expect you grandparents to set a good example!
Guess How Much It Weighs
Pick-Up-Sticks
Amazing how a simple set of kitchen scales can provide endless hours of fun with a ‘guess the weight’ competition. What weighs more – an apple or a banana? How much will a pint of milk weigh? Just try to steer the conversation, though, when the kids want to progress to the bathroom scales to see how much Grandma and Granddad weigh!
The rapt concentration needed for this game should ensure it’s played mainly in silence assuming Grandma and Granddad can refrain from exclaiming ‘Oh botheration’ or similar when it all goes wrong.
Where Are Granny’s Glasses? The kids will imagine this is a game that Granddad has specially devised to amuse them and then to reward the winner with a special prize. Little do they know that Granddad himself has to play this game at least three or four times a day due to Granny’s forgetfulness. There is a similar game that can be played for the amusement of all called ‘Where are Granddad’s Car Keys?’ There are many other variations of this perennial favourite.
Playing With Bubbles Or in other words, washing up! Yes, you can sneakily get them to help with the washing up by frothing up lots of washing up liquid bubbles in the sink then getting them to find the various bits of dirty cutlery and crockery down in its depths.
Rules: drop a pile of sticks in the middle of the table. You could use matchsticks, wooden kitchen skewers, chopsticks or anything else stick-like. The first person attempts to remove one at a time without disturbing any of the others. If they free one they can continue, if not the next person tries. The person with the most sticks at the end is the winner.
Stone, Paper, Scissors Or rock, paper, scissors if you must follow our American cousins. Do we need to explain the rules? Of course not. If you have never played this you have not had a proper childhood.

The Little Book of Spells An Introduction to White Witchcraft
Astrid Carvel
ISBN: 978 1 78685 799 6 £6.99 148x105mm 128pp Paperback May 2019 Rights and Sales Territories: World
Discover the techniques for performing white witchcraft with this beginner’s guide to casting spells. From love potions using candle magic and rituals for attracting prosperity, to charm bags for courage and incantations for lasting happiness, there is a spell for every occasion.
Key Selling Points: • This book taps into the recent surge of interest in esoteric subjects and white witchcraft. #witches_of_instagram has 1.4 million posts. • Understand how to make the most of the natural world to improve your life with a wide range of rituals and spells for love, luck, good health and happiness.
THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE CASTING A SPELL Make sure your intentions are good – this is especially so when you are casting a love spell or a spell that will affect another person. If you are prone to crushes, for example, and you want your crush to take notice of you, be prepared for the attention, as you might change your mind and a spell of this nature is hard to undo. Consider the phase of the moon, as it’s important to perform the spell at the right time. For example, you don’t want to be casting a money spell on a waning moon as it might have the opposite effect. Believe in yourself! As with trying anything new in life, you’re bound to be a little hesitant when you start to perform spells and are likely to doubt your abilities. Believe that you can do it, and you will!
12
The Little Book of Spells_SAMPLE PAGES.indd 4-5
NEW BEGINNINGS SPELL This spell is best performed in the autumn, as it requires a copious quantity of dried leaves. It’s a nice one to do with a small group of friends or close family members and could become an annual ritual to celebrate autumn and the year to come.
WITCHY TIP If you want to invoke something (bring something to you), stir your potions clockwise. If you want to banish something (push it away) stir counter clockwise.
Collect a basket or large dish full of fallen leaves – they can be from any tree – and place it in the centre of your dining or coffee table. Assemble everyone around the table, then ask each person in turn to pick up a leaf and say out loud what they want to discard for the next year, before discarding the leaf on the ground. It could be a negative relationship, a bad habit, a health complaint, etc. Keep going round the table until the leaves are gone. Once finished, sweep up the leaves and compost them! Think of the things that you are letting go of breaking down into the earth, as the leaves decompose, and new positive things grow and flourish in their place.
Moon phase: waning Day of the week: Saturday – at any time of the day You will need: A large basket or dish Autumn leaves

This classic whisky and vermouth cocktail hails from late nineteenth-century New York. For a traditional Manhattan, choose a rye whisky; bourbon is an acceptable substitute but you’ll lose some of that spicy edge.
Don’t cry over spilt milk. at least it wasn’t whisky.
Ingredients • 75 ml whisky (rye) • 30 ml sweet vermouth • 2 dashes aromatic bitters • 1 Maraschino cherry Method Pour the whisky, vermouth and bitters into the icefilled shaker. Stir lightly and carefully, but well. Shaking will make the cocktail cloudy to the eye and oily to the taste. Strain the drink into a cocktail glass and garnish with the cherry.

gift of learning to meditate is the greatest gift you can give yourself in this lifetime.
The WHAT IS MEDITATION The word ‘meditation’ comes from the Latin meditari (to think, dwell on, exercise the mind) and mederi, to heal. At its simplest, it involves taking time out to sit still, away from distractions, and clear the mind of everyday thoughts. It allows us to take a break from ‘doing’ and to spend time simply ‘being’ instead, giving our minds a rest and a chance to recover from the rigours of everyday life. Meditation forms an integral part of many ancient spiritual practices, but it is as relevant to us today as it has ever been. The benefits are enormous: on the physical side, it lowers blood pressure and boosts the immune system, while on the emotional side, it helps us to combat stress. Setting aside time to meditate also allows us to nurture our spirituality.
MEDITATION FOR EVERYONE The good news is it doesn’t matter who you are, how old you are, what gender you are or what your nationality is, because meditation is for everyone. You don’t need to be religious, or to have a guru, and you don’t have to spend lots of time in an ashram to learn the art. Meditation requires little to no equipment or physical exertion and so can be a good fi t for those with a time or cash-strapped lifestyle. Meditation, like exercise, can trigger a release of endorphins, the brain chemical that makes you feel good. Granted, some people find it easier than others, and some take longer to ‘get the hang of it’ because like any skill, meditation requires practice to achieve satisfying results. However, anyone at all can do it and, with perseverance, will reap the benefits.

Salt, alum and copper sulphate are good crystalgrowing substances to experiment with. (Find alum at your local chemist and copper sulphate online.) Take a clean jar, fill it two-thirds full of hot water, add some of your substance and stir until it dissolves. Keep adding and stirring until no more of the substance will dissolve. Tie a piece of string or thread to the middle of a pencil and rest it on the rim of the jar, with the thread dipped into the solution. Leave undisturbed for a week and see the crystals build up on the thread. Add food colouring or ink for more colourful results!

decent-sized garden or area of a park. Players are split into two teams and each team has five minutes to hide their flag (a tea towel will do) on their designated half of the playing area. Each team should also choose a base area. You should be able to see a bit of the flag poking out from its hiding place and it should be easy enough to grab, so don’t bury it or tie it to anything. The simple part: Players should try their hardest to get hold of the other team’s flag – by hiding behind trees, crawling on their hands and knees, and generally being swift as anything – and bring it back to their base without being tagged by a member of the other team. If you do get caught, you get put in ‘prison’ (a designated patch of grass) but can be freed at the touch of one of your team members. Whoever gets back to base first with the other team’s flag and their team intact wins.

How to start: All you need for this one is a bit of space and a wall. Choose a player to be Mr Wolf. This player should stand facing the wall, while the others face in the same direction 20 paces away.
PLAY GLOW-IN-THE-DARK BOWLING You’ll need six glow sticks, six plastic water bottles (labels removed) nearly full of water, a ball such as a basketball or football, and something to keep score. Add a glow stick to each bottle (don’t forget to replace the tops), set up your ‘bowling pins’ in a triangle formation and away you go!
The simple part: Players take it in turns to ask Mr Wolf the time and take steps towards him according to his replies, i.e. 5 o’clock = five steps, 12 o’clock = 12 steps. Mr Wolf can, at any time of his choosing, announce it to be ‘dinner time!’ and turn to grab or chase the players, depending on how close to him they are. The first player to be caught then becomes Mr Wolf and the game continues.

Can you read my mind? The question every psychology student across the world will be asked at some point during their studies. Unfortunately, the answer is no; contrary to popular opinion, studying psychology does not enable you to literally ‘read’ the minds of others. Instead, it teaches you to assess and try to understand the somewhat complicated workings of the human mind and the peculiar and sometimes shocking behaviour of our complex species. Psychology is the scientific study of behaviour, cognition and emotion. It is commonly confused with psychiatry, which is a medical specialism which you must have a medical degree to practise – despite the similar names, they’re very different branches of science. Psychiatry only concerns mental disorders and illnesses, whereas psychology is a much broader study of the human mind and all its quirks.
This little book will give you an overview of how the mind works, through different psychologists, their perspectives and theories. It will also give you an insight into more clinical aspects, such as how the mind sometimes takes a wrong turn down a dark alley, and how therapies can be used to get it back on track. Developmental, biological and cognitive psychology will also make an appearance, along with an introduction to a few fascinating areas of applied psychology such as cyber and forensic psychology. Now, it would be impossible to fit the entirety of psychological history into this pocket-sized book, but I can give you a little taster, in the hope that this will further spark your interest in the weird and wonderful science that is psychology. And who knows, you might actually learn something…
