ICONIC WOMEN IN SPORT
£6.99 • 148x105mm • 160pp • Files available: November 2020
Discover the stories behind 38 iconic and internationally renowned women in sport, all of them record-breakers, trailblazers and gamechangers. Whether from the world of soccer, tennis, gymnastics, swimming, skiing, boxing or skiing, every one of these women has been a SERENA WILLIAMS ground-breaker in her field, 1981-present and deserves to have her achievements celebrated. HER GROUNDBREAKING STORY
HER SUPERPOWERS:
Sports superstar, role model, ambassador. She’s been called the greatest tennis player of all time and it all started with two girls, a racket and one big dream.
It’s hard to imagine the tennis world without Serena Williams. With 23 major singles titles under her belt, Serena has won more than any other man or woman in the Open Era and has been ranked No.1 by the World Tennis Association numerous times. Dominating the international tennis scene for decades, Serena has torn up the court as awesomely alone as she has with her sister. She’s earned 72 championship titles, landed the most Grand Slam titles ever and has won 4 Olympic golds. And, thankfully, she shows no signs of slowing down. What’s her secret? Technically, Serena is a baseline player and tends to play from the base of the court. This gives her time and space to assess and react to her opponent’s shots. Her two-handed backhand and fierce forehand strokes are both delivered powerfully and her iconic power serve is known as one of the greatest in tennis history. In fact, her peak serve speed is the third fastest of all time amongst female players. You’ll see skill and speed in Serena’s every movement. Some call her style “high risk” because there is no hesitation, no jerking or jittering, just maximum pace and power. This enables Serena to quickly take control of rallies, excelling at both offence and defence whether she’s on clay, grass or sand. Secret: clay is her favourite surface to play on as it gives her more time to set up her shots.

SLEEP AND THE MIND

KNOW YOURSELF
ur habits and patterns have a significant impact on the quality of our sleep, so if you’re trying to work out why you’re sleeping badly, look at your evening routine. Are you a worrier? Do you eat close to bedtime? Do you rely on specific criteria to get to sleep, and then find yourself unable to get to do so if these are not met? Do you look at your phone before bedtime? The first step in your journey to a peaceful night’s rest is to recognize these habits and how they can affect you, because all the above have the ability to disrupt your sleep. The good news is that there are plenty of ways to help redress the balance. Read on to discover how.
STRESS AND SLEEP
xperiencing stress is a normal part of life, but too much of it can have a hugely negative impact on our sleep. Cortisol, the “stress” hormone, which is released when we feel anxious or threatened, wreaks havoc with our internal balance, making us feel wide-awake and giving us that “thoughts-going-round-in-circles” feeling. It’s also one of the most commonly reported reasons for sleep deprivation. So, if you’re starting out on your journey to better sleep, the best place to start will be by learning to manage feelings of stress, finding ways you can relax, and making sure you have coping mechanisms in place to deal with difficult events. That way, even if you are in a stressful situation, you’ll able to let go of your thoughts and drift off to sleep.

T a k e t h e P r e ssu r e O f f January often brings with it a feeling of change or resolution, inspiring many of us to set ourselves plenty of challenges for the New Year. Alternatively, there are some years we enter into feeling rather less motivated, struggling to build up any energy or enthusiasm. Whichever of these two categories we fall into, we could be doing ourselves a disservice; either we burn ourselves out by pushing ourselves to the limit, or we feel low because we’ve failed to make the most of what feels like a “fresh start”. This year, take the pressure off, and free yourself from expectation.

Find Your Shine How to Go from Self-Conscious to Self-Confident
Anna Lou Walker
ISBN: 978 1 78783 637 2 £12.99 195x149mm 160pp Hardback January 2021 Rights and Sales Territories: World
Helping you learn to love who you are, this book offers practical advice on how to think positively, feel body confident, fire up your happiness hormones, choose a mood-boosting diet and lifestyle and treat yourself with compassion. Anna Lou Walker is the editor of Reader’s Digest magazine. Her free time is spent poring over the work of women artists and hoarding house plants.
Key Selling Points: • This powerful book, with a stunning bespoke design per page, offers practical advice on how to become more confident in yourself and love who you are. • A similar Summersdale book, How to Be Confident (ISBN: 9781849537957), has sold over 20,000 copies.
Is self-consciousness always bad? All healthy adults are, to some degree, selfconscious. In itself, this emotion is not a bad thing. Being self-aware and mindful of how your behaviour comes across to other people, and how you may be affecting them, are positive traits to have. Healthy self-conscious emotions enable us to take responsibility when we make mistakes, help us to measure how people are reacting to things we say and do and allow us to take pride in our achievements. Self-conscious emotions become unhealthy when they are a symptom of low self-esteem or poor body image. Then, self-conscious thoughts can lead to feelings of depression and anxiety. This kind of self-consciousness may mean you avoid socializing, that you regularly feel embarrassment or shame, or that you speak to yourself unkindly – all habits that can prevent you from living a contented, healthy life.
Give yourself the l o v e you give to others The first thing to do is be happy with yourself and appreciate your body – only then should you try to change things about yourself.

Set your intentions
5 MINUTE BRAIN DUMP
Visualize the day you want
Think about what’s in your diary for today. Ideally, what do you intend to get done? If you only did one thing today, what would that be? What might stop that from happening? How will you deal with that? Get pinpoint specific on what you intend to do and when you’ll do it. When you decide on an action point, write it down. Make an appointment in your calendar and set a reminder if you think you’ll forget. Obstacles become easier to handle and you will feel more confident once you have a plan.
Start the day on a fresh page by clearing your mind. Set a timer, take out a notebook and write for 5 minutes without taking the pen off the page. Pour out whatever’s whizzing around in your brain. Note anything you think is useful, then throw the page away. You may choose to keep your brain dumps to refer back to but it’s not essential. The process and the mental clarity it brings is more important than the result.
Sit quietly and think about your day ahead. Think your way through each hour from morning to evening. How do you want to walk through this day? What would you like to have achieved by the end of it? Make a list if it helps you to visualize things. Think about the conversations you will have. Then, when you meet your daily challenges, your brain thinks you’ve already been there and is better prepared to help you cope.
12
13 7
14
12
Set an alarm for anything you definitely want to happen. So, instead of thinking “I must phone my mother/do some yoga/submit that report in the morning”, set an alarm on your phone to remind you so that it definitely happens. This will stop the day from running away with you without anything getting done. Setting an alarm is particularly useful if you’re trying to take up a brand new habit, because it will take a few weeks for it to become an automatic behaviour.

BREATH WORK We breathe 24/7 and rarely think about it, yet the amount of oxygen we take in affects every cell in our bodies. Many of us breathe badly without realising it. Anxiety, poor posture and emotional blockages can all make our breathing shallow, which means we take in less oxygen and put the body under stress. Breath work aims to correct any abnormalities with our breathing patterns and has physical, mental and spiritual benefits.

By being yourself, you put something
wonderful in the world that was not there before.
EDWIN ELLIOT
Take some time out to think about all the things that make you who you are. Jot down a list of anything that comes to mind – whether it’s the fact that you’re great at sport, that you are clumsy when tired, that you love animals or are afraid of the dark. Do this with honesty and without judgement and include everything that comes to mind, even perceived weaknesses. These are the things that make you awesome and uniquely you.

Pick a power outfit Never underestimate the power of small things. You might think that clothes don’t matter, and you’re not completely wrong – looking sharp in the exam isn’t going to gain you extra marks. But the psychological boost of feeling good from dressing well is definitely worth a shot. Remember, you also need to feel comfortable if you’re going to be sitting down indoors for multiple hours, so think carefully. Plan your perfect power outfit ahead of time and have it laid out ready the night before. That way you’re not rushing to find clean socks in a panic the morning of the exam. If you don’t have much choice over what you wear, you can still prep your uniform as normal but maybe wear your lucky T-shirt underneath or a favourite bracelet. Anything that puts you in a positive frame of mind – whether it’s a bold colour or a special accessory – is going to help.

TU RN YOU R H OME INTO A SANCTUARY
INTRODUCTION Take a deep breath and relax. It’s time to enter the world of retreat, a time and space where you get to switch off and chill, do stuff you love, eat food that makes you feel fantastic, sleep, read, stretch, take long hot baths or anything else that helps you unwind. There are a thousand ways to retreat from a busy life and grab some life affirming me time and this book aims to inspire and help you discover what works for you. Not taking time out is a bit like driving a car without ever stopping to refuel with quality gas or get a service. Eventually, it’s going to grind to a halt and be in need of some serious repair work. The health benefits of going on retreat are enormous. It can ease anxiety, spark creativity, aid sleep and help break bad habits. It also gives you a chance to step back and reflect on your life. If you don’t
do that occasionally, you could end up racing down the wrong path and ending up in a job, relationship or friendship group that’s not quite right. A busy life can be an awesome one, but to be your best, happiest, healthiest and most energetic self, you have to experience life in the slow lane too. Don’t worry, there’s no requirement to book off entire weekends to go on retreat (although sometimes it’s great if you can do that) because you can experience the benefits by regularly putting aside just 10-minutes now and then. While there are lots of wonderful organized retreats all over the world offering anything from crafting through to yoga and writing, spending money is not a pre-requisite. Retreat is a frame of mind and you can experience it anywhere – at home, abroad, in the shower, your back garden, a castle, a farm or deep in the woods. The choice is yours.
When preparing your home for retreat, imagine that someone who you admire or look up to is coming over. This will offer you a sense of importance and purpose. You’re not prepared to chill out amongst piles of dirty laundry and half-eaten pizza because you value yourself. This time is sacred. If you can face it, it’s a good idea to declutter and do a deep clean before you commit to regular retreat time at home. If that’s too much, concentrate on one room or even just a corner of one. The idea is to create a space that is soothing to you. Somewhere you can relax quietly and lose yourself in whatever it is you are doing. You might like to hang some pictures that make you feel good, scatter a few healthy houseplants around the place and decorate with ornaments, crystals or good luck charms. Think about all your senses, not just what you can see. Is the space comfortable? Can you get some peace and quiet? And does it smell good? You can create an atmosphere of blissful calm in your home with an essential oil spritz. All it takes is a few sprays around a room for it to be suffused with a glorious, soothing fragrance.

er wh en life ’s p a th
Many of us lie awake at night worrying that we won’t get the recommended eight hours of sleep that we need to function well. However, the ‘worry’ part of this scenario is what has the biggest negative effect. Studies have shown that most people will have no problem functioning with six or seven hours’ sleep, and furthermore, that if you have lost sleep, you only need to catch up on about a third of the lost time to get back to normal. For example, if you went to bed an hour and a half late one night of the week, a thirty-minute liein at the weekend would do the trick. Changing our perceptions of the time we need to sleep can help us to feel more secure, and therefore help us sleep more easily, with a better quality of sleep.

An important question to ask yourself is, where do you feel most and least confident? This is not just a question of location – although for some people certain places bolster their confidence or make them feel worse – it is more about the areas of your life you feel are at polar opposites where your confidence is concerned. Someone may, for example, feel that they have raised their family well and be confident as a parent, while lacking in confidence when it comes to work. Knowing the areas, both physical and emotional, which affect your confidence can help you to build your confidence levels. At first, situations or places that knock your confidence can be avoided when your confidence is already at a low point, and later you can work on altering the way you perceive and feel about these situations using the tips in this book, particularly those that emphasise mindfulness. 11

HELP YOUR CHILD MANAGE THEIR MOODS
Finding the right time and place to talk No matter how keen you are to get your child talking about their moods, don’t announce a “sit-down chat” as it can sound too formal and intimidating. And don’t attempt to discuss your child’s moods if they’re in the midst of an angry outburst because you’re unlikely to get anywhere. Kids often open up when you least expect them to – on car journeys, for instance, when there are fewer distractions and no need for potentially awkward eye contact. Alternatively, spend time with your child doing something they enjoy, such as colouring or playing a game. Once they’re feeling relaxed and the conversation is already flowing, you could broach tricky subjects with less chance of causing upset.
4
Give your child your full attention When your child starts to open up to you, put down your phone, turn off the TV and stop doing chores. Demonstrate that you’re hearing what they’re saying by offering a “reflection statement”. Reflective listening, a term coined by psychologist Carl Rogers, involves repeating what your child has said to you (“It makes me mad when you say that my room is too messy”) without twisting it or adding a different tone. This makes your child feel heard and ensures that you’ve understood them correctly. Empathise with their worries and don’t downplay

HELP YOUR CHILD MANAGE THEIR MOODS
DON’T TAKE IT PERSONALLY Try not to feel hurt by your child’s moods. Admittedly, it’s hard not to take it personally when you’re bearing the brunt of their angry outbursts. But this really isn’t about you and your child isn’t deliberately “playing up” to ruin your day. When your child has lost control of their emotions, they will look to you for calming reassurance. So if you find yourself asking them “Why are you doing this to me?”, or losing control of your own emotions in response to their behaviour, it may be time to briefly step back. Providing your child is safe where they are, it’s okay to turn around or retreat to another room momentarily to gather your thoughts and composure.

Reading To open a book is to step into a magical new world, far from the worries of everyday life. Encourage your child to read regularly, whether they read aloud to you or on their own. Research compiled by The Reading Agency charity has found that reading is a real mood booster. Not only does it increase a sense of empathy and encourage better relationships with others, it’s also been found to reduce the symptoms of depression and improve a sense of well-being. Age-appropriate audio books are also a wonderful, relaxing way to get lost in a book - and are a great option for bedtime in particular.

The Self-Care Kit for Stressed-Out Teens Healthy Habits and Calming Advice to Help You Stay Positive
Frankie Young
ISBN: 978 1 78783 688 4 £7.99 170x127mm 128pp Hardback May 2021 Rights and Sales Territories: World
Teenage life is an exciting but stressful time. Self-care provides you with the tools to sustain your mental and physical health so you can be your best self. Find out how to stay positive and focused through exam season, feel better equipped to cope with everyday stress, love the skin you’re in and be an ally to yourself and those around you.
Key Selling Points: • This practical, down-to-earth book aims to help teenagers take care of themselves and reduce their stress. • Similar Summersdale titles include: The Little Book of Mindfulness (ISBN: 9781786859679), How to Be Confident (ISBN: 9781849537957) and How to Be Resilient (ISBN: 9781786855145). WHAT IS SELF-CARE? Well, it’s self-explanatory; it’s caring for yourself, which is a necessity, and that’s not just brushing your teeth, it’s about looking after yourself in the midst of the pressures of school, getting enough sleep (stop going to bed at 3 a.m., I see you) and being alert to when your mental, physical or emotional well-being is off kilter, and acting upon it so you can be your best self. Let’s be clear about self-care from the start: it doesn’t just involve pampering, although that can be a fun part of it, instead self-care covers all manner of things, from eating healthily, getting enough sleep, having good friends to call upon, keeping fit, taking time out to pause when things get hectic, and ultimately being able to tune in to your needs and respond to them.
CHAPTER 1:
PUT YOURSELF FIRST!
Start by writing three great compliments to yourself here.
THREE GOOD THINGS Make a habit of paying three compliments to yourself every day when you get up and look at yourself in the mirror. They don’t have to be about physical attributes – especially with your morning hair! – but things that make you think “Yes, I’m alright actually”, such as: I’m a great listener; I’m really good to have around in a crisis because I’m calm and methodical; I’m a good friend – these nice compliments will make you feel good all day.
Caring for myself is not self-indulgent; caring for myself is an act of survival. Audre Lorde

UnAnxious How to Manage Your Worries, Transform Your Attitude and Feel More Positive Every Day
Claire Chamberlain
ISBN: 978 1 78783 672 3 £8.99 154x111mm 160pp Hardback April 2021 Rights and Sales Territories: World
This pocket-sized guide will help you recognize and understand the way you feel, and offers practical advice for looking after your mental and physical well-being. From challenging the way you think to making positive lifestyle changes, this book is your starting point for a more carefree, content and confident you. Claire Chamberlain is a writer, specializing in health, fitness and well-being. She lives in south-east London with her husband, two children and rescue cat, Oscar.
Key Selling Points: • The perfect gift from a concerned friend or relative to someone who may be struggling with feelings of anxiety. • Similar Summersdale titles include: Unlonely (ISBN: 9781787835443), Self-Care (ISBN: 9781786857750) and Let Go (ISBN: 9781786857569). The problem with perfection Perfectionism can sound like a positive trait. After all, striving for perfection proves you’re hardworking, driven and ambitious, right? The problem is, perfection is unattainable and the need to reach this lofty height can quickly become an all-consuming obsession. What’s more, the fear of falling short often creates a sense of paralysis; knowing you might not be perfect means you become too scared to even try. If you are a perfectionist, try letting go of the unrealistic expectations you set yourself. The truth is that being good enough really is good enough.

You’re deserving of kindness. Always When you’re feeling happy, calm and positive, it’s easy to treat yourself with love and kindness. But when you’re struggling with feelings of anxiety, being kind to yourself can feel far more difficult. Perhaps you don’t feel you deserve kindness, or maybe you don’t have the energy to perform small acts of self-care. But remember, no matter how you’re feeling right now, you’re always worthy and deserving of love, and it’s always OK to look after yourself. 5

Eye-watering onions
Lockdown has meant a lot more screen time for kids but one-year-old Alice Mitchell-Johnson managed to order some onions from Deliveroo when she was playing on her dad’s iPad. The three pack only cost £1.50 but by the time the delivery charge was added, they cost an eye-watering £20. Dad Jamie cheerfully said he’d make a curry with the costly veg, but Deliveroo kindly gave Jamie a gift voucher to cover the cost when they heard about the mix up and even offered to deliver the rest of the ingredients for his curry.

FLORAL TRIBUTES When Julie Spence realised lockdown was going to stop her making her annual pilgrimage to lay flowers on the memorial bench of her eight-year-old son Callum, she was heartbroken. On the anniversary of Callum’s death, Julie and her family would always visit the cemetery in Leeds where he was buried and get the train to Scarborough to go to his memorial bench, a journey she had made for 15 years after Callum was killed in a road accident. Unable to travel, Julie put out an appeal on Facebook. Her request was answered by student Harley Johnson, who not only visited the bench but also shared the request. As a result Callum’s bench was covered with flowers brought by strangers. “It’s been overwhelming,” Julie said. “I can’t believe people who don’t know me and never knew Callum would do it, especially at times like these. For their help I will be forever grateful.”

Tip If you’re short on time but want to have a hot, nutritious meal when you get home of an evening, invest in a slow cooker. This is one-step, one-pot cooking and it couldn’t be simpler. They also use less electricity than a conventional oven and with the longer low-temperature cooking time, they help to tenderize cheaper cuts of meat, as well as bringing out the flavours in food. Many meals can be created in a slow-cooker, such as stews, casseroles and soups. 35

Bird Feeder Cleanliness
Feeder Placement If your goal is to use a bird feeder to attract local birds to spend time in your garden, perfecting your feeder placement will help turn it into an ideal dining spot for your bird neighbours. The priority here is to place any feeder in a spot that will feel and be safe for the birds, nowhere they would need to be constantly on alert for predators. If they feel afraid at your feeder one too many times, birds aren’t likely to return. First, avoid overly noisy or wide open areas. Next, no matter what type of feeder you’ve chosen, try placing it at eye level, or slightly above. Too low and the birds are more likely to be threatened by a cat or other ground predator. And though it may initially seem counterintuitive, using a window feeder actually reduces the risk of birds flying into your windows, giving them a better visual representation of where the glass is located. 12

DIY Bird Feeders Ready to take matters into your own hands? If you prefer to make your own garden supplies, a bird feeder is a great place to start. One easy beginner option is to whip up bird feed fat balls. Homemade fat balls mimic the suet bird feed blocks you can find in most garden shops, but on a much smaller budget. All you need is lard or suet (either vegetable or beef ) and bird-safe seed mix. Combine two parts seed with one part suet and heat slowly in a pan, stirring until they’ve melted together. Scoop the mixture and roll into balls, then freeze to harden them. As easy as can be. These fat balls can be placed in any empty hanging feeder or on a platform. To create your own totally DIY feeder, you can re-use empty plastic cups or containers. Rather than balling the suet mixture, scoop it directly into the cups and freeze to harden. Attach twine or string and hang at an appropriate height for a delightful treat that birds will literally flock to. Alternatively, rather than making fat balls, you can use traditional bird seed and create your own holder from an empty plastic bottle or jug. Be sure to fully wash the container first. rom there, it s a bree e. ake a si able hole around the middle of the bottle, then make two smaller holes further down and slide a wooden stick through from one to the other to create a perch. Fill with bird seed to below the point of the larger hole and hang in a smart spot for a perfect easy feeder.
Most feeder types are prone to letting in at least some moisture, which leads to mouldy or rotting bird food over the course of time. Platform feeders are particularly prone to this, and thus need to be cleaned and filled with fresh food often, about once a week. But even covered feeders will need to be cleaned and refilled regularly. As rotting seeds and husks can make birds sick, it’s important to be vigilant about cleaning. The simplest method for cleaning is to separate all pieces of the feeder and wash them in a dishwasher, or handwash using soap and boiling water (or a highly diluted bleach solution). The last step for keeping your bird feeding area clean—and the easiest to forget—is to clean the ground around your feeders. Seed husks and bird food will often drop to the ground, and there they can also become mouldy, potentially causing illness for not only birds but other small ground creatures that stop by. 13

The Rage Journal Cathartic Prompts and Un-spirational Quotes for Those Who Need to Vent
ISBN: 978 1 78783 675 4 £9.99 210x148mm 160pp Paperback April 2021 Rights and Sales Territories: World
When life drives you up the wall, sometimes the only thing to do is rage. This journal is for those moments when deep breathing and picturing your happy place just isn’t going to cut it. If you need to vent, grab your pen and unleash all your frustrations into these pages – and revel in just saying AARGGHHH!
Key Selling Points: • Designed for those who are so over the mindfulness trend, and believe that nothing makes you feel better than a good old vent every now and then! • Similar Summersdale titles include: F*ck This (ISBN: 9781786852212), Shit Happens Get Over It (ISBN: 9781786850218) and The Calm Journal (ISBN: 9781787833029).
In the space below, write down the last thing you remember getting really mad about – the pettier the better. Describe the experience.
CHOOSE TO RAGE
I WANDER ABOUT
Today, I choose joy
HATING EVERYTHING
This book is all about allowing yourself to feel the rage that you would normally try to supress – like when you have a terrible time on public transport and it ruins your day; or when you hear that song you hate being played on the radio yet again and it makes you want to punch a wall; or you’re late because you were stuck behind some slow walkers. These are classic examples of things that cause everyday rage – the tiny, annoying things that build up over time and eat away at your mood. You might feel silly for getting mad at these little things, because there are so many other, bigger problems in the world, right?
I BEHOLD.
Now, write down why your feelings were completely justified.
Right. It’s true. There are most definitely bigger problems than the fact that you hate what’s in the charts right now. But that doesn’t change the fact that when these things happen, in that exact moment, you feel riled up and ready to scream. Just because your frustrations (probably) don’t matter in the scheme of things, it doesn’t mean you don’t feel REALLY MAD.
reality
So, just ignore the fact that your anger is petty. WHO CARES? Instead of simmering away and feeling cranky, take ten minutes and choose to rage. Feel your feelings and then let them out so that you can be left in peace.

YOGA POSES
overview The root chakra is the foundation on which our souls and spiritual energies are built. Located at the base of the spine, near the tailbone, the root chakra centers around our survival instinct and need for security. It also deals with our personal strengths, willpower, self-esteem, and our passions. When balanced, we are grounded, energetic and independent. When unbalanced, we become fearful, unstable and insecure. The root chakra keeps our feet firmly on the ground, and without it we can fall flat on our faces. Do not take the root chakra for granted as it is the base of our mental and physical health and well-being.
Everything you were looking for was right there with you all along.

One of the best ways to open and realign your chakras is by doing yoga. Yoga balances the body: physically, mentally and spiritually. When we do yoga, we become more connected with the body and more connected with our charkas. For the root chakra, it’s important to focus on yoga poses that move your spine and legs, helping you become grounded. Here are a few suggestions. Warrior I: Also known as Virabhadrasana, this is a standing yoga pose that helps improve balance, stability, and encourages bodily awareness. This pose strengthens the legs, feet, core, and back.

The Secrets of Spiritual Healing A Beginner’s Guide to Energy Therapies
Elsie Wild
ISBN: 978 1 78783 683 9 £7.99 148x105mm 128pp Paperback May 2021 Rights and Sales Territories: World
Exploring the fascinating history behind holistic healing techniques, and providing practical advice for trying them yourself, this book will teach you how to achieve true balance in your life and embrace natural and vibrational energies. Elsie Wild is a writer and witchy woman haunting New York. She has practised divination for ten years and has written horoscopes and guides about her craft for a variety of online publications.
Key Selling Point: • Similar titles include: The Little Book of Crystals (ISBN: 9781786859594), and Spirituality (ISBN: 9781786859693).
Crystals can be used in various ways. You can place them on your chakras to energize them, you can hold them while meditating, or you carry them with you on jewelry or in your office. While you can use any crystal that speaks to you, here are some crystals that are the best for spiritual healing: AMETHYST: promotes inner calm and decisiveness. AGATE: promotes grounding and stability. CARNELIAN: promotes creativity and vitality. JASPER: promotes joy and stress relief. L APIS L AZULI: promotes wisdom and selfawareness. TURQUOISE: protects against negative energy.
WITCHING STICK Dowsing is a form of divination traditionally used to find water, metals and gemstones, but can also be used to find and heal negative energy – a practice known as energy dowsing. Dowsing works by using a Y-shaped stick known as a witching stick.
Witching sticks are usually made of wood but can also be made out of copper, suspended by nylon or silk thread, or using a crystal wand. To practise energy dowsing, take your witching stick and slowly move it over your entire body, from the top of your head to the tips of your toes. If the witching stick moves, it means that your energy can be off and that your chakra or aura needs to be cleansed and realigned.
PENDULUM Like the witching stick, a pendulum can be used for dowsing, but is much easier to carry around with you. A pendulum is a symmetrical, weighted object that is hung from a single chain or cord. You can use anything you like as your pendulum: a rock, a wooden ball, a glass marble. As long as it’s not magnetic, it’s good to go (though most prefer to use a crystal).

The Secrets of Fortune Telling A Beginner’s Guide to the Art of Divination
Elsie Wild
ISBN: 978 1 78783 684 6 £7.99 148x105mm 128pp Paperback May 2021 Rights and Sales Territories: World
Exploring the fascinating history behind divination techniques, and providing practical advice for trying them yourself, this book will teach you how to decipher the signs in the world around you and discover methods for divining your future.
Key Selling Points: • Part of a new series offering accessible introductions to esoteric subjects. • An approachable introduction to an increasingly popular topic, with a contemporary design to appeal to a wide audience. • Similar titles include: The Little Book of Tarot (ISBN: 9781786857989) and The Little Book of Astrology (ISBN: 9781849539746).
During the Middle Ages, palmistry was outlawed throughout Europe for its supposed connections with devil worship. Ironically, palmistry was practiced by witch-hunters who interpreted the marks on a person’s hand to determine if they had a pact with the devil. Palmistry was revived in the nineteenth century when Victorian society’s interest in the occult started to grow. Today, palmistry, along with tarot and astrology, is one of the most popular form of divination.
Here is what the average palm looks like, and where each of the lines are.
ARIES: First sign in the zodiac. Represents passion, independence, innovation, and enthusiasm. Ruled by Mars. Fire sign.
Reading Between the Lines
ASTROLOGY: THE BASICS
Each palm holds a different meaning depending on your hand dominance. Your non-dominant hand reveals your potential and what the future has in store for you; your dominant hand is what you’ve done with that potential so far, so you should read both hands. In palmistry there are three major lines in palm reading: the life line, the head line, and the heart line. These lines represent our character, important events, life lessons, and our emotional life. As you noticed, you have many other lines on your hand – we’ll get to those later.
4
To understand how astrology works we need to learn the language of the cosmos, i.e. the language of cycles and patterns. To do this, astrologers calculate the movement and the positions of planets, constellations, asteroids, the sun, and the moon using an ephemeris (a device that gives the calculated positions of a celestial object at regular intervals throughout a period of time). To understand astrology, you are going to need to understand what the zodiac signs and the planets represent and how they move. Let’s start with the zodiac signs. There are twelve signs in total.
5
TAURUS: Earth sign. Represents determination, loyalty, steadiness, and a focus on material goods. Ruled by Venus.
GEMINI: Air Sign. Represents communication, curiosity, sociability, and intelligence. Ruled by Mercury.
CANCER: Water Sign. Represents sensitivity, compassion, and imagination. Ruled by the moon.

What to do about drooping leaves Droopy leaves are a sorry sight on a formerly perky houseplant. And it’s not surprising they look so sad—wilted leaves are a sign that your plant isn’t getting enough water. Without adequate hydration, plants can’t photosynthesize, which means they can’t make any food. We’d be looking pretty mopey too. Try increasing the amount that you water your plant and you should soon see them return to their sprightly self. If your plant is still droopy despite regular watering, try placing a few ice cubes on the surface of its soil (but take care that they aren’t actually touching your plant) at the start of the day. As the ice cubes slowly melt, they will provide regular hydration. The next time you repot any persistent droopers, place a damp sponge into the bottom of their new home before filling it with soil. The sponge will act as a water reservoir, delivering a much-needed drink when your plant begins to slouch.
16
Monstera deliciosa
A beautiful plant is like having a friend around the house. Beth Ditto
These glossy green goddesses are an icon in the world houseplants. Looking as if they have just emerged from the jungle, with their large, notched leaves, they are a statement plant for any living room. The reason for the distinctive notches in their leaves is due to the plant’s natural jungle habitat. As it usually grows beneath a canopy of other plants, it develops holes and notches in its leaves in order to let as much light through to the lowest foliage as possible. In the wild, monstera deliciosa can grow up to 20 metres (65 feet) tall. Although potted varieties will not get this large, be prepared to clear some space in your home to accommodate for your happily growing plant.
At a glance: • Water occasionally and allow the soil to dry out between doses. Mist your plant every few days if your home is warm to mimic the tropical climate it originates from. • Place somewhere that gets plenty of light but no direct sun. • Can grow up to approx. 2 metres (6 ½ feet) indoors. • Toxic to babies and pets.

The Retirement Handbook A Guide to Making the Most of Your Newfound Freedom
Ted Heybridge
ISBN: 978 1 78783 698 3 £9.99 204x135mm 192pp Hardback June 2021 Rights and Sales Territories: World
Retirement is a fresh chapter and permission to try something new. It’s also a great time to take care of your health, money and daily happiness. This practical and insightful guide ranges from holidays and hobbies to advice on staying active, mentally sharp and emotionally fulfilled.
Key Selling Points: • An updated and expanded edition of The Joy of Retirement (ISBN: 9781849536615), this is the perfect gift for someone who is retired, or soon to be. • Will appeal to those who enjoyed How to Age Joyfully (ISBN: 9781786859686).
THE RETIREMENT HANDBOOK
Being physically active leads to better health and greater happiness. The level of strenuousness you should aim for depends on your current level of fitness, but retirement is a perfect time to develop an interest in physical activities such as hiking, cycling or gardening – or something a little more unusual like t’ai chi, horse riding or wild swimming. The rewards of exercise are many, and you may discover a new passion. Moderate exercise helps your immune cells fight off infection, while releasing those feel-good endorphins that leave you smiling and help you to relax. It also boosts creative thinking, builds self-esteem, releases tension and can be social and fun. Perhaps you are already physically fit and enjoy sports such as tennis or golf, or even running marathons. Now you have a great opportunity to improve your game and could also give something back to the community by coaching younger players or runners. Even if you’re not sporty at all, some kind of activity will help break up your week and get you out of the house, as well as improving overall health and aiding sleep.

Yoga
Try Ayurveda
Practising yoga regularly can have multiple advantages for health in retirement; it strengthens your core, increases muscle tone and improves flexibility, vitality, alertness, balance and breathing. It can counteract stress and improve mood as well. It’s also very adaptable, depending on your capability, and there are many types to choose from. In fact, retirement is a good time to take up yoga as you have the time to work at it, and its benefits will be valuable in later life.
Ayurveda is a sister science of yoga, and offers a holistic approach to health and wellness. A treatment plan can naturally heal a wide range of illnesses, while an Ayurvedic diet creatively and deliciously helps to strengthen your body’s immune system. Full body massages with warm oils are part of the treatment, making it an ideal thing to try while on holiday somewhere warm and serene – especially while getting yourself in shape for the start of your retirement.
Hatha is a gentle form of yoga; ideally, find a group specifically designed for your age, but if you can’t, then a beginner group is fine. A good teacher will ensure you don’t risk injury by moving your body incorrectly. If yoga is popular and there are plenty of practitioners in your area, you could look into Iyengar yoga, which uses props and is considered good for seniors; viniyoga, a form which adapts to the individual; or water yoga. As Kate Feldman writes on the website www.retirementandgoodliving.com, yoga has changed in the last few decades from something obscure to a practice that’s widely accepted as being beneficial for “physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being”. 8
Make the Most of Your Gym Membership Chances are, when you were in full-time employment, you barely got time to dash to the gym and dash out again – back to work, to the supermarket, to be home in time for dinner. Now you have the time to give your gym a proper workout! Instead of leaving straight after an exercise class or session on the machines, go for a swim or indulge in some time relaxing in the sauna, steam room or hot tub. Instead of sticking to the same old routines, try some of the other classes on offer, such as Pilates – excellent for strength and breathing – or a dance/aerobics combination. 9

Types of Activism
A popular form of artivism is creating wall murals, and one of the most effective implementations of this has been performed by PangeaSeed Foundation. Their groundbreaking mural program “Sea Walls: Artists for the Oceans” is dedicated to addressing the pressing environmental issues earth’s water bodies are facing. Their network of 300 artists has created more than 350 awe-inspiring ocean-themed murals in 15 countries around the globe. This nomadic program hand the ownership of the murals to the local community when they leave; ensuring that the spirit to create art and spread awareness lives on long after painting of the first mural. There have been several reports of artists even collaborating with local scientists to make sure their designs are well-informed. The murals channel attention towards crucial issues like overfishing, habitat loss due to global climate change, and plastic pollution. The murals depicting fragility of oceans soon became iconic spots in their respective cities. Public art, especially wall murals, are the visible reminders even “non-artsy” folks catch on and engage with. These visible daily reminders are powerful enough to instil positive behavioural changes.
A portmanteau of “art” and “activism”, artivism is the term for activists using visual media to promote, or draw attention to, their cause. Coming in multiple forms, it is an especially creative way to awaken the public consciousness to certain issues and injustices. Artivism is about the link between arts and social impact, and about building an understanding of how creative approaches can influence and address key issues. In particular, artivism opens up opportunities for self-expression among young and possibly marginalized communities, who may not yet have the platform they need to bring public and political attention to their agenda. Another great benefit of artivism comes from its accessibility; not only can a wide range of people take part in this form of activism, but a diverse set of people can also engage with and respond to it. It is a driver of social change which carries few barriers, and which often transcends cultures, languages and communities.
Mahatma Gandhi A purveyor of non-violent resistance, Mahatma Gandhi was the epitome of empathy-led sustained activism in his lifetime. Looking into his life, we realize how the seeds of the strongest rebellion are sown by even the “weakest” injustices. According to popular legend, it was the fact that he was once asked to get off a train in apartheid South Africa that sparked his lifelong activism, and which resulted in him gifting the world the iconic weapon of civil disobedience. Born on 2 October, 1869, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi grew up to be an iconic Indian social activist, a seasoned lawyer, and an inspiring politician. He is internationally esteemed for advocating and implementing non-violence in all forms of his protest. Growing up in a devout Hindu family that advocated “ahimsa” (non-violence towards all living beings), the belief in the eternal universe came naturally to Gandhi.
