Resilience How to Turn Adversity into Strength
Josh Floyd
ISBN: 978 1 78685 966 2 £6.99 136x101mm 160pp Hardback July 2019 Rights and Sales Territories: World
Life’s journey isn’t always a walk in the park but there are ways of forging your own path. This pocket-sized book of simple but effective tools and tips will help you to build your inner reserves and bounce back from adversity stronger than ever.
Key Selling Points: • This little book of tips and quotations will encourage you to grow stronger and become more able to deal with the adversities of life. • The Little Book of Resilience (ISBN: 9781849538305) has sold over 9,000 copies worldwide.
If at first you don’t succeed... It is continuous effort – not talent or intelligence – that holds the key to success in life. Successful people understand this. As a result, they are actionoriented. Of course, sometimes it makes sense to quit, but don’t make the mistake of giving up too early. Walt Disney’s first animation company went bankrupt and he was

reputedly turned down 302 times before he got financing for creating Disneyland. Equally, J. K. Rowling was living on the breadline before she found success with Harry Potter, but only after 12 publishers rejected her manuscript. Ask yourself, are you looking for a quick fix? Do you have a tendency to give up when things get tough? Or do you persevere and keep trying to find a way to make things work? Commit to keep going until you reach your goal.
You can’t turn back the clock, but you can wind it up again. If you’re going through hell, keep going.

Spirituality Guidance for a Better Life
Sophie Golding
ISBN: 978 1 78685 969 3 £12.99 195x149mm 192pp Hardback July 2019 Rights and Sales Territories: World
This stunning book will help you on your spiritual journey by introducing you to traditions, philosophies and practices which have the power to open your heart and broaden your mind. Packed with tips on how to practise spirituality in your everyday life, this book provides the stepping stones to a new sense of peace and happiness.
Key Selling Points: • This book includes techniques and exercises to help you work on your spiritual development. • An accessible introduction to an increasingly popular topic, with a contemporary design which will appeal to a wide audience. • Similar to The Little Book of Spirituality (ISBN: 9781849537131), which has sold over 11,000 copies. GET TO KNOW YOUR SPIRITUAL SELF Spirituality is a personal journey where we try to establish and nurture a connection with something greater than ourselves. To do this, we must first look to ourselves: at our beliefs, our values and our actions. What could you change or improve upon? Based on your life to date, create an honest personal moral inventory. Explore your character traits, ideals and beliefs, especially around the themes of fairness, integrity and love, and acknowledge your strengths as well as your weaknesses. The following questions will help you discover your core values and create your moral inventory:
Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.
Modern paganism
Aristotle
•
What are my positive and negative qualities?
•
Do I have a belief system?
•
Are there outstanding apologies or amends I need to make that would give me greater peace of mind? If there are but this is not possible, can I forgive myself and move on in the certain knowledge that I will not repeat this behaviour?
•
What resentments am I carrying that it would benefit me to let go?
Paganism in general refers to the religious traditions of a country’s indigenous population and is an umbrella term for many ancient spiritual beliefs, but here in the West paganism refers to a more specific spiritual path. Modern pagans, such as Druids or Wiccans, share a deep reverence for nature, and an understanding that all life is connected and should be respected. Many also choose to follow an eco-friendly lifestyle. Modern pagans observe the cycle of the seasons, the moon and life itself (from birth to death), and eight annual festivals are celebrated throughout the year. These mark the ‘turn of the wheel’ and tie in to the natural cycles of the planet. They include the equinoxes, solstices and four additional seasonal festivals. Pagans feel that our lives can be lived in harmony with these changes; for example, that it is beneficial to plan new projects in the spring.
Helping you tune into a more spiritual mindset, a truthful moral inventory provides a sound basis from which to begin your journey to enlightenment.
12
engage with nature Pagans use the different elements – earth, water, air and fire – to enhance various characteristics in their lives. If you feel unsettled, try grounding yourself by walking barefoot on the grass or sand. To release pent-up emotions, soak in a warm bath or spend time near water. Sharpen your thinking by getting out and about on a blustery day and breathing in the fresh air. Use candlelight and fire to help your intuition and passions to burn more brightly. Connect with the cycle of the seasons by making a fresh start in the spring and sowing the seeds of new projects for the year ahead. Soak in the warmth of the sun’s rays in the summer and re-energise. At harvest time, give thanks for the good things in your life. And as the trees lose their leaves in winter, take stock of your life and shed any possessions or habits that are no longer useful to you.

Later life brings many advantages. There are wonderful role models that exemplify how active, happy, healthy and purposeful older people can be, even in the face of adversity. Read about them. And become one yourself.
(See: We’re Living Longer, page 12, Step (6) Be Grateful, It’s Never Too Late, page 34 and Want to Know More? page 65).
Old age is one of the most wonderful, sensational, glorious, fantastic, exciting parts of your whole life.
The evidence is clear. Loneliness (that is, feeling sad because you do not have the social contact you’d like) is dangerous – it increases the risk of many diseases affecting physical and mental health. A study has shown it is as bad as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. It is as big a killer as obesity, increasing the risk of premature death by about a third.
Human connection lies at the heart of human wellbeing. At the end of our lives, we usually realise (if we haven’t already) that it is the people we care about that matter most, not our career or possessions.
Being sociable and having good friends and family we can count on not only improves our health and wellbeing but protects our brains, keeping our memory and cognitive function sharper and for longer. Quality, not quantity, is what matters.
But as we age many transitions and changes, often outside our control, can leave us isolated or lonely. For example, the loss of friends or family, giving up work and colleagues, caring responsibilities, disability, physical or mental health conditions (which can reduce mobility, independence or motivation), transport difficulties, community facilities closing, living alone, moving away from those we know, grown up children leading busy lives or out of reach, and digital exclusion. Such events can make it difficult to stay socially active, and make new friends.
A 75-year-long study that followed over 700 men discovered it was good relationships that keep us happier, healthier and living longer. Friends and family are also an important source of support, especially in tough times, helping increase our resilience. Connecting with others may therefore be the most important thing you do in life. And everyone can do it with knowledge, courage and help, if required.
According to many experts, all ages are now suffering from a ‘loneliness epidemic’.
Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live. Jim Rohn

Focusing our attention on the naturally relaxing sensations of exhalation can offer an anchor in our bodies when the outside world seems overwhelming.
FEEL YOURSELF RISE WITH THE IN-BREATH Inhaling oxygen invogorates and energises us. Breathing deep into the belly naturally lifts our posture and with it our mood.
Take a long, slow inhale, feeling your abdomen relax as you breathe into the belly. As you calmly exhale, connect this ship to its anchor, observing the naturally relaxing sensations of the exhalation as you do so. Notice any emotional effects of this action.

Breathe out smoothly. Notice the natural pause at the end of your exhalation.
For five successive exhalations, draw a line from the starting circle to the anchor. Match the speed of your pencil to your exhalation as it unfolds. Take as long to draw the line as it takes to exhale.
Upon inhaling, slowly connect this girl’s line to her kite as it floats. Feel your body expand and lift from your belly to your upper chest as you do so.
To explore further, search your body for the naturally relaxing sensations of the breath, feeling your limbs grow heavy as you exhale. Allow this heaviness to ground you, wherever your body is in contact with the floor or chair.

Have you ever caught a whiff of a particular scent, like your mum’s perfume perhaps, and been instantly transported to a vivid memory? That’s because smells are strongly associated with emotion in our brains through the limbic system. You can use this to your advantage by filling your home with comforting aromas which instantly make you feel more relaxed. Look for scented candles or diffusers with lavender or jasmine as these fragrances are both calming. If you want an energising boost in the morning, try one with citrus notes. Experiment with different scents and rotate them so you don’t become desensitised to them.

When starting out on a journey of self-improvement, it can be hard to see what the end result will be. It is easy to become bogged down in the ‘what ifs’ a situation brings to mind, and this is where visualisation can help. Sitting in a comfortable chair, in a relaxed position, close your eyes and begin to focus on your breathing. There is no need to breathe more slowly, just pay attention to your natural breathing patterns. Next, start to build a picture in your head of how a more confident you would look and act. Where are you? Who is with you? Notice the details and enjoy the feeling of confidence from within. While you are working on building your confidence, take this mental image with you and see it as something to aspire to.

OAK Other Names for Oak: Cups and Ladles, Cups and Saucers, Gospel Oak, Ackeron
HOW TO IDENTIFY: This well-loved deciduous tree can grow to over 30 metres tall. It has a broad-spreading crown to allow light to fall on the woodland floor below. The lobed leaves burst into life in bunches around May, followed by long yellow catkins that blow in the breeze, which distributes its pollen. Acorn fruits follow the catkins, which ripen to a nutty brown and fall to the ground in the autumn when they are gathered by hungry squirrels and other hedgerow dwellers. HISTORY: The oak is such an important tree in shaping Britain’s history. Prized for its strength and durability, it was, and still is, used in the construction of houses, churches 16
and ships – up until the middle of the nineteenth century all ships for the Royal Navy were constructed from oak, giving rise to the tree’s nickname of ‘the wooden walls of old England’. Historically, oak has been used to make barrels to store wine and spirits, and the bark was an essential ingredient in the leather-tanning industry. Gospel oaks were planted to mark parish borders; the custom of ‘beating the bounds’ is still carried out on Ascension Day. Parishioners walk the boundaries of the parish, possibly beating them with willow sticks, to remind everyone of their location and ensure that a neighbouring parish hasn’t acquired some of their land.

If you must cut down an oak, however, you can protect yourself by carrying a bible in your pocket and singing psalms as you work. Dreaming of oak trees foretells of a long and wealthy life. Float two acorn cups on water to predict if your love affair will be long-lasting. If the acorn cups drift together, you will be married, but if they float apart… Cords for window blinds were customarily carved into the shape of acorns to prevent lightning from entering through the window, as it was believed that oak trees were never struck by lightning. A protective amulet made by binding two equal-sized pieces of oak together with red cord to form a cross was suspended in the house to protect the occupants from evil.

Using a hot glue gun, secure a wick into the bottom of each acorn cup, snipping off any excess that pokes out too far over the top.

Using a double boiler with water in the bottom, carefully melt the beeswax.
Dried herbs and flowers
Pour melted wax to the top of the acorn cup using a teaspoon – be careful, it’s hot! The wax will set fairly quickly but you can push each cup into an old piece of polystyrene to keep it upright as the wax cools.
MEDICINE: The oak played
a significant role in symbolic healing, especially in cases of fever. The patient was taken to a crossroads where an oak was growing; the illness could then be ‘transferred’ into the oak tree. A lock of the patient’s hair was nailed to the trunk, transferring the fever into the tree. Grated acorn in white wine is said to relieve ‘the stitch’ and a decoction of the

Save the World There is No Planet B: Things You Can Do Right Now to Save Our Planet
Louise Bradford
ISBN: 978 1 78783 034 9 £6.99 148x105mm 176pp Paperback February 2019 Rights and Sales Territories: World
There is little doubt that our beautiful planet is now under huge threat. We need to take action before it’s too late, and we can all do our bit to help. This guide is full of simple tips we can all incorporate into our daily lives, and will demonstrate how small eco-friendly changes can have a huge positive effect on the world around us. Louise Bradford is a writer who lives in Sussex with her husband, two children and their dog. She writes social commentary about lifestyle, motherhood and women’s issues. She enjoys yoga, cooking vegetables and vintage shopping.
Key Selling Points: • This pocket-sized book encourages and guides individuals to do their bit to reduce their impact on Planet Earth and is easy to take on the go, so you can dip in and out of it wherever you are. SAVE THE WORLD THERE IS NO PLANET B
INTRODUCTION Overwhelming evidence suggests that our planet is under unprecedented threat. Our weather is unpredictable and can be dangerous to human life; there are flash floods and polarities of heat and cold. Plastic litter can be seen every day, on our beaches, in our rivers and tangled in plants and trees; more worrying still, the microplastics that fill our seas are harming our wildlife, upsetting the delicate balance of sensitive ecosystems, and entering our food chain. What we produce for our own convenience is not rotting away when or magically disappearing when it is no longer needed – it is clogging up our ecology and harming all the living things that share this planet. And all the other ways that human activity is choking our planet – carbon emissions, unsustainable foresting and intensive agriculture for starters – are now becoming abundantly clear. What we believed about the environmental impact of human life as little as a decade ago has now changed, and we now face a doubly complex issue. Firstly, there is the need to clean up the mess that’s already been
made; to recognise and deal with the pollution that already exists. Secondly, there is an increasing urgency to change how we act, so the problem does not worsen; to stop further thoughtless and irresponsible human actions. This requires clever and innovative thinking, which can feel unattainable and as if it might disrupt our established ways of living, ones which until now, we took for granted. But change is possible. Saving the planet can sound like a daunting task; something that may feel too large and too difficult to fix. Yes, governments and corporations need to do their bit, but if we are to save the planet, we must all take action and we should not underestimate the impact that individual changes can take. It’s time to stop and think, and then take action. This book is here to empower you to make changes, small and large, both in your attitudes and in your actions. Some of the ideas within are simple changes that take seconds and will benefit you, and the environment, for years to come; others are ongoing things that need to be repeated and integrated into our lifestyle to continue to reap the rewards. But the best thing to do is to begin. What if you were to start somewhere? What if everyone did the same? Changing your personal
6
Home The word ‘ecology’ derives from the Greek word ‘oikos’ meaning ‘house, home or place to live’ so it is apt to start with some eco-friendly actions that you could utilise in the home. The home is a place where environmental endeavours can extend from a few simple actions to a wider lifestyle choice. It’s your decision what is done in your own home, and how far you want to change, but this chapter should give you some simple ideas on where to start.
One of the easiest ways to start your eco-friendly journey is by tackling inefficient or unnecessary energy use. The burning of gas, oil and coal for heat and electricity is the largest single source of global greenhouse gas emissions, so the key to reducing the burden of climate change is to switch to green alternatives or find ways to reduce our energy use, or make it more efficient.
Light Bulbs Energy efficient lightbulbs are now commonplace, with most countries banning the use of incandescent ones. If you haven’t already got energy-efficient lightbulbs installed, switch to compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) or light emitting diodes (LEDs) which typically use about 25%-80% less energy than traditional incandescents.

SAVOUR THE PRESENT MOMENT Most of us rush through the day lost in our thoughts – anguishing over the past, fretting over the future or mentally beating ourselves up. Not only is this constant noisy chatter draining, but it means we’re never fully living in the present moment. We’re always somewhere else! Eckhart Tolle, author of The Power of Now, says, ‘Most people treat the present moment as if it were an obstacle that they need to overcome.’ He sees this as an insane way to live.
The Little Book of Mindfulness_SAMPLE PAGES.indd 2-3
22
An effective way to switch off our mental chatter is to practise mindfulness, also known as presentmoment awareness. Simply pause and be aware of what you can see, hear, smell and feel. You might find it easiest to focus on one sensation at first, such as touch – a soft breeze against your skin, the ground beneath your feet, your clothes against your body. Try this during everyday activities such as walking to work, doing the washing-up or eating dinner. Short bursts of present moment awareness throughout the day can help you feel grounded and calm.

HOW CRYSTALS WORK
Crystals are living beings at the beginning of creation.
the love stone
It can seem like a stretch of the imagination to believe that a humble crystal has the ability to transform your energy levels, help you to find love or aid healing. Crystals are naturally occurring and they contain piezoelectric and pyroelectric properties that cause them to vibrate with energy. They are also conductors of heat and electricity. This ability to focus energy means that crystals are used in many industries from lasers to watch movements. It is this innate and perpetual lifeenhancing energy that has led to crystals being used for centuries for medicinal purposes, as recorded in the Bible and Chinese medical texts. We all emit vibrations – high when we’re stressed or low when we’re feeling upset. Crystals have the effect of balancing the vibrations in the body or in the environment and encourage a renewed sense of calm and positivity.
Birthstone for January and May Source – Madagascar, India, Japan, Brazil, South Africa and USA Rose quartz has a gentle blush-pink colour and is known as the crystal for matters of the heart. It emits powerful, nurturing vibrations to your heart chakra, which can be used to boost self-love, emotional balance, friendship and romance. It helps to lower stress levels and dissipate feelings of resentment, upset and jealousy.
Place small pieces of quartz throughout your home and workplace to help disperse negative energies and promote feelings of joy and togetherness.
Wear a rose quartz pendant to ease stress and promote calm.

The rose quartz stone can be used as part of a daily meditation. Try this simple exercise to promote instant calm. Think of a positive word to use as your mantra for this meditation. It could be something like ‘peace’ or ‘happy’ or ‘calm’. Sit on the floor with your legs crossed loosely, or stretched out – whichever is most comfortable. Hold your rose quartz stone in your dominant hand and rest your hands in your lap. Close your eyes and feel the soothing vibrations of the stone as you take in deep breaths, and say your positive mantra each time you exhale. Do this for five minutes as a wonderful way to prepare yourself for the day ahead.

Say No to Waste 101 Easy Ways to Create Less Waste
Harriet Dyer
ISBN: 978 1 78685 961 7 £6.99 148x105mm 128pp Paperback July 2019 Rights and Sales Territories: World
The world is overflowing with waste and it’s time to take action. This practical book suggests ways to reduce waste, including how to cut unnecessary packaging, patch up or recycle old household items and drastically limit food waste. With 101 simple ways to create less waste, you’ll find it easy to take the first step.

DIVIDE AND CONQUER
It can be hard to cut down on plastic packaging when faced with aisles of the stuff in supermarkets. Supermarkets have grown to be our main destination for food shopping, due to the convenience of having everything under one roof. It’s not so convenient, however, if you’re picking through the aisles, searching for products that won’t add to your pile of plastic waste. Traditional grocers, butchers and weekly markets often offer the same fare – fruit, vegetables, meat, fish and cheese – but without all the packaging. Consider changing your shopping habits and giving up the supermarket for a month to see if you reduce your packaging waste.
Some cosmetics and skincare companies, notably those who market themselves as eco-friendly or ‘ethical’, use plastic packaging but offer customers incentives to refill their product instead of buying new. Some companies even have incentives available for those customers who return their packaging to be recycled by the company. Taking advantage of these offers can save you money as well as cut down single-use plastic waste. Plus, spending money on eco-friendly companies is a great way to ‘vote’ with your money and incentivise other bigname companies to offer the same eco opportunities.
Your kitchen should contain up to four different bins. This sounds like a lot but if you’re worried about space, don’t be – they don’t have to be big bins. You should have one for waste glass*, one for general recycling, including tins and cans, one for compostable items and finally one for general landfill waste. As you incorporate more waste-cutting methods into your daily life you’ll notice that your general waste bin will be much less full than your other bins – just what you want! Don’t forget that you can put items such as unwaxed and uncoated paper and tissue into your compost bin. These will break down in your composter over time.

The biggest supermarkets have significantly expanded their range of vegan and vegetarian products in 2018 in response to this trend. • The Little Book of Veganism (ISBN: 9781849537599) has sold over 27,000 copies. SAY NO TO MEAT
Rearing, keeping, slaughtering and transporting farm animals for human consumption uses up a lot of resources compared to farming plant-based foods – it takes around 11 times more fossil fuels to produce animal protein than plant protein. Animal agriculture also guzzles far more water; it takes anything between 1.5 and 6 times more water to produce a gram of meat protein than it does a gram of protein from pulses.

Vitamin B12
This recipe is the perfect mix of fresh flavour and substance, plus you start the day with a nice hit of protein.
B12 is one of the trickier vitamins to replace when relinquishing meat and fish. You only need 0.024 g of it daily and yet there are only a handful of foodstuffs that contain it. However, it’s essential to keep our metabolism strong and our brains working well. It might be tempting to turn to tablets, but they’re not very efficient – only 10 mg of every 500 mg of B12 is absorbed when taken in tablet form. Fortunately for Marmiteloving vegetarians, this is your moment of vindication – fortified yeast extracts are rich in B12. You can also include nutritional yeast in your cooking for when you want a cheesy flavour without all the cheese. 100 g fortified cereals

25 g Cheddar cheese

4 g Marmite

Serves 1 Ingredients:
3 medium eggs 25 g peas knob of butter or butter substitute 3 mint leaves, torn
Whisk the eggs together until the yolk is fully combined with the white. Boil water and pour over the peas so they partially cook (if peas are frozen, place in a pan and boil for 2 mins). Melt knob of butter in a small frying pan and pour eggs in. When the omelette is starting to set, scatter peas over and cook for a further 3 minutes. Fold omelette over and scatter mint leaves on top to serve.

Don’t be jelly of my jelly Gelatine is briefly touched upon on p.X, but here is a bit more information to help you make informed decisions about your gelatine intake. Be wary of any bouncy or wobbly food, as this is likely to contain gelatine. Most marshmallows and gummy sweets do – you’re most likely to find vegetarian versions in specialist shops or online – although some shiny sweets such as laces are more commonly gelatine-free. Set desserts such as jelly, panna cotta and some glazed, fruity cheesecakes often contain gelatine. If you’re worried about missing out, don’t be! Veggie alternatives to gelatine (usually pectin which is derived from fruit) are available in the baking aisle of most good supermarkets and although the method of preparation is different, the results are just as good.

Higher education is supposed to do more than improve a person academically: time spent at uni will give students an opportunity to experience a wide range of activities and to mature as an adult… well, that’s the theory anyway. Starting uni in new surroundings with new people can be daunting – for those leaving the comfort and security of their home for the first time it may take some getting used to. You’ll have to learn to do your own washing and cleaning, and there’s no longer a parent’s car with a full tank of petrol waiting for you when that emergency trip to A&E/the cinema/the chippy comes up. But it also means you get to enjoy a whole new level of independence and freedom from nagging parents (though we know you love them really!), and there’s a host of new and exciting experiences waiting for you around every corner. Whether you are sharing a house, living in a self-catering flat or in halls of residence, you’ll have to feed yourself, and though mistakes will undoubtedly be made there’s a limit to how many takeaways your stomach can endure.
Ingredients 1 onion 2 cloves of garlic 2 tbsp of olive oil 500 g of minced beef 1 tin of chopped tomatoes 1 carrot 2 rashers of bacon 1 large glass of red wine (optional) 1 tbsp of tomato purée 375 ml of beef stock Salt Pepper 200 g of spaghetti or other pasta

introduction
Peel and chop the onion and garlic and fry gently in the oil in a large saucepan for 5 minutes, being careful not to burn them. Add the minced beef and continue frying for a further 10 minutes. Cut the bacon into small pieces and grate the carrot, and add these along with the other remaining ingredients. While your sauce is reducing, which takes around 20 minutes, cook a pasta of your choice – it doesn’t have to be spaghetti – according to packet instructions. It’s up to you whether you want to pile the mixture on top of the pasta on a plate or combine the two, but either way a sprinkling of parmesan on top finishes it off perfectly.

CARAMEL POPCORN Not just for the cinema, popcorn is a great snack to share. Don’t be afraid of popping and seasoning it yourself – it’s a lot easier than you might think.
Method In a pan with a lid, heat the oil. When hot, add the popcorn to the oil, put the lid on, and swirl to coat all the kernels. Wait for the kernels to start popping, then swirl occasionally to avoid burning. When there is more than a second or two between pops, take off the heat and pour into your bowl. For the caramel, melt the butter in a pan. Add the sugar, and heat gently until the sugar is fully dissolved and the mixture bubbles. Add the bicarbonate and salt, and stir to incorporate.
Makes One large bowl of popcorn
Ingredients coconut oil 30-50g popping corn 100g vegan butter substitute such as pure soya spread 120g unrefined sugar ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda pinch of salt
after-dinner indulgences Quick berry n’ice cream • Fruit sorbets • Fudgy flapjacks • Chocolate-avocado torte • Matcha tea and lime pie • Zesty orange cake • Strawberry cheesecakes • Chocolate beetroot cake with avocado icing
You can either pour this mixture over the popcorn and leave it sticky, or put the popcorn onto a baking tray, pour the caramel over and bake for half an hour to really coat it.

DO YOUR RESEARCH
FEEDING THE BABY Breastfeeding or formula? Baby-led weaning or spooning mushy puree into that adorable little mouth? Choices, choices… However your grandchild’s parents are opting to feed their little one, it’s wise for you to be au fait with the basics.

Whoever assumed that keeping a baby well fed was a doddle was sadly mistaken! The truth is, there are fewer more divisive topics regarding early parenthood than the debate over breast versus bottle. As a grandparent, it’s probably safer to stay well out of any such discussions. Accept that, however your grandchild’s parents opt to feed their newborn, your role – as with most things grandparental – should be supportive, not judgemental.

That said, if you’re asked for your advice, it’s good to do your research on the basics, as well as knowing how to tackle potential feeding hurdles such as wind, reflux and tongue tie. And whilst experts recommend that babies aren’t introduced to solid foods until around six months – which may seem a long way off if your grandchild hasn’t even arrived yet – it’s wise to start planning for this momentous step well in advance too.

This little book is the perfect companion for your greatest adventure.
Key Selling Points: • A practical guide for new parents without being too information-heavy. Top Tips for New Parents_SAMPLE PAGES.indd 1-2
Upgrade your first aid kit with some essentials for your new baby.
Buy a digital thermometer. Babies are more susceptible to high temperatures than adults and are largely less capable of holding a thermometer in their mouths. A digital thermometer gives accurate readings from under the armpit. A normal temperature for a baby is around 36.4oC.
Babies over two months can take paracetamol and over three months can take ibuprofen. Buy a liquid pain reliever specifically for young children as your baby will not be able to swallow tablets.
Inquisitive little fingers can sometimes run into trouble. Include a pair of pointed tweezers to help tease out splinters in your first aid kit.
DISASTER DODGER So your little one’s nappy has gone nuclear and poo has made its way up their back. Fear not! Those little shoulder flaps at the top of the garment are not just for decoration, they’re designed to allow the head opening to become wide enough for you to slip the onesie down your baby’s body, so you can avoid spreading the mess. Simple, yet a lifesaver, especially when changing a newborn up to ten times a day.

CRADLE CAP Babies are prone to dry skin, particularly ‘cradle cap’. This layer of crusty skin on the top of their head can stick around for a long time. Rather than heading to the nearest chemist, try using a little coconut oil on the affected area. Not only is it harmless if ingested, but it’s gentle on your baby’s skin. Coconut oil can also be used to soothe insect bites, eczema and nappy rash.

Draw a simple 10 cm/14 in.-diameter segmented shell on to one of the pieces of 30 cm x 21 cm (12 in. x 18 in.) card (you may want to adjust the size of the shell a little to suit the size of your T-shirt). Leave at least 4 mm/0.25 in. between the sections of the shell; if these areas are too narrow, the shell will be difficult to cut out.
3 Trim small strips of double-sided sticky tape to fit around the edges of one stencil. You will need to stick the tape as closely to the edges as possible, if there are any gaps the fabric paint may run underneath the stencil. Peel off the surface of the double-sided tape.
Sometimes it’s just that little bit too chilly on the beach to wear your favourite shell bra, but don’t worry, you can still wear your sea shells on your T-shirt!
4
Materials:
Equipment:
• Two pieces of card, approx.
• • • • • • •
30 cm high x 21 cm wide (12 in. x 8 in.)
• Roll of double-sided sticky tape • White cotton T-shirt or vest-top (man-made fibres may not absorb fabric paint so well)
• Thick card, trimmed to fit snugly inside the T-shirt
• 25 ml/1 oz pot of pink fabric paint • 25 ml/1 oz pot of purple fabric paint
Iron the T-shirt to remove any creases and then slip the piece of thick cardboard inside, ensuring the card is beneath the area of fabric which you are going to paint. Not only will this create a smooth surface for sponging, it will also prevent the colour from seeping through to the back of the T-shirt.
Pencil Ruler Craft knife Cutting mat Small sponge Palette for paint
2
Two pieces of plain cotton fabric, large enough to cover the T-shirt (you could use two tea towels)
Carefully cut out the middle sections of the shell using a craft knife. Always protect your work surface with a cutting mat and work slowly for safety and accuracy. To make a second stencil, use the first as a guide to draw an identical shell shape on to another piece of 30 cm x 21 cm (12 in. x 8 in.) card. Cut out the sections of the second stencil in the same way.
• Iron and ironing board
Mermaid Tip: Always check the washing instructions for your chosen brand of fabric paint. If in doubt, hand wash painted fabric in cool water to preserve the colour. OCEAN FASHION

The Joy of Missing Out How to Embrace Solitude and Shun FOMO for Good
Clara Delaney
ISBN: 978 1 78685 793 4 £6.99 136x101mm 160pp Hardback September 2019 Rights and Sales Territories: World
It’s time to start missing out on peer pressure and making time for the things that bring you true happiness. This friendly little book is full of restorative bite-sized tips to help you celebrate the joys of quality time alone, and discover the importance of nurturing your own well-being. Forget FOMO, here’s to JOMO.
Key Selling Points: • An ideal gift for someone who needs to be encouraged to take some ‘me time’. • Another uplifting title, 365 Days of Happiness (ISBN: 9781849532044), has sold over 27,000 copies.
FORGET TO CHECK YOUR NEWSFEED Whatever your favourite social media, chances are you’re spending way too much time checking it out – an average of four hours a day, according to recent research. Yes, it’s a great way of staying in touch with your friends, but checking Facebook for likes every five minutes or poring over pics of your pal’s perfect home on Instagram can leave you feeling like a bit of a failure… and do you really want to spend 25 per cent of your day online? Switch off your device and organize a face-to-face meet up with someone who will boost your spirits instead.
Most of us dream of the things we would do if we had more time – well four hours a day sounds like a lot of time to me! You could use that time to work towards your goal, even if it’s in small bursts. If you’ve always wanted to travel, why not download a language app and practise that every time you feel the urge to reach for your phone. Or, if your dream is to get fitter, make a rule that you have to do ten squats before you check your newsfeed.
S O L I T U D E HAS ITS OWN VERY STRANGE BEAUTY TO IT.
Take yourself on a date Spending time alone can be seen in a negative light and we can feel pressured to spend every spare moment socializing with others, but studies have shown that regularly spending time alone makes you less stressed, more compassionate, more creative and mentally stronger too. So have a date with yourself once in a while: you could go out for a quiet coffee and take along your favourite book; go for a walk along the beach (and spend as long as you like photographing the waves) or visit a local gallery or museum.

KINTSUGI Kintsugi, meaning ‘golden joinery’, refers to the art of repairing broken pottery with gold-dusted lacquer – the idea being that the object becomes more beautiful for having broken and been put back together. The technique can be subtle or striking, depending entirely on how the piece of pottery has broken. Sometimes just a small chip on the side of a bowl or plate will be filled in, which is only noticeable if you look closely. Sometimes, the whole vessel can be shot through with veins of gold, which show the dramatic starbursts of fault lines, and zigzags of fragmented edges. No two repairs will be the same. Legend tells that kintsugi began in the fifteenthth century, when the shogun of Japan, Ashikaga Yoshimasa, sent a broken tea bowl back to China to be repaired. When it returned, it had been put back together with staples, as was the custom at the time for ceramics. The unsightly nature of the staples displeased him, so a new way was sought to repair pottery. The shogun’s cup was then mended again by filling its cracks with lacquered resin and powdered gold, and so kintsugi was born. In kintsugi, the act of repair is really an act of rebirth. Instead of trying to return a cup to its former state, it is transformed into a treasure. The lustre of the gold draws attention to its fracture lines and flaws, so they are not hidden but celebrated. They give the cup history and memory; they show that the object is loved and respected; and they make it unique and irreplaceable. It becomes a symbol of transience, strength and beauty. A cup or bowl repaired with kintsugi is also a living demonstration of wabi-sabi (p.X) – the idea that imperfection is beautiful, and that change is something to be accepted and embraced.

Bonsai is the art of growing and cultivating miniature trees. Most of us will be familiar with these distinctive plants, which seem at once both natural and refined – tiny branches presenting immaculate pads of leaves, trunks that appear gnarled with age, and their twisted silhouettes giving the illusion that they have been growing in the wild for hundreds of years. With bon meaning ‘basin’ or ‘tray’, and sai meaning ‘to plant’, the word bonsai translates roughly as ‘tree planted in a shallow container’. But there is much more to these compact trees than meets the eye. A bonsai is no mere pot plant – it is a living art form. Although it is now widely associated with Japan, the practice of growing and displaying trees in miniature originated in China in around 700 AD. Called Penjing or penzai, this practice involved creating entire landscapes on a small scale, and were often used by Taoists as meditative aids. These landscapes would incorporate pieces of wood that had naturally grown into contorted or striking shapes. Then, as time went on, techniques were developed across China for shaping the trees and cultivating these unusual silhouettes deliberately. Buddhist monks then brought the horticultural tradition to Japan, and over the next 1,200 years, the Japanese developed their own techniques for growing and developing miniature trees. Eventually it became known as bonsai – the Japanese pronunciation of penzai. During this time, the practise became less connected to spirituality and grew to be more of an art form, focusing on design and craft.

We all do stupid things in our lives, but the events in this book are next-level ridiculous! MOON HOWLER AT THE DATE: 2006 We’ve all seen the grainy video of Neil Armstrong making his ‘small step’ onto the surface of the moon in 1969. Yet, we are very lucky to have seen that film at all. The famous moonwalk footage was shot using a format that provided high-quality images, however, it wasn’t possible to transmit them directly to televisions. By the time the stills were converted for broadcast via a radio telescope in Australia, the final quality of the footage was much degraded. In 2006, NASA decided to use modern technology to enhance the original stills sent from the moon, so that the historic moment could be seen in the best possible quality. But when they started looking for the rolls of film that they assumed were in their archives, they couldn’t find them anywhere. Three years later, NASA admitted that the films had probably been reused to save money – they had taped over one of the greatest moments in human advancement for the sake of a few dollars. NASA was forced to dig out old copies of the original TV broadcast and enlisted experts to enhance them as best they could, though the final result is not quite as clear as it might have been.

DID YOU KNOW? In 1934, Benito Mussolini decided that the Leaning Tower of Pisa was offensive to his country’s new fascist architectural vision of straight lines and right angles. The dictator ordered engineers to pump cement under the building to reverse its tilt, but hundreds of tonnes of concrete only succeeded in making the tower even more lopsided.

DID YOU KNOW?
DATE: 26 FEBRUARY 2017
DATE: 1173 In the late twelfth century, the wealthy trading city of Pisa broke ground for the construction of a 60-metre-high tower to house the great bells of the Piazza dei Miracoli cathedral. It was to be one of the finest structures in Europe, but instead became the Continent’s most famous folly, in both senses of the word. The Pisan soil was too soft for the tower’s shallow foundations, meaning that the structure was already tilting to the north by the time the second storey was built. By then it was probably too late to rectify, and so they carried on with the construction. Two hundred years later, the bell tower was complete. Thanks to a recent restoration project to help tilt the tower back the other way, it is claimed that the tower should remain standing for at least another 300 years. The true wonder of this building is that it’s still standing.

> The scene: the 2017 Oscars. > The players: Hollywood legends Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway. > The role: announcing the Best Picture winner, the most important prize-giving of the night. BEATTY: … and the Academy Award, for Best Picture… [Beatty hands the envelope to Dunaway for extra dramatic tension – or perhaps because he appears a little confused by what is written on the card] DUNAWAY: La La Land! And we are imagining this scene because…? It was not the right answer. Beatty had been given an envelope declaring the winner of the Best Actress award, La La Land’s Emma Stone, not Best Picture. He looked confused because he was; he wondered why Stone’s name was on the card. The error was revealed after Oscars staff hurried onstage, and La La Land producer Fred Berger finished his speech with the words, ‘We lost, by the way,’ before the real winner – Moonlight – was declared.

In January 2000, at the height of the dotcom boom, Internet giant AOL absorbed media company Time Warner in a deal worth $360 billion. Three years later, the company posted a record $99 billion loss. The two split in 2009, when AOL was worth just $2.5 billion, a fraction of its former value. In 2009, ITV sold Friends Reunited for £25 million, after paying £175 million for the website four years earlier. Satellite phone company Iridium entered bankruptcy in 1999, nine months after it was founded, but not before spending more than $5 billion on launching 88 satellites into space. The company resolved to leave the satellites to burn up in Earth’s atmosphere, but just at the last minute they were saved by investors with US government help, and the company’s billion dollar assets were bought for a mere $35 million.

Is it just me, or does everyone else have their shit together? Believe me, you’re not alone! If you’re having sleepless nights about your latest social media post, think that you’re a loser in love, or have a job that you hate, then this book is your life jacket and comfort blanket rolled into one sweet package.
Key Selling Points: • A witty illustrated handbook of tips and advice for dealing with the traumas and tribulations that life throws at you when you’re only in your twenties! • An ideal book for all millennials and Gen Z. • The Little Book of Adulting (ISBN: 9781786855237) has sold over 7,000 copies in its first six months of publication. Why dead-end jobs are good for you
Working in a dead-end job can sometimes feel like a living nightmare of interminable drudgery and gloom, but it’s comforting to remember that 99.9 per cent of the population experience this life-sap at some stage in their lives. While you feel your drive and enthusiasm slowly drain away like that lukewarm soy latte you forgot to drink, keep in mind that even your most tedious jobs have value. Whether the job you’re doing is the bottom rung towards a career goal or maybe you’re simply shovelling metaphorical shit, take note of the skills you are racking up for when you one day move on to far, far better things. It might also help to remember that no job is perfect – not even the one you’ve been dreaming of since you were five and told everyone about at Show and Tell. So, make sure you take this opportunity to master the arts of tolerance and admin. Also, bear in mind that your job isn’t your whole
life! Sure, it might take up a large chunk of your waking hours, but think about all those hours that you’re free. As you’re using your day-job to pay the bills and save towards that thousand-dollar mono-fin so you can be a real-life mermaid, use your free time to do something more relevant to your future career or personal fulfilment. Working on a voluntary basis at the weekends, or for a charity you care about in the evenings is a great way to not only get more out of your time but also to bolster your CV for the next role you apply for. If nothing else, working in a deadend job is going to teach you some powerful lessons – namely what things you definitely do not enjoy doing (and, if you’re lucky, some things that you do). And when you do eventually fulfil that dream of handing in your notice, you can do so knowing that any job you go to next will feel like absolute paradise. And hey, you make a great Easter bunny! Just try not to scowl...
