We have now been trading as an independent publisher for 23 years, growing from strength to strength every year. Our continued investment in PR allows us to punch above our weight, attaining outstanding media coverage for our books and authors in mainstream national press. With a backlist of some 600 titles we currently produce a diverse range of over a hundred thought-provoking and entertaining reads across Gi and Humour, Travel, General Interest and Self-Help. This season brings a very strong list of titles with something for everyone, from charming gis for a special occasion to cheeky little presents to make you say, ‘OMG!’ We bring fresh approaches to popular themes, taking a humorous look at age, sport, jokes and slang, whilst our photographic celebrations of cats and dogs are both beautiful and upliing. If quizzes are your thing, our new range of Puzzlers are just the ticket and, in the wake of post-Olympic sport interest, our miscellanies of cycling and running provide inspiration for even armchair athletes. This is my brother Louis.’ Aer one particularly bad day at work, advertising executive and confirmed city girl Melanie Jones decides to give up her old life in search of something new and simpler in South West France. Alone in Antarctica Felicity Aston ISBN: 978 1 84953 432 1 £8.99 129x198mm 320pp Paperback Colour plates August 2013 Rights and Sales Territories: World
What would it feel like to be out there alone in that empty vastness? Only three people in the world have crossed Antarctica alone. The first two were men and both Norwegian. At the age of 34, British woman Felicity Aston became the third – and unlike her predecessors, she didn’t use kites or parasails to assist her. Facing desperate weather, she woke every morning believing she could not face another day as the expedition became a race against time to reach the coast before the last flight out. This gripping and inspirational account of personal endurance shows what you can achieve when you grit your teeth and decide just to get through today in one piece. Felicity Aston has spent over a decade travelling, working and living all over the Polar Regions. In 2009 she led the most international team of women ever to ski to the South Pole; this became the subject of her first book, Call of the White (ISBN: 978 1 84953 134 4), a finalist in the Banff Mountain Book Competition in 2011. Outside Magazine, the leading adventure-travel magazine in the US, named her one of their 2012 Adventurers of the Year. She is based in Margate, Kent.
‘True inspiration to venture beyond your comfort zone’ WANDERLUST ■ Felicity’s achievement was reported around the globe: the volume and breadth of media interest indicates the human interest value of the story. ■ A unique account of an emotional and psychological journey. ■ With the approaching centenary of Shackleton’s ‘Endurance’ expedition in 2014, this is an ideal time for a fresh, modern perspective on Antarctic exploration for a new generation. ■ www.felicityaston.co.uk Media opportunities: Extracts/serialisation. Have you heard of the country whose schools have banned the use of egg boxes and loo rolls in cra lessons as they pose a health risk (they could be carrying salmonella, don’t you know), and removed pear trees from a picturesque lane because they were too dangerous? No? It’s Britain! This laugh-out-loud collection of ludicrous laws, money-wasting council schemes and ridiculous red tape reveals how: ■ A city council removed the conkers from dozens of horse chestnut trees, fearing for the safety of tree climbers searching for the ultimate sixer.
■ Previous edition (published as Completely Conkers, ISBN: 978 1 84953 004 0) has sold 10,000 copies. ■ A humorous look at an evergreen topic which will appeal to fans of More Than My Job’s Worth, An Utterly Exasperated History of Modern Britain and Is It Just Me or is Everything Shit?
■ Aer falling in the prison shower, a career criminal was compensated £248,000, including a substantial amount ‘for lost earnings’. If you find yourself grimacing at the stupidity of health and safety gone mad you’ll love this collection of idiotic interventions and ridiculous rules that have come into play to keep us from harm. WARNING: This book should only be used by those trained in liing books and turning pages. Read with caution and at your own risk. Will Jackson divides his time between having barbecues without a licence and putting the wrong sort of rubbish in his bins. The Birdwatcher’s Year Richard Williamson ISBN: 978 1 84953 436 9 £9.99 116x182mm 160pp Hardback August 2013 Rights and Sales Territories: World
This charming and practical handbook is bursting with tips, facts and folklore to guide you through the birdwatching year. Find out how to identify birds by sight or song, everything you need to know about their behaviour, habitats and breeding and migration habits, and tips for encouraging birds into your garden. Also includes handy diary pages for making your own notes each month. A must-have for any eager birdwatcher. Richard Williamson was for 30 years the manager of Kingley Vale National Nature Reserve in West Sussex and has an unparalleled knowledge of South Downs wildlife and lore. He is the author of 52 Favourite West Sussex Walks (ISBN: 978 1 84953 233 4). October
October OCTOBER is a month of change – at this time of year mass migrations are taking place, and the coastal areas of Britain become the major crossroads for birds travelling across north-west Europe. The autumn harvest also gives resident birds the chance to replenish themselves and prepare for winter. THIS TIME OF YEAR is particularly good for seawatching, as you should be able to catch a glimpse of winter migrants arriving and/or summer migrants leaving, as well as the regular birding sights to be found on the coast, if you can brave the cold weather to watch them. A telescope, gloves, thick hat and windproof jacket are essential to get the most out of your trip. Herring gulls, fulmar petrels and cormorants drift, glide and circle around cliffs and headlands, but further out to sea you should be able to spot more exotic birds, such as the guillemot or the razorbill, dipping and rising above the troughs of the waves. Manx shearwaters can sometimes be spotted near the horizon, gliding just above the surface of the water. They can be identified by their dark backs and pale undersides. 94
CHAFFINCHES are also plentiful at this time of year, as they congregate at the end of their breeding season. However, their numbers are augmented by Scandinavian birds, which can be distinguished from our native chaffinches by a few distinctive differences in behaviour. The Scandinavian birds flock in enormous numbers across the Channel, divided into female and male groups. Before making their sea crossing to Ireland, you can see field after field full of chaffinches and these continental birds waiting and preparing for the next leg of their journey. ACORNS ARE PLENTIFUL in mid-October, and this is the peak time for Marsh-tits, coal-tits, blue-tits, rooks, woodpigeons and jays to store up food for the winter. The jays are by far the most efficient at this job, and they can be spotted in woods across the country, a flash of their white rump repeatedly catching the eye as they dart around to collect their bounty. According to some reports, jays in any one locality can be responsible for moving well over 100,000 acorns in a season. Their symbiotic relationship with the oak trees is so perfectly developed that they even have a specially widened throat to accommodate the large fruits, and their distribution of such a large number of acorns ensures a crop of pioneer seedlings in the next year.
Praise for 52 Favourite West Sussex Walks: ‘If you fancy a walk… all you need is this great pocket guide… there really is fun for all the family’ PRIMARY TIMES ‘His friendly, folksy style encourages the walker to revel in the journey and sights to be seen’ SUSSEX LIFE magazine ■ Ideally sized to fit into a pocket or small bag for bird-watching trips. ■ Sections for recording your own notes make this a practical and useful book that will be referred to year aer year. Media opportunities: Extracts/serialisation. Feature angles: Richard’s top tips for birds you can see this month; Advice for new twitchers, young and old. Author is available for interview.

If you feel that today is nothing special:
If you are angry with someone:
If you are ill in bed:
To The Sun-Dial
from Think Gently of the Erring
In the Hospital
Thou silent herald of Time’s silent flight!
Think gently of the erring:
Because on the branch that is tapping my pane
Say, could’st thou speak, what warning voice
Ye know not of the power
were thine?
With which the dark temptation came
Shade, who canst only show how others shine!
In some unguarded hour.
Dark, sullen witness of resplendent light
Ye may not know how earnestly
In day’s broad glare, and when the moontide bright
They struggled, or how well,
Of laughing fortune sheds the ray divine,
Until the hour of weakness came
Thy ready favors cheer us – but decline
HEALTH AND SICKNESS
And sadly thus they fell.
The clouds of morning and the gloom of night.
A sun-wakened leaf-bud, uncurled, Is bursting its rusty brown sheathing in twain, I know there is Spring in the world. Because through the sky-patch whose azure and white My window frames all the day long, A yellow-bird dips for an instant of flight, I know there is Song.
Yet are thy counsels faithful, just, and wise;
Speak gently to the erring:
They bid us seize the moments as they pass–
For is it not enough
Snatch the retrieveless sunbeam as it flies,
That innocence and peace have gone,
Where creep the dull hours, leaden-shod,
Without thy censure rough?
Compassion and Tenderness aid me, I know
Nor lose one sand of life’s revolving glass– Aspiring still, with energy sublime,
It sure must be a weary lot,
By virtuous deeds to give eternity to Time.
That sin-stained heart to bear,
There is God. Arthur Guiterman
And those who share a happier fate John Quincy Adams
Because even here in this Mansion of Woe
Their chidings well may spare. William Shakespeare

This handsome photographic collection of the most eye-catching and enchanting canines, packed with witty quotes and heart-warming poems, is guaranteed to captivate and charm anybody who has ever known the companionship of a dog. I'm a lean dog, a keen dog, a wild dog, and lone ; I'm a rough dog, a tough dog, hunting on my own ; I'm a bad dog, a mad dog, teasing silly sheep ; I love to sit and bay the moon, to keep fat souls from sleep. I'll never be a lap dog, licking dirty feet, A sleek dog, a meek dog, cringing for my meat, Not for me the fireside, the well-filled plate, But shut door, and sharp stone, and cuff and kick, and hate. Buy a pup and your money will buy Love unflinching that cannot lie-Perfect passsion and worship fed By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head. Britain’s Worst Walks Travels around the UK’s Gloriously Grim Backwaters Ben Hind ISBN: 978 1 84953 455 0 £8.99 146x146mm 112pp Hardback Black and white maps and photographs September 2013 Rights and Sales Territories: World
‘At the end of Southend Pier, turn around and walk back to the shore. You will soon notice that the return journey is not as nice because you have to look at Southend.’ From Southend to Skegness via slums, sewage works and sandless beaches, this unique walking guide takes a look at some of the most overlooked routes in the UK. They may not be popular, they may not be pretty, but they’re all part of the great British landscape – whether we like it or not.
■ Will appeal to fans of Molvania and the Crap Towns series ■ A tongue-in-cheek celebration of Britain, appealing to cynics and patriots alike ■ Features maps and full-colour photographs of the walking routes
Ben Hind is editor of the Scottish Sunday Express. He is a keen hillwalker, who is currently attempting to complete the historic county tops of Scotland and England. He honestly loves all of Britain, even the scruffy bits. Holmfirth is one of those picturesque commuter villages for people who are happy to work in the nearby cities but would rather sell their firstborn into slavery than actually live there. However, this is not its only claim to infamy. ‘Last of the Summer Wine’ was filmed hereabouts for 37 years, transforming the area into one of the biggest tourist attractions in Yorkshire.
Holmfirth - Paths of the Summer Whine
• Length – 37 years (1973-2010) • Difficulty – Hip replacement • Likelihood of getting an erection at the thought of a mature lady in wrinkled nylons – Fair to middlin’ • Score – Six chuffin’ ferrets out of ten

Pass the Slipper
GAMES PS ROU FOR G Sardines No of players required: Four or more What you will need: The ability to squeeze into tight spaces The simple part: It^s a case of the more the merrier with sardines. One player hides while the others count to 50. The players then split up to look for the hider and, when they find them, they must join them in their hiding place until all the players but one are crammed in!

Wink Murder
The Post-It Game
Knock someone out with that killer look
When the answer is almost staring you in the face
No of players required: Five or more Aim of the game: To ]kill^ all other players without being found out
No of players required: Six or more What you will need: Traditionally a slipper, but any small object will do
No of players required: Two or more Aim of the game: To guess the name of the famous person written on a Post-It attached to your forehead
How to start: From a pack of cards, take as many cards as there are players and make sure one is an ace. Each player needs to pick a card; whoever gets the ace is the murderer and the rest are detectives.
How to start: Each player should write the name of a famous person on a Post-It and stick it to the forehead of the player to their left.
The simple part: The murderer must wink at players individually to ]kill^ them, without the other players noticing. Once a player has been winked at, they can perform as dramatic and noisy a death as they so choose. Whoever accuses the murderer correctly wins a point and the overall winner is the player with the most points. This game can go on for as long as you like and the more players involved the more fun it is.
The simple part: Players then take it in turns to ask questions about the name on their own forehead. Each question should command a yes or no answer and if the answer is yes the player may continue asking questions; as soon as the answer is no the player^s turn is over and it^s the next person^s turn to ask questions. The player to guess correctly first wins a point, but it is fun to keep playing until everyone has guessed the name attached to their forehead.
23
22
The simple part: Select one player to sit in the middle of a circle with their eyes closed, while the other players pass an object to each other behind their backs. When the player in the middle opens their eyes, the passing stops and they must guess who has the object. If they guess correctly, they swap places with the holder and the game continues.
Blind Man's Buff No of players required: Four or more What you will need: A blindfold The simple part: This one may require breakables to be hidden out of reach. One player should be blindfolded, while the others scatter around the room and the ]blind^ player tries to catch them. Once caught, the blindfolded player must guess who they have taken prisoner. If they guess correctly they can then swap places.

Wanksy is the unheralded genius behind some of the most iconic urban images of our time: the seminal ‘cock and balls’, the timeless ‘Leroy loves Sarah’, the devastating brevity of ‘sod’ and countless other masterpieces. For the first time, this book collects Wanksy’s most significant works to date together with expert critiques that analyse and illuminate their hidden depths. You’ll never look at a crudely drawn penis in the same way again. Marc Blakewill and James Harris have been a writing partnership for 12 years. Based in London, they have written for a wide range of TV and radio comedy shows such as Horrible Histories (BBC1), Russell Howard’s Good News (BBC3), and Hudd and Quantick’s Global Village (Radio 2). This is their first book.
You could say this was bloody childish. Or you could say it was a study in genetics. Think on it. From XX to XY we are but a letter away from being a different sex. And so with just one ‘P’, Wanksy transforms the feminine (Jessica) Ennis to the strappingly masculine Pennis.
“

Media opportunities: Extracts/serialisation. Feature angles: Where will you find the UK’s worst graffiti?; Top ten worst pieces of wall art. Photos available.

Late Announcements 1 Travel 4 General Interest 8 Health 14 Gi & Humour 16 Full Stocklist 49 Welcome to Summersdale! We have now been trading as an independent publisher for 23 years, growing from strength to strength every year. The Bookseller ranked us within its Top 10 Risers for 2012 in a year that saw our revenues grow by 7% within nontraditional high street retail chains and independent online gi retailers, and our export sales all around the globe more than double. On a more serious note, we launch a new series of self-help books with Understanding and Dealing with Stroke and Understanding and Dealing with Depression. We’d like to extend our many thanks to all the writers and artists, the press and trade and everyone else who helps make Summersdale’s books so special. The Summersdale Team
