Cicero remarked that old age is a strange business. No one wants to miss it, he said, and everyone complains about it when they get there. Not I, though.
‘he writes with a dry wit which had me laughing out loud’ THE OXFORD TIMES
Old age comes to us all, and Enfield wittily advises on how to survive its trickier obstacles, not least the people who suggest you must ‘do something’. One of the great delights of the golden years is doing less – from giving up DIY and ambition to not inviting people to dinner. In these elegantly entertaining essays, Enfield guides those entering their finer years on how to make the most of old age.
■ To be published just aer Edward’s 80th birthday.

■ In the tradition of icanhascheezburger.com, petswhowanttokillthemselves.com, Grandma’s Dead and Pets with Tourette’s, When Cats Turn Bad has mass appeal.
Combining photos of the coolest cats with captions that reveal their inner wickedness, When Cats Turn Bad shows our furry friends are no pussies.

Lye: My ears, companion and best friend
My ears, companion and best friend
Life took a turn for the worse for poor Nicola Willis when she became severely deaf, but her canine companion has given her the confidence to enjoy life again and has been at her side in times of need…
20
“
“
When I became deaf I withdrew into myself; became depressed and lost all confidence. What really upset me was that I became reliant on other people : I had lost my independence. I stayed in my house, but even that was awful as I just couldn’t hear even simple sounds. I was sinking fast.
“
When Lye came back to me having been trained, everything changed. Friends started to call on me again, knowing that not only would the front door be opened, but on the other side of the door would be two very happy individuals. It was like the light was shining again. My depression was lifting.
“
Lye:
She decided to apply for a hearing dog and was delighted when her own 14-month Cavalier King Charles spaniel, Lye, was assessed by the charity Hearing Dogs for Deaf People and accepted for training. The pair were separated for a difficult four months while Lye was put through her paces at training school, where she learned how to react to various household sounds including the telephone, doorbell, cooker timer and the ‘call’ (an instruction other people can give to Lye asking her to fetch Nicola) as well as the danger sounds of the smoke alarm and fire bell. In July 2005 they were reunited, this time with Lye in her smart, burgundy hearing dog working jacket. Since having Lye as a hearing dog, Nicola’s life has changed dramatically.
But Lye’s dedication to Nicola didn’t stop there. In 2008 Lye acted above and beyond the call of duty twice. The first time was on an outing to the shops; Nicola was recovering from a damaged knee at the time and was using crutches.
“
We were taking a short cut through an alleyway when I fell over, and I just lay on the ground, cold, scared and in pain – I couldn’t get up. To my surprise

Summersdale: Books You’ll Love, with Something For Everyone Welcome to Summersdale! We create entertaining and informative books that people will love, making them widely available at affordable prices. Over the last three years our output and turnover has increased threefold and our gi and humour books alone have sold over one and a half million copies worldwide, with rights to various titles sold in 37 countries. This season has our strongest range of humour yet, with fun and fresh approaches to popular themes as well as quirky and original ideas – something to put a smile on everyone’s face. Making a debut is our gorgeous new gi series Occasions, which combines beautiful design with heart-warming words and photographs. It’s also exciting to have classic pooch Fred Basset joining our list. We’re well known for amusing and inspiring travel writing by authors with great stories to tell, and our latest catalogue features perfect holiday reading on France, Mallorca and Thailand to appeal to armchair travellers and active adventurers alike. Summersdale had a great start to 2009, when we won the IPG E-Publishing Award, were shortlisted for the IPG International Achievement of the Year Award and were a finalist in the Fast Growth Awards for Product Business of the Year. We hope that you enjoy our new catalogue and would like to say a big THANK YOU to all the booksellers and journalists, agents and reps for your continued support!
