The Hotel on the Roof of the World Five Years in Tibet Alec Le Sueur ISBN: 978 1 84953 343 0 £8.99 129x198mm 352pp Paperback January 2013 Rights and Sales Territories: World Rights sold: North America, China, Germany

The very aptly named Mr Pong had the kind of breath that could stun at over ten feet… This wasn’t just bad – there was something rotten down there. Something had crawled in and died. Gunter howled with laughter as he saw the look of horror on my face. It was the best entertainment he had seen since he had watched Chef chasing yaks through the kitchens. Few foreigners are lucky enough to set foot on Tibetan soil, but Alec Le Sueur spent five extraordinary years there, working in the unlikeliest Holiday Inn in the world. Against the breathtaking beauty of the Himalayas unfolds a highly amusing and enlightening account of his experiences, from fly infestations at state banquets, unexpected deliveries of live snakes, a predominance of yaks and everything yakrelated, insurmountable communication problems to a dead guest. Le Sueur, the only Westerner since the days of Heinrich Harrer to spend so long in Tibet, provides a fascinating insight into a country that was only just opening up to the outside world, from what can only be described as the 'Fawlty Towers' of Lhasa. Alec Le Sueur has worked in luxury hotels in London, St Tropez and Paris, as well as his five-year stint at the infamous Holiday Inn Lhasa. Based in Jersey, Alec gives frequent talks on his time in Tibet and is a regular contributor to Food & Wine magazine.

‘Tibet remains obstinately in my mind as one of the most strangely seductive places I’ve been to... Thank you to Alec Le Sueur for bringing it to life’ Michael Palin ‘Le Sueur... provides us with the means of improving our knowledge of a far away country about which we know little’ THE GUARDIAN ‘A comparison with Fawlty Towers is inevitable, but this is funnier’ THE MAIL ON SUNDAY ■ Previous editions have sold over 15,000 copies. Media opportunities: Extracts/serialisation. Feature angles: A profile of Tibet: its people, its culture and its stunning natural beauty; Tibet then and now: have Western visitors affected the culture and traditions over the last 15 years?; The bizarre and extraordinary things people see when working in hotels. Bon Courage A French Renovation in Rural Limousin Richard Wiles ISBN: 978 1 84953 364 5 £8.99 129x198mm 336pp Paperback February 2013 Rights and Sales Territories: World

A dilapidated, rat-infested stone barn set amidst thirteen acres of unkempt pasture and overgrown woodland might not be many people’s vision of a potential dream home. But for English couple Richard and his wife Al, the cavernous, oak-beamed building in a sleepy hamlet in the Limousin region of France is perfect. Tussles with French bureaucracy allied with fierce storms that wreak havoc on the property do little to dampen their resolve as they immerse themselves in the calme of this quiet corner of France, dreaming of taking trips in Richard’s hot-air balloon and starting their very own llama farm. The couple’s colourful, oen eccentric neighbours watch their progress with curiosity: the jovial ex-gendarme and his wife, who seems able to foretell the weather; the lonely widow who offers copious amounts of gâteau in exchange for convivial chat; and the brawny cattleman with suspicious motives in offering to clean up the couple’s land. A well-intentioned if oen hapless do-it-yourselfer, Richard’s hilarious and heartwarming tale of a new life in France resounds to the Gallic refrain, ‘Bon courage!’ Richard Wiles, author of bestselling Bon Courage! and Bonne Chance! writes on topics as diverse as llama keeping, home restoration, social history and hot-air ballooning, and splits his time between France and Lewes, East Sussex.

I came here looking for some kind of happiness. I think it might be the cleverest thing I have ever done. One difficult winter when her love life falls apart (and so does she), Jen decides on Three Gis to Self. Gis One and Two are reducing her workload and staying away from relationships for a while. Gi Three, the most important, is a month alone on a tiny, wild Greek island. It’s a chance to find another kind of contentment: one that comes from the sun and the sea, from the aroma of herbs on the mountains and holding an octopus in your hands. She decides to act on her dream of staying for longer – because life is too short not to reach out for what makes us happy. But just when everything is falling into place again, the strangest thing happens… Falling in Honey is an honest, mouth-watering mix of comedy and romance, and an unforgettable journey from heartbreak to happiness. Jennifer Barclay is a freelance editor and writer and now lives her dream life on Tilos (population 500), having spent much time in Greece and other countries. She is the author of Meeting Mr Kim: Or How I Went to Korea and Learned to Love Kimchi (ISBN: 978 1 84024 676 6) and The Traveller’s Friend (ISBN: 978 1 84953 189 4).

Head Over Heels in France Falling in Love in the Lot Samantha Brick ISBN: 978 1 84953 392 8 £8.99 129x198mm 320pp Paperback April 2013 Rights and Sales Territories: World

‘Sam?’ ‘Oui?’ This is about the limit of my French. ‘Tu es très, très belle.’ In the car on the journey home Nadia and Miriam cackle about Pascal ‘being so’ on me. I listen from my seat behind them, where they can’t see me roll my eyes. I’d never consider a Frenchman – would I? When Samantha Brick’s life started to unravel – her company in liquidation, homeless, penniless and friendless, and on max-strength anti-depressants – it seemed that everything was going wrong. But a chance week away in France led to the most unexpected of all turnarounds: a whirlwind romance with gun-toting, stubborn and ever-so-macho Pascal. It wasn’t until she moved in to his cottage in the beautiful Lot region in south-west France that she realised how shamefully ill-equipped she was for the country life. Like Cinderella in reverse, Samantha had to learn to cook, clean and chop wood, as well as discover how to be a step-mum, finding love and happiness along the way. Samantha Brick is an award-winning TV producer for every major UK channel and MTV and Fox in the US and a regular contributor to the Daily Mail, Daily Express, You magazine and Grazia. She frequently appears on television and radio. She's based in Gindou, France. 4

Extreme Sleeps Adventures of a Wild Camper Phoebe Smith ISBN: 978 1 84953 393 5 £8.99 129x198mm 320pp Paperback April 2013 Rights and Sales Territories: World

I’d become officially addicted to what I called ‘extreme sleeping’ – a kind of addictive high-adrenaline sport – but rather than being defined by pushing the boundaries of physical activity, my particular pursuit was marked by a distinct lack of it. Challenged by a cocky Australian in Woolloomooloo, veteran globetrotter Phoebe Smith sets out to prove that the extreme camping experiences available in the UK could rival anything found elsewhere in the world. In this sometimes scary, frequently funny and intriguing journey around the country, Phoebe attempts to discover and conquer its wildest places. From spending the night in the decaying wreckage of a World War Two bomber at Bleaklow to pitching next to the adrenaline-inducing sheer drops of Lizard Point, Phoebe’s extreme sleeps defy her perceptions of the great outdoors and teach her about herself along the way. Phoebe Smith has written for newspapers and magazines as a Travel, Adventure and Outdoor journalist and is editor of Wanderlust magazine. When she’s not planning her next escapade, she is most likely to be found in the mountains, powered by nothing more than her own feet. She's based in Peterborough, UK.

■ Author is Editor of Wanderlust, an awardwinning travel magazine with a circulation of 37,000. ■ Will appeal to youthful fans of walking, hiking and camping (the fastest growing age group of Ramblers – current membership 135,000 – is 20–30-year-olds). ■ Each chapter details one of the extreme sleeps. Media opportunities: Extracts/serialisation. Feature angles: What’s the appeal of extreme camping?; Can the UK rival the rest of the world for extreme places to spend the night?; The best places to camp in the UK; Discovering off-the-beaten track places to camp. The author is available for interviews and to write exclusive articles. Photos available.

À la Mod My So-Called Tranquil Family Life in Rural France Ian Moore ISBN: 978 1 84953 399 7 £8.99 129x198mm 320pp Paperback May 2013 Sales and Rights Territories: World

Three weeks into our hen ownership and there wasn’t a dicky-bird, nothing. Natalie’s theory for this was that they were bored. Can hens be bored? Really? They’re hens for God’s sake; do they need to be stretched intellectually before they produce any eggs? What am I supposed to do, read them Chomsky? Comedian, mod and professional grump Ian Moore has had enough. Tired of being unable to park anywhere near his cramped house in a noisy town he doesn’t like, he hatches a plan to move his wife and young son to a remote corner of the Loire Valley in search of serenity and space. Several years later, Ian finds himself up to his neck in bilingual offspring, feral cats, promiscuous horses, dysfunctional spaniels and needy hens; he’s wrestling with electric fences, a foreign language, a mountain of animal waste and a wife who collects livestock like there’s a biblical flood on the horizon, all while trying not to dirty his loafers. But despite the ups, downs and increasing demands of Ian’s showbiz career, the Moore family persevere in true Brit style to create a unique, colourful and ultimately rewarding life in their new home – à la campagne and à la mod! Ian Moore is a stand-up comedian in the UK and a husband, father of three boys, farmhand and chutney-maker in France. He is a mod in both walks of life and most of his time is spent travelling grumpily between the two. 6

‘One of the country’s top comedians’ THE GUARDIAN ■ The author is a professional comedian with an established public profile and online presence, with his own website (www.ianmoore.info) and a blog about his life in France. ■ A unique take on the ‘new home in France’ narrative, including insights into the life of a comedian, as well the ins and outs of country living abroad. Media opportunities: Extracts/serialisation. Feature angles: The hilarities of moving to France with a young family; Stand up and be counted – the personal life of a stand-up comedian. Canoeing the Congo The First Source-to-Sea Descent of the Congo River Phil Harwood ISBN: 978 1 84953 400 0 £8.99 129x198mm 320pp Paperback May 2012 Rights and Sales Territories: World

At 2,922 miles, the Congo is the eighth longest river and the deepest in the world, with a flow rate second only to the Amazon. Ex-Marine Phil Harwood embarked on an epic solo journey from the river’s true source in the highlands of Zambia through war-torn Central Africa. With no outside help whatsoever he faced swamps, waterfalls, man-eating crocodiles, hippos, aggressive snakes and spiders’ webs the size of houses. He collapsed from malaria, and was arrested, intimidated and chased. On one stretch, known as ‘The Abattoir’ for its history of cannibalism and reputation for criminal activity, the four brothers he hired as bodyguards were asked by locals, ‘Why haven’t you cut his throat yet?’ But he also received tremendous hospitality from proud and brave people long forgotten by the Western world, especially friendly riverside fishermen who helped wherever they could on Phil’s exhilarating and terrifying five-month journey. Phil Harwood has worked all over the world as a Royal Marine Commando, expedition leader and outdoor instructor. He is qualified as a mountain leader, canoe and kayak coach, rock-climbing instructor and wilderness emergency medical technician. For this journey he won a fellowship from the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust. He's based in Essex.

■ A historic first source-to-sea descent. ■ A classic boys’-own tale akin to Tim Butcher’s Blood River, with less cultural background but more true adventure, in the vein of Ed Stafford’s Walking the Amazon. ■ Author’s documentary film of the journey, available on his website www.canoeingthecongo. com, won several awards and went on tour in North America with the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival. Media opportunities: Extracts/serialisation. Feature angles: How to prepare for an epic adventure – both physically and mentally; The Congo’s colonial past and current-day political unrest: how much has it changed since C. S. Forester’s The African Queen (1935)? Photos available. Author available for interview.

No Fixed Abode A 21st-Century Tramp Charlie Carroll ISBN: 978 1 84953 415 4 £8.99 129x198mm 288pp Paperback June 2013 Rights and Sales Territories: World

In the summer of 2011, Charlie found the school he taught at could not afford to renew his teaching contract. With no job and no money, but suddenly all the time in the world, he decided to travel from Cornwall to London in a peculiarly old-fashioned, quintessentially English and remarkably cheap way – as a tramp, on foot, sleeping rough. The journey was filled with colour, surprise and danger, and a range of memorable encounters – from Stan who once saved a boy from being raped but whose homelessness stemmed from a paralysing addiction, to I Am, the one-handed Rastafarian who lived in a tent on Parliament Square. With a striking mix of travel and current affairs writing, No Fixed Abode sheds light on a side of the UK few ever see from within. Charlie Carroll is the author of On the Edge (Monday Books, 2010), described by The Telegraph as ‘remarkable’ and serialised in the Daily Mail and The Week. Charlie has spoken on BBC Radio 5Live and local BBC radio stations, and written for The Guardian and The Big Issue. He's based in Cornwall.

8

■ A 21st-century companion to George Orwell’s Down and Out in Paris and London, with parallels to Laurie Lee’s As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning. ■ A fascinating perspective on the ways in which the life of the tramp has evolved. ■ Includes interviews with Mayor of London Boris Johnson and Jeremy Paxman, as well as numerous homeless people and those who work with them, providing a new perspective on how and why people end up on the street, and what can be done to help them. ■ www.charliecarroll.co.uk Media opportunities: Extracts/serialisation. Feature angles: Why do people end up living on the streets of the UK?; A unique insight into homelessness. The author is available for interview.

The Teardrop Island Travels in Sri Lanka in the Footsteps of James Emerson Tennent Cherry Briggs ISBN: 978 1 84953 414 7 £8.99 129x198mm 320pp Paperback June 2013 Rights and Sales Territories: World

Mr Fernando led me into a dark room that was lined with bookcases and smelled of leather and damp. The polished, concrete floor of the library was covered with white jasmine flowers that had blown through the windows during the storm. He began to select from the shelves a collection of disintegrating books. ‘If you are going to read any of them, it should really be this one,’ he said as he passed me two thick volumes, embossed with gold lettering and spotted with damp. The work was simply called Ceylon and was written by an Irishman named Sir James Emerson Tennent, who had been sent to the island in 1845 by Her Majesty’s Government. The Teardrop Island follows in the footsteps of the eccentric Victorian James Emerson Tennent, along a route which takes Cherry to pilgrimage trails, into tea estates and rural regions inhabited by indigenous tribes, as well as through restricted areas of the former warzone.

■ A wryly humorous exploration of a country little written about by western travellers, but just opening up to tourism. ■ History buffs will delight in the colourful character of Tennent (1804–1869), who was a friend of Dickens and became colonial secretary of Ceylon from 1845 to 1850. Media opportunities: Extracts/serialisation. Feature angles: Off the beaten track – a unique insight into rural Sri Lanka; Working outside your comfort zone; How does it feel to live in a former warzone? The author is available for interview.

Cherry Briggs worked as a Biology teacher in Oxfordshire until the cold, grey skies got the better of her and she went in search of warmer climes. Being a keen cyclist she got on her bike and cycled around Asia until she finally settled in Sri Lanka. Much as she loved the island however, her feet soon became itchy and she now lives high up in the Andes in Bogota, Colombia.

Tartly humorous, brimming with romance and full of the essential truths of love and life, this is Austen at her finest.

■ Jane Austen’s writing has timeless appeal to readers young and old.

Manners, Conduct and Accomplishments ‘No one can be really esteemed accomplished who does not greatly surpass what is usually met with. A woman must have a thorough knowledge of music, singing, drawing, dancing, and the modern languages, to deserve the word; and besides all this, she must possess a certain something in her air and manner of walking, the tone of her voice, her address and expressions, or the word will be but half-deserved.’ ‘All this she must possess,’ added Darcy, ‘and to all this she must yet add something more substantial, in the improvement of her mind by extensive reading.’

‘It has sunk him, I cannot say how much it has sunk him in my opinion. So unlike what a man should be! – None of that upright integrity, that strict adherence to truth and principle, that distain of trick and littleness, which a man should display in every transaction of his life.’

■ Bringing together the most sparkling wit and wisdom from all her finest works, this book complements any reader’s Austen collection. Media opportunities: A timeless portrayal of humanity – how Jane Austen’s stories are consistently being reworked in modern media, from Bridget Jones to She’s the Man; Can the words of Jane Austen still guide you in your love life?

Imagine life without the London Underground…Today 150,000 passengers use the Underground every hour. This miscellany explores the way the London Underground is used, not only as transport, but as a location for filming, as a cultural marker, a setting for books, a gallery to showcase new artwork and a forum for discussion. Emily Kearns, now based in Brighton, grew up on the outskirts of London and from a young age regularly roamed the Tube network armed with a travelcard. MIND THE GAP

POST-WAR LONDON

1946: The Metropolitan District introduces a service between High Street Kensington and Kensington Olympia, but plans to only run trains when an exhibition is taking place. 1946-49: The Central line takes shape as it branches out to east London and beyond, introducing services that make use of Great Western and Eastern Railway routes. 1948: Prime Minister Clement Attlee’s vision for Britain comes into play with his programme of nationalisation. Along with the coal, gas and electricity industries, the country’s railways are all taken under state control, and the London Passenger Transport Board’s responsibilities are passed over to the London Transport Executive, part of the British Transport Commission.

1962: Funding is Ànally approved for ‘Route C’, 10 years after the service was originally proposed.

■ Celebrating the London Underground’s 150th anniversary. Media opportunities: Extracts/serialisation. Local interest: London. Feature angles: Ten things you didn’t know about the London Underground; 150 years of the London Underground. The author is available for interview.

1963: The London Transport Executive becomes the London Transport Board and reports directly to the Minister of Transport. Only a few years later, in 1967, London Transport is transferred to the Greater London Council. 1968-69: The Queen opens the Victoria line, and its Àrst services operate between Walthamstow Central and Highbury & Islington. The line is then extended to Warren Street and on to Victoria shortly afterwards. 1971: The Victoria line is extended south to Brixton and, in the same year, a ‘Fleet’ line (which upon inception will be named the Jubilee) is authorised.

1952: This year sees the Àrst aluminium train enter service on the District line. ‘Route C’ is also proposed and will eventually become the Victoria line, but there is to be a long wait for investment. 1957: Upon electriÀcation, the Central line takes over the shuttle service that serves Epping to Ongar from British Rail. 1959: The South Acton branch of the District line closes to the public this year after 79 years. The branch remains in use for goods trains passing through until the mid 1960s. 28

‘Qué es esto? Qué es esto? Es cocaína!’ I couldn’t speak a word of Spanish but I understood the word ‘cocaína’ and knew that I was in a lot of trouble. I should have been paralysed with fear but it didn’t seem real. I was only twenty-three. In 1997, English holidaymaker Terry Daniels found herself unwittingly in the middle of a drug bust involving thousands of pounds’ worth of cocaine being smuggled from Brazil to Spain by her companion. Aer eventually being cleared of any charges she returned home shaken, assuming the nightmare was over – but her troubles had just begun when five years aer her ordeal, Terry awoke one morning to the antiterrorist police breaking down her door. She was arrested and soon aer found herself being extradited to Spain to be tried abroad. In an inexplicably cruel twist of fate, Terry was sentenced to ten years in a maximum-security Spanish prison. Passport to Hell is the hard-hitting account of Terry’s fight for justice, a pageturning memoir of an ordinary woman who survived and eventually triumphed over remarkable misfortune. Terry Daniels now lives in Buckinghamshire, where she undertakes charity work on behalf of Fair Trials International and Prisoners Abroad, and volunteers with ex-offenders and drug abusers. 34

■ Reminiscent of Forget You Had a Daughter, this is a shocking true crime story of being imprisoned abroad. ■ During her time inside, Terry’s story was featured in The Mirror, The Sun, the Daily Mail and The Daily Telegraph. Mob Daughter The Mafia, Sammy ‘the Bull’ Gravano, and Me Karen Gravano with Lisa Pulitzer ISBN: 978 1 84953 356 0 £8.99 129x198mm 256pp Paperback Photographic plate section February 2013 Sales: UK and Commonwealth excluding Canada

It wasn’t until I was twelve years old that I knew for certain that my father was a gangster. Even then, I knew not to ask any questions. Karen Gravano is the daughter of Sammy ‘the Bull’ Gravano, one of the Mafia’s most feared hitmen, with nineteen confessed murders, he was the former Gambino Family underboss and John Gotti’s right-hand man, and the highest-ranking gangster ever to testify against members of his high-profile crime family. To Karen, though, Sammy Gravano was a sometimes elusive but always loving father figure. But by the age of twelve, Karen knew he was a gangster, and as she grew up, while her peers worried about clothes and schoolwork, she was coming face-to-face with crime and murder. She was nineteen when her father turned his back on the Mafia and cooperated with the Feds, which le her family broken and living in fear of retaliation – this is the compelling true account of her life as a Mob daughter. Karen Gravano was born in Brooklyn, New York, and currently resides in Phoenix with her daughter. She is one of the stars of the reality TV show Mob Wives, about her life in the Mafia.

■ To be published simultaneously with the US paperback (St. Martin's Press); their hardback, published in February 2012, had a first print run of 100,000 copies. Publicity began with an interview on Good Morning America. ■ Karen stars in the hit reality TV show Mob Wives and has been featured in several Daily Mail articles; the Express and the Guardian magazines have also expressed interest. ■ A John Gotti biopic will be released in 2013. ■ Author website: www.karengravano.com, Twitter: @KarenGravanoVH1, Facebook: Mob Wives & Karen Gravano. Auschwitz A British POW’s Eyewitness Account Colin Rushton ISBN: 978 1 84953 346 1 £8.99 256pp 129x198mm Paperback February 2013 Rights: World excluding North America

‘compelling’ ‘An extraordinary book’

THE GUARDIAN

■ One of the few true eye-witness accounts of life in Auschwitz.

MILITARY ILLUSTRATED

■ This new edition of the book, previously titled Spectator in Hell (ISBN: 978 1 84024 614 8), is updated with new material. Previous editions have sold 11,000 copies.

In 1942 the young soldier Arthur Dodd was taken prisoner by the German Army and transported to Oswiecim in Polish Upper Silesia. The German name for the place was ‘Auschwitz’: a name now synonymous with man’s darkest hour. Forced to do hard labour, starved and savagely beaten, Arthur thought his life would end in Auschwitz. Determined to go down fighting, he sabotaged Nazi industrial work, risked his life to alleviate the suffering of the Jewish prisoners and aided a partisan group planning a mass break-out. This shocking story sheds new light on the operations at the camp, exposes a hierarchy of prisoner treatment by the SS and presents the largely unknown story of military POWs held there. Colin Rushton is an author and published poet whose work has appeared in newspapers, magazines and anthologies around the world. He has worked in metallurgy and retail and resides with his wife in Cheshire, England.

36

■ Arthur was unable to talk about his experiences at Auschwitz for 36 years. When Jerry Springer asked Richard and Judy what was the most moving interview they had done on their show, they replied ‘Arthur Dodd’. A BBC TV documentary, ‘Auschwitz: The Forgotten Witness’, was made in 2000. Media opportunities: Extracts/serialisation. Feature angles: One man’s fight to survive – a story of bravery and heroism in Auschwitz; How British prisoners of war were subjected to Nazi concentration camps. Author available for interview.

This fascinating full-colour photographic compendium invites you to discover Britain in a new way, through the everyday objects that are part of the fabric of contemporary life in the UK. Containing a wealth of iconic British design staples as well as the treasures of everyday life – from the Mini and the Anglepoise lamp to M&S underwear and the Argos catalogue – this guide is a must-have for anyone who wants to understand British culture from the inside out, with all its idiosyncrasies and quirks. Geoff Hall writes on design-related matters and teaches part time on the Design course at Manchester. He lives in Cheshire. Kamila Kasperowicz came to live in Britain from her native Poland three years ago and is ideally placed to recognise the peculiarities of British people and their everyday culture. She lives in Bury. Anglepoise lamp p The Anglepoise lamp is an iconic conic design which has found its way around the he world, but its origins and design retain uniquely British characteristics. ot by a professional Designed and developed not designer, but by an engineer, er, the Anglepoise was not the product of any coherent erent business-led R&D program. Its “designer” did not even set out to create a new lamp; instead the Anglepoise glepoise was the fruit of a technology in search of an n application which could exploit it. In 1932 an automotive engineer, neer, George Carwardine, ng which could patented a new type of spring retain its position after being ng stretched or compressed. Carwardine owned a company in the west of Engngland which specialised in vehicle suspension systems, but it seems the research that led to the Anglepoise lamp was largely undertaken by him out of curiosity rather than to produce higher performance ce car springs. Aware of basic engineering ineering

principles and also the constant tension principle associated with the human arm, Carwardine spent two years developing what would become the Anglepoise. (Carwardine originally planned to call his light the Equipoise but was unable to register that name).

original Anglepoise light to this day, even though the patent was sold to the Norwegian lighting designer, Jacob Jacobsen in 1937, and Jacobsen went on to create his own variant, the Luxor L–1, which achieved success in its own right.

His plan was that the lamp would be purely for industrial use. Because it could be adjusted to provide a highly focused light he thought it would be ideal for detailed assembly work. In 1934 he licensed the light, but not to a lighting manufacturer.

The Anglepoise’s mechanical appearance, with all its working parts on show, fitted with the stripped down aesthetic of the age, even though it was probably never designed with any particular aesthetic in mind. Not only does it work exceptionally well, providing well directed light, but a big part of its appeal must lie in its resemblance to a human companion; the Anglepoise has a strangely benign appearance, like a hooded monk peeking encouragingly over your shoulder while you work.

Instead the company of Herbert Terry & Sons, a manufacturer based at Redditch in Worcestershire which supplied springs took up its development and marketing. Terry continue to supply variants of the

The Ministry of Thin How Our Obsession with Weight Loss Got Out of Control Emma Woolf ISBN: 978 1 84953 412 3 £8.99 129x198mm 320pp Paperback June 2013 Rights and Sales Territories: World

Losing weight has become the modern woman’s Holy Grail… Everything will be better when we’re thin. In the 21st century, being thin, even more than being rich or happy, sends a clear message of success to the outside world. No wonder then that disordered eating is on the rise and we’re increasingly unhappy with our bodies. The Ministry of Thin takes a controversial, unflinching look at how our desire to lose weight is out of control; at the widespread depression that results, the tyranny of celebrity culture and the dangerous extremes – including drip-diets and cosmetic surgery – to which we will go to be skinny. From those who would like to be a few pounds lighter to those who starve or binge in secret, we are all affected. How did we get to the point where we hate our own bodies, and is it futile to hope that we might one day be able to like ourselves again, just as we are? Emma Woolf, author of An Apple a Day, has become a spokesperson on body image issues and eating disorders since beginning her popular column by the same name in The Times, appearing on BBC2’s Newsnight, BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour and Channel 5’s 5 News. The great-niece of Virginia Woolf, she has contributed to a wide range of newspapers and magazines.

■ Emma will be an investigative presenter on the new series of Supersize vs Superskinny in 2013. ■ A recent UK survey found that one in four women would choose depression, alcoholism and herpes over being overweight. A US study found that one in six women would rather be blind than obese. ■ Emma’s growing media profile makes her the ideal spokesperson for this highly topical subject. She has received thousands of messages from ‘normal’ readers who say, ‘I feel this way too.’ ■ Cuts across all age groups, genders and social backgrounds. Media opportunities: Extracts/serialisation. Feature angles: Why do we feel the need to look a certain way?; Are ultra-slim celebrities making life worse for the rest of us?; How do we keep children fit and healthy without instilling disordered eating? Many of us are kept up at night worrying that we won’t get the recommended eight hours of sleep that we need to function well. However, the worry is the damaging part of this scenario. Studies have shown that most people will have no problem functioning with six or seven hours’ sleep, and further, that if you have lost sleep, you only need to catch up with about a third of the lost time to be back to normal, so this would often mean simply a 30 minute lie-in at the weekend if you went to bed an hour and a half late one night during the week.

Welcome to our new season Summersdale’s spring catalogue is brimming with exciting new titles. Our gorgeous gi books will help you put your message across in style, whether it’s I Love You, Good Luck, Thank You, or even Cheer Up (It Could Be Worse), while the You’ve Still Got It series is perfect for celebrating a milestone birthday. Fred Basset: Celebrating 50 Years will tickle your funny bone, and pet lovers will LOL at The More I See of Men, The More I Love My Cat and My Dog, while The Secret Life of Cats shows exactly what our whiskered friends get up to behind our backs. Francophiles are spoilt for choice in our travel section with Samantha Brick’s Head Over Heels in France and Ian Moore’s À la Mod. Moving to warmer climes we join (our very own) Jennifer Barclay Falling in Honey in Greece, while the more adventurous can try Canoeing the Congo with Phil Harwood. For a staycation with a difference, we have Phoebe Smith’s Extreme Sleeps and Charlie Carroll’s tramp from Cornwall to London in No Fixed Abode. Our general interest list provides a rich mix, with a gritty insight into life’s underbelly in both Mob Daughter, written by the star of America’s Mob Wives, and Passport to Hell, and a British POW’s heart-rending eyewitness account of Auschwitz. Mark Cossey’s Trying reveals the role played by loose pants and whale music in the quest for a baby, Oscar the Bionic Cat introduces a very plucky feline and Emma Woolf’s second book The Ministry of Thin turns an unflinching gaze on the issues of body-image and appearance. Our popular 50 Things health series will help you to Manage Stress at Work, Improve Self-Esteem, and Boost Your Confidence. We also have more help on hand to Free Your Back! with gentle exercises based on the Alexander Technique, as well as 50 Tips to Help you Sleep Well and De-Stress. We hope you enjoy our new catalogue and we extend our thanks to all the writers and artists, the press and the trade and everyone else who helps make Summersdale’s books very special.
