Stress happens when we feel under pressure in the present moment. (It’s usually a response to a particular situation, such as moving house or changing job.) Anxiety is the worry you feel when you’re not specifically ‘under threat’; it involves concerns about the future or dwelling on the past. (The panicky feeling you experience in an exam is stress, but your worrying thoughts about what might happen in the future if you fail, are anxiety.)
Stress can show itself in a whole range of different ways – from loss of confidence and sleep problems to anger, depression, poor concentration and mood swings. People can experience physical symptoms too, such as dizziness, nausea, sweating or shaking. All of these reactions are our body’s attempts to deal with mental or physical strain, but we aren’t designed to experience them long-term, and that’s when stress can start to affect your health. You may be suffering from stress on an emotional or physical level without realizing it, so take a moment to pause and see if you recognize any of these symptoms. If you do, it’s time to take action and tackle your stress.
Depression – persistent feelings of low mood – can be part and parcel of stress-related conditions. Whether you’re stressed, anxious or depressed, making time to take positive action is the most important step you can take, so you’re already on the right track.

INSTRUCTIONS:
MISSION 1.2
HUNT FOR MINI-BEASTS
1
Make sure everyone knows that when they have permission to handle any of the mini-beasts, they must be very gentle and must place them back exactly where they found them. If you find a mini-beast that could bite or sting, explain to your troopers what it is, and why they shouldn’t touch it.
SECTION 1: EXPLORE
NOTE Use the mini-beast ‘spot it’ sheet on p.38–39 to help record what your troopers find.
2 Adopt quiet ‘David Attenborough’ tones and encourage the troopers
to do the same. This will have no effect on the bugs whatsoever, but will avoid startling other kinds of wildlife, and will add to the anticipation.
Mission brief
section 1:
EXPLORE
● Ground: gardens and a variety of other habitats, such as parks, woods and playing fields – wherever mini-beasts roam. ● Situation: any weather or season. It will affect the mini-beasts you find. ● Mission: to track and identify – but not capture – mini-beasts. ● Skills: observation, recognition, nature appreciation
KIT LIST: ● A camera, if you have one, so your troopers can continue studying their small game at base camp later. ● Paper and pencil for the artistic troopers (ideally with something to lean on, such as a clipboard). ● Spotting sheet – in addition to the ‘spot it’ pages in this section, you can find great downloadable spotting sheets at www. wildlifewatch.org.uk/spotting-sheets.

● In or near any kind of shelter, including cracks in tree bark, piles of deadwood or leaves. ● In long grass.
6 Challenge the misconceptions about mini-beasts. Bees aren’t just stinging
machines, they’re arch pollinators and without them many plants and crops (including the ones we eat) would die. Flies can be a pain but they are busy workers in the garden, pollinating, helping to dispose of decaying waste and serving as a protein-rich meal for birds, frogs, spiders and other insects. Worms aren’t slimy mini-snakes, they’re ‘nature’s ploughs’ turning waste into nutrient-rich soil.
● Binoculars if you have them, they are not strictly necessary for small game but will be popular nonetheless.
7 Look for tracks. Wet mud and snow provide great opportunities to find
animal tracks.
● Insect repellent if your garden is a haven for swarms of biting insects.
8 Take photographs and draw pictures. This will help you identify mini-
beasts and their tracks later on.
● If you’re away from base camp, wipes or hand sanitisers to clean hands after handling mini-beasts. 2

Your face is amazing. Just think of all the facial expressions you can make – and that’s because you have 43 muscles in your face! Let’s exercise those muscles by trying some of these expressions – and make sure your grown-up does them too!
Sometimes we feel sad about ourselves because we feel we’ve done something bad or made a mistake and these sad feelings can hang around like a bad smell! Everyone makes mistakes – even grown-ups – and rather than feeling regret or wishing you could jump in a time machine and go back and do things differently there is a much better way of looking at mistakes. The designer of this book has made some messy splodges on this spread. Can you make something new out of them?

Even if you don’t feel like smiling, turning up the corners of your mouth will boost your mood and trick your brain into feeling happier. Scientists have discovered that the happy feelings you experience when you smile can reduce how much stress you feel and even help you to live longer!

pressed flower wall art
What makes a house a home There’s no place like home. It’s where we come to relax at the end of a busy day. It’s the place where we shelter and where we recharge. Home is the place where we feel safest and, most importantly, it should be where we feel happy. Twenty-twenty marked a turning point for people across the world. With the normal pattern of our lives disrupted, the pandemic shed light on the things in life that really
matter. As such, our relationship towards our homes has shifted; “home” is not merely a base where we come to eat and sleep – it’s a part of who we are and it a has a huge effect on our mental health, our wellbeing and our outlook on life. For many people, home is now also a workplace, and, as we find our way towards a new normal, we are spending more time indoors than we do outside – so it’s more important than ever to
ensure that the place we live is somewhere that brings us joy and comfort. This book will show you how to bring out the best in your home. Wherever you live and whatever your budget, there are myriad ways to make your house into a haven that fosters happiness and mental wellbeing. Find tips on bringing the outside in and making the most of the seasons, discover ways to create your own private space
for creativity and calm, enjoy recipes for comfort food, indoor picnics and coffee-shop favourites, and find solace in the beautiful quotes and poetry you’ll find within. Most of all, settle down into this book to be soothed, refreshed, and inspired to truly make your house into your home.
A dried flower can be used in many ways – in a journal or scrapbook, as a decoration to display in your home or as an addition to candles or soaps, to name but a few. This step-bystep guide shows you how to make a simple piece of art to hang on your wall so that you can be reminded of the outdoors every time you look at it. Although these instructions use only one flower, your design is completely up to you – be minimal or fill the frame with colours and shapes that bring you happy feelings and memories.
Method
Choose a flower to press. Make sure that the plant is healthy and not wilted or damaged. Remove any dirt from the stem (but keep petals dry) then trim the stem so the flower will fit inside your frame. Choose a book that it the same length or longer than your flower. Cut two pieces of newspaper the same size as the book. Arrange the flower on one piece of newspaper, place it inside the book, then place the other piece of newspaper on top and shut the book gently.
You will need A flower (or leaf)
Several heavy books 2 sheets of newspaper Picture frame Paint brush White card that fits into your frame
Stack more books on top of the flower book so that the flower is being pressed by an even weight, and leave the flower to dry for 3–4 weeks. Once this time has passed, open the book and remove the flower from the newspaper. Be careful: the petals can be incredibly thin and delicate. Gently apply PVA glue to the back of your flower with a paintbrush and place it on the white card. Wait a few minutes for the glue to dry before placing the card in the frame. Then, hang up your creation and admire it! 2

The Art of Simple Living Practical Steps to Slowing Down, Finding Peace and Enjoying a Wholesome Life
Sam Lacey
ISBN: 978 1 78783 999 1 £8.99 154x111mm 160pp Hardback August 2021 Rights and Sales Territories: World
It’s time to experience the joys of simple living With help on how to declutter your home, practise mindfulness and make your mealtimes, free time and relationships more fulfilling, the advice and tips in this book will guide you towards a simpler life filled with joy, laughter and love. Sam Lacey has been an editor, proofreader and writer for more than 20 years. Her hobbies include jigsaws, drinking good coffee (with cake) and running.
Key Selling Points: • This beautifully designed book will help the reader simplify all areas of their life, from in the house to out and about. • A similar Summersdale book, All You Need Is Less (ISBN: 9781786857668), has sold over 20,000 copies. Kitchen Enjoy the moment
Simply clearing the work surfaces of any
utensils and equipment at the end of each day equals instant space, whatever size kitchen you have. If you have enough drawers, store equipment in them rather than in pots on the work surface and stow away washing-up brushes and cloths under the sink. And, of course, everyone has that end-of-worktop area where a pile of junk mail and bills accumulates; aim to spend a few minutes each day dealing with it instead of letting it sit there gathering dust and crumbs. To avoid bills gathering on work surfaces at all, you could change to paperless billing.
Do you ever find yourself clock-watching, wishing the day away? We all do it. Then at the end of the year, we wonder where the time has gone. One day, we will look back and realize that those small moments – our kids holding our hands on the walk to school, getting soaked in a downpour at a festival, family celebrations with everyone together – are the things we will remember the most. If you have children, for example, they can come out with some spectacular phrases and nuggets of wisdom. So you don’t forget them in years to come, jot them down on a piece of paper and keep them safe in a jar; they’ll make great conversation starters at their 21st birthday party! Pay attention to the small things every day.

One positive thought every morning can set the tone for the rest of the day. Fill in your positive intention for each day below. Monday Focus on a growth mindset
Give yourself a goal or intention for the day before getting up
Life isn’t a pass or fail exercise. Things are constantly changing, shifting and evolving so it’s important that our mindsets reflect this.
It could be something as simple as “stay calm at work” or “be more productive” or “enjoy working with my colleagues”, but don’t make it an actual “thing” to do as this could cause anxiety. The Dalai Lama once said, “Every day, think as you wake up: today I am fortunate to be alive, I have a precious human life, I am not going to waste it.” Hold this thought to remind yourself that every day is special and cannot be lived again.
Fixed mindsets tend to see things as black and white, perfect or terrible. Growth mindsets, on the other hand, are more flexible. They put the focus on trying and learning rather than winning or losing. Take driving a car for instance: you don’t drive perfectly the first time you get behind the wheel; you learn from mistakes and build up your ability. Life is no different – it’s a constant learning journey – so focus on how you grow and improve along the way, not just the destination.

PART 1:
Self-esteem noun
WHAT IS SELFESTEEM?
Confidence in one’s own worth or abilities; self-respect.
Self-esteem is all about how you feel about yourself. It can be high (like when you feel super confident and really proud of yourself)… or low (like when you feel like you’ve failed and you’re the worst person in the entire universe), or somewhere in-between. Humans are complicated, so self-esteem develops differently for everyone. Lots of things can influence your self-esteem (more on that later) and it can go up and down depending on what you’re doing, who you’re with or what’s going on in your body.
I MATTER.
I matter equally. NOT “IF ONLY”.
Not “as long as”. I MATTER EQUALLY.

What do teens worry about? All teens feel anxiety… even if they act tough and confident! Here are some of the most common things teenagers today feel anxious about: Ì School work Ì Exams Ì Friendships Ì Pressure to grow up Ì How they look Ì Family Ì The future Ì Comparison with peers and celebrities Ì Social media Do any of these things make you feel anxious? You can add your own if you like!
Your body is always sending you all sorts of signals. Our senses pick up way more than we are consciously aware of, which is why we often get a “gut feeling” that turns out to be correct. Our bodies tell us when we’re hungry, tired, thirsty, uncomfortable… when it comes to anxiety, our body is telling us there’s something threatening our safety. It’s not always right, of course, but researchers have found that listening to and naming the feelings and sensations in our bodies helps to calm the nervous system.
SCARED
is what you’re
Try doing a body scan right now. Start from the top of your head and see what you feel in each part of your body. Is there pain, tightness, warmth anywhere? Perhaps parts of you feel heavy, or light? Use words, colours or patterns (whatever feels right!) on this outline to show how it feels in your body right now.
Also, anxiety can get worse when we’re hungry or tired, so take a moment to listen to your body. It might tell you that you’re feeling extra panicky because you’re in need of a nap and a sandwich.

Unconscious Bias Everything You Need to Know About Our Hidden Prejudices
Annie Burdick
ISBN: 978 1 78783 973 1 £7.99 148x105mm 144pp Paperback March 2021 Rights and Sales Territories: World
Unconscious bias affects us all. Acting as your mentor and guide, this book will take you through the most common forms of prejudice, including gender, race, size, age and sexuality. It also explores the psychology behind our biases and provides tips and exercises to help you combat implicit judgements. Annie Burdick is a writer, editor and community inclusion specialist for disabled adults. She lives in Oregon with her partner and rescue dog. She has written for Eater, The Spruce, O.School, Llewellyn’s Herbal Almanac, and more.
Key Selling Point: • More companies are recognizing the need for unconscious bias training in their workforce. This book is a handy alternative or supplement to a training course.
Introduction We live in a connected world. Our lives have become so connected that it is nearly impossible to go through life without interacting with other people, on a regular basis no less. Some days we pass by or come in contact with dozens if not hundreds of other people. Other days we stay home and text our friends and family, or kill time looking through social media, seeing what other people have to say. Our connectedness offers us so much. It’s a way to learn from other people and develop our own place in the world. It’s a way to build a life, wealth, success, and relationships. It is the reason we carry on; if we lose our connection to other humans, it becomes hard to see the purpose in life. So why do we have bias? It is a part of human life, just as much as the connectedness, yet it is a piece that draws us apart. Bias is woven into the fabric of our interactions and conversations, just as much as it is instilled deep in our brains and reactions. We can’t always see it. Sometimes we choose not to. Nonetheless, it is there, altering and affecting the interactions that people have with each other, around the world, every day. Bias comes in many forms. It takes on other names and transforms into similar enemies, things like prejudice, discrimination, and injustice. This book will provide a basic introduction to these concepts, and the way that bias appears in our world. It also aims to offer actionable
Society and Culture guidance and support to help you conquer biases of your own. Even as we become more connected as a planet, negativity and discrimination does not fade away as it seems it should. And it won’t go away on its own. Each of us as individuals has the power to acknowledge our bias, rather than ignore it. We each have the power to learn about the impact of bias in our world. We have the power to actively undo our unconscious biases and live our lives with empathy and acceptance. This book is here to teach you why that power is important, and how to claim it.

INTRODUCTION 3

Society surrounds you every day and has an effect on the messages your brain receives and interprets, whether or not you’re actively engaging in it. Think of this first: does anything about our culture make you feel negatively about an aspect of yourself? Perhaps you see messages in the way people treat beauty, weight, age, sexuality, wealth, or relationship status, and they make you feel bad about the way you look or live your life or any number of other things. This is society subtly enacting its bias upon your perceptions of yourself! Now think of the ways those societal and cultural messages may affect how you feel bias toward others. Perhaps you see someone in a particular profession and find yourself surprised that someone of their gender, age, sexuality, or race would have that job. Maybe you think critically of someone who looks “unhealthy,” without knowing anything about their situation. You may make assumptions about someone who is very wealthy or poor, based on things our society says about those statuses. So often these biases and many others have roots and connections to our cultural expectations

Stereotype Threat Strange as it may sound, you can even have biases against groups that you belong to. One version of this, most often arising in the education system, is called stereotype threat. This often comes into play early in life in elementary education, and then can continue to affect people later in college. Essentially stereotype threat refers to an issue in which people find themselves at risk of aligning with harmful biases about their social group, most often their race or gender, though not exclusively. It was first noted and studied in testing situations in 1995 with young students, who, when reminded of harmful stereotypes about their race or gender, performed worse on tests, because the biases were planted more firmly in their heads and affected their self-perceptions. They started to believe the negative statements made about them and their social groups—for instance, that Black students don’t do as well on tests or that female students couldn’t excel at math or sciences. However, when the biases weren’t emphasized or reminded to them, they did just as well as the other students. Bias is powerful, even to ourselves.

ACE SPECTRUM
ABROSEXUAL Someone whose sexual orientation is not fixed, and changes often. It would not be accurate to say, for example, that an abrosexual person is gay one day and bisexual the next, as their sexual identity remains abrosexual. Instead, they would (for example) experience sexual attraction to people of the same gender as them one day and to people of other genders the next.
ACE
The range of asexual identities. Because there isn’t just one way to be asexual – to not feel and/ or have never felt sexual attraction – it’s useful to think of all sexuality as a ruler and asexuality as a set of points on that scale. For example, one person may rarely feel sexual attraction and only sometimes have sex, and identify as asexual. Another person may have never felt sexual attraction and identify as asexual. This may change over their lifetime, or remain the same. (See P.106 for spectrum.)
AFFIRM A positive confirmation that what has been said has been heard and believed. Affirmation is a word that has existing uses outside of the LGBTQ+ community but carries extra weight within the community. It not only signals hearing and understanding, but also that the words are welcome and accepted as truth. Many people within minority groups have experienced doubt and invalidation when sharing their stories. For example, ‘love the sinner, hate the sin’ or ‘are you sure you can’t just not be this way?’ Half-acceptance like this hurts, so the act of affirmation is incredibly powerful.
ACEFLUX/AROFLUX

Say No to Racism Tips and Advice on How to Be Anti-Racist
Rasha Barrage
ISBN: 978 1 78783 969 4 £6.99 148x105mm 128pp Paperback June 2021 Rights and Sales Territories: World
Want to take an active role in stamping out racism but don’t know how best to channel your energy? Then this book is for you. With a raft of practical tips, this pocket-sized guide will help you to recognize racism in all its forms, address unconscious bias, be a true ally and embrace anti-racism. Rasha Barrage was born in Iraq and grew up in Merseyside in the north-west of England. After studying law at Oxford University and completing a master’s at the University of Toronto, she trained and worked as a lawyer for eight years. She lives in London with her husband and three young children.
Key Selling Point: • The book’s structure breaks down this large topic into bite-sized advice and actionable tips. WHAT IS RACISM?
SAY NO TO RACISM
What is racism? The first step to eliminating racism is to understand what racism is. While you know that you want to challenge racism, you might be less certain about how to do so. That is because defining racism is actually much more complicated than it first seems. What exactly is racism? How do you recognize it? This chapter invites you to put aside what you think you know about racism and to open your mind open your mind to the myriad ways, past and present, that it can occur’. By creating a clear definition of it in your mind, you can then become aware of its various forms and work towards addressing it.
When is racism a problem?
Microaggressions
The word ‘race’ is around 500 years old, used originally in the English language as a marker of kinship or group affiliation. It meant that you were a member of a particular household, group or that you shared a common ancestor. ‘Race’ was redefined as being related to physical attributes in the 17th Century to justify forms of exploitation or domination, such as the slave trade and colonization. Common aesthetic differences between Anglo-Saxons and Africans were rationalised as meaning a ‘fundamental difference’ that validated a hierarchy. Today, it is a social marker of a person’s identity, typically based on their skin colour, country of origin, ethnicity, religion, culture or language.
Racism is always a problem, for all members of society. Just as racism comes in many forms, so do its harms. The following is a list of some of the most devastating consequences of racism for those experiencing it directly:
Microaggressions are brief and commonplace altercations in language, behaviour or the environment, that make a person aware of being judged on the basis of their race. These experiences are very common to the recipient, but the aggressor is completely ignorant of its effect and believes it to be socially acceptable. Some examples you may have experienced:

producing roots make it an extremely useful plant for crop rotation.
FOLK LORE: More often than not having three leaves clover has always been associated with the holy trinity, giving it the ability to keep away evil spirits. Witches become more powerful if they manage to find a five-leafed clover and maidens hope to find a two-leafed clover as they will be able to see their future spouse. Medieval
FOLK MEDICINE: Pliny the Elder recommended red clover to treat bladder stones and dropsy (swellings under the skin) and also as a diuretic, as well as for cleansing the liver and improving the circulation. Honey infused with red clover flowers was considered to be an effective treatment for coughs, bronchitis, asthma and whooping cough. The flowers can be rubbed onto insect bites and stings for instant relief from itching. Bathing irritated skin in a solution of red clover can give relief from eczema and psoriasis, help soothe itchy scalps and speed up the healing of wounds. OTHER COMMON USES: More recently, red clover has been used by menopausal women to help treat hot flushes and night sweats, and balance hormones.

Seventy out of the 90 main crops grown for human consumption are dependent on bee pollination and an astonishing one third of the food we eat – one forkful in three – has been pollinated by bees and other creatures. Some crops – blueberries and almonds, for example – rely almost entirely on bees to bear fruit. Even plants that can self-pollinate (such as strawberries) have been shown to yield bigger fruit that stay fresher for longer for consumers. If we lost bees as pollinators, supermarkets would only be able to provide half of the fruits and vegetables that are currently commonly available, and the long-term effect could well be famine and malnutrition.
To the bee, a flower is the fountain of life, and to the flower the bee is a messenger of love.
Foods we’d lose if bees went extinct:
3
Top pollinators Around 90 per cent of the world’s wildflower species rely on pollination by animals, rather than using the wind or water to spread their seeds. Although bees aren’t the only creatures doing the work – butterflies, wasps, beetles, and even some birds and bats help out – they are nature’s prime pollinators. This is because they’re so well adapted to carry pollen, and because they’re completely dependent on nectar and pollen for survival, and must work hard to get enough. Honeybees, for example, visit up to 100 flowers every time they leave the hive and may do this 15 or more times a day.
u
Because of this, bees have an absolutely crucial role in agriculture – pollinating many of our major crops as well as fruit, vegetables and even plants used as feed for cattle. It’s estimated that bees contribute over $70 billion a year to the world economy, including £500 million a year to UK agriculture, while the work of honeybees alone is worth over $15 billion to the US economy.

Steve Silk
ISBN: 978 1 80007 049 3 £9.99 198x129mm 256pp Paperback July 2021 Rights and Sales Territories: World
Travelling by bike at a stately 14 mph, Steve Silk heads north, searching out milestones and memories, coaching inns and coffee shops. The Great North Road is a journey as satisfying for the armchair traveller as the long-distance cyclist. Enriched with history, humour and insight, it’s a tribute to Britain and the endless appeal of the open road. Steve Silk is a journalist working for BBC Look East in Norwich. He’s now more comfortable on an oldfashioned touring bike with a pannier full of flapjack and obsolete maps.
Key Selling Points: • Published to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the abolition of the Great North Road (which was replaced by the A1 in 1921). • Classic travel writing at its finest: The Great North Road weaves together the fascinating history of this ancient highway, stunning descriptions of the British countryside and the practicalities of life on two wheels. • Will appeal equally to avid cyclists and bikepackers, armchair travellers and fans of British history and nature writing. • Follows an 11-day journey that would be achievable for most cyclists in their annual leave, perhaps inspiring a challenge of their own.

Knowing your purpose, or your “why”, has the power to transform your life – and this book will help you to discover yours. From reflecting on your past to visualizing your future, the tips and advice in these pages will guide you towards your true calling, and a deeper sense of contentment and happiness. Joanne Mallon is one of the UK’s most experienced life and career coaches. The author of five books, Joanne also writes the popular healthy lifestyle blog Opposable Thumbs. Originally from Belfast, Joanne lives with her family in Brighton and can also be found on Twitter and Instagram @joannemallon.
Key Selling Point: • This book will appeal to anyone who wants to try a new direction, or consider how to get the most out of their life.
– Chapter 1 –
Introduction Having a clear sense of why you do what you do will transform your life. Think of your why as your life’s purpose; the fuel in your engine. It’s not the things you want to do or achieve – it’s the reason why you want them in the first place. It’s not the goal you’re aiming for, it’s the reason you get out of bed in the morning. Studies have shown that people with a clear sense of purpose are healthier, live longer and sleep better at night. You owe it to yourself, and to everyone you love, to find your why. This book contains tips, inspiration and pointers to help you work out what your unique purpose is and how you can start to live your life more in tune with it. Each chapter builds on the previous one to help you create an action plan. This will give you a clear sense of what your why is and how you can use it to steer your future life. Grab a notebook and pen as we start on the exciting journey of finding your why.
t Wihsaa Wh?
T here’s no greater gif t than to honor your life’s calling. It’s why you were born. And how you become most truly alive.
FINDING YOUR WHY IS GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH A sense of meaning can and will boost your physical health and improve your longevity. Repeated studies all around the world have found that people live longer and in better health if they have a sense of purpose in their life. This research tells us that finding your why will improve your wellbeing, and lead to fewer strokes and heart attacks, better sleep, and a lower risk of dementia and disabilities. Happiness and health have long been linked together, and many studies have backed up this assumption. Equally, much research has found that stress has a negative effect on our physical and mental health. Knowing your purpose means you are more centred and less stressed, and therefore less likely to be a victim to the effects of stress. So think of this as essential work with tangible benefits.

The Moon Almanac A Month-by-Month Guide to the Lunar Year
Judith Hurrell
ISBN: 978 1 78783 991 5 £9.99 182x116mm 160pp Hardback August 2021 Rights and Sales Territories: World
Navigate the rhythms of the night sky with this evocative collection of poetry, prose and precious wisdom. Illuminating the moon’s influence on the natural world and its depiction in folklore and the arts, this guide will open your eyes to the wonders of our brightest celestial neighbour. Judith Hurrell is a freelance writer who lives in Buckinghamshire. Follow her on Twitter @JudeHurrell.
Key Selling Points: • A beautifully designed, month-by-month guide to the lunar calendar. • The perfect gift for amateur or seasoned moon-gazers. • Will appeal to those who liked The Little Book of Astrology (ISBN: 9781849539746), which has sold over 25,000 copies. This “Wolf Moon” – so-called by Europeans, Wiccans and Native Americans – takes its name from the lupine howling heard during midwinter. Native Americans had a healthy sense of respect (rather than fear) for wolves. Traditional wisdom said the wolves were howling in hunger. However, evidence suggests wolves are more likely to howl to define their territory, locate pack members, and gather for hunting.
Chapter 1:
In China, January’s Moon is called the “Holiday Moon”. Chinese New Year often falls in January, although the date varies according to the Chinese lunar calendar. This high point in the year, also known as the Spring Festival or Lunar New Year, is the grandest festival in China. Festivities begin on the New Moon and continue for fifteen days, culminating on the Full Moon with a dazzling lantern festival.
When the Moon is waxing, its crescent tips always point away from sunset. Very young waxing crescent Moons hover just above the Western horizon at twilight. When the moon is waning, at around twenty-three days into its cycle, it appears crescent-like again for five days. During this phase, the old Moon rises in the dawn twilight of the eastern sky with its tips pointing towards sunrise.
Celtic traditions call January’s Moon the “Quiet Moon”, due to the quiet Winter landscape that was often cloaked in snow.
Have a super start to the year on the 2nd of January 2022, with the Super New Moon. The Full Moon will appear on the 17th of January 2022. Small but mighty: in 2023, the Full Moon on the 6th of January will be a Micro Full Moon. The New Moon rising on the 22nd of January will be a Super New Moon.
FOL KLOR E AND SUPER ST IT ION An old West Sussex superstition held that a New Moon was a good time for girls to visualize their future husband. Curious girls were advised to sit across a gate or stile and look at the first New Moon that rose after New Year’s Day. They were to go alone and in secret, chanting:
In the first quarter or last quarter of a Moon’s cycle, only a slither of the Moon is illuminated by the Sun. This creates a view of crescent Moon from Earth.
Other cultures have referred to January’s Moon as the “Old Moon”. “Old Fellow” was once a common nickname for Winter.
January’s Moon
WH AT IS A C R ESC ENT M OON? January is an excellent time to spot a young crescent Moon. At this time of year, the path of the Moon tracks vertically upwards from the sunset point. During the rest of the year, the crescent Moon traces the horizon on a leftward slant, making it more challenging to spot due to hazy horizons. Crescent Moons can be almost impossible to see during Autumn.
Crescent Moons always hang low in the sky and are confined to dawn or dusk; they’re never visible in complete darkness.
Pagan traditions call January’s Moon the “Ice Moon”.
The orientation of the crescent depends on the time of day, the season, and the viewer’s location. In the Northern hemisphere from January until March, the Moon can appear as a benevolent smile during the evening twilight.
In New Guinea, they call January’s Moon the “Rainbow Fish Moon”. In the Southern Hemisphere, January’s Moon is called the “Hay Moon”, the “Buck Moon”, the “Thunder Moon”, the “Mead Moon”, the “Grain Moon”, the “Sturgeon Moon”, the “Red Moon”, the “Wyrt Moon” and the “Corn Moon”.
All hail to thee, Moon, all hail to thee I pray thee, good Moon, revel to me This night who my husband must be. It was believed that the face of the girl’s future husband would come to her in a dream that night. According to German folklore, wood should not be chopped during the “evil crescent” (the increasing Moon). Firewood felled during this Moon phase would not stay alight long. In some countries, folklore suggests a halo around the Moon means bad weather is coming. The Scottish have a saying: “clear Moon, frost soon.” The Cornish have a saying: “a fog and a small Moon brings an easterly wind soon.”
In South Africa, it’s called the “Thunder Moon”.

It’s a rumour you most likely remember from your school days, and self-consciousness around smell is something most vagina-owners experience at some point. Indeed, a trip to your local pharmacy will present you with a host of products designed to neutralise the vaginal “odour” and promise a wealth of alternative scents: flowers, honey, cocoa. Goop queen Gwyneth Paltrow hit headlines in 2019 for a rather unusual addition to her wellness store, a candle named “This Smells Like My Vagina” with notes of geranium, citrus and rose.
If your vagina does smell like fish, or else takes on a strong scent that is unusual for you, it’s most likely the sign of a common infection such as bacterial vaginosis, which can be cleared up easily with a quick trip to your doctor. The reason for this shared scent is that both bacterial vaginosis and decomposing fish involve the chemical compound trimethylamine, responsible for the odour.
Contrary to the fishy myth and the vagina-scenting industry that has popped up around it, healthy vaginas simply smell of… well… vagina. Each vagina-owner has their own unique scent, and only you can know what “normal” means for you. Many describe their smell as musky, tangy, coppery or even reminiscent

A History of Vaginas
Mythbuster
Whether you sport a full bush, trim it, strim it into a perfect landing strip or wax everything off, there’s no right or wrong way to style your pubic hair. In a 2016 survey performed by JAMA Dermatology, most of the women questioned claimed that they removed pubic hair in order to maintain hygiene, but there’s no scientific evidence that shows that a hairless vagina is a cleaner vagina. A full bush of pubic hair offers a barrier between the vagina and dirt or infection and so is actually the safest way to style your vagina. If you choose to remove hair, be sure to follow the advice that accompanies your chosen method, particularly gently exfoliating the area where hair has been removed to avoid painful ingrowns. Whatever look you prefer—all-off Hollywood style, short and stubbly or shaped into a lightning bolt—what’s important is making a choice that you’re comfortable with and leaves you feeling sexy and confident.

Trimming the Toesies
3. Line the scissors up to the apex of the curve of the nail, to avoid the quick.
Too-sharp cat claws can hinder your kitty, causing them to get (adorably) stuck to chairs, carpets, blankets, themselves… the list goes on. Although a disgruntled face looks cute on a cat, you don’t want your pet to be in regular distress. And, unless you are into a particularly shabby chic, you don’t want all your furniture to be in distress either. Some cats reliably dull their claws themselves, through scratching on posts and trees. Other cats let theirs grow long enough that they could get a lovely shellac down the nail parlour. If you feel your cat is keeping their claw problem in check by themselves that’s fine. Otherwise, here’s a few tips on how to trim your kitty’s claws.
What to use Buy special nail scissors at your local pet store or vet’s. Cat’s claws are not like human nails – they contain the ‘quick’, which includes blood vessels and nerves. Cut too high and your cat will bleed. However, accidents do happen and the blade of cat nail scissors includes a little pincer design, which you can use to staunch the flow.
How to do it 1. Hold your cat firmly to your body, so it feels secure. 2. Gently pinch your cat’s paw between your thumb and forefinger, to push your cat’s claws out of their retracted position.
The Cat Mum Handbook
4. Quickly and efficiently cut the nail and move on to the next. 5. Ideally, to cause your pet the least amount of stress you would complete the grooming session in one go. However, cats are gonna cat. If either of you are getting agitated, walk away, let your cat (or yourself) calm down and return when you’re both in a better mood.
Oh no! You accidentally brought a strange dog home from the vets instead of your beloved cat. You’d better switch them back using this word ladder:
When to do it Some cats don’t mind a little attention to their paws, others are highly sensitive to being touched on the beans. If your cat is the high-strung sort then consider trimming their claws while they are sleepy or, better yet, asleep. Take your clues from your cat and don’t start wielding the nail scissors when they are agitated, play-fighting, searching for food or eager to go outside – they may communicate their displeasure with those too-sharp claws. If your cat just doesn’t agree with you about getting its claws cut, don’t worry. Vets will trim your cats claws during their checkup. Alternatively, many pet grooming services offer nail trimming by experienced groomers. New cat mums may even choose to have their cat’s claws trimmed by a professional the first couple of times while they watch and learn.

Always ensure that your dog’s vaccinations are up to date. All dogs should have an annual booster against diseases such as distemper, canine parvovirus and hepatitis. Be sure to log and keep safe evidence of shots, as some kennels will insist on seeing a vaccination record before they will accept your dog. If you want pooch to be a high flier, you will need an up-to-date health record to apply for a doggo passport.

Nail varnish is the answer, but make sure it’s clear nail varnish. Painting a thin layer of it on to the chip – inside and out – will reinforce it and give you some peace of mind. Tomato soup Method: First take the tin of soup and open it with a tin opener. Pour the soup into a saucepan and turn up the heat on the stove. You can stir the soup with a wooden spoon if you wish.
What you will need:
A tin of tomato soup A tin opener
First, take the two slices of bread and put them side-by-side on a chopping board. Hopefully the bread will already be sliced but if you’ve accidentally bought a fresh unsliced loaf then you’ll need to get a bread knife and slice it yourself like you’re making a sandwich in the days of yore or something.
I look so futuristic these days I’d be better suited on the Starship Enterprise rather than between your dying spider plant and the bread bin.
What you will need:
Two slices of bread A slice of cheese (maybe two) Butter or margarine
3
4 29/10/2019 11:04
You may want a piece of bread to go with it because soup is unremittingly dull.
Beans on toast Method: First take the two slices of bread and put them in a toaster - one slot each. Whilst your bread is toasting, open the tin of beans with a tin opener if you haven’t already and pour them into a saucepan.
Butter the slices of bread, or if you have margarine, margarine the slices of bread. Make sure to cover every area of the bread. Take the sliced cheese and place it on one slice of bread.
ANSWERS:

Then take the other slice of bread (the slice that has no cheese on it) and put it on top of the slice of bread that does have cheese on it. This is basically your cheese sandwich. You are quite welcome to cut it down the middle or diagonally if you’re cultured but personally I like to bite into the whole thing. Oh and if you’re in company, remember to use a plate.
What you will need:
A tin of beans (opened) Sliced bread Butter or margarine
Heat the beans and stir occasionally with a wooden spoon. Alternatively you could microwave them in a microwavable tub but would take some of the cooking element out of this recipe. You want to feel you’ve achieved something after all. Take the toast out of the toaster and start buttering (or margarining) both slices. Then pour the hot beans out of the saucepan directly onto the toast. Voilà. Beans on toast. That’s virtually a meal so you should be proud of yourself.

Bedding should be washed at least once per week and thoroughly dried before being used again. If you have the option of drying your sheets outside, clean bedding can become one of life’s little luxuries – fresh-scented and cool on the skin, it’s perfect for helping you get comfortable and drift off.

De-clutter” It’s hard to relax when you’re surrounded by clutter. Not having to think about, or indeed climb over, things in your way in the bedroom takes away one of your potential stressors. Start by making sure clean clothes are put away in your wardrobe or drawers and that dirty ones are in the laundry basket. Then think about what you have out on your bedside – what do you need, and what do you not need? Any non-essential items can be put away. Keep the floor clear of any potential trip hazards, and take anything that doesn’t belong in the bedroom out.

Say No to Alcohol Simple Tips to Help You Cut Down or Quit Drinking
Anna Barnes
ISBN: 978 1 80007 149 0 £6.99 148x105mm 128pp Paperback December 2021 Rights and Sales Territories: World
It’s time to break up with booze There’s life beyond alcohol. Drinking less or stopping completely can revitalize your world, from health and mood to money and relationships. It may seem tricky if drinking is currently your go-to for stress relief or recreation, but there are dozens of ways to stay on the wagon and feel the benefits. This practical book has all the facts, advice and ideas you need to start your journey and refresh your life.
Key Selling Point: • The newest addition to our successful Say No to… series, which includes Say No to Plastic (ISBN: 9781786858214), which has sold over 12,000 copies.
WHAT’S SO BAD ABOUT ALCOHOL?
WHAT’S SO BAD ABOUT ALCOHOL? Alcohol may give you confidence, a feeling of euphoria and the ability to laugh at jokes that aren’t funny, but these favourable outcomes are short-lived – the pleasure before the pain. You see, alcohol can impact your life in so many negative ways – with effects on your physical and mental health, relationships, bank balance, appearance, sleep, fertility, sex life, brain function, even your eyesight – that you may find it’s not worth drinking it much or at all. Read on to discover how alcohol can impact you and whether it’s a “frenemy” you could live without.
Your Sleep Is Disrupted
Drinking alcohol affects the neurotransmitters in our brains, which can influence our thoughts, feelings and actions. Alcohol is a depressant, so anxiety, depression and stress can all be amplified by drinking too much. Dehydration, which occurs after drinking alcohol, is also known to cause anxiety. On one end of the scale, you may get “beer fear” – or “hangxiety” – after drinking. At the more serious end of the scale, alcohol is often linked to self-harm and even suicide: alcoholics are up to 120 times more likely to commit suicide than those who are not dependent. If you drink heavily on a regular basis, your brain’s levels of serotonin – a chemical that helps to balance your mood – will be lowered, which may lead you to feeling blue and angst-ridden.

SAY NO TO ALCOHOL
Your Mental Health Is Affected
GIFT & HUMOUR
03/02/2021 12:40
Drinking alcohol near bedtime may help us get to sleep initially, but it will affect the quality of our slumber throughout the night. Why? Drinking disrupts our sleep cycle – particularly the Rapid Eye Movement (REM) stage of sleep. REM sleep is when we dream, and it’s important for mental restoration – which includes things like memory and emotional processing. If it’s disrupted, our sleep is lighter and more restless, meaning we’ll be drowsy, irritable and unable to concentrate properly the next day. After drinking, sleep may also be interrupted by frequent trips to the bathroom. Besides the fact that more liquid is going into our body – so we’ll need to urinate more – alcohol is a diuretic, encouraging the body to lose yet more fluid. Causing excessive relaxation of the muscles in the head, neck and throat, alcohol can also suppress breathing and increase the risk of snoring and other sleep-disordered breathing, such as sleep apnoea. Those with alcohol in their system when in the land of nod are also more likely to sleepwalk, sleep talk and even sleep eat. 3
Say No to Alcohol_SAMPLE PAGES.indd 3-4
WHAT’S SO BAD ABOUT ALCOHOL?
Weight Gain Is Likely Alcohol can make you put on weight – and not just because a large glass of wine contains about the same number of calories as an ice cream, while a pint of cider is as calorific as a sugar-covered doughnut. Yes, the average wine drinker puts on 3 kilograms (7 pounds) of fat a year, but it may not be entirely from the booze itself… Research has shown that drinking alcohol makes you crave food because the neurons in your brain that instigate hunger are activated by alcohol. That’s why, come 2 a.m., you may find yourself either raiding your fridge or seeking out late-night fast food. And just as the calories from alcohol are “empty calories” – they have no nutritional value – the junk food you consume as a result of drinking contains very little in the way of nutrients.
